Cleveland Metroparks offers the perfect opportunity for golf with its eight courses located conveniently throughout Cuyahoga County. The golf courses vary from a sporting par three at Shawnee Hills to championship layouts at Manakiki and Sleepy Hollow that challenge even the best golfers.

Each Cleveland Metroparks golf course offers a unique golfing experience. Whether you are a beginner or a skilled player, there is a Cleveland Metroparks golf course that fits your game.

OutingsCleveland Metroparks golf courses are available for group outings. Groups, large and small, can reserve a golf course for exclusive use. Manakiki, Sleepy Hollow, Shawnee Hills, Seneca and Big Met golf courses can host outings up to 128 players. Shawnee Hills Par 3, Mastick Woods, Little Met and Washington golf courses can accommodate small groups for nine holes of golf. Interested groups can make a reservation up to one year in advance. The outing groups are provided scoresheets, markers, scoreboards and signs. Also available at some courses are three types of instant handicap systems.

Customized Cleveland Metroparks merchandise can be ordered in advance of the outing. The golf courses’ quality catering professionals can provide a snack, a light or full-course meal in a buffet or sit-down setting, before or after the event, or at the turn. Golf staff can suggest registration packets and prizes for hole-in-one, closest to the pin, longest drive, and straightest drive, as well as raffle prizes. Clubhouse managers can arrange to have an organization’s name, logo, and the date of the event imprinted on requested golf merchandise, to give an outing a personalized touch. These courses are regarded among the most challenging courses in Northeast Ohio. Manakiki’s classic Donald Ross design has a marvelous variety of holes and elevation changes with doglegs, water hazards and mirror canyon holes. Sleepy Hollow has fast and tricky greens and is, arguably, the toughest public course in the area.

B. Then you are an intermediate skill level golfer. To maximize your golfing experience try Shawnee Hills, Big Met and Seneca golf courses. These 18 hole courses offer the highest standards in golf including well maintained greens and tees for the total golf experience. Perennial favorites, these courses are attractive and playable, yet challenging enough for the advanced player. Lessons are available from Cleveland Metroparks golf pros to help improve your short game or straighten out those drives.

C. Then you are a novice golfer. Mastick Woods, Little Met, Shawnee Hills Par 3, and Washington golf courses offer the perfect setting to hone your golfing skills and improve your short game. These beautiful courses with gentle rolling terrain provide the perfect leisurely golf experience. Call any of these courses to find out about clinics, workshops, and lessons.

The golf season in Cleveland Metroparks begins in mid-March and continues through December, weather permitting. The courses are open daily from dawn to dusk.

Located 17 miles east of downtown Cleveland, Manakiki Golf Course is an elegant public course. The classic Donald Ross design has been host to such legends as Arnold Palmer, Tommy Bolt, Dr. Cory Middlecoff, Sam Snead and many others who have strolled the hillsides of Manakiki.

Manakiki is rich in history. Its name is believed to be a Native American word for maple forest reflective of the predominance of maples along tree-lined fairways. The 220 acres were originally the summer estate of Howard Hanna, a prominent Cleveland industrialist. The property was subsequently obtained by a group from the Willowick Club and converted into Manakiki Country Club. Course construction started in 1928 and the first ball was hit on July 29, 1929 by Otto C. Weke, the first club president.

The Hanna Mansion was expanded into a beautiful clubhouse. In 1963, the east wing of the original Hanna Mansion, which mirrored the existing west wing, was torn down due to a small fire and deterioration. The west wing was renovated to preserve its structural integrity and history.

In 1944, the property owners, James and Fannie Brown, offered to donate the course to the City of Cleveland. The city graciously declined the offer and it was then sold to Cleveland Metroparks for one dollar, under the condition that it must forever remain a golf course. A plaque in honor of the former owners still stands near the 18th green.

From 1944 through 1960, Manakiki was operated as a private country club. On January 1, 1961 after the country club’s lease was not renewed, Manakiki was open for public play.

“In one respect Manakiki is unique. In almost every golf course, no matter how modern or how expensively constructed it may be, there usually are two or three holes that resemble each other. That is because the architect must do what he can with the topography he is presented. Ordinarily he can’t help but make some of the holes similar in design, but not at Manakiki. Every hole is different. As you go around the course, you will never have the idea of sameness from any tee. That, I believe, is one of the most interesting features of this very splendid golf course.” Donald Ross.

