Humble Beginnings From a young age Kolohe Kai founder and front man, Roman De Peralta has always know where his passions lie. “[I] always want[ed] to play music with my dad and uncles in the backyard, I started singing young,” said Roman.Roman would jam with his family as a kid and started to play instruments. “My dad [taught] me how to play guitar and I really appreciated his patience to help me,” Even his song writing career started in his youth. “Music was what I was always surrounded with and at 14, I started writing songs,” Roman said. After moving to Kaneohe in his teen years Roman got involved in Castle High School’s (the school he was attending) Ploy Music program. From there with the help of teacher Dawn Cone he started band Kolohe Kai and hasn’t stop loving music.

Roman has always had the support of his parents from the beginning. From listening to his songs, to advice, and even driving the band around in their younger years before anyone could drive.

They’ve been there for me through the disappointments and celebrat-ing with me throughout the triumphs, I owe everything to my ohana. They have been there through thick and thin and if

it wasn't for them I would have never suc-ceeded.” he says. Along with his parents his High School teacher Mrs. Dawn Cone also helped shape his career. “Mrs.Cone helped coach me to write songs and sing from my heart.” he says “She is my musical mom. I love her dearly.”

Kolohe Kai had their first radio hit in 2010. De Peralta was still a senior who felt as if he we’re dreaming, when the

success of his band was very real. “Graduating high school one week and go-ing to the Na Hoku Hanohano awards for two nominations the next week was fun.” De Peralta never let the fame go to his head. He knew that they’re were and still are many fans who look up to him.“The experience humbled me and made me realize the responsibility that I had to be a good example.”

Ocean Influences As well as being an artist Roman is also a surfer, fisher, and diver and says “My music has always been inspired by the ocean.”Roman caught his first wave at the age of five but really got into the sport in his teen years. “I started living in Kauai on school breaks during that time and my backyard was this

super sick spot called, “Pakalas.” The islands of Hawaii has always given Roman a sense of freedom within its beauty. A place to help ease his mind and get his creative juices flowing. But his heart has always loved the ocean the most. “The ocean, I especially love the most, because of all the joyful memories I have had playing in the water and surfing as a kid. The ocean soothes me like the way my new song He'e Roa explains.” Not only does it influence his songs but also the name of his band.“Kolohe Kai means rascal waters in Hawaiian. Kolohe Kai means much more than a band to me, it's a lifestyle of playing and being a rascal in the ocean. My music has always been inspired by the ocean.”

“Surfing back into the limelight” In August 2011 Roman an-

nounced to New Zealand media (while on tour) that the band was going to take a break. For the next two years years Roman spent the time doing something else that he is very enthusiastic about. Traveling and spreading gods word. “I took a break and spent volunteer time helping teach the bible as one of Jehovah's Witnesses to many people,” he shares “Mostly in Hawaii and also when I vaca-tioned in Costa rica and Israel. I love that work the most. It is so rewarding.” While traveling to many places including Tahiti, Roman couldn’t help but be inspired. In 2013, Roman announced that he was going to put out a solo album. What started out as a solo project became a Kolohe Kai’s 3rd album. Roman realized his true identity would always be “a rascal in the water.”Roman says,

“I feel I need to be true to [me] and to the fans. All the people I have sang to and wrote songs for since I was 17 know me from one name, Kolohe Kai. I want to make this fun new album easy for people to find.” Kolohe Kai’s 3rd album “Para-dise” was released in march features 10 songs all personally composed by the front man. As Roman has grows, so does his music. “The music has gotten deeper in writing and developed a more reggae and pop vibe… The music and writing has matured a little from my previous albums, but noth-ing can take away that rascal personality that sneaks into my lyrics.”So Roman, with the help of some of the original members as well as new ones, got the band back together. They are all happy to be performing together once again.

