… from the desk of the Clevedon Community & Business Association. Hi everyone,

The CCBA constitution has now been restructured so we can cover all the community and business projects we have on our ‘to do’

list. We held a Special General Meeting to vote on updating our constitution to include, among other things, incorporating community

name, membership and activities, increasing our catchment to Wairoa District and surrounding areas, emailing and internet banking,

and a clause added for subcommittees.

Subcommittees are how we are getting things done around Clevedon. Following are some of the subcommittee news from our 2016

Projects Update.

Round Up: Mariette, Sue and her fantastic team continue to do an amazing job with the Roundup. It does not come without

challenges but we feel this is an integral part of the Community and are proud to support the Roundup.

Santa Parade: Planning is well underway towards the 2016 Santa Parade. A subcommittee has been formed and they have

started on preparations and coercion of local groups and businesses to get involved. If anyone wants to put their names

forward to help or register a float, please get in touch with the CCBA.

CCBA long-term strategy: Catalyst Advisory have just completed the draft report which outlines a long-term strategy for

the CCBA. This covers topics including communication, marketing and projects. The CCBA will be discussing this draft

report over the next month with the intention of implementing outcomes to better serve the Clevedon community and local

businesses.

The CCBA would like to thank ATEED and the Franklin Local Board for their on-going support towards this project.

Again, I would just like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who is undertaking CCBA projects for all their hard work, passion and professional effort. There are plenty of community projects and business projects underway and Clevedon is unique and

very lucky to have such passionate locals who are proactive and positive. Regards

Ed Hall – Chairman, Clevedon Community & Business Association

Quiz Night at the Clevedon Corner Café Monday 21st November 7.30 pm

All are welcome to come along to our end of year meeting and join a Quiz focusing on environmental and local knowledge. Come

along and meet some fellow landcarers.

Project Crimson’s Trees that Count

WRL will be providing the number of trees it has been involved in planting to help this project establish the total number of native trees

planted in New Zealand this year. The following extract from their newsletter gives more details.

“Nature’s Project Crimson, in collaboration with The Tindall Foundation, Pure Advantage and the Department of Conservation is

developing a major national initiative to mobilise New Zealanders to plant millions more native trees to mitigate climate change.

Trees That Count will:

• count the number of native trees planted annually in New Zealand

• set annual targets to increase that number

• motivate people and organisations to contribute financially and in kind

• build community capability to support the achievement of the target”

Project Crimson (www.projectcrimson.org.nz) was established in 1990 to restore pohutukawa & rata and since then has broadened its

work and its Goals as follows:

“Manage major native restoration projects that have capacity for high impact in New Zealand

Deliver environmental education programmes that focus on biodiversity

Support community and iwi pohutukawa and rata initiatives in medium/high-need areas

Be the knowledge-bank for pohutukawa and rata, advocate for the species and provide scientific research in metrosideros”

MANUKA REPLACING PINES

The bare hills above Morton Timber Co. yard on North Road have been re-planted with manuka. This shows that the Whitford Forest

managers see the benefits of manuka arising from carbon credits and honey production are as commercially attractive as alternatives.

Although a monoculture initially, manuka are nature’s nursery so in years to come we can expect to see a wide range of other species

emerge. Let’s hope other landowners follow this example.

MESSAGE FROM JESSIE MUNRO, AUTHOR: Voices of Belonging: A History of Clevedon–Te Wairoa Dear Roundup readers,

I have greatly appreciated the wide interest shown in the recent publication of Voices of Belonging: A History of Clevedon–Te Wairoa,

written for Clevedon & Districts Historical Society. For accuracy in current reading and future reference, I’d be grateful if you would

note these corrections to inadvertent errors I have discovered:

p.20, the first line to read: ‘Paramount Ngāi Tai rangatira Tara Te Irirangi, holding a tewhatewha.’

p.28, the caption to read: ‘The headland of Pāwhetau, with the road to Kawakawa Bay in the foreground.’

p.730: the date of 1887 to replace 1878, as in: ‘the decision was made to replace the 1887 kauri church…’

Thank you. Jessie Munro

Founded in 1892, we are really proud as it is one of the oldest Clubs in the country. Previous Committees have served the Club and Community so well, ensuring the Club’s longevity and viability well into the 21st century. The time has come to put fresh life into the playing courts and Clubrooms. Members will be aware that the courts sub-base has deteriorated badly due to water pooling and poor drainage. We want to implement a stronger court foundation that will give a minimum of 30 years usage. This doesn’t come cheap and will require a really big contribution from the Club (thanks to all previous Committees for fundraising over the years). In addition we’ve been hitting up all the funders we can think of, so any local businesses or developers, particularly those that may be new to Clevedon, please consider making a really worthwhile donation to the Tennis Club with our growing Community. Your reward will be good advertising at our Club and Tournament, as well as providing much enjoyment and pleasure to the players in the Club and Community.

