Cyclo Cross

On Sunday, 30 October 2016 we are staging round 7 of the Cyclo Cross North East League (CXNE) and will take place at the Middlesbrough Sports Village.

The racing starts at 10:30 with the Vet 50 and women categories, through to

the senior race at 14:30.

SUBS DUE

Membership subs are now due with a deadline of 30th November. Most

members will have received renewal instructions via e mail or on website/face

book. Most of the members that receive a paper copy of the spokesman/newsletter are veteran life members anyway. However if there are

any members who are just turning 70 and are now entitled to life membership

then please just let me know as I don't have date of birth details for long standing members. Also please contact me with any other details you wish to

discuss. Kid’s parents/guardians need to contact me to clarify if their

son/daughter will be remaining with the club for 2017. Thanks, Dave

AGM REPORT Only 19 club members attended this year’s Annual General Meeting. All

Officers of the club remain the same however Steve Binks and Sherry Binks

both stood down from the committee, Steve after 44 years as a member. Shaun

O’Shea and Paul Christon taking their places.

The main proposal was a revamp of the Constitution. The original

constitution was drawn up back in 1958. As such it does not meet British Cycling (and other sports/social bodies) recommendations (e.g. makes no

mention of inclusiveness, safeguarding, anti-bullying etc., all buzzwords of the

modern era). The committee has re-drafted the constitution based on British Cycling’s recommendations and retaining those parts of the original

constitution that have been deemed necessary.

The section of the constitution that covered racing/TT events (both open and club-only) has been removed from the constitution as such and is now an

appendix. This would give the committee greater flexibility to organise events

rather than it all having to be done at the AGM as currently happens. People may be co-opted in to run events at the committee’s discretion throughout the

season. It is hoped that this might lead to an increase in the number of events

being run and the continuation of existing events.

MIKE BINKS MEMORIAL RR Charlie Tanfield (Planet X) became the 40

th winner of the Mike Binks

Memorial Trophy held in conjunction with the Circuit of Welbury races. He

took the win just a few inches ahead of his older brother Harry Tanfield (Pedal

Heaven RT), while Planet X had two riders on the podium with Ben

Hetherington taking third, around 30-40 seconds further back.

The pair had been part of an eight-rider break which got clear about halfway

through the 89-mile race, which used a six-mile circuit from Welbury, up to

Appleton Wiske and back down to Deighton.

The break established a lead of around two and a half minutes on the chasing

bunch, and it soon became apparent that the winner would come from the

break.

But repeated attacks splintered the break, the aggressive tactics whittling down

the numbers until on the final lap just the two Tanfield siblings remained and it was left for Charlie to take the win ahead of Harry.

HILLCLIMB

Congratulations to Josh Teasdale on winning the club’s annual hill climb on

Clay Bank with a new course record time of 5min. 32 secs. 47 solos and 2 tandems left the timekeeper in decent conditions, with Dave Kirton and Shaun

O’Shea being the fastest tandem pairing in 7.48. Toby Tanfield was leading

club rider finishing 3rd

in 6.13 with Richard Lillekar 3 seconds behind.

EVENING SERIES 17 riders put in qualifying rides in this year’s evening series. After a shaky

start due to road works ended up with event 1 being cancelled then the next 2

being transferred to Longnewton. The 17 riders were Diane Mayes,

Paige Mcleod, Barbara Kettle, Sandra Main, Richard Lilleker, Graeme Tate, Stephen Belbin, Toby Tanfield, Dave Kirton, Ian Hutchinson, Ross Turner,

Robert Lee, Steven Turner, Roger Oldroyd, John Kettle, Colin Moore, Joe

Foley.

The Seamer events were then followed by 4 climbs of Clay Bank Evening Se-

ries. The hill climb results base on riders’ best three rides:-

LEAGUE 2000 2016

This year was the 20th

year we have organized the League 2000 starting at the

Motorsports Park in South Bank, with 6 events the first year.

The 2016 edition had 886 rides throughout the year an average of 72 riders per

night with 145 different riders taking part over the 12 rounds. Only 3 riders took part in all 12 rounds our own Rowan Bell and Daniel Thompson

Joel Hurt Planet X and Cillian Lewis Stockton Wheelers.

RESULTS

Club youth Riders have had a successful 2nd part of the season on the road. Pride of place going to Daniel Thompson in winning his category in the Isle of

Man Youth tour. This goes with a number of wins at Middlesbrough Sports

Village and Hetton including the Regional Youth Championships.