Clear Waters Ahead With the band back together Ro-man and crew have a lot planned for their fans all over the world, who have been patiently waiting for their return. Including comeback shows in New Zealand starting in May and touring the west coast (Amer-ica) for the very first time. "We also are excited for our Cd release party in Hawaii on May 30th at the The Republik,” As for the future Roman has many things he would like to do. “I plan to continue putting out original albums and collaborating with various dif-ferent artist. I also continue my volunteer work now and plan to go and preach in another country again soon.” Roman knows that he has many fans around the world that look up to him and does his best to be someone worth admiring. “Seeing that a lot of kids would look up to me, put me in my place and made me realize what privilege I had to in-fluence the keiki of Hawaii for the better.” he says. Roman knows what kind of effect a role model can have on their fans. When he was 14 years old Fiji and Ekolu gave him advice that he passes onto his fans. “"Stay humble no matter what success you receive" and "Keep Jamming" no matter what disappointments come your way." ” he shares. Their advice helped him a lot in his life and his career. Especially when the music business discouraged him showing that not everything in the business was in-nocent and fun. But, he learned to focus on better things. “I love the purity of music and stick to those standards,” he says. His elders also played a part in keeping him grounded and reminds fans to “Respect your parents and teachers and re-member that they know more than you and they will help you succeed if you listen.”

Celebrating its most memorable year yet, OluKai brought together world class athletes, Hawaii’s top musical artists, community, key retailers and some of the most heartfelt moments, to its 6th annual Ho’olaule’a on May 11-12 in Maui, Hawaii. Event participants and festival goers gathered Saturday and Sunday for what has become one of the most celebrated festi-vals, elite standup paddle (SUP) and outrig-ger canoe 1 man/2 man (OC1 & OC2) competitions in the world. With numer-ous inspirational and emotional moments throughout the event, including the human spirit-defining 4+ hour SUP paddle by Navy Seal veteran Kimo Akaka, the event featured canoe sailing, ancient Hawaiian games, luau, hula dancers and a 3 mile fun paddle. OluKai’s Giveback Day with Maui Cultural Lands on Monday gave OluKai a chance to give back to the community and pay homage to the land. Competing for equal gender prize money of $15,000, SUP and OC1/OC2, 434 racers traveled from 9 countries and

throughout the U.S. to compete in the Ma-liko Downwind run, one of the most pres-tigious SUP races in the world which spans 8 miles of infamous open ocean. The top 3 winners in men’s SUP included Connor Baxter taking 1st place for the second year in a row and Travis Grant and Jeremy Rigs taking 2nd and 3rd respectively. “Really stoked to be here at such a big event on Maui in my backyard, I train on this run ev-ery single day which definitely helped me,” stated Connor Baxter. Taking 1st place in women’s SUP was Andrea Moller for her unrivaled 6 time win, followed by Sonni Honscheild in 2nd and Talia Gangini De-coite in 3rd. “Anytime that an event gives equal recognition to both men and women, it makes the sport grow bigger. What Olu-Kai does with the Ho’olaule’a really helps the sport worldwide,” said Andrea Moller. For more information and full results of the SUP race, go to http://pseresults.com/events/602/results.In men’s OC1/OC2, Keakua Kaawa Nolan finished 1st, Kaihe Chong 2nd, and Daniel Chun in 3rd. The top 3 in the women’s OC1/OC2 race were Lauren Spalding in 1st for her second year in a row, Andrea Moller in 2nd and Rachel Bruntsh in 3rd. “I was thinking as I paddled that second place wasn’t so bad, but I put away the sheep and brought out the tiger,” said Lauren Spalding, as she clenched the title in the OC1 women’s elite. For more informa-tion on the OC1/OC2 races, go to http://pseresults.com/events/603/results.Following the luau and award ceremony, OluKai presented a concert Saturday fea-turing a full band performance by Anuhea, Mishka, and solo recording artist Paula Fuga, all longtime OluKai supporters.

