Step 1 - Introducing the Paul Klee Slideshow Guide BEGIN READING HERE

MOTIVATION Would you like to learn how to play a musical instrument? Which instrument would you like to learn? (TAKE SEVERAL RESPONSES) Today’s artist was also an excellent musician. He started playing when he was only seven years old. Can you guess what instrument he played? Let’s listen to some music by his favorite composer, Mozart. Listen carefully to hear that instrument. If you recognize the instrument, pretend to play it while the music plays.

Can you tell what instrument we heard? (VIOLIN) Yes, he was a violin player. His name is Paul Klee, and he was surrounded by music as a child. His father was a music teacher, and his mother was a singer. Klee loved music, but he also enjoyed art as a child. His grandmother gave him a box of colored chalk. She would read him fairy tales and have him draw pictures of the stories with chalk. Do you have a favorite fairy tale story that you would like to draw? When he grew up he chose to become an artist for his job, but he always loved music.

DEVELOPMENT

1. EYE OF BEETHOVEN NOTEBOOK Paul Klee was a very good student in school. On this math homework page, he drew this funny looking man and, above, another famous music composer, Beethoven. Do you think his teacher liked seeing these drawings? Can you recognize what signs are right below Beethoven’s face? (MUSICAL NOTES) Yes, they are musical notes. When learning how to play an instrument, you learn to read music just like you learn to read words in a book. These four musical notes written by Beethoven are very famous. You will hear them in Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony. Listen for “da, da, da, DAH” at the beginning and repeated a few times. I will signal with my hand each time those notes are played. 2. PHOTO OF ARTIST IN STUDIO This is Klee sitting in his studio after a long day of painting. Does it look like he is resting? (YES) Klee was always busy painting and often worked on more than one picture at a time. How many paintings do you count on the easels behind him? (FOUR) Can you guess which of these paintings I’m going to show next?


3. SENECIO, HEAD OF A MAN Did you guess this one? What do we call the people who wear funny costumes at the circus and make us laugh? (CLOWNS) Klee loved circus clowns and painted them a lot. Does the face look realistic, like a real clown? (NO) Klee painted in his own special way. He didn’t need to make the face look real, like in a photograph. How did he make his face look different? (VERY ROUND SHAPE, EYES DON’T MATCH, TRIANGLE EYEBROW, SQUARE SHAPES PAINTED ON FACE) This kind of art is called ABSTRACT, because it doesn’t look like the real thing. Do you notice that his eyebrows don’t match? Klee painted the dark eyebrow on the right like an arrow pointing our eyes in a circle around the face (INDICATE CLOCKWISE AROUND THE FACE). Klee liked to show MOVEMENT in his paintings by getting our eyes to travel as we look at the painting. He would use lines, shapes and colors to help our eyes move. When Klee grew up he married Lily, a music teacher. Can you guess what musical instrument she played? Guess while I make believe I’m playing her instrument. (PANTOMIME PLAYING PIANO) You are right; she was a very good piano player. They had a son named Felix. Let’s look at Klee’s painting of their child.


4. PORTRAIT OF FELIX What colors did Klee use? (BLACK AND WHITE) He used VALUES of black and white. VALUE in art means using light and dark of the same color, different shades of the same color. What is the darkest color value in this painting? (BLACK) What is the lightest color



value? (WHITE) Klee painted this with WATERCOLOR. What did he use to get the color black lighter and lighter? (WATER) That’s right; when painting with watercolor, you add more water to get different values like these different shades of gray. Klee’s wife worked outside of the house as a piano teacher while he stayed at home painting and taking care of Felix. While the baby was napping, Klee would paint in the kitchen of their small home. He would also do all the cleaning and cooking. The next painting shows us one of his favorite dishes that he cooked.

Click Next To Change Slide 5. AROUND THE FISH Do you like to eat fish? (YES/NO) Klee liked to fish in his spare time and would cook the fish he caught. Klee called this Around the Fish, because he wants our eyes to travel in a circle around the fish on the blue plate. Can you guess where he wanted our eyes to start traveling after looking at the fish? (AT THE ARROW) Klee liked using arrows to point the way. (INDICATE COUNTER-CLOCKWISE AROUND THE FISH) Can you name some of the things around the fish? (TAKE SEVERAL ANSWERS) Klee painted from his imagination, so we might not be able to recognize everything he painted. Would you like to see a magical forest full of topsy-turvy birds?


6. LANDSCAPE WITH YELLOW BIRDS What do you think Klee wanted you to notice first? (BIRDS) Yes, that’s why he painted them in bright yellow. He put them in a circle, so our eyes will make the trip around the forest. Can you see some birds that look a little funny? (UPSIDE DOWN BIRD, BIRD ON RIGHT SIDE WITH OTHER HALF IN MIDDLE) Now let’s take a look at a tree house that we might find in this magical forest.


7. TREE OF HOUSES Wouldn’t it be fun to play in this tree house? Let’s have our eyes take a walk up this big tree by joining the child at the bottom ready to climb the ladder. Where do you want to stop on the way up the tree? (SEVERAL RESPONSES) Now that we are already up at the top, how does Klee get our eyes to move down again? (BIRD POINTING DOWN) Yes, the bird is like another one of his favorite arrows giving us MOVEMENT back down to the bottom.



Klee was always trying new ways of painting. In Tree of Houses, he glued two pieces of fabric to a board, leaving a border all around. He liked the TEXTURE and rough feel of the fabric. He didn’t want it to be perfectly smooth. If you look closely, you can see the fabric in the background. TEXTURE is how something feels and looks. Can you name something in this room that might have a rough or smooth texture? (SEVERAL RESPONSES) In a painting, we have to feel the TEXTURE with our eyes since we can’t feel it with our hands.


