Ø A Grid use a layer of middleware to communicate with andmanipulate heterogeneous hardware and data sets.
Ø A Grid coordinate scientific instruments in one country with adatabase in another and processors in a third but for user sperspective these resources function as a single system
Ø One of the first commonly known grid initiatives was theSearch for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI). It is used toanalyze radio telescope data.
Ø Tele science project provides remote access to an extremelyPowerful electron microscope at National Center for Microscopyand Imaging Research in San Diego

Ø The Dept. of Information Technology (DIT) has funded theC-DAC to deploy the nation-wide computational grid “GARUDA”
Ø It is in its Proof Of Concept (POC) with an aim to bring
“Grid” networked computing to research labs and industry
Ø GARUDA aims at strengthening and advancing scientific and
technological excellence in the area of Grid technology
Ø To achieve its objective, GARUDA brings together a critical
mass of well-established researchers, from 33 research and
academic institutions, 11 C-DAC centers, and ERNET,DelhiJigar Raval, CC,PRL

GARUDA NETWORK
v It is a Layer 2/3 MPLS Virtual Private Network connecting selectinstitutions at 10/100 Mbps speed
v Access to the GARUDA network and resources is through a gridportal managed by C-DAC
v It allows submissions of both sequential and parallel job and alsoprovides job accounting facilities.
v The deployment of Grid Tools and services for GARUDA isbased on mix of in-house developed components, Globus Toolkitand industry grade components.

Globus Toolkit
v It is an open source software toolkit used for building grid systemsand applications
v It is being developed by Globus Alliance and many others all over theworld
v Grid Software components/tools for grid services:
Security Monitoring and Discovery ComputationData
v The Sourthern California Earthquake Center uses Globus Softwareto visualize earthquake simulation data. It generates 40TB data persimulation run

GARUDA ACCESS FROM PRL
v PRL is connected with GARUDA network over 100 Mbps link speed
v Currently five Linux machines in computer center are installed andconfigured to provide access of GARUDA network and computationalresources. These machines are NOT connected to PRL LAN.
v Individual must get an account (certificate) from C-DAC by filling uponline application form. Click

Grid GARUDA Application Communities
v Raman Research Institute is exploring the possibility of using GARUDAfor variety of simulations as well as processing large volumes of dataacquired from GMRT. In particular, the following simulation studiesare being considered in the context of GARUDA
• Understanding the process of reionization of the Universal throughsimulations conforming to modern cosmological models
• Simulation of the response of Scanning Sky Monitor planned to beequipped on the ASTROSAT, India’s first fully dedicated astronomysatellite scheduled to be launched in 2008.