One of the most notable moments during the event took place as Navy Seal veteran and extraordinary human being, Kimo Akaka made his decision to paddle the SUP race, a race that takes most an hour and a half on average, took Kimo 4+ strenuous hours. Kimo’s method of pad-dling is much different than others. A Navy Seal veteran for 17 years, Kimo suffered a stroke in 2011 that rendered him paraple-gic, unable to feel or use any extremity other than his right arm. By strapping him-self to the board and using his right arm to paddle and feet to steer, Kimo is able to navigate the water and ocean for which he loves most. When Kimo crossed the finish line, hundreds gathered in an emotional outpouring of support."I think I speak for everyone when I say how tremendously moving it was to be witness to Kimo’s unbelievable spirit and heart at this year’s Ho'olaule'a,” says OluKai director of marketing, Kerry Konrady. "The Aloha that was shared during his decent to the finish line and his unsurpassed determination was something we will all have with us forever."In a moving acknowledgement of Ralph Goto, retired Administrator of the Ocean Safety and Lifeguard Services Division, Archie Kalepa, OluKai konohiki and legendary waterman, honored Goto for his contributions to the water rescue program. Additionally a proclamation was heard by the Mayor of the County of Maui, Alan Arakawa. Finally, as the weekend came to a close, OluKai employees, guests and local volunteers gathered Monday for OluKai’s Annual Giveback Day, under the guid-ance of esteemed giveback partner, Maui Cultural Lands. Traveling to Kaheawa Beach, a windmill site referred to as Wao Akua (translation: realm of the gods), the team planted Koa trees, contributing ef-forts towards a reforestation and archeo-logical stabilization project that will benefit generations to come.

Lifting, hammering, stroking, this is what Hayden Ramler, “the paddler” does when he works construction. He also puts in long hours as I recently witnessed him in action on land, at a near by construction site. For the few weeks on the site, he was the first to arrive and the last to leave. In water he seems to do the same thing, getting the lift in the boat he is in, while hammering his stroke. This is what most people that have heard of the elite & powerful paddler from the Big Island. What most do not realize about this quiet, reserved paddler, is his real talent. Photography. Last year while on a project with his good friend and paddling team member Mario Mausio, they built an open class canoe in his Marios back-yard. Ramler was involved in building & paddling it in last years Olamau Race on his home island, his team submitted photographs of the build as we published those photos in Makai Magazine. Ramler was responsible for those shots while building the canoe. His photos were remarkable! The photos you see gracing these pages are his. Haydenss assignment was to capture the recent Kaiwi Chan-nel OC-1 Solo World Championship. He had free reign with the subject, and here are some fantastic images. I’m sure you will be hearing more about Hayden Ramler as he pursues his passion!

8 HEALTH HAZARDS TO AVOID IN YOUR HOME

1. Bed linens. These can hold germs, grime, and allergens. Wash at least once a week using the hottest washer and dryer settings. It takes extreme heat to kill most bacteria.

2. Pet toys. These can be a source of staph, as well as coliforms, yeast, and mold. Hard toys should be cleaned once a month with hot soapy water, rinsed, disinfected with a mild bleach solution, then rinsed again. Sanitize soft toys with laundry on the hot water cycle.

3. Refrigerator ice and water dispensers. A recent study found these can be loaded with yeast and mold. Clean the ice dispens-er monthly. Turn off and wash the bin with dish detergent and warm water, then dry with a clean towel. Every six months, pour 3-4 cups of distilled white vinegar into the water supply tube and let it run through to sanitize. Wipe water spout once a week with cotton swab and a dry cloth.

4. HVAC ducts. In a year, a 1500 square foot home's ducktwork can collect 40 pounds of dust containing allergens, bac-teria, dirt, fungi, mold, and about 40,000 dust mites per ounce. When you turn

on the system, all this circulates, causing fatigue, sinus problems, and asthma. Have a NADCA-certified company clean ducts every 2 years.

5. Sponges. Unless disinfected, a sponge is a prime place for germs to grow, and then spread around the kitchen. Clean a nonmetallic sponge by completely wet-ting it and placing it in the microwave on high for 2 minutes. Throw out sponges after two weeks. Better options are towels, dishcloths, and rags you can sanitize with bleach in your washing machine's hot water cycle.

6. Ceiling fan blades. These are home to dust mites which the fan then circulates. Put a pillowcase on each blade and pull it off while wiping the dust into it. Empty it outside, and then launder the case inside out on your hottest washer and dryer set-tings.

7. The dishwasher. Mold can form here when moisture lingers after the heat cycle ends. Run your dishwasher only when you can empty it soon after it stops.8. The washing machine. Mold and staph can grow here. Once a month, use the self-clean cycle or put a cup of bleach in an empty machine and run on the hottest setting. Leave the door or lid open when not in use.

