A community kitchen in Clifton has helped raised funds for a local girl who has congenital muscular dystrophy and is blind.

Parkgate Community Kitchen and Angel Green Christian Fellowship each raised £500 – to make a fantastic total of £1,000 – to support local girl Ruby Johnson.

Ruby’s parents have been raising money for a sensory garden.

The community kitchen says it will continue to support local good causes from the proceeds

of the kitchen in order to give something back to the people in the community.

The kitchen opened in November 2015 and serves over 45 meals every Friday at Parkgate Community Centre.

It is open from 12pm to 5pm on Nobel Road at Chamberlain Close, Clifton, NG11 8RX.

Three-course meals for adults are £2.50, children £1.50 or Drink & Cake is 50p.

Clifton Playing Fields is one of 29 parks in Nottingham to be assessed by Keep Britain Tidy’s Green Flag award scheme as amongst the very best in the UK.

The Green Flag award recognises and rewards the best parks and green spaces across the country.

A Green Flag flying overhead is a sign to the public that the space boasts the highest possible standards, is beautifully maintained and has excellent facilities.

All the flags flying this year are a testament to the huge efforts of both staff and volunteers, who work tirelessly to maintain the high standards demanded by the Green Flag Award.

Nottingham City councillor, Dave Trimble, said: “We are absolutely delighted to have been awarded 29 Green Flag Awards this year, an amazing increase of seven, from Keep Britain Tidy.

“This award recognises and highlights the value we put on our parks and green spaces, they are an important part of people’s lives and wellbeing in Nottingham.

“It is fantastic that Nottingham City Council’s investment in parks has been recognised with these accolades.”

International Green Flag Award scheme manager, Paul Todd, told The Local News: “We are delighted to be celebrating another record-breaking year for the Green Flag Award scheme, especially as we celebrate the 20th anniversary of the awards.”

By Thomas Hewitt

An MP has reached out to two budget supermarkets in a bid to tempt them to open a store in Clifton in the near future.

Labour’s Lilian Greenwood, who represents Nottingham South, has written to both Aldi and Lidl asking them to invest in her constituency after Nottingham City Council called for better shops in the area.

The MP launched an online petition to gain the support of residents in Clifton, which reached over 250 signatures in two hours and has now passed its target of 500.

Both Aldi and Lidl say they very much welcome the interest and are positive about coming to Clifton, which they describe as one of the “top target towns” for a store.

Ms Greenwood told the Local News: “They are really interested in coming to Clifton. One of the reasons he said they were interested is because of the good transport links, such as the tram,

which is something really upbeat for Clifton.

“I was confident that local residents would be keen to support the idea, but the response has been amazing. I certainly hope Aldi or Lidl will sit up and listen, but if anyone can get the attention of Aldi or Lidl, it’s the Clifton community.”

In a recent survey, 54% of residents in the area said they would like to see an Aldi in the area, whilst 29% said they wanted a Lidl. Earlier this month, Nottingham City Council announced that Clifton would receive a £500,000 grant to help make the area a better place to shop, work and socialise.

Clifton North councillor and area committee chair, Pat Ferguson, said: “Clifton has some wonderful facilities to offer both residents and visitors, from award-winning parks to a popular outdoor market and shops.

“As a council we are committed to investing in our communities and the funding will help build on

the improvements already made, making it a great place both for visitors and the local community.”

A bigger supermarket to offer competition to the Morrisons on Green Lane is something the residents of Clifton have been wanted for some time.

Ms Greenwood added: “I know one or two people have understandably expressed concerns about the impact on other shops in Clifton. I think that because the site is

close to top shops it could actually increase the number of people using the local shops and the market. The new store would create around 30 to 40 jobs for the area as well, so the talks were incredibly positive and I will be keeping in touch with them to see how this progresses.”

Local MP campaigns for new budget supermarket in Clifton

Plans are being forward for a new retail and residential development in Clifton. The site earmarked is Fairham House, which is bordered by Green Lane and Langstrath Road, next to Glapton Academy. The proposals are being put forward by Derby-based developer, Cedar House Investments.

Peter Gadsby, chairman of Cedar House Investments, told The Local News: “We would hope to have an application in to the council by September and would be looking at planning consent early in the new year. Construction could then start in spring 2017 with a projected completion date of Easter 2018. These much-needed new facilities will complement the existing shops and provide more choice for the local community. One of the shops will be a new discount food supermarket.”

