Lincoln-Douglas DebatesAt this time, senators were
elected by state legislatures.
The debates took place at seven different locations. (Ottawa, Freeport, Jonesboro, Charleston, Galesburg, Quincy and Alton)
Many of the debates focused on slavery, which is the major issue Lincoln faces in the presidential election of 1860.
They focused a lot of the attention on the Compromise of 1850, which dealt with territory issues.

Lincoln-Douglas DebatesLincoln believed that even
though blacks were inferior to whites, they should be treated equal. He thought slavery was immoral.
Douglas did not think slavery was wrong. He believed each new state should be able to choose whether or not they want slavery.