As canoes line up across Kailua Bay for the start of the 43rd Annual Queen Lili'uokalani Long Distance Outrigger Ca-noe Races Saturday, August 30, 2014, it will be the tale of the Hawaiian koa canoe that is whispered across the starting line. Last year, after a dry spell longer than most paddlers can remember, a traditional Hawaiian koa canoe crossed the finish line first in the men’s division. Shouts of joy and excitement rang out across Kailua Pier as an iron crew (meaning no crew changes) paddled their Hawaiian koa canoe over the finish line and into the history books. Over the past few decades, outrigger canoe rac-ing throughout the world has evolved with modern technology and lighter weight ma-terials, filling outrigger canoe race starting lines with sleek, state-of-the-art canoes that have eclipsed traditional models. Next gen-eration composite and laminate canoes are revealing new possibilities with faster times, and new even more innovative designs as outrigger canoe paddling gains popularity throughout the world. However, it’s this very authentic experi-ence of paddling a traditional Hawaiian koa canoe in the Queen’s Race that excites many international crews as they prepare to race this year’s Queen Lili'uokalani Long Distance Outrigger Canoe Races. Racing in the Queen’s Race is an experience that cannot be captured anywhere else on the planet. In order to understand the future of outrigger canoe racing, take a moment to learn the sport’s historical context. How did Hawaii’s official sport get its start? A chapter in history is needed to get the complete story. In 1902, Queen Lili'uokalani’s cousin Prince Kuhio commissioned Henry Weeks, a noted Kona furniture maker and canoe builder, to build the fastest racing canoe in the islands, christened the A‘a. According to the late Tommy Holmes in his clas-sic book, The Hawaiian Canoe, the A‘a, “captured wins for its Hawaiian crew in legendary series of races in 1906, 1907, 1908, and 1910.” Hawaii’s first racing canoe weighed in at a hefty 620-pounds and was progressive for its day. Before the A‘a revo-lutionized racing, ordinary fishing canoes that served a more practical dual purpose were used. Hawaiians built their outrigger canoes from one-piece carved out hardwood hulls made from native koa. Koa can reach heights of 100 feet and is recognized as one of the finest textured woods in the world. By the 1930s, traditional Hawaiian koa canoes being constructed exclusively for racing were most likely built in South Kona. These Hawaiian racing canoes constructed between 1940 and 1977 are considered by many to be decedents of the

2014 Queen Lili’uokalani Long Distance Outrigger Canoe Races Tells the Tale of the Traditional Hawaiian Koa Canoe

Malia-type Kona canoe, the early 1930 de-sign. By 1977, Tahitian-style designs started showing up on the starting line. More recently, technology has moved outrigger canoe racing towards lighter weight designs. As the 43rd Annual Queen Lili'uokalani Long Distance Outrigger Canoe Races launches its full schedule of ocean sport races this Labor Day weekend, paddlers will still be awed knowing that ancient canoe racing was a sport reserved to keep a chief ’s warriors in excellent condition. 43rd Annual Queen Lili'uokalani Long Distance Outrigger Canoe Races On Saturday, August 30, 2014, the world’s largest long distance race starts at Kailua Bay where the women paddle the Kona coast and head for their finish line eighteen miles away at H?naunau. Iron women crews, those who paddle the entire 18 miles without any crew changes, start the race at 7:30 am, followed by the crews paddling in the Unlimited division, whose boats have no weight limit, and finally, the women crews who will change paddlers throughout the race get their start at 7:40 am. Both the men’s and women’s races have five-minute split staggered starts. Men’s crews follow the same staggered start racing from H?naunau back to Kailua starting at 11:45 am. The first men’s crew is expected to cross the finish line in Kailua Bay about 1:00 pm. Best place to view the race? Book a seat aboard Blue Sea Cruises or Body Glove Cruises for a front row view of Saturday’s signature race. Blue Sea Cruises is making their Spirit of Kona tour catamaran avail-able for transporting race participants and spectators. Then as the sun sets, paddlers from

around the world will gather in Historic Kailua Village to celebrate with the tra-ditional Torch Light Parade. This Queen Lili‘uokalani Canoe Race parade begins at Hale Halawai, travels through Historic Kai-lua Village and ends on Kailua Pier. The public is invited to cheer on their favorite crews along the Ali‘i Drive parade route. Several other official Queen Lili‘uokalani Canoe Race events unfold throughout the holiday weekend:
