WELCOME to Clean Break'sCourse Prospectus for 2011/12.Inside you will find all theinformation you need to help youdecide which course is right for

you and how to apply.

Clean Break was set up in 1979 by two womenprisoners at HMP Askham Grange. From theseroots within the criminal justice system, we havegrown to become a lively and well-establishedtheatre company with a comprehensive educationprogramme. Our work is founded on the principlesof respect for one another, equality ofopportunity, recognising and embracing ofdiversity and access to theatre and the arts.Our courses are designed and delivered especiallyfor women with an offending background andwomen at risk of offending because of their mentalhealth, and/or drug or alcohol use.

Whether or not you want to pursue a career intheatre or the arts, Clean Break is rich withopportunities to participate in theatre and to see ahigh quality professional company at work. Wehave courses for those who have no experience inthe arts, those who want to develop their skillsfurther or those who just want to try out somethingnew in a safe, friendly women-only environment.

All the activities describedin this prospectus, togetherwith the support of ourexperienced women-onlyteam and a fabulousbuilding, make studying atClean Break a very special

opportunity. Plus all our courses are free – so noone should miss out because they can’t afford it.

WHO WE WORK WITHClean Break is for women who:

• Have experience of the criminal justice system.You may be in contact with the police, have beencautioned or sentenced for an offence, are onremand, on a community order, on bail, on license,in prison or known to a Youth Offending Team.

• Are at risk of offending due to drug/alcoholor mental health needs.You may have recently completed a drug/alcoholrehabilitation programme and feel that you arevulnerable to committing an offence or are incontact with mental health services as a result ofa referral by the police.

• Are over the age of 18 years(with the exception of our work with girls andyoung women 14-17 years old in community andcustodial settings).

• Are interested in exploring your creativity

to Jacqueline, who leads the student supportservice, to arrange an interview and/or

• Book yourself onto one of our Information Days onFriday 2nd December 2011 or Friday 22nd June2012, 12 – 3pm.

Step Three:• Attend an interview with a member of the Student

Support Team. Here you will have the chance todiscuss your educational and personal needs.

• If the interview is successful you will be enrolledthat day and be given a date to return for yoursecond stage assessment. You will also beinformed of your course start date.

FIND OUT MOREAlthough you can enrol throughout the year(excluding August) we have an enrolment week at thestart of each term. This is when most of our coursesstart up and it is a good time to get involved.

Course Information

PERFORMANCE COURSES

Introduction to DramaMonday afternoons / Wednesday afternoons, 2 – 4pm, 8 weeksThis course is ideal for students who wish to develop their confidence andcreativity whilst working with others. It will include drama games, vocal andphysical warm-ups and basic improvisation. No experience is necessary, just aninterest in drama and in learning to work as a team.

Performance Level 1Tuesdays, 11am - 4pm, 12 weeksThis course is an opportunity to develop your performance skills in a safe andsupportive environment. Based on improvisation and devised theatre, theemphasis of the course is on enjoyment, building confidence and teamwork.Drama skills will be developed and students will create a piece of theatre. Therewill be a sharing of students’ work at the end of the course for an invitedaudience. This course is for students who have completed Introduction to Dramaor have some experience of drama.

NOCN Level 1 Award for Progression will be awarded on successful completionof the course.

Performance Level 2Mondays and Tuesdays, 11am - 4pm, 11 weeksThis course is for students with the ability and commitment to progress further intheir performance work. The focus of the course is on acting skills, text andperformance as well as the career opportunities in the performing arts industry.Students will have the opportunity to practise some of the skills fundamental to theart of acting including vocal and movement skills and characterisation. Text will beused in class, in rehearsal and in performance. Students will also explore a rangeof career opportunities available in the performing arts sector, and look at thetraining required and the most likely career pathways.

This course is for students who have completed Introduction to Drama andPerformance Level 1 or have some experience of drama and improvisation.

BTEC Level 2 Certificate in Performing Arts will be awarded on successful completionof the course. There is an expectation of written work for successful completion ofLevels 1 and 2.

Audition skillsThursday afternoons, 2 – 4pm, 9 weeksThis course will offer you the chance to choose and work on a contemporaryand/or classical speech to be performed in front of a panel and get feedback.There will also be the opportunity to learn about the audition process of applyingto drama school and/or for theatre work. Previous experience of working on textis needed.

Group Sing and RecordWednesday afternoons, 2 – 4pm, 8 weeksThis course offers a chance to develop your vocal singing style within a group.The first part of the course will include vocal warm ups and techniques, exploredthrough singing songs in different styles, including Soul, Jazz and Improvisedmusic. The second part of the course will include an introduction to recordingwithin a studio and the role of sound engineer. A demo will be made of thegroup singing at the end of the course.

