DESCRIPTION

When the on-going cost of maintaining an IT asset is far greater than the cost of purchase, the TCO needs to make sense beyond just the CAPEX. In this session we share why in a Virtual Client Ecosystem, if you aren't deploying a Thin Client, you aren't making the most of your investment.

WHY THIN CLIENTS?

Page 9: Client Infrastructure - Time to Rethink

BENEFITS OF THIN CLIENTS

– REDUCED CAPEX COSTS through lower device costs and longer lifecycles

– 80% LESS POWER than a traditional desktop PC

– RELIABILITY REDUCES IT COSTS and FREES UP IT RESOURCES with less desk-side support demand

– CENTRALISED MANAGEMENT and Simplified Setup & Deployment

– REDUCE FACILITY COSTS with up to 67% lower energy and cooling demand

– SECURE DEVICE, locked down

– END-USER PRODUCTIVITY INCREASES, due to less support issues and increased flexibility

What’s involved in turning my old PC into a “Thin Client Analogue”?

13 STEPS TO REPURPOSING A PC

1 Identify the desktops under scope, and determine

the age and existing configuration

2 Determine whether the configuration and aging

suggest further useful life or residual value

3 Check if there is a spares pool or replacement desktop

4 Determine the SLA today for these devices and who

delivers this service, does the provider (if not internal) need to be notified, and, if internal, does the staffing level remain the same?

5 Using the ticketing system, schedule a

desk-side support call

6 Technician arrives desk-side to remove the hard disk

and record a tracking number to place in inventory where it will be ultimately cleansed then destroyed

7 End user asks about the retention and migration

of any personal or historical data

8 Desktop is reset and established as a “terminal”

or re-purposed

9 All software is removed electrically and harvested

10 End user signs off on the work and ticket is closed

11 Secure the disk and cleanse

12 Determine how to destroy the disks and record

13 Establish new re-purposed desktop in inventory

tracking system, not as a desktop, but as a re-purposed device so there will be no committed SLA for desk-side support

Immediate and ongoing cost models.

HOW DOES THIS AFFECT THE BOTTOM LINE?

THIN CLIENTS

– HP Asset Recovery

+ Reduced implementationoverheads

= Immediate cost benefit

– Ongoing costs reduced

RE-PURPOSED DESKTOPS

– May give small reduction initially, however this must be balanced against reduced asset value over time

– Increased energy use and management/breakfix costs
