We all lead our own lives...

Cut to a house folded out of paper. It’s on a dark blue background and it’s dark inside.

...but together ...

The light turns on inside the house, suggesting that people are coming home and starting to use electricity.

- at certain times of day...

Cut to another building: we hear the sound of a washing machine being turned on, and the building begins to shake mirroring the movement of a washing machine.

and certain times of year...

Cut again to another building: we hear the sound of a microwave being turned on. The building starts to turn around, replicating the movement of a microwave.

...

Cut again to another building: we hear the sound of a kettle, and we see some steam come out of the chimley.

...

Cut again to another building: we hear the sound of a stereo. The buildings vibrate and we see the windows light up to reflect the changing levels of the music.

...our demand for energy peaks.

Cut to a scene with all the buildings together in a small community/town. Each building is still moving as per the scenes before, and we hear each sound representing the various electrical appliances.

And working out how to best meet the ups..

We cut to a wider scene of the town, and see that the town is plugged into a power station on the grid. Dials are dropped into the scene, to show the demand and supply of energy at peak times.

and downs of our energy needs...

The scene becomes darker as we move into the early hours, and we see the demand has reduced, but the power plant is still making energy. The buildings stop moving as the energy is turned off.

...presents a growing challenge as we...

The scene changes to afternoon and the dials change according to energy usage. The buildings start to move again.

..move towards a future powered by greener, cleaner sources.

We cut to a close up of the power plant. We see coal (scrunched up paper) rolling inside. Pollution increases. Characters protest against dirty energy, reinforcing reasons to move towards greener solutions.

Because, as we reduce our dependence on fossil fuels...

We cut to a different angle of the grid. Wind turbines enter the scene. The wind they create pushes the power plant off of the grid.

...replacing our conventional power stations with wind farms...

We see the wind turbines settle onto the grid.

...and solar panels - our energy supply will become..

Solar planels are added to the scene. The scientist flies a kite.

We can’t ask the wind to blow harder...

Cut to a scene with a scientist blowing away with a hairdryer.

or the sun to shine more brightly, whenever demand rises.

Cut again to see two scientists fitting a lightbulb.

...less able to respond to changes in demand. Clouds come in and cover the sun and the wind stops blowing. The kite falls down and the windmills stop turning.

So how can we ensure that the grid of the future...

Cut to a cardboard map of Britain; the grid animates on on top.

...will be able to cope with these ups and downs?

Cut out to see that it is a control panel, projecting the future grid. The hand of one of the scientists adjusts the settings of the grid. The dials change as the clock moves foward in time.

...

The dials continue to flicker up and down and we see things on the grid change (e.i turbines stop and start, houses flash, tidal waves rise and fall).

...Should we invest in energy storage so that energy generated by renewables...

Cut to another screen showing various (inventive!) ways of storing energy

...can be used at a later time?

...as the wind stops blowing, as the sun is covered, the hand of the scientist comes back in and “releases” the stored energy back into the system.

Should we keep our ‘dirty’ power stations on standby, if the grid needs a boost?

The scientist presses the emergency button and the screen changes again to show a traditional power station, the back up.

And at what cost?...

The smoke coming out of the power station starts filling up the entire screen, signalling a bleak future.

...

...and eventually the whole screen goes to black. We hear a blown fuse and a ‘power down’ noise.

Researchers at the University of Oxford are wondering whether we, the energy users, could help them solve this conundrum.

Cut wide to see the house from the beginning of the animation. We reveal that it is actually being observed by the Oxford scientists!

Is it possible that we could change our habits enough...

Cut close as the house opens...

... to shift our energy usage away from times when the system struggles?

...and loads of appliances spill out to show all the things we might have on at peak time.A little sign comes in to remind us of the peak hours.

To work it out, they first need to know what we actually do with all that energy during peak demand;

Cut to inside another house. We see all the appliances on vari-ous coloured carboard boxes, the characters and other interior is animated on digitally. In this scene a parent is on the computer while a child plays a consol on the TV.

... are we doing time-bound tasks like making dinner?

...Cut to another scene of a character cooking.

Or are we hoovering, doing the laundry or starting the dishwasher…?

Cut to another scene of a dryer and washer on.

Tasks that you wouldn’t mind doing later ...

Cut to another scene of a man sleeping while his robo henry hoover does his cleaning for him.

The promise of lower bills? Knowing when you can avoid turning on those dirty power stations? tThe characters start picking up the appliances and carrying them along the timeline to other times. Some race each other, others help each other out.

... Or could smart appliances - set to operate in off-peak hours - be the answer?

Cut to further along the timeline where a washing machine is on at 12 AM.

...And what would help you make that change?

...Cut out to a timeline with all the appliances placed between 5 and 7 PM.The characters from the previous scenes are all looking up at them.

Further along we see a storage heater working at 3 AM

To find out how, visit the METER project at www.energy-use.org.

The characters move along to a giant phone with the Meter projects app on it and a link to the website. They all start to engage with it.

YOU could help Oxford’s researchers discover more about how we use energy. This will contribute to a cheaper, more reliable and cleaner energy future.

Cut to a new scene featuring some of the characters. As the VO says “YOU“ they all realise, “Oh, me!. I can help”.

Finally we stop at 5 AM where we see a slow cooker cooking a chicken and a hungry cat watching eagerly.
