page 1. As teammates (2), taking turns with one teammate, the coach, answering a question and

then leading the discussion as to the appropriateness and completeness of the response until it is

the next partner's chance to be coach. Every partner with record response within Notability.

Responses do NOT have to be in complete-sentence format given you are recording your

response immediately below the question.

2) In class: On a sheet of loose-leaf/binder paper, complete Chapter 2, Section 2: Peoples of

North America by reading pp. 36-41 and then answering, on p. 41, question 5: What [political]

power did Iroquois women have? (Iroquois women had the political power of...)

How?

1) Read question 5, on page 41, for direction/purpose in reading. (So you know what academic

reason you are reading.)

Page 4: Click here to Jump to Current Expectations€¦ · Grade 7 Expectations Click here to Jump to Current Expectations Things to Remember District Calendar 2017-2018 Town of Holland:

2) Read pp. 36-41 for understanding and answer question 5: What [political] power did Iroquois

) Analyze the map on p. 38, Native American Cultures. Then analyze the map on page

24, Physical Regions of the United States.

With a partner or partners, cooperatively discuss the questions below:

1) Are there noted/recognized similarities between the two maps? Coach partner: Explain to

partner one similarity, discuss, and then switch roles and have the other partner(s) do the same.

(The first coach partner to explain is the one who is shortest. And rotate counterclockwise.)

You each may refer back to your reading of Chapter 2, Section 2 (pp. 36-41): Peoples of North

America, for assistance.

2) Together, as a team, analyze the picture on the top of page 41. If the picture's caption did

NOT tell us that the picture was of Indians/Native Americans of the Eastern Woodlands, what

information within the picture might we be able to analyze that might lean us towards that

understanding--that are Eastern Woodland Indians?

First, all partners INDIVIDUALLY analyze and then makes a list of the information to compare.

Secondly, after all partners are done making list, compare lists, eliminate items that the all

partners have, and then discuss any unique information that each partner had and how that

partner's analysis drew him/her to that understanding.

Teachable moment from Period 3: $50 a day. $250 a week. $2,500 a 10-week marking

period. $10,000 a school year. $60,000 for six school years (7-12): How to mathematically

break down how a $60,000, academic scholarship was achieved during your secondary-

education experience. (And, you'd have your favorite teacher to thank, YOU!

Thursday, September 21, 2017: From yesterday's p. 41, picture analysis,

compare partners' lists, eliminate items that the all partners have, and then discuss any unique

information that each partner had and how that partner's analysis drew him/her to that

understanding.

American Culture is constantly changing; identifiable by the life cycle of trending fads--silly

bands, spinners. And what else??? (identify a fad that has ended; at least until it becomes retro

(retrospective) and is re-popularized.)

With partner(s), try to come up with a previously-studied, world civilization/society that you

learned about last year that you can identify two (2) things:

1.) How the identified world civilization/society adapted to their environment/physical location?

2.) What natural, physical feature(s) caused these adaptations to be necessary in order to survive

there?

Page 6: Click here to Jump to Current Expectations€¦ · Grade 7 Expectations Click here to Jump to Current Expectations Things to Remember District Calendar 2017-2018 Town of Holland:

For better understanding: If I told you a Texan (person from the state of Texas) was come to

class today, visualize a Texan, and then describe how they would look. What if the person was

coming from Paris, France instead? What kind of dog would the Parisian most likely have? Or,

someone from Hawaii? What kind of shirt would the person be wearing? If the person said

he/she skied for fun, do you think it would down-hill, cross-country, or some other sort of

skiing? Explain?

We will discuss stereotyping, repeated, predetermined beliefs without variation; to over

generalize, to apply some characteristic of a sample to all members of the group. (Do you think

any Texan owns a poodle? What about a person from Paris, Texas?? All polar bears enjoy Coca

Cola. Do we stereotype cartoon polar bears? Do some polar bears probably prefer Pepsi more?

(Just watch out for the ones that drink Mountain Dew! They're too radical!)

Aid: Suggested previously-studied, world civilization/society: Ancient Egyptians, Ancient

Greeks, Etruscans/Ancient Romans, or peoples who live in Mesopotamia, Ancient India, or

Ancient China.

