Last year, two teachers from Cleves Cross, Mrs Atkinson and Mrs Harrison, travelled to Sri Lanka where they spent a week teaching English to pupils, and last week, Ranasinghe and Priyangika came to return the favour. A welcome ceremony was held for the teachers, which was attended by the Mayor of Ferryhill as well as all pupils and staff from Cleves Cross. Ranasinghe and Priyangika enjoyed teaching the children Sri Lankan songs and stories, as well as enjoying English pastimes and home-cooked food each evening! On Friday 14th October, Year 10 Business Studies students from Ferryhill Business & Enterprise College were invited along to the University of Sunderland’s Faculty of Education, where they ran an Enterprise workshop for PGCE Business Education trainee teachers. The workshop involved a presentation by the three pupils, Amy Bolton, Sarah Britton and Kieren Latcham, which was focused on Enterprise in general. They also gave a Power point presenta-tion showing enterprise projects at FBEC, and a presentation from the Year 10 students about their

Enterprise Club and the products they make. The students demon-strated how to make a Halloween gift bag and helped the University student teachers to make one of their own. They then delivered an enterprise lesson from the Retail Park unit of the Year 7 Scheme of work. Kieren Latcham showed a particular flair for teaching, reprimand-ing naughty students by seating them at the front of the class!A spokesperson for the school said, “Not only did the Year 10 students deliver an excellent lesson but they also produced and

presented a PowerPoint slideshow in a very pro-fessional and confident manner. “They demonstrated fantastic enterprise skills and a positive attitude to the work they do at Ferryhill Business & Enterprise College.”The lecturer for the PGCE Business Programme at the University of Sunderland said, “I am very grateful for the contribution of your three student assistants. The confidence and skills that they displayed in presenting to a group of 22 potential teachers impressed everyone. They were outstanding ambas-sadors for your school.”

Students show teachers how its done!

Anyone young or old can enter, all you have to do is write a poem about your local area in the North-East and send it to ‘Local Poem’, United Press Ltd, Admail 3735, London, EC1B 1JB.The best poem will win

£1,000 cash and you can send up to three entries. Poems must be no more than 25 lines containing 160 words each (blank lines count as lines). “It can be about something or someone from the poet’s home area” explained a spokesperson. “We find that poems written from personal ob-servation and experience are the most heartfelt

and expressive, so we’re expecting some great entries from Shildon and other towns in the north-east.”“Last year’s winner was from South Yorkshire and winning poems have been about a river, a tower, a local character, village life and local history.” The closing date for entries is December 31st 2011.

Poetry CornerUntitled

By Geoff Gregg, Tursdale, ex Ferryhill

I still remember it wellThe Sunday School trip to Seaton Carew, The excitement that reached fever pitch

As the sea came into view.

We couldn't wait to get off the bus, Buckets and spades in our hands,

The sea looked so inviting As waves rolled on to the sands.

We hired some tired old deckchairs And if lucky we hired a tent,

Then fast as our legs would carry us, Off to the beach we went.

The sand in our toes felt funny As we ran to have a plodge,

And the water was oh so cold As the waves we tried to dodge.

Then back to our plot for a sandwich And a welcome cup of tea,

As we looked at ships on the horizon, In the sparkling clear blue sea.

We picked shells, and made sandcastles And had such a lot of fun,

We felt so happy and contented In the warm summer sun.

But alas it was all soon over And our day almost complete, We trudged back to the bus

On our weary tired feet.

Next year we'd be back But the memories would linger on,

Of our lovely day at the seaside When the sun always shone.

Local GCSE results The results breakdown is in from Ferryhill Business & Enterprise College after another excellent year for Year 11 students. In a statement to parents, headteacher Mr P. Bowden said, “The ratio of boys to girls for this year group was almost exactly 2:1, so I am extremely pleased that last year’s record results have been maintained for three of the performance indicators, the fourth suffering a slight fall.“Girls’ attainment was broadly in line with national

trends. Within the results were some outstanding individual results from both boys and girls. All results were above prediction. I am delighted that almost

90 per cent of our students gained at least 5 A*-C grades – a fantastic result for our school and the communities it serves. Congratulations to all of our former students.”

Brave Saints finally fallFerryhill Saints’ incredible run came to an end last weekend, going down 3-1 to Hartlepool champions the Hartlepool Throstons in the County Cup. Playing for a place in the last 32, the Saints dominated from start to finish, but were bundled out of the compe-tition by the visitors.Saints started brightly with a great chance falling to Pacman, who could only stab his shot at the keeper with the goal at his mercy. Within five minutes Pacman also saw a 35 yard effort crash back off the crossbar. Hardworking David Tait then drifted past a couple of Hartlepool defenders and forced a smart save from the visiting ‘keeper. Ferryhill enjoyed an early period of dominance, with Martin Reid and Tony

Morgan pulling the strings. On 35 minutes a freekick was awarded to the visitors, after Saints centre-half Richy Gardiner was wrongly judged to have fouled an attacker. To the dismay of the home support, Hartlepool scored direct from the deadball, curling a shot over the wall, totally against the run of play.Regrouping in the break, Saints rallied and got straight back into the game. David Tait got his head on a Paul Robson long throw and found the top corner to level the game. Chances came and went for both sides for the remainder of the half, with pressure building as extra-time loomed. With just 3 minutes to go, a deflected looping ball was gathered by Saints

‘keeper Troy Race, who was promptly barged by a Hartlepool forward causing him to spill the ball. It was swiftly tapped into the net leaving Saints dumbfounded. They pressed and pressed and in the final few seconds won a corner. With everyone on the field up inside the Hartlepool box, the ball broke and the visitors quickly moved the ball upfield and converted an easy chance to make the final score a misleading 3-1 to Hartlepool. After the match Ferryhill manager Lee Jewell and Assistant Dappa said that “The lads couldn’t have given any more!” Man-of-the-match was awarded to Paul Robson. The Saints next game is at home to Pelton.

Celtic progress in County CupFerryhill Celtic progressed to the final 32 of the County Cup last weekend with arguably their finest performance of the season. Drawn against Sunnyside FC at home, they ran out 7-2 winners defeating difficult opponents in emphatic style.Celtic’s early fears were confirmed when Sunnyside took the lead and threatened to go further ahead on a few occasions. Celtic eventually settled and started to play football. This led to the clinical

Lukas Linhart bagging six-minute hat-trick with a masterclass in finishing. Sunnyside managed to pull one back before the half time however, Celtic going in at the break 3-2 up.The second half belonged entirely to Celtic. With Craig Winkworth and Marco Oswald dominating midfield, Celtic played some superb football and really took the game to Sunnyside. A fourth goal was only a matter of time and who else but Lukas Linhart bagged it

with another fine finish. With Neil Bell and John Makepeace controlling the Celtic defence, the home side pushed on and man-of-the-match Johnny Agar marauded forward and grabbed two goals for himself. A certain Mr Linhart wasn’t finished either, grabbing his fifth and Celtic’s seventh goal before full time. All told a superb performance with Stephen Ward particularly impressive. Celtic’s next game is away to Bishop Auckland Bay Horse.