Manakiki has been rated by Links Magazine and Golf Digest’s Travel & Leisure magazine as one of Donald Ross’s top ten public golf courses.

With its spectacular views of the Cuyahoga River Valley and classic layout, Sleepy Hollow Golf Course ranks as one of the great golf challenges in Ohio. The punitive nature of the course can clearly be seen in the deep ravines that can come into play on 13 holes. The 58 bunkers and small sloped greens present further challenges along with several large mature trees at critical points on the course.

The course was designed by the flamboyant architect, Stanley Thompson, and opened in 1924 as a private country club on land leased from Cleveland Metroparks. The course opened to public play in 1963. The early holes on both nines play downhill and down the prevailing wind, therefore seeming shorter than the yardage indicates. The incoming holes play uphill and into the wind, and can play surprisingly long. Almost half of the greens have challenging slopes front to back.

It would be hard to find another course where so many holes are praised for their aesthetic beauty and difficulty. Hole #2 is a classic Thompson monster par 3 and with the tees back, it’s a driver tee shot for all but the longest of hitters. It is followed by par 4 hole #3, which stretches 481 yards from the farthest tee position. The back nine starts with two difficult holes. The 476 yard #11 provides a scenic view from the tee. Classic strategic holes can be found at #14, a short par 5 and #17, a short par 4.

Sleepy Hollow was recently named #4 in Ohio on Golf Week’s Best Course You Can Play list, #1 municipal course in Ohio and #19 in the U.S.

In 1989, Shawnee Hills in Bedford Reservation expanded to 27 holes, including an18-hole regulation course and a 9-hole Par 3 course. The original 18 holes were designed by local architect Ben Zink in 1957. Zink, a golf course superintendent at Acacia and Kirtland, designed Berkshire Hills in Chesterland and the former Landerhaven Golf Course in Mayfield Heights. The expansion of the course was designed and constructed by Cleveland Metroparks staff with the exception of “gorge holes” #11 and #12 which were completed through a contract. From the original 9-hole regulation course, only four holes remain intact.

Shawnee Hills is the most versatile course in Cleveland Metroparks. Lessons are available and players can practice on the 29-station driving range. Beginners can enhance their skills on the sporty Par 3 course. At the 18-hole course, the front nine with its gentle rolling terrain and water hazards has been likened to a “Florida” course. The challenging back nine with its hills and large pines,

maples, oaks, and beautiful Deer Lick Creek, is reminiscent of a course in the Carolinas. As you walk down the hill from the #10 green to the #11 tee, take note of the marker dedicated to Hannah Egbert. Most of the course was built on the Egbert’s farm. Hannah was one of the Egbert sisters and died at the age of three in 1843.

The most difficult hole at Shawnee Hills, and possibly the toughest hole in Cleveland Metroparks, is #4. It is a converted par 5 hole, now a 451 yard uphill, tree-lined, dogleg left par 4.

The best feature of Shawnee Hills is its versatility. Players can enjoy the game no matter what their skill level.

Regulation Course

Big Met Golf Course (originally named Course Number One), believed to be Ohio’s most played golf course, has hosted over 7,000,000 rounds of golf since it opened in 1926. During the “golden era of golf,” in the early 1920s, the sports director of the Cleveland Press, Rodney C. Sutton, proposed that the Cleveland Metropolitan Park Board build a golf course in the Rocky River Valley. Local golf enthusiasts persuaded the board that golf was a growing sport and that a “pay as you play” course was needed and would be supported.

The original course design was completed by Stanley Thompson and has since undergone several major changes. When Big Met opened, golfers traveled to the course by streetcar, foot and horseback.

In 1964, a fairway irrigation system was installed and in 1967, holes #7 and #8 were lengthened and remodeled. In 1998 an irrigation and drainage system was added throughout the course. A lake was added on the 5th hole to add a risk/reward decision to this short

par 5. A continuous cart path was constructed so golf carts could operate regardless of weather conditions.

With gentle rolling hills, moderate length, eight bunkers, and neatly trimmed rough, Big Met Golf Course has the ideal blend of scenic beauty and playability, yet the course still offers a challenge for the advanced player. A dominant characteristic of Big Met is the dike which holds back the Rocky River and can be seen from several vantage points.

The course isn’t the only thing that’s “green” at Big Met! The clubhouse, opened in 2006, blends state-of-the-art design with environmentally sensitive “green” building techniques featuring amenities that benefit golfers and the environment, too!