8. HEROIC STROKES OF THE BOW Are you ready to be a musician again? Can you remember the instrument that Klee learned to play as a child? (VIOLIN) How do you make music with a violin? (SHOW ME.) Klee showed us how to play a violin in this painting. But he doesn’t paint a person playing the violin. He was an ABSTRACT artist so how did he show us? (BLACK LINE GOING BACK AND FORTH) Yes, he painted the MOVEMENT of the bow going back and forth across the violin strings. Now let’s “play” our violins in time to the music.

You were an excellent violin player! But our musical playing is not over yet! We’re moving to another part of the orchestra.

9. KETTLEDRUMMER In the back of orchestras sit the drum players. Sometimes they have to raise their drumsticks way above their heads before hitting the drum to make a really loud noise. That is what this person is doing in Klee’s painting. His arm and drum stick have become one line. Would you like to be a drummer now? Listen carefully to the music, and follow along with me as we “play” our drums like Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture.

an abstract fish.

MATERIALS FOR INSTRUCTOR AND STUDENTS One 9” x 12” light blue construction paper Paper Towel Artist Profile Slip Black crayons 9” Paper plates 3 dabs (size of nickels) of tempera paint - magenta, yellow, turquoise Watercolor paintbrushes (rounded and soft) Water cups Water pitcher (for instructor only) Pencil

PREPARATION Display the Klee print in front of the room. Tape your 9” x 12” light blue paper to the board, horizontally. Have black crayon, prepared paper plate palette with the three tempera colors, paintbrush and water cup close by. SET-UP [ 5 minutes ] Distribute the materials: SUPPLIES: [3] Black crayon, paintbrush, and water cup PAPER: [3] One 9” x 12” light blue construction paper, paper towel, and artist profile slip Teacher needs to help with: Preparing and distributing paint PALETTES, Distributing and pouring WATER when needed ORIENTATION [ 5 minutes ]


Our master artist Paul Klee came from what country? (SWITZERLAND) Are his paintings realistic or abstract? (ABSTRACT) What do we mean when we say Klee’s art is abstract? (DOES NOT LOOK REAL) What kinds of things did Klee like to paint? (FISH, MUSIC) Klee’s work has lots of movement. How does he make our eyes move around his paintings? (WITH LINES, COLORS, TEXTURES, AND SHAPES) Let’s get ready to draw and paint an abstract painting with movement just like Paul Klee.

DEMONSTRATION AND ACTIVITY Have the students repeat each step immediately with their materials:

ORGANIZE YOUR WORK AREA [ 3 minutes ] With your pencil print your name on the back of your light blue 9” x 12” paper. Arrange it horizontally on your desk (demonstrate). Put your brush and water cup on your paper towel in the upper corner of your desk. Put your black crayon, pencil, and artist profile slip in the other corner. CREATING YOUR ABSTRACT FISH DESIGN [10 minutes] (Demonstrate with black crayon for visibility.) 1.Using black crayons, have the students draw a dot halfway between the top and bottom and two fingers in from the left side of the paper. 2.Draw a large, curving line from the dot to the top corner of the paper. Draw a second large, curving line from the left edge through the dot to the bottom corner of the paper, forming a fish shape.

3.Add a vertical, straight or wavy line about two fingers in from the right side to form a tail on your fish. 4.Draw a vertical, curving line that starts about a hand’s width from the top left corner and ends about a hand’s width from the bottom left corner, forming a head to the fish. Draw a horizontal line through the body of the fish, and add an interesting side fin connecting these two lines. 5.Add the opposite line to #4 without going through the fish. Add a large, creative top fin and a small, interesting bottom fin to your fish. Add an eye to the head of your fish.

Fill at least two sections of your fish with different patterns to add texture and movement. Refer to the Art Packet for pattern and texture ideas. Now you have an abstract fish design!



ADDING COLOR WITH WATERCOLOR WASH [ 20 minutes ] Review color mixing by having each student mix a small spot of each secondary color on his or her palette. Take lightest color first (yellow + magenta = orange, yellow + turquoise = green, turquoise + magenta = violet). Demonstrate the use of lots of water and a soft brush to gently wash in one color to each defined shape. Apply water to one shape at a time. Mix a color on the palette, dip brush in water, and then apply to the shape. Encourage warm colors for the fish, and cool colors for the background to create contrast and make the fish stand out. Remember how warm colors next to cool colors made our eyes move in our Art Packets? Let’s make our fish move! The black crayon defines the shapes and resists the paint. Stress painting light shapes first to dark shapes last, so that the palette and paints stay clean. Mix a little paint at a time and apply with lots of water. Students may leave some areas unpainted. Students continue until they have a very colorful composition. MOUNTING THE ARTIST PROFILE SLIP [ 2 minutes ] (Profile slips for each artist are provided. They give a brief description of the artist, the technique, and the media used in the art activity. They should be mounted on the back of each art project after it is completed.) Write your name on the front of the artist profile slip. Using glue, mount the profile slip on the back of your artwork. Encourage students to discuss their artwork at home using this artist slip of information.




CONCLUSION Paul Klee was a master at using texture, line, and color. Now let’s see your beautiful paintings. Wiggle your fish gently like he’s lazily swimming, if: Your fish has texture. Your fish is colorful. Your fish is abstract. Excellent! Please let your fish rest on your desk now.