FIRESIDE BRIDGE CLUB CLEVEDON The club meets every Wednesday from 10.15 to about 2.15 at All Souls Church Hall , 49 North Road in Clevedon for friendly duplicate bridge, with usually 7 or more tables. CLEVEDON AND DISTRICT HISTORICAL SOCIETY The Universal Suffrage Petition of 1893 for women to get the right to vote is to be moved along with the treaty of Waitangi from the National Archives to the National Library. Nearly 32,000 New Zealand women signed the petition including 56 from Clevedon - Te Wairoa. The curator of this project Stephanie Lush is keen to use this as a time to add some information about as many of the petitioners as possible (about 100 words on each).Jessie Munro our author of Voices of Belonging, supports this and wants to find out more about the women of our district on the petition. If an ancestor of yours signed the petition please contact Jessie at jessie.munro@xtra,co.nz or leave a message with your Clevedon and District Historical society at [email protected] The names of the 56 petitioners can be found on display boards in the McNicol Homestead, and in Voices of Belonging (pages 280–283, and 246–247). Hi all from your Clevedon Community Constable,

Our area is still getting hit with burglaries and with the weather warming up more people from outside the area will be moving around

to enjoy the beaches and parks.

I urge people to always be security-aware. If you are heading outside to do some gardening, sunbathing or work in the garage - take a

minute to lock your doors and secure your windows.

Burglars are very quick to move along from house to house, flat to flat, trying doors and windows. If they're secure, burglars will

move onto the next one.

Remember most burglaries are crimes of opportunity and that your home is vulnerable whether you live in the Papakura CBD or out in

a rural property in Clevedon.

Our roads continue to cause us many problems, speed being a major factor and intersections, stop means STOP. As you all will be

aware there have been two fatal crashes in the area recently.

We must all drive to the conditions and if you do see cases of bad driving you can report it by phoning *555 or going on line to the NZ

Police website and report a bad driver. For emergencies such as injury car accidents call 111.

Dial *555 FREE from a mobile phone to report road incidents which are urgent but not life-threatening. This includes such things as

non-injury crashes, erratic driving, traffic congestion, breakdowns and obstructions on the highway. Your call will go to a Police

Communications Centre but will be given lower priority than 111 calls.

You can also go on line to the New Zealand Police website and fill in “Report a bad driver online form”. This report is for non-urgent

incidents of poor driving where you do not wish the offender to be prosecuted. Incidents include dangerous overtaking, crossing the

centre line, tailgating or holding up traffic on a motorway. If you can provide a registration plate number, Police will write to the driver.

Your identity is not disclosed.

Also concerning me is several reports of members of the public being intimidated at our local parks and beaches, we have beautiful

parks and beaches in our area for all to enjoy. People have reported to me that there has been intimidation, vandalism, alcohol and drug

use going on in these places.

If you see or experience any of these behaviours do not hesitate to call 111. These places are for all to enjoy in a safe family

environment.

Cheers, Jas

CLEVEDON VOLUNTEER FIRE BRIGADE

Michelle De Graaf – 021 504 300 Mike Kelly – 021 747 123 Bruce Jones – 0274 882 803

CLEVEDON VOLUNTEER FIRE STATION: 292 8612

IN CASE OF EMERGENCY DIAL 111 _____________________________________

This month has been a busier month for the brigade in terms of callouts. We were called to five motor vehicle accidents and two rubbish

fires since the last issue, bringing our total calls so far this year to seventy three.

We have also welcomed two new members into the brigade, Sydney Jones and Matthew Montgomerie. When they and a few of their

colleagues have finished their basic recruit course our brigade will have in excess of twenty operational members which is a great position for

us to be in. The more members we have the easier it is to share the work.

This month we also held our annual honours night at the Clevedon Hotel. This night gives us the chance to celebrate our achievements as a

brigade and to thank the members for their efforts over the year. It is also the time where we get to honour those members who have

reached service milestones and awards. A certificate is given at three years, a medal at five years and a gold star medal at twenty five years.

Every second year (after the award of a five year medal), a bar is issued. This year we honoured the following people for their service to the

brigade and the Clevedon community:

Bruce Jones 33 years James Brookman 15 years

Gail Powell 9 years Ben Herlihy 5 years

Michelle de Graaf 5 years James Harkness 3 years

We also awarded Alana Vining our “Most Improved Firefighter” trophy and Ben Herlihy our “Firefighter of the Year” trophy.

We have received a number of calls to rubbish fires recently and are often asked about what can and can’t be burnt at the moment. The fire

season is currently “Open” meaning that you can light a fire provided that it complies with the Council’s rules. This information and these

rules are available on the Auckland Council website. If we are called to a fire, then it is up to the judgement of the Officer in Charge at the

time as to whether it complies or not. The basic rules for a compliant fire are;

fire must be used in a safe and considerate manner

be lit and be of a size that burns out during daylight hours

no fire to be lit during the hours of darkness

have no green vegetation included

have no rubber, or plastic items, or toxic materials included

have no treated timber or building waste included

(Copied from the Council’s website)

We are still interested in more members and would like to talk to you if joining the brigade is of interest to you. We are especially looking

for people that are available for callouts through the day (shift workers or people who work locally), live within a few kilometers of the

station or have had previous firefighting experience. Please come and see us on Tuesday nights from 7:00 PM or call on the numbers below.

The hardest part about joining the Brigade is coming to the station the first time!