Some of the features implemented at Big Met Clubhouse to insure LEED (Leadership in Energy Environment Design) bronze certification include: reduction in site disturbance, energy efficient mechanical equipment, construction waste management, use of recycled content building materials, use of native, drought tolerant landscape plants to reduce water usage, and using low-emitting and non-toxic materials to improve air quality and chemical sensitivity for visitors – including building materials, entryway flooring and carpeting.

The ultimate goal was a clubhouse that is not only beautiful, but also has environmentally-friendly amenities. With this combination, Cleveland Metroparks mission of conservation, education and recreation is blended into a building that’s “up to par” for Ohio’s most popular public golf course.

“Once for Legends, Now for Every Golfer’’

Using WPA funds, the City of Cleveland opened Seneca Golf Course on August 1, 1940 to provide “fine, low-cost, pay-as-you-play golfing” to westsiders. Only nine holes were opened with the purpose of gaining revenue to buy equipment to complete the other 27 holes the following year. Using a Parkland Design, where not a lot of earth was moved to create land features, both 18-hole courses have tree-lined fairways along gently rolling terrain and small greens.

The #8 hole on the A course is 605 yards. When built in the early 1940s that length of hole was quite rare. The original B course included two enormous par fives of 582 yards (#3) and 572 yards (#15) as well as numerous long and difficult par fours. The B course also features three ponds that have proved very formidable water hazards.

The original plans for the clubhouse could not be completed when funds ran out. As the course matured patronage steadily increased and by the early 1950s Seneca was known as one of the finest 36-hole golf courses in America and attracted several national championship matches despite the fact there were “no facilities whatever except a tin shed.” The long needed clubhouse, built in 1954, included a dining room, locker rooms, a

pro shop and living quarters for the clubhouse caretaker.

Golfing legends such as Arnold Palmer, Gene Littler, Billy Casper, and Jack Nicklaus (as an amateur) visited the course in its heyday. The Carling Open Invitational was played at Seneca

in 1959 and was won by Dow Finsterwald as Casper, Nicklaus and Palmer did not score well. Quoted in The Plain Dealer before his appearance in the 1959 Carling Open, Arnold Palmer said, “I played Seneca a lot of times when I was in Cleveland. It’s a good, testing golf course.”

Both the A and B courses retain their original length, but now will include a fourth set of tees as Cleveland Metroparks adds Family Tees. Situated anywhere from 60 to 275 yards out, the Family Tees are designed so that a family can play together with each family member playing from tees appropriate for their age or skill level.

The first Cleveland Metroparks golf course, Little Met (originally named Course Number 2), was built as a temporary golf course in 1924. Its purpose was to stimulate interest as well as to satisfy the desire of anxious golfers prior to the opening of Big Met Golf Course. Seven years later, the demand for golf continued and the Cleveland Metropolitan Park Board decide to continue operating the course.

Originally, the fairways of Little Met were merely old meadows. Putting greens were constructed by smoothing the land and sowing grass seed. Today, it’s still evident that some of the tees and greens are level with the surrounding terrain. In 1982, six tees were raised and an irrigation system was installed. More recently, the irrigation system has been automated and additional drainage has

been installed to offer the best playing conditions. The architect for Little Met was most likely Stanley Thompson, who designed a total of 27 holes in Rocky River Reservation.

Three quarters of a century later the course continues to stimulate interest in the game of golf as well as satisfying the golfers on the westside of Cleveland. Little Met, along with nearby Mastick Woods and Big Met golf courses, are conveniently located less than 20 minutes from downtown Cleveland and less than 5 minutes from the airport, and continue to offer some the best values in the area.

Mastick Woods Golf Course Like the two other courses in the Rocky River Valley, Mastick Woods Golf Course gives the feeling of being in the midst of an Appalachian forest. The vista is almost entirely trees and sky. The course layout was completed by Harry Burkhardt, the first superintendent of golf for Cleveland Metroparks, and was constructed by Park District staff in 1964.

The 9-hole course was constructed to ease the crowded conditions at Big Met and Little Met golf courses and offers golfers a special experience. With its executive length, Mastick Woods Golf Course is ideal for juniors, new players or those who are looking for a quick, leisurely golf experience.

Washington Golf Course is the highlight of Cleveland Metroparks Washington Reservation in the cities of Newburgh Heights and Cleveland featuring a beautiful 9-hole, par 29 golf course and 26-station driving range.

