We have had a very smooth and positive start to the term. We expect all students to continue to focus on their learning and strive for success. Some staff changes for term 3: We welcome Mr. Cody Needham to our staff team. Cody will be teaching in the Tech Studies area. We thank Mr. Colin McColl, who has been teaching in this area for the past six months. We also welcome Hahmany Agars, who will be teaching in the middle school. We welcome back Helen Heron who will return part time and Fiona Ward will continue so the Admin and Finance role will be shared. In addition to her Indonesian HPI role, Marlina Davis will be working 2 days per week in a Curriculum Support SSO role. We also welcome Bev Hannigan Story and Rowand Hannigan, who have taken over from Sue-Anne Marino as supervisors of the Boarding House. We thank Sue-Anne for providing over 6 years of support, encouragement and hard work, in keeping our Boarding House students safe, secure and supported. We also thank Sue-Anne for staying with us till we found a replacement. We wish Sue-Anne all the best as she moves back to Adelaide. Covid-19 update: Firstly I want to take this opportunity to thank all our parents for being very supportive in our efforts to follow all the COVID-19 restrictions and protocols throughout last term. As you would be aware we have made changes to the way we are working to keep everyone safe. You would also be aware that the state government has relaxed some restrictions so that we can now have excursions, assemblies and resume some sporting activities. However we all still have to abide by the safety protocols of hand washing, social distancing, and trace/tracking of individuals. In order to abide by these protocols I want to let you know that if parents want to volunteer and or visit classrooms you will have to register in the front office before visiting the classrooms or other areas of the school. To this end and for the time being, I am asking all parents to continue with the process of waiting at the school boundary when bringing or collecting students. We will review this later in the term. I have discussed this with Rowena Fox, our Education Director and we both agree to move forward with caution in order to keep everyone safe. If you need any more information please feel free to contact me at the school. Our attendance data is improving, however some year levels are slightly below the state average. our school. For some students, consistent and productive attendance presents a problem. I urge you to help us to help your son/daughter achieve their best by insisting that they are regular in attendance and application. We understand that living in a rural area presents us with some issues, especially when we make appointments, take family holidays or apply for harvest leave. As a staff we encourage students, especially those in the secondary part of our school, to attend and participate every day. In term 4 some senior students usually ask for leave to work at home on the property or Viterra. We will only support this if the student has completed all the required assignments to a C grade or above standard. We want all students to succeed and thus we require them to be honest with themselves, parents and teachers. In past years students have tried to do the minimal work at the last minute before applying for leave. Please help us to support your children by ensuring that before requesting leave you have spoken to us about any school work that is not completed. Pupil free day Monday 17th August - Week 5 Term 3: The Central Eyre Partnership Executive has been planning a whole partnership Student Free Day for Monday Aug 17th week 5. Our schools improvement priorities include a major focus on Writing. The Secondary staff will be travelling to Pt. Lincoln on the Pupil free day to work with Associate Professor Misty Adoniou a leading authority on Literacy Improvement. The Primary will travel to Lock Area School to work with Lee Carter, a DfE Curriculum Consultant. All staff will be involved in Professional Learning that will help us in our school’s improvement journey.

My aim as Principal, is to continue to improve learning outcomes for all students at Cleve Area School. To do this we all need to

work together as a strong team. As leaders we need to keep challenging ourselves and work closely with our team members in a

proactive manner. As teachers we need to continue to build positive relationships in the class and provide an engaging curriculum

to challenge our students. As parents we need to work positively and proactively with the teachers to support the learning. I want

all of us to adopt a, no fail, no blame, no excuses approach to learning. Cleve is ‘a great place to learn’ and there are many

examples of Cleve students who have completed all their schooling in Cleve and have been able to achieve their goals. I want

parents to work with us to improve the educational service so that your children can continue their education in our local school. Thank you Ray Marino, Principal

DEPUTY NEWS We’re back! 3 days in and you can almost feel the excitement of things returning to a more normal way of school life. As Ray

mentioned earlier though, we still need to be vigilant with our hygiene and limit the amount of people we have moving around

within the school. In the holidays we managed to get more taps installed in the sinks, in the primary classes, to make hand

washing an easier process. The primary teachers, whilst enjoying catching up with parents around the primary building, have

commented that the student’s independence skills and level of being responsible for themselves increased two fold during last

term. Remember that the teachers are always available via Dojo or phone if you do need to contact them with any issues or

concerns. If you need to see your child’s teacher in person, please remember to sign in at the front office.

I have spent time this week visiting classrooms and have been amazed with how quickly the students have re-engaged with their

learning. The R/1’s were busy programming Beebots and getting them to move around objects on the floor. The 4/5’s were busy

planning, filming and presenting their own segments for a Behind the News (BTN) type show. The Year 11 and 12’s are enjoying

having Mr Needham in Metal and Wood and have already forgotten my name!

Reflecting back on the last part of Term 2, we had Sam Hunt’s R/1’s do a great job presenting the Primary Assembly via Zoom.

To be able to be so confident to ‘talk’ to the TV and project their voice was enjoyable to watch. I hope everyone who was able to

link in enjoyed the show.

I’m looking forward to us hopefully having a more settled term than last and watching the progress of the students learning. A big

thankyou to all the parents and care givers who supported their children during unsettled times last term. Your support of the

school was invaluable to ensure that the students learning wasn’t affected anywhere near as much as it could have been. That

also reminds me of how many millionaire readers we have in the school. Thanks for listening to your children read, as we know

that listening to reading is so important in the develop of the students love and development of language and enthusiasm for

learning. Please remember that at any time you have any concerns, issues or ideas, please feel free to contact your child’s class teacher,

in the first instance, or Ray or myself. We are more than happy to discuss how we can continue to work together to improve our

school.

Trevor McDonough, Deputy Principal

SACE & VET Family Information Sessions Wednesday, Week 3 August 5, 2020 4pm - 5.30pm. Families of students going into Year 10, 11 and 12 at Cleve Area School in 2021 are invited along to learn about the many pathways available for achieving SACE, Apprenticeships and Traineeships, or University entrance. Meet some of the key stakeholders in the process and talk to former students about their experiences. This meeting will precede 2021 subject counselling and offer importance advice on what is available and how it might suit your student. As social distancing rules may impact on how this event is offered, we would appreciate expressions of interest for online or face-to-face attendance - please email [email protected] with your preference.