Example for Discussion: The Inuit (Eskimo/Native Americans of the Far North cultural region)

built temporary dwelling out the only available resource, ice--the igloo. And, because they had

limited fuel (oil from animal fat--no trees, so no wood), thus they were known for eating meat

raw, or uncooked. Eskimos, or "eaters of raw meat" in the Algonquian languages, adapted to

resources within their environment for survival.

HOMEWORK:

1) Identify a previously-studied, world civilization that you learned about last year (Ancient

Egyptians, Ancient Greeks, Etruscans/Ancient Romans, the peoples who live in Mesopotamia,

Ancient India, Ancient China or other civilization) that adapted to their environment/physical

location.

2) How that civilization adapted?

3) What was the natural, physical feature(s) that caused these adaptations to be necessary in

order to survive there?

Friday, September 22, 2017: Finish up studied-world-cultures-that-adapted-to-physical-

features discussion.

For students in 5th-period class (and others): History of paper: Before wood pulp, paper

was made from rags. Papermaking began in Egypt (papyrus) c.3000 B.C.E. In 105 C.E. Cai

Lun, a Chinese inventor, invented modern papermaking using rags, cotton, and other plant fibers

by pulping it.

Page 7: Click here to Jump to Current Expectations€¦ · Grade 7 Expectations Click here to Jump to Current Expectations Things to Remember District Calendar 2017-2018 Town of Holland:

Parchment is a writing material made from specially prepared untanned skins of animals—

primarily sheep, calves, and goats. Parchment has been used as a writing medium for over two

millennia. Vellum is a finer quality parchment made from the skins of young animals such as

lambs and young calves.

The Declaration of Independence and the US Constitution were written on parchment. Some

working drafts of the documents might have been composed on paper made from hemp (plant

fibers), which was widely used in that time period.

Now that we understand adaptation, we are going to prepare to complete an extended-writing

assignment by:

1) analyzing a culture (from the past or from somewhere else today);

2) contrasting that culture to your current culture, or way of life, by thinking about and then

noting/recording similarities and differences; and then

3) writing a properly-organized paragraph, with:

an introductory sentence that clearly identifies the topic,

body sentences that supports the topic through the use of details, examples, and/or other

evidence, and,

finally, a conclusion sentence that bring an end to the discussion by re-stating the topic and

without providing any new supports. (All supports should be in the body sentences.)

Remember, the paragraph's topic (your claim) is that another culture has both similarities as

well as differences from your current culture or way of life. (Hawaiians live different lives

than their great ancestors did due to technological advancements. But Hawaiians also live

different lives than you due to a different geographic location with different geographical factors

and resources.)

We discussed how various cultures adapted to different environments with different resources

due to natural/geographical features (such as weather patterns/climates, location to or great

distance from water sources, and the availability to or the lack of certain resources) as well as

contact with other neighboring cultures that shared ideas, beliefs, and technological advances--

that sharing between cultures is called cultural diffusion .

Help to Better Understand: 1) Longhouses were made of wood from the abundant trees,

while igloos were made of ice and snow due to the lack of any wood as a resources. Both were

dwellings (need for shelter exists--similarity), yet each dwelling was made from different

resources. 2) Ancient Romans came into contact with Ancient Greeks and took the Greek's gods

(same gods, similarity), but then the Romans gave the gods Roman names (difference). Same

gods, but different name dependent upon on who was referring to them.

Greek Name Roman Name Description

Zeus Jupiter King of Gods

Hera Juno Goddess of Marriage

Poseidon Neptune God of the Sea

Cronos Saturn Youngest son of Uranus, Father of Zeus

Aphrodite Venus Goddess of Love

Hades Pluto God of the Underworld

Hephaistos Vulcan God of the Forge

Demeter Ceres Goddess of the Harvest

Apollo Apollo God of Music and Medicine

Athena Minerva Goddess of Wisdom

Artemis Diana Goddess of the Hunt

Ares Mars God of War

Hermes Mercury Messenger of the Gods

Dionysus Bacchus God of Wine

the questions. After your first choice, you will be offered a second chance. The second chance

also will provide you with a hint and other information to help you correctly answer the question.

Your in-class grade will be two part: based on your correct responses and your ability to

successfully work with a partner.

Thursday, September 28, 2017: Complete SS7/SS8 Test Assignment with partner. Now,

INDIVIDUALLY complete SS7/SS8 Test Assignment (Retake)--hopefully you learned with

Friday, September 29, 2017: With a cooperative teammate, finish SS7 Geography of New York

State.