Financed by The First Tee of Cleveland and managed by Cleveland Metroparks, the course opened in spring 2006. The First Tee of Cleveland Inc. is an official chapter of a national initiative that promotes youth character development and life enhancing values through the game of golf. Washington Golf Course also represents a unique collaboration with the City of Cleveland and the Cleveland Metropolitan School District,

through partnership with the adjacent Washington Park Environmental Studies Academy.

Washington Golf Course is designated as an “Audubon International Certified Gold Signature Sanctuary” through the Audubon International Signature Program recognizing the high quality of environmental stewardship reflected in the golf course design and maintenance. Signature certification is awarded only to select courses that are designed, constructed and maintained according to Audubon International’s precise planning standards and environmental disciplines.

Golf Services operates Cleveland Metroparks eight golf courses and strives to maximize equal access to tee times among leagues, outings, tournaments, and individual golfers. For specific information about leagues, outings and tournaments, contact the desired golf course directly.

For general inquiries or comments, call Golf Services Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 440-232-7247.

Leagues Cleveland Metroparks has a schedule of morning and afternoon golf leagues at each golf course Monday through Friday. Golf leagues consist of a minimum of 12 players and are governed by regulations that outline the terms and conditions of league play. All league arrangements are confirmed by a written agreement. Groups interested in forming a league should inquire at the desired golf course’s clubhouse. Golf leagues typically begin the first week of May and continue through the last week of August.

Tournaments and Special Events A wide variety of special events are hosted annually at Cleveland Metroparks golf courses, including instructional clinics and lessons, and competitive events such as a series of scrambles and better ball play, adult/junior combination events, and the Greater Cleveland Amateur Championship and Course Championships. Additional special days on the courses include free golf for juniors after 1 p.m. with a paid adult on Memorial Day, July 4th and Labor Day, and a nighttime golfing experience - Moonlight Golf. Junior Golf Programs Young golfers, ages 6 to 17, are encouraged to learn and enjoy the game of golf through junior golf clinics and summer junior golf leagues. Group and individual golf lessons are also available from PGA/LPGA-certified instructors. Cleveland Metroparks golf courses are host to a number of annual junior golf events. The golf courses also serve as “home courses” for practice rounds and golf matches for high school and college golf teams.

The Clubs-For-Kids program allows golfers to donate used golf clubs to be retrofitted for junior golfers. These donations help keep costs and entry fees to a minimum for the new, young golfers.

There is a junior greens fees on weekdays, and weekends and holidays after 2 p.m. for golfers under 17. Contact the golf course clubhouses for the specific greens fees rates. Food and Beverage ServiceFood and beverage service including snack bar service, special tournament and golf outing catering is certainly an integral part of any golf experience. Golf is a popular pastime and competitive sport that is enjoyed by many. The enjoyment of the game, however, is often dependent upon golfers following basic rules and etiquette. The following guidelines have been established by Cleveland Metroparks to help ensure a positive golf experience.

Golf Etiquette/Ready Golf• Please replace divots, repair ball marks and rake sand

traps.• Play “ready golf.” Be prepared for each shot and keep up

with the group directly ahead. Cleveland Metroparks par time is 2 1/4 hours for 9 holes and 4 1/2 hours for 18 holes. Approximately 15 minutes per hole.

• 18-hole players should break for only five minutes upon completion of the front nine. A longer break could result in the loss of access to the #10 tee.

• Fast Paced Sundays, designed to encourage all calibers of golfers to adhere to Cleveland Metroparks par time, is in effect at all 18 hole courses. Tips, incentives and new ranger policies are in place. Check courses for details.

General Policies• Each golfer must have a receipt from the cashier. • Each golfer must have a bag and clubs. • Fivesomes or more are not permitted on the golf course

at any time. • Holes must be played in sequence. • Players should not hit until players in front are out of

range.

• The Starter will group golfers into foursomes whenever possible.

• Playing more than one golf ball per golfer is not permitted on the golf course.

• The golfer is responsible for any damage or bodily harm caused by the ball or club.

• Cleveland Metroparks is not responsible for injuries on the golf course. Play is at your own risk.

Walk-On Times• Every fourth time will be kept available for walk-

on golfers with the exception of league, outing or tournament periods. Walk-on tee times are not available at Sleepy Hollow and Manakiki golf courses.

• Walk-on times will be assigned from a waiting list. • Each person may obtain a maximum of one walk-on

time.

