EINLEITUNG

Guide warnings

You will be working with high voltage equipment. I am not responsible for any attained injuries(or your stupidity).Use common sense when following this guide. If you are questioning your ability to completethis repair, it is best to have a professional do the job.Professionals: This is not a long term fix. It is meant for the home user to fix their receiver withminimal cost. For the sake of not having the issue come back, it is best to replace the failedboard in question. As such, I do not recommend using it as a standard fix in a business.

If your Pioneer VSX-918V series receiver has developed control problems and would like to try andfix the problem without a new board, this guide will show you how to use contact cleaner to try andrestore functionality.

Note: While this fix is likely to work, I do not guarantee the life of the repaired board or thatthis will even work at all. Some may last the life of the receiver while others will fail again andneed replacement. This fix may not work at all.

WERKZEUGE:Flathead Screwdriver (1)

To disassemble the receiver, switch to a Phillipsbit.

Magnetic Project Mat (1)Use this to sort your screws.

TEILE:DeoxIT (1)

RadioShack Anti-Corrosive Lubricant spraycan be used in place.

RadioShack Control Contact Cleaner (1)

Schritt 1 — Unplug the receiver

In order to ensure there is noresidual power, unplug thereceiver for 48-72 hours. Whilesome charge may remain, thereceiver will be safer to work on.

Before working on the unit, disconnect the unit from the wall. Todrain most power quickly, unplug thereceiver and hold the power buttonfor 30-60 seconds.

Schritt 2 — Remove the bottom faceplate screws

Black marker On my unit, this screw hole was empty. If your unit has a screw, remove it from theunit.

Remove the two screws holding the faceplate on the receiver. These screws are different andneed to be sorted separately.

Schritt 3 — Remove the side panel screws

Remove the 2 screws from the left side of the receiver. These screws are the same length.

Remove the 1 screw on the right side of the receiver. While it is likely the same, it should be sortedsepratley.

Schritt 4 — Remove the back screws

Exercise extreme caution with the receiver at this point! If you touch a component at thisstage you will not be protected from shock.

Remove the 3 screws from the back of the receiver. Once these are removed, you can remove thetop of the receiver.

Schritt 5 — Remove the retention pin on the faceplate

If the clip in the faceplate is missing,it has been serviced prior to youopening it.

If you break the pin or decide not toput it in, it is not essential. While thefaceplate will be loose, it will still besecure. While omitting it is fine, aneffort to preserve it should be made.

This pin is installed by the factory. To remove this pin, push it out fromthe back until it is loose. Once it isloose, it should come out from thefront.

Schritt 6 — Remove the faceplate screws

After the clip from the faceplate is removed, remove the 2 screws that hold it onto the chassis. These screws are both the same length.

Schritt 7 — Remove the knob from the receiver

If these knobs were never removed prior to this problem, first time removal can be tricky.

Remove the control knob from the receiver. To do this, pull the knob off firmly. Do not use toomuch pressure, as this can damage the potentiometer.

Schritt 8 — Disconnect the front panel flex cables

If your receiver has the iPod Direct feature, special attention to the front panel is required.

If your unit has the iPod Direct feature, disconnect the cable that plugs into the board. The board isscrewed into the front panel and will need to be removed in a later step.

Once the cable going to the board on the faceplate is disconnected, disconnect the flat flex thatinterfaces with the receiver.

Schritt 9 — Unclip the faceplate

Once the unit is reassembled, these zipties must be replaced. Failure to do this may result inprotection mode errors.

Cut the zipties that hold the front panel wires on the fan. This is required as it is the best way tofree up room on the front panel to access the control boards.

With the faceplate loose and all of the cables disconnected, unclip the faceplate one side at a time. The faceplate should lay on your workspace with enough room to work on accessing the controlboards.

Schritt 10 — Remove the iPod Direct board

Depending on if your receiver includes the iPod Direct option or not, a different procedureis required.

iPod Direct: On iPod Direct receivers, remove all 4 screws marked. Once this is done, set thescrews, support structure and PCB aside.

Non iPod Direct: On non iPod Direct receivers, remove the Green and Red screws. Your receiveris unlikely to have the additional screws because they are not required.

Schritt 11 — Remove the faulty control board

Remove the 3 screws that hold the volume control board in the receiver's front faceplate.

This screw is unique and only fits here. Make sure it is sorted separately.

Schritt 12 — Spray contact cleaner into the potentiometer

A little contact cleaner goes a long way and more then 1-2 sprays should be needed. If you needto use a fair amount of contact cleaner to get it working, the potentiometer may be damaged and anew board may be required.

With the control board loose from the front panel, spray contact cleaner into the potentiometer.Once this is done, clean up the excess and turn the switch several times.

To reassemble your device, follow these instructions in reverse order.

NOTE: During reassembly, the zipties on the fan must be replaced. Forgetting to do this may cause thewires to jam the fan and put the receiver in protection mode.

Schritt 13 — Wipe away any excess contact cleaner

This fix may not be permanent. Insome cases, the issue may comeback if the potentiometer isdamaged. In the event it fails again, the board will have to be replaced. Itis also not a good idea toreassemble or power on the receiverfor ~30 minutes-1 hour so anyleftover contact cleaner on the PCBcan dry.

If you do not have zipties available, tuck the wires in the fan so that theycannot easily move. While this is nota good idea for long term use, thismay allow you to "get by" until youcan purchase zipties.

Wipe off any excess contact cleanerthat got on the PCB. Once thevolume control board is dry, reinstallthe volume control board into thefront panel.
