ESL Literacy Network
The ESL Literacy Network, hosted by Bow Valley College, is an online community of practice that provides resources and information to support the professional development of ESL literacy practitioners. It offers a wealth of professional learning on the ESL Literacy Network’s blog, as well as professional development webinars for ESL Literacy practitioners. All of their recorded webinars are available to registered CEIIA (Bow Valley College’s Centre for Immigrant and Intercultural Advancement) members. There is also resource finder – an online ESL Literacy resource room – filled with a collection of Bow Valley College resources and tools to enhance your ESL Literacy program and classroom instruction. Some of these resources appear in the sections the follow. (Links to instructor support resources are located on the “Resources to Support Instructors Teaching Literacy” page.)

ESL Literacy Readers - Introduction
ESL Literacy Readers is a selection of theme-based readers along with an instructors’ guide that will support ESL literacy instructors to create comprehensive, theme-based lessons for adult ESL literacy learners. With funding from Citizenship and Immigration Canada, the ESL Literacy Readers were written by ESL literacy instructors at Bow Valley College who have extensive experience working with adult ESL literacy learners and who have a vested interest in stories that will work in the ESL literacy classroom. Many of the stories were piloted in Bow Valley College ESL literacy classrooms to ensure their suitability for learners at the CLB Phase for which the stories were written. They have been written specifically with adult ESL literacy learners in mind and are appropriate for learners at Canadian Language Benchmark ESL Literacy Phases I-III.
ESL Literacy Readers - Introduction
ESL Literacy Readers – Guide
This guide accompanies 40 ESL theme-based literacy stories. Included are extension ideas to enable the creation of comprehensive, theme-based lessons for adult ESL literacy learners. These stories are not to be read in isolation; rather, each story will serve as the foundation of a lesson that incorporates not only extensions in the classroom but also in the community.

Knowing Your Literacy Students Project - Curriculum Guidelines and a Cultural Manual
Produced by the Calgary Immigrant Women’s Association (CIWA), this is a resource manual for ESL and literacy instructors working with low-literate learners. It is designed to help immigrant women who are falling behind in the process of learning English and help them transition up into the regular LINC stream. To accomplish this, CIWA created an alternative curriculum targeting the barriers LINC teachers and their research identified. The project manual consists of two main sections: a discussion on how culture may influence the learning process for literacy learners, and the curriculum guidelines. The manual also has appendices which include the following:
Cultural profiles of countries possessing a higher level of low literate learners; these contain overviews of the social, political and educational environments of their project participants’ countries
Materials and resources list that were used for the project’s pilot class Bibliography

Language Learning for Health: Resources for ESL / LINC Practitioners
Ottawa Public Health (OPH), in collaboration with the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board, has produced a series of lessons to promote health among newcomers in ESL and LINC programs.
A “healthy immigrant effect” has been observed in Canada - immigrants arrive in relatively good health but over time, their health declines as they adopt unhealthy habits, such as increased consumption of junk food and lack of exercise. Newcomers face multiple barriers that impact their health, such as language, cultural differences, social isolation, poverty, unstable housing and unemployment, and often have difficulty navigating the health and social system and accessing needed services and programs.
These lessons are based on the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB). Each topic includes a lesson plan at each of the following levels: ESL Literacy-CLB 1, CLB 2-3, and CLB 4-5. The ESL Literacy-CLB 1 lessons appear below. Please see “CLB-Referenced and Other Online Resources for Teaching Health” for the CLB 2-3 and CLB 4-5 lessons.)

Hands On! A Collection of ESL Literacy Activities
This collection of activities, developed by Kathy Burnett of the Halifax Immigrant Learning Centre, is for instructors working with adult ESL learners who have had little or no opportunity to develop reading and writing skills. The chapters focus on topics usually explored in any adult ESL class, although references are made to areas and names within Nova Scotia. Although the primary focus is to provide a thematic-based approach to learning reading and writing, the activities will also serve as catalysts for speaking and listening activities. Hands On! is not a curriculum, but one of many resources that can be used to teach learners how to read and write.

Literacy Center Education Network
Designed for young children but perfect for literacy learners, this US site features an interactive series of engaging animations and activities. These cover how to recognize and write the letters of the English alphabet and Arabic numerals. They also assist with how to draw common shapes and recognize colours, as well as write the names of the colours, letters, numbers and shapes. In addition, there are activities to help develop keyboard recognition; after entering this section, left-click once on each activity page and then use the keyboard keys to do the activities. The English Language Games section is online and interactive, while the English Language Printouts may be printed and then used as writing and drawing templates.