Open Play • For periods when starting times are not in effect, players

will tee off on a first-come, first-serve, in-person basis. • When a wait exists, one person may hold a spot for a

maximum of one foursome. • During heavy play periods, all players will be paired

together as necessary.

Ages • Cleveland Metroparks offers junior and senior rates on

weekdays, and weekends and holidays after 2 p.m. The rates do not apply to evening leagues, outings and tournaments. After November 1, the senior, junior and fall rates are in effect everyday.

• The senior rate is for players 60 years or over. Proper I.D. must be shown upon request.

• The junior rate is for players 17 years or under. Proper I.D. must be shown upon request.

• Generally, children must be six years or older in order to be on the golf course as a player, caddie or spectator. At Mastick Woods and Shawnee Hills Par 3, children ages 3 and over, accompanied by a parent or guardian may tee off, be a caddie, or spectator between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday and weekends and holidays after 3 p.m.

Power and Hand Carts • Power cart drivers must be at least 18 years old and have

a valid driver’s license. Proper I.D. is required upon request.

• Power cart drivers are liable for any damage or bodily harm caused by the cart.

• Two riders maximum are permitted in a power cart. • Three bags maximum are permitted in a power cart. • Power carts must be kept at least 20 feet from the greens

at all times. • Manakiki, Sleepy Hollow, Big Met and Washington have

continuous cart paths. Under wet or soft conditions, power carts may be required to remain on the path.

• Hand carts must be kept off greens, collars and tees.

Alcoholic Beverages • Alcohol must be purchased from the concession facility.

Carry-on alcoholic beverages are not permitted. • Coolers are not permitted on the golf courses (except for

medical reasons).

Dress Code • Golf shirts must be worn at all times. Sleeves and collars

are required on men’s shirts, ladies may wear a sleeveless, collared golf shirt. Tank tops, tube tops, halter tops, mesh shirts, or similar attire are not permitted.

• Golf slacks, skirts or mid-length shorts must be worn at all times. (Swimming attire, short-shorts, cutoffs, jogging suits, sweat pants, and similar attire are not permitted.)

• Proper footwear must be worn at all times. (High heels, sharp heels, lug shoes, knobby rubber spikes, or shoes deemed harmful to the golf course are not permitted.)

Rain Checks/Weather• During severe weather, lightning or thunder, greens fees

are not sold and players are not permitted to start or continue after the turn.

• If inclement weather causes players to cancel the round, players are eligible for a refund if they have not started. Once players have started, they are eligible for a rain check only.

• Out-of-town players may apply for a refund check.

• The rain check policy also applies to power carts, pull carts and rental clubs.

 • A rain check is honored for a period of one year from the date of issue.

• When redeeming a rain check, a player may upgrade from 9 holes to 18 holes. The difference (extra 9 hole rate) will be charged.

• A rain check from one Cleveland Metroparks course may be redeemed at another. If the price is greater, the difference will be charged. If the price is lower, there is no refund or change given.

• Cleveland Metroparks will not issue rain checks for rounds not completed due to darkness.

• A tee reservation not used by a group, due to inclement weather conditions, does not carry over to a later time when conditions are more suitable. The tee reservation would be relinquished and the group would be considered walk-on players with all the applicable rights.

• When the course is officially closed due to inclement weather, upon reopening, the order of tee reservations shall be maintained. An appropriate number of walk-on times will be cancelled.

#10 Tee• Players must have permission from the Tee-Master/

Starter to start on the 10th tee.• 18 hole players who have completed play on the front

nine have the right of way on the 10th tee. 9-hole players deciding to play 18-holes and paying the extra 9-hole rate do not have the right of way on the 10th tee.

• 18-hole players may lose the right of way on the 10th tee if:

- The group plays the front nine in more than Cleveland Metroparks “Par Time” of 2 1∕4 hours.

- The group is more than one hole behind the preceding group.

- The group takes more than a five-minute break after completing the front nine.

- Once a group loses the right of way on the #10 tee, they will be considered open play and may start in order in accordance with normal starting procedures.

- No regular 18-hole play may start on the back nine, except during the use of “wave” or “crossover” tee times.

Spectators• Unauthorized persons such as bicycle riders, joggers,

walkers, hikers, dog walkers, and golf ball hunters are not permitted on the golf course.

• Spectators or caddies are permitted. The spectator rate must be paid and a waiver signed.

• Spectators and caddies are not permitted to play or practice on the golf course at any time.

