Health & W ellness Tips:Fighting Afternoon Fatigue

Do you exper i ence f r equen tafternoon tiredness and fatigue?

Are you one of those people who feelenergetic and productive throughoutthe morning hours but you suddenlyfeel deflated as you approach the tasksof the afternoon?

You're not the Lone Ranger. This is avery common problem experienced bypeople who work in an officeenvironment. The most common timefor this to occur is immediately afterlunch and the symptoms can last up toseveral hours, making the second half of the day considerably less productive.

Preventing afternoon fatigue may beimpossible, but here are a few thingsyou can try to reduce the severity of the slump:

Prioritize work. Working on multi-

ple tasks at the same time may notactually save time. Perhaps devotingyourself to one task at a time can bebetter and may mean less revision in thelong run.

Try popping a piece of sugar-free,peppermint gum into your mouth tochew throughout the afternoon. Theminty, fresh flavor will help to keep youawake.

Take a break. You may just need toget up and move around a bit or do somestretches. Or get some fresh air if that'spossible.

Drink enough water. Most peopleswear they're drinking lots of waterduring the day but dehydration is thenumber one reason that people getsleepy throughout the day.

Get adequate sleep. The mostobvious solution for fighting fatigue isgetting enough sleep each night – abouteight hours to be exact. When you go too

many nights in a row with fewer hoursof sleep, your body will feel it. Also, going to bed at the same time eachnight will allow your body to get intoa sleep rhythm.

Breathe. Take three deep andquick in-breaths. Finish with three fullinhalations and three long, slowexhales.

Also, remember to eat healthyfoods. The healthier you are, the lessafternoon fatigue will be a problem foryou. Your body would reward you forhaving proper nutrition.

So don't let the hours after lunch benon-productive ones due to afternoontiredness. Late afternoon fatigue canb e e l i m i n a t e d w i t h s o m eperseverance. Make the necessarychanges to make your afternoon hoursas fruitful as your morning ones.

Janine Laygo

not part of the job. Of course, there arebenefits to doing this because you canfinish your work on time and this will alsoreduce your stress. Plus, you can leaveearlier from the office.

Second, always keep secrets. In ourcompany, the environment is very open.We can easily talk with employees fromother departments or units and even withthe management. A lot of people alsohave multiple tasks so they would haveto be exposed to a lot of informationabout the workings of the company.Everyday, we know what is going on withthe company and with the people aroundus. We hear many things – facts, gossipsand everything else. As with friendship,we don’t share secrets to outsiders or tothe people who are not involved. Thecompany and our colleagues trust us and

for that reason, we should never divulgebusiness-related information to peopleoutside the company.

Third is to be honest at all times. Onelie can ruin your name and even thecompany’s reputation. It would be hardto regain trustworthiness once people

knew that you have lied even if youdid it only once. A little white lie mayalso become a bigger issue. Therefore,we should always tell the truth inevery situation we are in.

Lastly, be reliable. If a task isassigned to us, we should do what wecan to finish it as promised. Samegoes when we got an order from aclient, we should deliver it aspromised. We should always keep ourword to make people trust us. It isalways a two-way process for arelationship to work: we rely onsomeone and so we have to makesure that they can also rely on us.

If we look at all the practicesaforementioned, we would see thatthese are also steps towards

professionalism and excellence whichare also the core values of thecompany. Integrity defines a personbecause with it, everything elsefollows.

This year is a very memorable onefor CL Follosco Group. Since 2011 is acelebration of the anniversary of thegroup’s founding company, let usremember the values that thecompany embraced and advocated, thefirst and most important of which isINTEGRITY. Let me cite four mainpractices of integrity in the workplace:

Firs t , don’t s teal company’sresources. This means that we shouldutilize office supplies and working

hours for activities related to workonly. The office supplies should not bewasted and used for personalpurposes so that even in our little way,we can help lessen company expensesas well as environmental waste. As forthe working hours, avoid doing some-thing else that is not beneficial or is

I ntegrity in the Workplace

going to know whether you didit or not.”