Clifton residents have long been calling for a budget supermarket, with Nottingham South MP Lilian

Greenwood opening discussions with both Aldi and Lidl - and also starting a petition to pass on to each company’s CEO. Both supermarkets have previously expressed an interest in coming to Clifton, with the latter saying that it is one of their “top-priority areas”. The proposal is also expected to include apartments, but the finer details are yet to be revealed.

“Cedar House is a developer based in the East Midlands and we have done several recent successful schemes in Nottingham that involve new local retail facilities, as well as employment and housing development,” added Mr Gadsby.

“We will be asking people to comment about the plans and then our intention is to take account of anything that is said prior to a planning application being submitted to Nottingham City Council.” (Read more details about the Aldi and Lidl petition on the next page).

The city of Nottingham has smashed its climate change targets four years early, with help from houses in Clifton along the way. Nottingham City Council undertook a project in various areas of the city, including Clifton, to install solar panels on the roofs of 4,000 council houses. The insulation programme was also made available to private home owners.

Recent statistics released by the government show a 33% reduction in carbon emissions since 2005, beating a target set by Nottingham City Council to reach a 26% reduction by 2020. This puts Nottingham top of all the core cities – the largest cities in the UK outside London – with the greatest

reduction in emissions and the lowest emissions per person. The city is now producing almost three tonnes less of CO2 per year per person than in 2005.

Councillor Alan Clark, Nottingham City Council’s portfolio holder for energy and sustainability, said: “It’s a great achievement to have met this important target four years early. Nottingham is at the forefront of sustainability awareness and these latest figures maintain the city’s position as the UK’s most energy self-sufficient city.

“Data shows that since 2011-12 there has been a significant fall in the city’s carbon emissions due to a reduction in domestic energy use.

“This coincides with our programme of energy saving investments in social housing, such as external wall insulation.

“There has been a real move towards sustainability in the city with a wide range of organisations in the public, private and voluntary sectors carrying out vital work to reduce our environmental impact. Beating our target is a fantastic recognition of the efforts across the city to achieve this aim.”

Councillor Nick McDonald, Nottingham City Council’s portfolio holder for business, growth and transport, said: “A significant part of this reduction – around 13% – is due to the popularity of public

transport, cycling and walking in Nottingham. We have Europe’s largest fleet of electric buses, the addition of the new Chilwell and Clifton tram routes and £6.1m invested in improving cycling routes to provide great alternatives to using cars to get around the city.

“We are also proving to be very successful in getting government funding to introduce innovative low-emission transport options – electric charging infrastructure, all-electric buses, electric taxis, gas-powered buses and improved travel planning for businesses and their staff. The result is that we are continually reducing the environmental impact of transport in Nottingham.”

Clifton helps Nottingham achieve 2020 climate change target early

A third-year pharmacy student, who is studying at the University of Nottingham, is going to run the Robin Hood Half-Marathon in September to raise money for the charity, Revitalise.

Laura McCoubrey, 21, is a volunteer at the charity which provides respite holidays to disabled people and their carers.

She told The Local News: “I was inspired to sign up for the event after a spell of volunteering as a St John Ambulance first-aider last year.

“Even though I saw lots of injuries from the race, I was stationed at the finish line and saw the absolute jubilation of the finishers who had made it.

“After treating injured runners, I now have an even greater appreciation of the importance of proper training, hydration and overall preparation.

"At the moment I train probably every couple of days and try to eat

as healthy as possible - and I've really enjoyed the health boost it has given me.

“This is by far the furthest I've ever run and in my training I'm currently doing 10k in about an hour.

“I would love to do the half-marathon in under three hours, but we will see.

“I'm quite nervous but am hoping on the day that the crowd support will really help push me on.”

Laura has one year left at university and then hopes to train as a pharmacist in an NHS hospital.

She also loves playing tennis, cooking, travelling and socialising.

Laura is currently trying to learn French, studying at a French college in Lyon this summer.

“Once I signed up for the half-marathon there was no doubt in my mind that I wanted to do it to raise money for the charity Revitalise,” continued Laura.

