5GAGNE FOUR
Present the material to be learned
AUDIO SCRIPT:
“Clickers” is the
common name for
classroom response
systems. Each
student has an
individual response
pad which is about
the size of a credit
card. Each response
pad has buttons
numbered one to
nine and lettered A to
I. The lecturer
displays a multiple
choice question and
the students press
the button on their
response pad which
corresponds to their
answer. Clickers can
be used to obtain
anonymous
responses or they
can be used for
assessment.

CLICKERS
6GAGNE FOUR
Present the material to be learned
AUDIO SCRIPT:Students can be asked to do some pre-lecture reading. To ensure they have
completed the reading the lecturer can put some multiple choice questions
up at the start of the lecture to which the students must respond.
Students can be asked a number of questions on a topic before a lecture
commences. This then helps to focus them on the lecture because they will
want to discover the answers as the lecture proceeds. They are then re-
polled at the end of the lecture. If there are more correct answers at the
end of the lecture (compared to at the beginning) then the lecturer knows
that most students have understood the lecture material. If there are less
correct responses then the lecturer is alerted to a potential problem.
Students can be asked questions during a lecture. They are then shown
what percentage of students voted for each answer but they are not told
the correct answer. They are then encouraged to discuss the answers with
their peers and the question is re-polled to determine if there is more of a
consensus as to what the correct answer is. This method promotes peer
interaction and peer instruction.