Monthly column from Andrew Bayly, MP for Hunua I had the pleasure of attending the Clevedon Business Association meeting recently and I spoke about my trip to the Arctic. I have also been in discussion with Constable Jason Young about Policing issues in the area, particularly as we are moving into the summer season. It is great having an extra Police resource in Clevedon. Given we are moving into a period of communities holding various events, I thought it is worth clarifying some of the issues surrounding home bakers and the Food Act 2014. The purpose of the Food Act is to make sure all food sold is safe and suitable. How the new law affects home bakers depends on whether they are selling for profit or for charitable purposes. Home bakers operating a business – whether large or small - must register under the Food Act and get checked to make sure that the food they sell is safe. If people are selling products for fundraising – whether for charity, clubs, cultural or other causes – they don’t need to register (as long as they don’t do this more than 20 times a year). While fundraising activities don’t need to register they are still subject to the primary duty of the Act – to produce safe and suitable food. The new law sets a transition period for existing businesses, giving them time to work out what they need to do and register. Home bakers who were already operating prior to 1 March 2016 have until March 2018 to apply for registration. More information is available at www.mpi.govt.nz/foodact. Authorised by Andrew Bayly, MP for Hunua, 7 Wesley Street, Pukekohe

Constituent clinics are now held in Clevedon, Beachlands and Whitford every six weeks.

Congratulations to Michelle Isemonger, who has been crowned Miss Auckland following months of charity fundraising events and volunteer work in support of her chosen charities Ronald McDonald House and Koru Care. Eighteen-year-old Michelle is a Clevedon resident and attended Clevedon School. She is currently a Year 13 student at Howick College and will begin a Bachelor of Commerce in Economics and Finance at Auckland University next year. Michelle is looking forward to continuing her volunteer work and fundraising for various charities and community groups in the Auckland area over the next 12 months. She is proud to represent Auckland and will compete in Miss World New Zealand early next year.

Attention Runners: Just an observation from one of our readers “I've noticed lately people walking & running on the wrong side of the road. When using rural roads or roads without footpaths please walk/run on the side of the road facing the oncoming traffic (ie. the right hand side). It is very disconcerting driving up behind a walker/runner who cannot see you. A high-vis vest would also be appreciated and thank you to those who already wear one.”

Valley Studio News… Numerous varied musical and artistic events have brought challenges and triumphs for the members of The Valley Studio in Ness Valley

over the past year.

Highlights have included winning all nine Ensemble Classes and both Championship trophies at the South Auckland Competitions in July,

with singers from seven schools coming together under Gina’s tutelage in small and large groups.

The Macleans College Chorale reached the prestigious Finale of The Big Sing Choir Festival for the 7th year running, after a long audition

process that narrowed down 250 choirs nationwide to just 24. The choirs at King’s College also competed to a very high standard, with

Kappella winning a coveted Regional Award. The non-auditioned Chapel Choir at King’s continues to grow in size and ability, taking an

important role in school life.

Examination, scholarship, competition and audition results have continued to be strong, with many successes in university placements in NZ

and internationally and several students selected for national ensembles.

It is most encouraging that a number of graduates from the Valley Studio have chosen music as a career path. Lucy Reeve, Jess Matthews,

Bernice Potter and Josh Helm are all well-established young professionals in the music teaching profession, and several more are involved in

Clevedon community events, including Helen Jarrett, Hannah Edwards and Martin Meyer. Many others are currently undertaking tertiary

studies in music and enriching their communities in a variety of ways.

Perhaps the most exciting development is the much-awaited concert appearances in Italy on Oct 26th and 28th, where Gina will be joined by

a remarkable young Valley Studio graduate, Christie Cook, who is currently undertaking Post Graduate studies in voice in Treviso, just

north of Venice. Christie studied voice, piano and theory with Gina for ten years, before completing an Honours Degree at Otago University.

The concerts will be all the more special, as both mothers, Jan Sanders and Delia Cook are making the journey from Clevedon to Italy to

hear their daughters share the stage, live in Europe.

Gina is currently in Germany, having just completed two acclaimed performances of “Lieber Horton” an opera-musical, in Stuttgart. The

role of Maisie was written especially for Gina and the composer, Vladimir Romanov, directed the performances. A major recital (benefit

concert for child cancer) at the prestigious Schützinger Showroom, with Herr Romanov at the piano followed. This attracted patrons from

several parts of the country, including the Chief Executive of the German Child Cancer Foundation. Then in the fair isle of Jersey, another

major fundraising concert for the Red Cross with the musicians of St Thomas, and a guest appearance with one of Jersey’s top choirs,

Polyphonie. Masterclasses and workshops have been slotted in amongst the concerts, keeping Gina very busy until her return in early

November.

Closer to home, she will be directing the all-comers choir for the Clevedon Presbyterian Carol Service at St Andrews on Dec 18th at 7.30pm.

Rehearsals start on Wed 9th November, 7.30 – 9.15pm and all are welcome to join – no audition required! Gina will also appear at the

Kawakawa Bay Christmas in the Park on Dec 11th and is looking forward to another fun-filled family event in this great community.