Another medalist in the North East Regional Youth Championships was Lewis

Dolan who gained the Silver medal in his age group. Lewis has also had wins

at the Sports Village and Hetton as well as a 3rd place in Doncaster

Toby Tanfield has amassed 62 ranking points this season, picking up wins at

the Sports Village and Hetton.

Other riders with placings are Ross Turner and in their debut season Stacey

Williams and Rowan Bell

50 IN 4 CASTLETON

Sunday saw the latest running of the CWCC “Castleton 50 in 4” Challenge Ride, the final Challenge ride of the season.

Dark, brooding skies put some riders off turning up (you know who you are) but others just manned up, dusted down their Gabbas and got on with the job.

After a quick briefing in the Sports Village car park, the riders set off.

The skies regularly looked threatening throughout the morning and the roads

were clarty & ‘orrible, making some look like they’d ridden a cyclo-cross by the end. Thankfully no major “offs” were reported, other than Nick Smith’s

saddlebag. Another one for Dave’s book of excuses – “my saddle bag

slipped”.

50 hard-fought miles later, Chris Sleath of Adept was first man back to the

cafe, closely followed by team mates Adam Pinder & Shaun Tyson, with Ben

Reynolds not too far down either. A good showing by the Adept lads. First Wheelers home were Toby & Ross (an amazing ride for two youngsters) and

then Andy Curson, who timed his breakaway from “Diesel” Dave & “Van”

Moy to perfection to claim his place in the queue at the cafe ahead of the rush.

Man by man (and woman) the riders all ended up safely back at the cafe, The

Old Chapel Tearooms in Castleton, for food, banter, excuses and their hard-

earned certificates.

Thanks as always to the organiser’s and official Keepers Of The Rolls, Bryan,

Margaret & John. You have to wonder just how many challenge rides Bryan and Margaret have attended in their years as Wheelers, the events really aren’t

complete without them.

A final bit of farce at the end, when the Inept Adept lads couldn’t find the key

to the bike lock (kindly provided by the cafe) and feared a hacksaw was going

to be needed. Thankfully the key was found before any top tubes were vandal-

ised.

Roller Racing

20 riders have appeared at the roller racing up to Christmas. The format is a

series of time trials over a number of distances and the personnel bests of all

the riders are listed below. The first session has been very successful with a number of riders now possessing their own set of rollers. The venue is South-

lands Centre and thanks must go to Middlesbrough Council for letting us have

the use of the room free of charge.

EARLY CYCLING IN CLEVELAND

As our new velodrome hosted its first races this year I had a thought about where it all began and was quite surprised to find that Middlesbrough Cricket

Club first held an amateur sports day in 1878, and spectators included mem-

bers of the town’s establishment. The event included bicycle races.

In 1880 a 6 day was held in a large tent at Feethams in Darlington, the com-

petitors rode for eight hours per day. £30, £20, £14, £7 with £15 shared

amongst the remainder. 1 J BATTENSBY 715 miles 9 laps

Also the same year a six day event was held in a large wooden erection with a

canvas awning on some waste ground at Gilkes Street in Middlesbrough. Ten

laps on a wooden board constituted 1 mile. This event saw the competitors riding 12 hours per day.

The fact that large crowds flocked to these races enabled them to continue for a number of years not only Middlesbrough and Darlington but Stockton too.

Cycling’s increasing popularity was evidenced at the fourth north-eastern

bicycle meet held in Middlesbrough in 1882. More than 260 cyclists from 23

clubs across the region cycled through the town, ending at Gunnergate Hall in Marton

Football and cycling shared common ground when Middlesbrough Ironopolis

FC decided to extend their Paradise Ground in 1891 which included the build-ing of a cycle track. Middlesbrough FC in 1893 decided to proceed

with their new ground and cycle track at Ayresome Park.

In 1885 the North Ormesby Cycling Club held 51 outings, many of which

were road races, and a year later the club held an up-hill race of 700 yards, and

a “very fast” five miles road race for 16 participants.

In 1887 300 spectators gathered to watch the finish of a race of the North

Ormesby club, whilst in 1890 the Northern Echo reported on a race from Middlesbrough to Redcar to decide “the heavy-weight champion of Middles-

brough” (as the joint weight of the two cyclists was more than 30 stones)

Lingdale Cycling Club also had its own cycling track in the late 1800s, it was eventually covered by the shale waste from the ironstone mine