• There is a maximum of two spectators per foursome, except for tournament spectators.

• Spectators must pay a power cart fee if used.• Children must be six years or older to be on the golf

course as a player, caddie or spectator except as described in the section on “Ages.” (see page 21)

Ultimately, the goal of the Academy is to help individuals meet their personal golf goals, and to learn golf skills, traditions, rules and etiquette. 200 Series - Learn FundamentalsDesigned to present the fundamentals of golf, geared to beginners and players with some experience who want to learn or review the basics of the game through hands-on instruction. Target player level is beginner to 25 handicap.

300 Series - Refine SkillsDesigned to refine specific golf skills and achieve competency in areas of weakness for intermediate level players. Player handicap 10 to 25.

400 Series - Master the GameInstruction of techniques utilized by “better” players to achieve a high level of consistent competency. Player handicap level 10 and below.

500 Series - General InstructionDesigned for general, fundamental basic instruction that is useful for players of every skill level, gender and age.

Academy of Golf

Frost Policy• When a frost delay is in effect, no one should be on the

course, the putting green or any grassy area.• When a frost delay occurs with starting times in effect,

walk-on times will be cancelled as needed. An open play, first-come, first-served starting sheet will be started for walk-on play to play 9 holes only, starting on #10 tee when the frost lifts. There will be a window of time for 16, 9-hole foursomes. The order of regular starting times will be maintained on #1 tee. When a frost delay occurs with no advance starting times, an open play first-come, first- served sheet will be started with 18-hole play starting on #1 tee and 9-hole play starting on #10 tee.

• There may be a window of time for 16, 9-hole foursomes on the #10 tee.

Driving Range• Range balls and any balls that are a part of the driving

range supply are the property of Cleveland Metroparks. Taking any balls in the driving range supply or using range balls on the course is considered theft and strictly prohibited.

• Range balls may only be hit from the designated stations. Hitting from grass or in front of the stations is not permitted.

• For safety reasons, collecting range balls by guests on the ranges, sides of ranges or on the golf courses is not permitted.

• For safety reasons, driving range users and spectators must keep a safe distance from swinging clubs. Children must be under strict supervision.

Golf Etiquette, Rules and Policies

Golf ’s most famous and prolific architect, Donald J. Ross, is credited with designing over 600 courses. Born in 1872 in Dornach, Scotland, Ross died in 1948 in Pinehurst, North Carolina where a memorial museum is located in his honor. Ross designed the Pinehurst courses where he was a golf professional and a superintendent. He also employed over 3,000 people in the golf course construction business and is most famous for his ability to incorporate natural terrain and link his Scottish heritage in his designs.

Ross designed Manakiki Golf Course during the prime of his career. Since the course has had few modifications over the years, it has since attracted attention from “Donald Ross historians.” Some “Ross” traits to note during play are:

• Small rolling greens. The #18 green may be the smallest in the Greater Cleveland area for regulation courses.

• The original bunkers had steep grass walls with sand level at the base. Many of the course’s bunkers have been modernized with curved walls of sand rolling up to level ground. Look for the “untouched” bunkers.

• It was common for Ross to have a short par 3 hole where a player might make a two or a six!

• Typical of Scottish courses, a player may run the ball onto the green as long as it is hit straight on most holes at Manakiki.

• Small tee boxes close to the preceding green. Many of the original tee areas have since been expanded.

Golf Course Architect Donald Ross

One of the most colorful characters in golf history, Stanley Thompson, designed three of the eight golf course in Cleveland Metroparks: Big Met, Little Met and Sleepy Hollow. Thompson, known as the father of strategic golf design, was born in Scotland in 1894 and moved to Toronto, Ontario at an early age. He lived and worked there until he died in 1952.

Thompson made and spent fortunes and was Canada’s most prolific golf architect. Thompson was inducted into the Canadian Golf Hall of Fame in 1980. His “signature” course is the internationally renown Banff Springs Golf Course in the Canadian Rockies. He opened an office in Cleveland in 1924 and designed the Chagrin Valley and Beechmont country clubs. He was nicknamed “The Toronto Terror” partially from his reputation, but mostly from the punitive nature of his courses. Players of Sleepy Hollow Golf Course know the nickname is appropriate!

Some Thompson traits to note during play at Sleepy Hollow:

• Monster par 3, hole #2.

• Strategic design of holes #5, #7, #14 and #17.

• Elevated tee on hole #11.