“Revitalise is a national charity that provides respite holidays for disabled people and their carers.

“After volunteering for a week in Southampton on a Revitalise holiday in 2014, I saw how valuable the change of scene was for the guests.

“Revitalise's current aim is to operate a UK-wide network of respite centres, such that every disabled person and carer in the UK is within two hours' travel of a Revitalise centre.

“To do this, three new centres need to be opened and I would love to raise as much as possible to help towards this goal.”

If you wish to sponsor Laura please visit her Just Giving website uk.virginmoneygiving.com/LauraMcCoubrey.

You can also find out more about Revitalise by logging onto their website at revitalise.org.uk.

Representatives from Nottingham’s tram network visited Clifton’s Lark Hill retirement village to deliver a special safety demonstration to the local residents.

Lee North, who is a quality, health, safety & environment officer at NET, met with residents from Lark Hill to discuss how they can continue to use the tram safely and what to do should they get into difficulty.

Taking the group on board a static tram at the network’s Clifton South stop, Lee highlighted a number of features both on the tram and the platform, including help buttons, CCTV points, hand rails and reserved seating.

The important demonstration also gave residents the opportunity to learn about drivers’ departing routines and the procedures they go through to ensure the safety of passengers.

Lee told The Local News: “The tram provides a simple and hassle-free way for people of all ages to travel around Nottingham.

“We want to make sure all our passengers are able to ride safely, wherever they may be travelling.

“We hope that this visit to Lark Hill will help highlight some of our unique safety features and will give as many of the village’s residents as

possible the confidence to use the tram as often as they would like.”

The demonstration at Lark Hill follows the recent launch of NET’s new safety video.

Titled ‘We’re Safe Together’, the video highlights some top tips that

all passengers should remember when using the city’s tram network.

Darren Smith, NET’s deputy operations manager, also attended the safety demonstration and added: “Safety will always be our number-one priority.

“It’s important to remind passengers, whatever their age may be, to take as much care as possible when using the tram.

“A member of the NET team regularly attends residents’ meetings at Lark Hill.

“Meanwhile, we continue to work with communities and groups across Nottingham to make sure everyone can use our network as safely and as comfortably as possible.”

Lark Hill Village has a total of 327 one and two-bedroom apartments and bungalows, each with hallway, living room, kitchen and shower room.

Most homes have a balcony or shared patio.

Clifton’s Lark Hill residents learn more about safety on the tramNottingham is leading the country in an innovative approach that ensures world-class fibre optic cabling is installed when major works are being planned.

During the construction of the NET tram extension to Clifton South and Toton Lane, Nottingham City Council took the opportunity to install 17km of underground telecommunications infrastructure along the routes.

By doing this, they took advantage of lower installation costs and the council says it also avoids any future disruption to car drivers and pedestrians.

Now, Nottingham City Council has signed a multi-million pound 20-year concession agreement with ITS Technology Group.

This will see the city’s telecommunications ducting being used to connect local businesses to superfast broadband.

The deal is at no cost to the council by ensuring it recoups its initial modest investment.

Nottingham City Council also says this will guarantee it an income over the life of the project.

Over the period of the agreement, ITS will extend the reach of the fibre network up to 100kms, at no cost to the city council.

The network will be operated as an ‘Open Access Network’.

This means that any other operator will be able to use the fibre to connect to their customers, and will be able to do so at a fair commercial rate.

By having an Open Access Network, customers and businesses benefit from faster and more reliable connectivity at lower costs than are currently available.

Nottingham is fast becoming a hub of creative activity in sectors such as life sciences and digital media.

A key factor in supporting this growth is a modern cost-effective telecommunications infrastructure capable of offering low-cost world-class connectivity.

Councillor Nick McDonald, portfolio holder for growth and transport at Nottingham City Council, said: “The City Council took the opportunity to put this vital infrastructure in place while work was underway on the new tramlines.

“This minimised disruption and costs and will allow more local businesses to be connected to superfast broadband.

“This is an exciting new initiative that will have important long-term benefits for the city’s business community and will maintain Nottingham’s position as the best connected city in the UK.

“Businesses need to keep pace with the rapid developments in internet technology, especially our fast-growing digital media and biotech sectors which are so important for Nottingham’s economic future.

