Join us as Ms. Marks reads from her novel To Elevate & Adorn the Mind. The fi ctional journal of Betsey Colt Foot, recreates the story of the founding of Albany Academy for Girls in 1814. In 1814 Albany, girls were not considered capable of higher learn-ing. Betsey Colt Foot believes men and women are intellectual equals. She assumes The Albany Academy, chartered in 1813, will include girls. She is wrong. For the daughters of the Ameri-can Revolution, the War of Independence is not over. Hi, Im Edwina! Im a spunky girl who loves to play with other dogs. Im the perfect size and my friends at the

    humane society call me the little bullet. The minute I get outside I love to run around and play and then roll on my back for some belly rubs. Im a really great girl and would fit in with just about any family who wants a fun-loving pittie girl. Come down and meet me because I

    wont be staying here long!

    Whats a sweet, kitten-faced girl like me doing homeless? As you can see, I have the makings of a real beauty with my or-ange coloring and fluffy tail. A little help with my grooming and a good diet and I will be a real knockout. Im still a little

    Diagnosing A Leaky CarVery often drivers find that the seats or the mats below their feet are damp or downright sopping wet. But unless a window or sunroof was left open during a rainstorm, drivers may find it dif-ficult to decipher why their vehicles are suddenly soaked.

    Unfortunately, when a vehicle's interior is wet, that could be a sign of a significant problem, one that can gradually worsen over time. Wetness can cause electrical components or metal structures in the car to rot, and a soggy interior may eventually be overcome by mold. It is best to find out what is causing the leak as soon as possible and have the problem fixed just as quickly.

    Finding the source of a leak is not always easy. Some-times drivers can locate it themselves and then fix the problem on their own, while more serious problems might need to be handled by a professional. But it is best to assess the situation before booking an appointment with your mechanic.

    Cars can spring a leak for a variety of reasons. Leaks from systems under the hood, as well as rainwater or wa-ter from washing the car, can infiltrate the interior if seals around doors and/or windows are broken or gaskets are worn out. Figuring out which type of liquid is entering your vehicle can help you determine what's behind the leak.

    A clear, slippery liquid under the seats may be indica-tive of a leak in the brake fluid reservoir. Brake fluid is a liquid used in the braking system to apply hydraulic pressure from the master cylinder to the calipers to the pads against the wheel drums. If you discover brake fluid, check the master cylinder or the clutch master cylinder to see if there is a leak or spillover of the fluid.

    Coolant also can leak under the dashboard and into the foot wells of a car. Coolant is a sticky, green and sweet-smelling fluid, and a coolant leak could mean that a heater core or hose in the cooling system is leaking. In such instances, hoses may need to be replaced.

    Some vehicles have water diverters on the sides of their windshields to make sure water flows off of the windshield when the wipers are in use. Also, the trough where the wipers rest should have a sealant that prevents water from entering at the base of the windshield. Over time, both can wear out and may need to be replaced and resealed. Try sitting in the car on a dry day and spraying a hose on the windshield. See if any water eventually makes it inside of the car. If it does, the windshield is likely the reason your vehicle's interior is getting wet.

    A clogged drain in a vehicle's heating, ventilation and air conditioning system is one of the more common causes of interior water damage. If the drain is clogged, condensation from the system cannot drain from the tube. In such instances, water backs up into the system and can actually blow out of the car vents or elsewhere in the vehicle, forming a pool on the floor of the car. Leaves or debris can cause a blockage. If excess water is left in the HVAC system, it can damage the blower motor. Also, a faulty seal that is located between the HVAC case and the firewall of the vehicle may cause water to leak into the passenger compartment under the carpet.

    In some cases, cleaning blocked drains in a vehicle's HVAC system may be as simple as blowing compressed air through the vents or using a wire to clear out leaves or dirt. Other times it may be hard to access the leaks, and such instances are often best left to a mechanic.

    The causes of leaks in a car are not always so easy to diagnose. But it is important to figure out where the water is coming from early on to minimize the damage water can do to your vehicle. After taking a vehicle through the car

    wash, drivers may notice a leak inside the car.

    Simple Ways To Extend The Life Of Your Vehicle According to data from TrueCar.com, in 2012 the average new car cost $30,500. Thats a con-siderable expense, especially at a time when fuel costs remain high and cost of living continues to rise.

    Because new cars have become so expensive, more and more vehicle owners are looking for ways to extend the life of their vehicles. The longer a car can stay on the road, the better an in-vestment that vehicle becomes. Fortunately, there are several steps vehicle owners can take that should ensure their vehicles stay on the road for years to come.