Performance PoetryWednesday afternoons, 2 - 4pm, 8 weeksThis is a course to bring poetry off the page and onto the stage. If you want tocombine your creative writing skills with your performance then this is the rightcourse for you. There will be an optional presentation of students’ work at theend of the course.

DanceWednesday mornings, 11am – 1pm, 8 weeksThis lively course is run in partnership with The Place. You will explore differentstyles of movement and dance such as contemporary, jazz and street dance. Youwill learn dance performance skills as well as improved balance and flexibility,and increased fitness. Suitable for all levels and no previous experiencenecessary. There will be an optional sharing of work at the end of the course.

Make-upThursdays, 11am - 1pm, 8 weeksRun in partnership with The London College of Fashion, this course introduces therole of a make-up artist within theatre. Through practical and informativesessions you will explore skills and methods of applying make-up using a widerange of brushes and products. You will gain a greater understanding of colourand tones using techniques such as blending to highlight the physicalappearance and emotions of characters. The use of costume and how it relates tomake-up design will also be explored on this course.

Introduction to Set and Costume DesignThursdays, 11am – 1pm, 10 weeksRun in partnership with Central St Martins and Wimbledon School of Art, thiscourse is aimed at beginners who would like to understand the role of a theatredesigner and of the careers available in theatre design. Students will beintroduced to the creative process of costume and set design using a range oftechniques. The class will explore ideas around colour, fabric, tone and moodand will create a storyboard and a model box. No experience necessary. This isa practical course.

WRITING COURSES

Workshop skillsMonday afternoons, 2 – 4pm, 8 weeksThis course will introduce you to the techniques of running drama workshops.You will explore games and exercises and work on building your skills andconfidence in leading a group. We will look at adapting games for differentsized groups and in different settings. At the end of the course, students willdevise and lead a short workshop with the group. No experience necessary.

Backstage: An IntroductionMondays 11am – 4pm, 8 weeksRun in partnership with Rose Bruford College, this course offers an introduction tothe roles of stage technicians – lighting, sound and stage management. The coursewill include practical experience and there will be an opportunity to apply theskills you have learnt to a student production. No previous experience isnecessary. Even if you are mainly interested in acting or writing, this courseprovides a useful understanding of what goes on behind the scenes.

Improve your EnglishWednesday mornings, 11am – 1pm, On-going (students can enrol for 1 – 3 terms)This course is for students wanting to improve their reading and writing skills. It is asupportive and friendly course in which you can improve your grammar, spellingand writing style through a variety of creative projects. One-to-one help is available.

Writing for Theatre:IntroductionMonday and Tuesdays, 11am - 4pm, 3 daysThis intensive three day course will introduce you to elements of theatre writing withthe opportunity to meet professional writers to discuss and explore their styles andsources of inspiration. You will learn how to create characters, dramatic action andwrite dialogue through improvisation and practical exercises aimed to spark yourimagination and generate ideas. You will gain the confidence and skills to start writing.

Writers GroupWednesday afternoons, 2 - 4pm (11 - 4pm on last day), 6 weeksIn the Writers Group you will build on the skills introduced in Writing forTheatre Introduction and further explore important elements of dramaticwriting - action, story and structure through working and reworking your ownscene or short play. As part of this process you will also receive a one hour, one-to-one session with the tutor working on your script, including offering guidanceon further development. The group will culminate in a presentation of your workto a wider audience at Clean Break where your scene/short play will beperformed by professional actors. Participants will be expected to work on theirscripts during and in-between sessions.

Self DevelopmentWednesday and Thursdays, 11am - 4pm, 3 weeksplus a one-hour coaching sessionThis course prepares students for working in groups and provides new tools fordealing with difficult feelings and the space to look at your own strengths andweaknesses. The course uses creative exercises including writing, drama, poetry andpainting. A willingness to look at your life and the path you want to take is required.

Women and AngerTuesdays, 10.30am - 1pm and Thursdays, 10:30am -1pm,(10:30am – 4:30pm on first day), 7 weeksThis course is for women who find it difficult to express their anger in a waywhich is not harmful to themselves or to others. It recognises that women expressanger in a variety of ways, for example through self-harming behavioursincluding depression, eating disorders or substance misuse. The course providesa non-judgmental space for women to understand their anger, manage theiremotions better and to learn and practise new coping strategies.

There is a pre course assessment for women interested in taking part in thiscourse. Participants are also expected to do work in-between sessions.