“This concession agreement does not cost Nottingham City Council. In fact, we will generate income over the years as the cable network is expanded.”

ITS Technology Group, who are specialists in designing, building and operating high-speed networks, have been awarded the 20-year contract to manage the infrastructure and install the telecommunications.

They are already delivering similar services to other cities.

Their focus will be on the high growth, Small to Medium Enterprise (SME) market, which will include strategic sites along the tram route such as Ng2, Nottingham Science Park and Nottingham’s Enterprise Zone.

As well as managing any future installations, ITS will also bring improvements to the city centre which is currently not served by ‘super-fast’ services, including the Creative Quarter and its newly refurbished creative units at Sneinton Market.

Roy Shelton, CEO of ITS Technology Group, said: “We are delighted to be part of this exciting concession agreement.

“We look forward to enhancing the digital lives of the businesses and communities that are based around Nottingham.

“This type of infrastructure investment is essential to the development and regeneration of areas.

“It is the fourth we have completed within the past 18 months to add to our 17 established networks across the UK.”

Local businesses can plug into superfast NETwork – via tramlines

There are also twelve high-value equipment packages available, to personalise Mégane, depending on model. Depending on trim level, other options include sunroof, 8.7-inch portrait touchscreen, full LED headlights, 18-inch alloy wheels and metallic paint. Optional personalisation packages are available.

The build quality of the new Megane’s cabin is excellent. Particularly good is the touchscreen infotainment system which features a usefully large screen. New Megane diesel powerplants are quiet and refined, the range is generously equipped and Renault have priced its latest star car very competitively priced.

On the debit side, lower spec versions have fairly humdrum cabins, The GT model could be a bit more exhilarating given Renault’s sporting prowess while the four-wheel steering set up can feel strange on occasions.

Unveiled at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show, the All-New Mégane hatchback displays Renault’s design language, as well as features and technologies from the executive segment above, into the family car C-segment for the first time. Renault’s new Mégane will be priced from £16,600 on-the-road.

It’ll be offered in an extensive 25-version line-up based on six trim levels familiar to owners of other Renault vehicles – Expression+, Dynamique Nav, Dynamique S Nav, Signature Nav, GT-Line Nav and GT Nav.

All provide a comprehensive standard specification, rising to the truly luxurious or sporty at the top-of-the-range.

Substantial gains have been made with the new Megane’s engine range in terms of performance and fuel efficiency. The 1.5-litre and 1.6-litre dCi diesel units both emit a low CO2 figure of 96g/km.

The former offers an average combined fuel consumption figure of 76.4mpg while the larger engine offers a still very creditable 68.9mpg (combined). Even the performance orientated GT’s 205PS

turbo engine emits a low 134g/km of CO2 while accelerating the car from standstill to 62mph in only 7.1 seconds.

Renault’s active and passive safety systems, such as adaptive cruise control, active emergency braking and lane departure warning have been applied throughout the range, while connectivity via the easy-to-

of additional equipment over the former with customers saving more than £1,100. It’s available with either a 1.0 TSI 115PS petrol engine or a1.6 TDI 115 PS diesel, costing £21,995 and £24,305 respectively.

Other versions, priced from £17,990, are also offered with a 1.4 150PS petrol power plant or 150 and 190PS 2.0-litre Diesel engines. The model can also be ordered with four-wheel-drive.

The flagship 2,0 TDI 150 Xcellence 4Drive model earned a top rating when assessed by Auto Express with the magazine declaring that “it follows in the footsteps of the Leon and goes straight to the top of the class.”

Stylish, exceedingly practical and with the highest safety rating in the Euro NCAP test programme, the Ateca is, clearly, a compelling new crossover vehicle. It’s also one representing great value for money.

THE most important new model from Spanish car maker SEAT is finally on its way to UK showrooms, writes Robert Maddox.

The Ateca SUV goes on sale in September after opening its honours account in style by claiming the Best Crossover title on its first appearance in the Auto Express New Car Awards last month (July).

The brand’s first SUV signalled its quality by seeing off competition that included some of the best sellers in what has become a pivotal part of the market and the result puts down a valuable marker for the Ateca’s all-round appeal as it progresses towards its hotly anticipated launch at Pentagon Nottingham Chilwell SEAT at High Road, Beeston on September 9.