    * Scale back on short trips. The toll cold starts take on a vehicle can add up over time. When a car is started, condensation builds up in the vehicles exhaust system. On longer trips, that conden-sation will gradually evaporate. However, on short trips, that condensation often does not have enough time to evaporate, and over time too many short trips will lead to an accumulation of wa-ter in the muffler that can lead to rust and rust holes on the muffler. Short trips also can negatively affect gas mileage. When possible, leave your car at home on trips into town when you can just as easily walk or ride a bicycle. Over time, reducing the amount of short trips you take in your car will greatly reduce wear and tear on your vehicle and improve your fuel efficiency as well.

    * Stick to the manufacturers recommended maintenance schedule. Adhering to your vehicles maintenance schedule serves many purposes, including improving the its durability and protect-ing various components, including its cooling system and drivetrain. While many manufacturers used to recommend changing a vehicles oil every 3,000 miles, many of todays newer auto-mobiles need their oil changed less frequently. Check your owners manual for manufacturer recommendations regarding oil changes, and dont forget to replace the oil filter when changing your vehicles oil.

    * Pay attention to brake pads. Brake pads that are allowed to wear down can cause damage

    to the brakes rotors and cali-pers. That damage can prove costly and make things harder on your vehicle. Keep an eye on your vehicles brake pads, which are far less expensive to replace than rotors and cal-ipers, and do not allow them to wear down to metal.

    * Keep your tires properly in-flated. Tires that are under-in-flated will negatively impact your vehicles fuel efficiency. In addition, the tires life ex-pectancy is reduced consider-ably when tires are not prop-erly inflated. Routinely check your tire pressure, especially if you drive a lot, and keep tires inflated at the pressure recommended in your vehi-cles owners manual.

    * Be mindful when filling up your tank. Many people do not pay much attention to their surroundings when pulling into the filling sta-tion. But when you fill up can impact your cars life expec-tancy. Perhaps the worst time to fill your tank is when the fuel tanker is in the gas sta-tion refilling the underground tanks. Thats because the process of filling the underground tanks can stir up sedi-ment that had settled at the bottom of those tanks. If that sediment finds its way into your vehicles gas tank, it can clog filters and fuel injectors and negatively affect the vehicles performance. So unless your car is running on empty, avoid refilling its gas tank when the tanker is still in the station.

    * Take care of your vehicles interior, too. Caring for a car is not just about being good to whats under the hood. Caring for the cars interior will not necessarily impact its performance, but a well-kept interior will improve how you look at your vehicle and how much you enjoy driving it. The longer you enjoy driving your vehicle, the longer you are likely to keep it. Preserve the vehicles door and window seals; clean the dashboard, including the gauges, vacuum the floor mats; and wipe down the vehicles interior, whether its cloth or leather. Keeping up the appearance of the cars interior will make the vehicle more enjoyable to drive and increase its value at resale.

    Keeping a vehicles interior clean can make it more enjoyable to drive while en-couraging owners to keep their cars for longer periods of time.

    Top-Rated Sedans For The New Model YearSedans have long been a popular option among drivers. Sedans are popular family cars and are frequently seen as safer alternatives to compacts and coupes. Each year, Consumer Reports and Motor Trend rate the best vehicles in each class, and the 2014 list includes some surprising sedans.

    For the first time in 20 years, an American car has topped the list of the best-rated sedans, ac-cording to Consumer Reports. The Chevrolet Impala has seized the top-rated spot away from the Japanese and European manufacturers who have dominated the list for two decades. The 2014 Impala scored a 95 on a scale of 100. Many car enthusiasts and trend forecasters say this rating is telling of General Motors' efforts to improve consumers' perception of the brand. In one year, the Impala went from one of the worst vehicles in the category to the best.

    The Consumer Reports ratings include road test results as well as safety information. Reliability and owner satisfaction ratings provided on older cars are based on surveys from millions of subscribers. When rating sedans, predicted reliability, owner satisfaction, accident avoidance, overall MPG, and other qualities each factor into a vehicle's overall score.

    Sedans are categorized based on size, with vehicles broken down into small, midsize and large categories. Sedans also are classified by their styles, such as upscale, luxury, sports, and even fuel-efficient. Overall, sedans remain a popular choice because they can provide a good balance of cost, comfort and efficiency. Many sedans are roomy, quiet and comfortable, making them ideal family vehicles for those who do not want the girth or potentially bumpy ride of a truck.

    In addition to the Chevy Impala, Consumer Reports list the following vehicles among their most highly-rated sedans:

    * Toyota Camry Hybrid XLE * Toyota Camry XLE (V6) * Honda Accord LX (4-cyl.)

    * Honda Accord EX-L (V6) * Hyundai Sonata Limited (2.0T) * Hyundai Sonata GLS (2.4T)

    * Chevrolet Malibu 2LTZ (2.0T) * Subaru Legacy 3.6R * Toyota Camry LE (4-cyl.)