Monday, October 02, 2017: Watch videos clips on European exploration--Around Africa;

Columbus; "Amerigo". After viewing, (so just make mental notes while viewing, but we aware

of three meaningful parts that you found 1) interesting, 2) "new" to you, and/or 3) confusing.)

you will have to share these with a teammate and discuss.

It will be your teammate that with have to share your meaningful parts, so make sure you

do a good job. (Remember, we always want a positive, respectful, and mutually-beneficial

experience to occur when in teams.)

Mutualism: the doctrine that mutual dependence is necessary to social well-being—

symbiosis that is beneficial to both organisms involved. One example of a mutualistic

relationship is that of the oxpecker (a kind of bird) and the rhinoceros or zebras. More Animal

partnerships. See if you and your teammate(s) are included!

The oxpecker's diet consists of ticks and flies that

feed on their hosts (rhinoceros/zebras) as well as a variety of other insects. The adult then

brings back a beak full of food to feed to their young. To quote Yo Gabba Gabba, "yummy in

my tummy." (Rock on!)

Tuesday, October 03, 2017: Finish watching videos clips on European exploration--Around

Africa; Columbus; "Amerigo". After viewing, (so just make mental notes while viewing, but we

aware of three meaningful parts that you found 1) interesting, 2) "new" to you, and/or 3)

confusing.) you will have to share these with a teammate and discuss.

Wednesday, October 04, 2017: Watch and discuss video clips on the consequences of European

exploration. After viewing, (so just make mental notes while viewing, but we aware of two

meaningful parts that you found 1) interesting, 2) "new" to you, and/or 3) confusing.) you will

have to share these with a teammate and discuss.

Class Discussion: As we saw yesterday, Ferdinand Magellan’s expedition

circumnavigated around the world. How do you think knowing that the world is now finite

(limited) and that it won't go on forever (no more "new" lands to grab resources from or "new"

markets to trade with) affected the competition between European nations? Download into

Notability on your iPad, Limitless Pizza.

With 3-4 teammates, cooperatively read, discuss, and complete Limitless Pizza. Record

response within Notability.

Thursday, October 05, 2017: No School.

Friday, October 06, 2017: Watch and discuss video clips on the consequences of European

exploration--The Columbian/Grand Exchange. Continued: With 3-4 teammates, cooperatively

read, discuss, and complete Limitless Pizza. Record response within Notability.

Monday, October 09, 2017: No school.

Tuesday, October 10, 2017: Reflect on Limitless Pizza and competition--in history, today, and projected in the

future. Realize you each are a competitor and you will have to be a competitor for ever.

Economic principle: Resources are always limited--based on availability and/or cost of

acquiring. Scientists can make gold, but it financially cost more than just buying gold in the

marketplace, so we don't. Costs of making gold are cost-prohibitive; not a scientific barrier, but

a financial one.

Now share with your teammate as an explorer into the world of the unknown called the future,

responses to these questions:

1) Where are you hoping to explore in life? (What is your ultimate destination.),

2) What you will need to have learned and what will you need to take with you on this

expedition in order to reach your goal?, and

3) Do you think you will have to compete with other who also want to reach that same ultimate

destination? (How are you preparing to win--knowledge, skills, improved talents? Are you

going to be marketable? More marketable than your peers? What makes you think so?)

Page 13: Click here to Jump to Current Expectations€¦ · Grade 7 Expectations Click here to Jump to Current Expectations Things to Remember District Calendar 2017-2018 Town of Holland:

Remember from class discussions, as you "explore your way through life". Here are some

proverbs to reflect on:

The longest journey begins with a single step. (If you don't start, you will never finish.)

How do you (figuratively) eat an elephant? One bite at a time. (No matter how huge a task is, if

you keep whittling away at it until it is done, you will accomplish your goal. Break a task into

smaller "consumable" pieces.

I prefer pizza-based philosophy: How do you eat a sheet pizza? One slice at a time.

Don't touch that. You don't know where it has been. (There is safety in knowledge.)

Once teamwork has finished, as an individual, analysis the editorial cartoons and prepare to

comment on if the cartoon has any connection to our discussion of the European after Magellan's

expedition circumnavigated the world?