Improving Your Mental HealthMondays, 11am – 1pm, 10 weeksThis course is for women who identify as having mental health difficulties and/oremotional distress and would like to work on improving their wellbeing. Thecourse will provide the opportunity to meet other women who struggle withsimilar issues, share experiences and coping strategies, and support each other.The focus will be on improving mental health and will include input on self-care,creativity, diet and exercise, alternatives to self-harm, body-image and self-esteem, crisis management, and relaxation and meditation. You will need tocomplete a short assessment with the student support worker before being offereda place on this course.

Being a MotherMonday and Tuesday, 11am – 4pm, 2 daysThis introductory course is run in partnership with the Concord Trust. Over thetwo days you will explore both some of the challenges of motherhood and alsoshare/learn some coping strategies. The course will use creative exercisesincluding writing, role play and drama in a safe and non-judgemental space.This course is for women who want to improve their relationship with theirchildren.

Back on Track Life Skills Courses

Wednesday evenings 6 – 8pm14th September – 19th October 20113rd November – 7th December 20116 weeksIn 2011 Clean Break is working with Camden Police to provide services towomen arrested in Camden, including women who have been issued aconditional caution. If this applies to you, you will be offered a one-to-onemeeting with our outreach worker, who will talk with you about your lifecircumstances. She will listen non-judgmentally and where possible, signpost youto other sources of help and support.

If you are interested in staying in touch with Clean Break after this, you may beinvited to attend our free life skills course at Clean Break. This six week courseruns one evening a week for six weeks. In a safe and supportive space, thecourse will look at communication skills, managing conflict, problem solving andplanning for the future you want.

The life skills course is a good introduction for women new to Clean Break andreferred through the Back on Track Project. You can find out if Clean Break is theright place for you before committing to a longer course.

Miss Spent Young Women’s Course

For young women 18-24 year olds, Thursdays 11am - 4pm, 10 WeeksWe know growing up and being young in the current climate isn’t easy!This course is a matured version of our hugely successful Miss Spent programmewhich we ran for five years in community and custodial settings. Over the tenweeks you will have the opportunity to try out a range of art forms includingdrama, dance, visual arts, film and singing. We will explore respect for self andothers, rights and equality and how to improve relationships. We will also focuson steps towards further training and employment opportunities. What you getout of it will also be about what you bring and where you want to go but we aimto provide a safe and stimulating environment whilst you are deciding......All ourstaff are experienced and empathic in their approach to working with youngwomen. It will also provide a gateway onto our adult programme for those whowant to try the full range of Clean Break opportunities.

NOCN Level 1 Award for Progression will be awarded on successful completionof the course.

Moving into Higher EducationAny students who want to apply to drama school, university or other colleges canattend this session to get advice about selecting the right course, writing personalstatements and preparing for interview. There will be further drop-in sessionsduring the term.

Monday 26th September 2011 11am – 4pm

Stage WorksStage Works is a work experience scheme for students who are attending (or haverecently attended) courses at Clean Break to gain hands-on experience in thecreative arts. Examples of work experience opportunities include: artsadministration; assisting workshop leaders; theatre ushers; assisting technicaltheatre/stage management; observing/shadowing a make-up artist; and otherareas in the creative industries. The timescale can vary from one day to an intensiveweek over a period of time to be agreed with the student and host organisation.

All students on work experience placements are provided with travel, lunchmoney and childcare costs and other support given by Clean Break. If you areinterested in doing a Stage Works placement, the first step is to come to a StageWorks Information Session. This will be a chance for you to find out more aboutStage Works and the application process, and to talk with other students andClean Break staff about work placements. There is one Stage Works InformationSession each term:

Moving On DaysAlongside volunteering through Stage Works, (see above) Clean Break offersstudents wanting to move on the opportunity to attend a Moving On Day. This isfor those students who feel ready to move into employment or want to explorestarting your own business. During the days, you will have the chance to look athow to complete an application form, practise interviews and auditions, exploresome of the barriers to employment (including disclosures advice), and supporteach other to apply for work.

STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICESClean Break Student Support Services offers confidential advice, guidanceand support to all students attending the Education and TrainingProgramme. We know from past students that it is important for them tomake full use of the student support service to help them to identify life andcareer goals, and to take steps towards them. We therefore recommendthat you make full use of the service from an early stage.

• We provide a confidential advisory service by appointment.• We provide professional help for students to plan their academic

programme and personal development in relation to career goals.• We provide a screening assessment that will identify any learning

support (eg dyslexia) needs carried out by the Student Support Worker.• We provide a series of career guidance meetings to review your

career/educational goals through your time at Clean Break.• We provide students with an exit interview that will help you to look at

educational/training progression routes eg work placements, voluntarywork and Further/Higher Education.