Furthermore, its success was part of a formidable across-the-board performance by SEAT in this year’s

awards with the Leon, Leon ST, Leon Cupra 290 and Alhambra MPV also being commended.

Unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in March, the Ateca is the first vehicle in SEAT’s largest ever product offensive which will see four new models roll out in the next 18 months.

SEAT has taken its time with its first-ever SUV, to create what it believes is the best car of its ilk to live with everyday and the model has been praised for offering everything that is great about the Leon in a superb-looking new package.

The launch line-up includes a great-value First Edition version in addition to regular S, SE, FE and Xcellence examples.

Slotting into the range above the SE and below the flagship Xcellence, the high-spec First Edition offers more than £3,500

THE luxurious new Overland version is a top-of-the-range 4x4 offering sophisticated and stylish transport together with an elegant interior and premium equipment while also delivering the Jeep brand’s legendary off-road prowess.

Here is a model packed with a wealth of standard features and powered by a 2.2-litre MultiJet II 200 horsepower turbo diesel engine that’s paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission. Buyers are then offered either Active Drive I or Active Drive II 4WD.

The potent engine gives the higher-riding model a rest to 62mph acceleration time of 8.5 seconds and a top speed of 127mph. The Euro 6 unit has a 149g/km CO2 figure thanks to an improved final drive ratio when compared with the 2015 model year Cherokee. Jeep quotes fuel economy of 50.4 mpg on the combined cycle.

Available locally through Chris Variva’s Jeep showroom at Nottingham Road, Basford, the model is distinguished by a polished bright front grille and new body-coloured door cladding, front and rear bumpers and wheel arches.

It also features new 18-inch polished bright aluminium wheels, standard HID bi-xenon headlamps, and is finished with an Overland badge on the tailgate. Deep Cherry Red, Bright White, Brilliant Black and Billet Silver are the paintwork options.

Refined looks are complemented by a long list of premium enhancements, including powered Nappa leather ventilated and heated driver and front passenger seats with four-way lumbar adjustment. A huge plus is that the driver’s seat and mirrors can be programmed to memorise desired positions.

Stylish touches include a new steering wheel with wood insert, anodized silver bezels and vent surrounds, and Berber floor mats.

The interior is available in Morocco Black Nappa Leather, or in a brand new Pearl coloured Nappa Leather finish. Both interiors have no additional cost and both carry the signature Overland logo in premium stitching on the front seats.

A powerful Alpine Premium sound system is complemented by a Uconnect radio with 8.4-inch touchscreen display, Bluetooth and GPS navigation.

Also factor in the standard fitment of a stylish panoramic sunroof, powered tailgate and a ParkSense front and rear reverse assist system and the Jeep Cherokee Overland certainly represents an attractive proposition. It is priced at £38,745 with Active Drive I or £39,950 with Active Drive II.

ALFA ROMEO has produced a truly outstanding model in the stunning 4C.

Here is a compact two-seater that’s not only exceptionally beautiful but also one with an outstanding turbocharged, mid-mounted engine which produces more power per litre than that of a Ferrari 458 Speciale. It also boasts a lightweight chassis built from exotic carbon fibre, so, yes, is very much a scaled-down supercar.

Take your pick from the original coupe version or the Spider with

a roll-up soft-top that can be stowed in the boot. Together they signal the dawn of an exciting new era for the manufacturer that will see the launch of the first-ever Alfa Romeo SUV plus new sports saloons to rival the 3- and 5-Series cars from BMW. Currently, the UK line-up is restricted to the 4C, plus MiTo and Giulietta hatchbacks with all available through Chris Variava’s Alfa Romeo showroom at Nottingham Road, Basford, one of the brand’s leading dealerships in the UK.

The stunning ALFA ROMEO 4C The 4C employs the latest technologies of the brand’s newest models in its new, all-aluminium 1750 turbocharged petrol engine; the latest-generation Alfa TCT dry twin clutch transmission and the Alfa DNA driving mode selector - now with a new race mode.

Carbon-fibre was chosen for the one-piece monocoque because of its high levels of structural rigidity and exceptionally low weight and the car is built using sophisticated Formula 1-derived technologies.