Wednesday, October 11, 2017: Together, in class, I will read Chapter 4, Section 3: English

direction; know the objective, reason for reading for reading BEFORE you start. On page 93, we

find the first objective: List three problems the Jamestown colonists faced. Objective: Identify

what the three problems that the Jamestown colonist faced were?

To prompt yourself, re-phrase the question into to an incomplete statement on your

paper: The three (3) problems that the Jamestown colonists faced were...(to then be completed

from the reading--the source of information.

Once you find the information and appropriately complete the statement to answer the

question/objective, you should consider including the page or pages from where the information

was found in order to get in the habit of documenting the source of information.

French and Indian War: French: Treaty of Paris, 1763 ...Indians: Proclamation of 1763*

*:The British did NOT want to keep fighting with the Indians (Pontiac's War) while France was

rebuilding its military might/capacity.

*:The American colonists did NOT want the losing Indians to be rewarded with the lands west

of the Appalachian Mountains that the colonist believed they helped win for Britain and should

be awarded. And, the colonists certainty did NOT want to have to pay taxes to Britain for the

Red Coats that were preventing colonist from moving westward over the Appalachian

Shot Heard 'Round the World (The American Revolution)

The Shot Heard 'Round The World (Schoolhouse Rock)

"The British are coming! The British are coming!" [More likely the "Regulars are

Coming!", referring to the British Redcoats]

Now, the ride of Paul Revere [the guy who did the Boston Massacre engraving]

Set the nation on its ear,

And the shot at Lexington heard

'round the world,

When the British fired in the early dawn

The War of Independence had begun, [As later determined by historians as they put cause

and effect into consideration]

The die was cast, the rebel flag unfurled.

And on to Concord marched the foe

To seize the arsenal there you know,

Waking folks and searching all around

Till our militia stopped them in their tracks,

At the old North Bridge we turned them back

And chased those redcoats back to Boston town.

And the shot heard 'round the world

Page 37: Click here to Jump to Current Expectations€¦ · Grade 7 Expectations Click here to Jump to Current Expectations Things to Remember District Calendar 2017-2018 Town of Holland:

Was the start of the Revolution.

The Minute Men were ready, on the move.

Take your powder, and take your gun. [And don't forget the cannons taken by Ethan Allen

and the Green Mountian (VT.) Boys from Fort Ticonderoga]

Report to General Washington. [leader of the U.S. Continental Army]

Hurry men, there's not an hour to lose!

Now, at famous Bunker Hill,

Even thought we lost, it was quite a thrill,

The rebel Colonel Prescott proved he was wise;

Outnumbered and low on ammunition

[under mercantialism, Americancolonists were NOT to be self-sufficient/independent]

As the British stormed his position

He said, "Hold your fire till you see the whites of their eyes!"

Though the next few years were rough,

General Washington's men proved they were tough,

Those hungry, ragged boys would not be beat.

One night they crossed the Delaware, [motivating/inspiring Battle of Trenton]

Surprised the Hessians in their lair, [Gremanic mercenaries--payed-to-fight soldiers, and

fought not for a belief or cause]

And at Valley Forge they just bundled up their feet! [Tough winter outside of

Philadelphia, Pennsylavania where the Continental Army would be trained by Steuben]

Now the shot heard 'round the world

Page 38: Click here to Jump to Current Expectations€¦ · Grade 7 Expectations Click here to Jump to Current Expectations Things to Remember District Calendar 2017-2018 Town of Holland:

Was the start of the Revolution.

The Minute Men were ready, on the move.

Take your blanket, and take your son.

Report to General Washington.

We've got our rights and now it's time to prove.

Well, they showed such determination

That they won the admiration [After winning the Battle of Saratoga in upstate NY]

Of countries across the sea like France and Spain,

Who loaned the colonies ships and guns [The French fleet would be very vital, especially

at Yorktown]

And put the British on the run

And the Continental Army on its feet again.

And though they lost some battles too,

The Americans swore they'd see it through,

Their raiding parties kept up, hit and run. [Francis Marion--the Swamp Fox]

At Yorktown the British could not retreat,

Bottled up by Washington and the French Fleet,

Cornwallis surrendered and finally we had won! [Battle of Yorktown leds to the Treaty

of Paris, 1783]