• We offer financial and practical help towards affordable childcare.• We work in partnership with food charities to provide you with a meal

at lunch, where possible.• We reimburse travel costs from within the London area.• We offer a welfare referral service eg housing, financial and counselling.

General Information

About our Artist-TutorsWe employ a range of excellent artist-tutors who have a great deal of professionalexperience working in the theatre, teaching and leading workshops and facilitatingcourses. In addition, we work in partnership with organisations who provide theirown staff to work with us; these include London College of Fashion, The Place,Central St Martins, Rose Bruford College and City and Islington College. All ourstaff are friendly, understanding and non-judgemental and aim to provide you withthe best learning opportunity possible in small class sizes.

What to wearDuring your day at Clean Break you will be expected to take part in a range ofphysical drama-based games and activities. Please wear loose and comfortableclothes and soft shoes eg tracksuit bottoms and trainers. Skirts and high heels arenot to be worn in the studios (if you need to, you can bring a set of loose clothesto change into). Please do not bring or wear anything that is valuable to you.

Qualifications and certificatesThe National Open College Network (NOCN) accredits our Performance Level 1and Miss Spent Young Women’s Course. Successful completion of both thesecourses will result in an NOCN Award for Progression Qualification at Level 1.Our BTEC Certificate in Performing Arts is a level 2 course accredited by EdExcel. All other courses are awarded with a certificate from Clean Break.

Students with Learning Difficulties and/or DisabilitiesClean Break is committed to meeting the needs of disabled and dyslexic students.We will do our best to includeall students, both disabled and non-disabled, and will make reasonable adjustments to courses to ensure thatdisabled students can participate as fully as possible. We encourage you to disclose your support needs atenrolment so we can plan any specialist support staff (eg signers or scribes), and aids or equipment which may berequired to undertake a course successfully. We can also provide additional learning support, and students withlearning difficulties and/or disabilities will be given first priority as necessary. We provide a confidential dyslexiascreening and assessment service and we will provide one-to-one sessions to support students with dyslexia.

Students with Mental Health NeedsWe offer students with mental health needs support to help you manage any difficulties that may get in the way ofyour learning. There is a ten week course which runs September – December 2011 (see course timetable), followedby a peer support group for students with mental health needs, which runs during the term for the rest of the academicyear. The peer support group provides somewhere that students can talk about their mental health, how they arefinding studying at Clean Break, and any concerns they want to share. You will also benefit from being able tobuild relationships with your peers, give and receive emotional support, and share ideas about self-help strategiesand good sources of support. If you prefer to discuss things individually, then you are always welcome to book anappointment with Student Support Services, which has experience of supporting students with mental health needs.

Information Technology and Computer SupportClean Break has on-site computers to assist you in your studies, which areavailable for use Monday – Thursday, 9.30am – 5pm. All students will haveaccess to the Internet.

Clean Break can also help you to find free or low-cost IT training to support yourlearning here. If you would like more information on what’s available, pleasespeak to the Theatre Education Manager.

Janet Suzman LibraryThe on-site library supports the academic work of Clean Break Education andTraining Programme. We have a modest resource in the form of the Janet SuzmanLibrary that has a selection of theatre-related books, play texts, and self help guides.

Student ForumThis Forum gives students an opportunity to take part actively in shaping a bettereducation service. It also provides a space to voice what you see as positive andsuccessful. Course representatives and staff meet once a term to debate/discussnew ideas and contribute to existing student services.

Students’ views and opinions are listened to carefully by staff and acted uponwhenever possible. This forum is an important platform for students to voice theiropinion - so attend and be a part of making Clean Break work for you.

The BuildingClean Break moved into its current premises in Kentish Town in 1998. Thebuilding has been especially converted for use by Clean Break and offers tworehearsal/workshop spaces, a small studio theatre, café/kitchen area, offices andan outside courtyard. The building is wheelchair accessible and provides apositive learning environment for staff and students alike.

No Smoking PolicyClean Break operates a no smoking policy to promote the health and safety of itsstudents, staff and visitors, and to raise environmental standards. Smoking is notpermitted in any part of the building except in allocated areas within the outsidecourtyard of Clean Break’s property.

Car ParkingThere are no car parking facilities on Clean Break premises. Students who havecars are required to park on the neighbouring roads and use parking meters.Vehicles parked without a permit on access roads, or where they could cause anobstruction may be wheel-clamped.