It’s four-cylinder turbocharged engine sets new torque and specific power records for a motor of its size as it delivers 240hp at 6,000 rpm with maximum torque output of 350Nm (258 lb ft), available between 2,100 and 4,000 rpm. The flexible nature of the engine is underlined with 80% of its torque available from 1800 rpm. Acceleration is stunning. The car storms from rest to 62mph in just 4.5 seconds, reaching a top speed of160mph.

But this supercar performance isn’t at the expense of the environment.

The car’s light weight plus the advanced engine and transmission technologies ensure emissions fall well within the strict limits of Euro 6. Its official combined-cycle fuel economy figure is 41.5mpg and CO2 emissions are 157g/km.

In the cabin a multi-function, digital display occupies the instrument binnacle in place of traditional dials and the steering wheel is a bespoke, flat-bottomed, two-spoke one with integrated paddle gear-shifters. The remaining controls are grouped together on the tunnel console, including the button-operated TCT transmission selector and the DNA system selector. The DNA system alters the operational parameters of the engine, transmission, ESC and electronic Q2 differential depending on the driver’s requirements.

With composite bucket seats and aluminium pedals, too, the minimalistic, driver-focussed cabin is, indeed, a good place to be, further reinforcing that the 4C is a truly special Alfa Romeo.

share of 41%, and there is no doubt that these vehicles transform people’s quality of life not just with low running costs but also by reducing CO2 emissions and improving air quality in our region.’

Nottingham was chosen from a shortlist of 12 cities to become an internationally outstanding example for the adoption of ultra low emission, plug-in vehicles in a local area.

Go Ultra Low exists to help motorists understand the benefits, cost savings and capabilities of the variety of new ultra low emission vehicles on the market. The collaborative campaign is the first of its kind, bringing together the government, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders and a consortium of seven leading car manufacturers, including Mitsubishi.

CHRIS VARIAVA MITSUBISHi has welcomed news that the area will get a share of £40m to boost the number of plug-in cars on its roads.

The funding will be used to encourage thousands of people to consider switching to vehicles such as the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV.

In turn, this will support the UK’s thriving green vehicle sector, improve air quality in urban hotspots and help the government meet its emission-cutting targets.

Nottingham will use £6 million of funding to install 230 charge points and will offer ULEV owners discounted parking, as well as access to more than 13 miles of bus lanes along key routes across the city.

The investment will also pay for a new business support programme, letting local companies ‘try before they buy’.

The area is one of four lead UK cities and authorities to win part of the government funding in the Go Ultra Low Cities programme, run by the Department for Transport and the Office for Low Emission Vehicles.

Dave Fisher, Dealer Principal at the dealership in Nottingham Road, said: ‘We are committed to promoting the uptake of ultra low emission vehicles as we aim to bring low-cost motoring to residents of Nottingham, so we are delighted with this news.

The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV has transformed the plug-in market, which it leads with a significant

Paying for the cost of care and deliberate deprivation of assets Generally speaking, any person that has capital assets over £23,250 will be expected to meet the costs of their own care.

The exact cost of care is dependent upon the care home and its facilities, but it is not uncommon to see costs ranging from £500 to £1,000 per week.

Local authorities have a duty outlined in the Care Act 2014 to charge a resident for the costs of their care where the resident has the means to pay.

This means that all of the resident’s income will be taken into account and where the income is insufficient to meet the costs, capital will also be taken into account, until the minimum limit of £23,250 is reached.

At that time, what’s known as ‘tariff income’ will become relevant, which states that for every £250 of capital a resident may have, they will need to contribute an extra £1 per week to the costs of their care, in addition to their income.

Once the minimum level of £14,250 in capital is reached, the resident

will still continue to have all of their income taken into account, but capital will no longer be assessed.

It is an ever-increasing concern for most people about their assets and how to protect these for their children or other relatives We get many people stating that they have spent years working to provide for their family and they do not want all of this taken up in care fees. We are often asked whether it is possible to transfer or give away assets (most often property) and continue to have use of the asset, such as by living in the property.

Transferring an asset to say a son or daughter is in an attempt to avoid them being included in an assessment for care costs and is known as ‘deliberate deprivation of assets’ and it is something that any local authority is familiar with.

In order to prove that deliberate deprivation of assets has taken place, the local authority will need to show that avoiding the charge was a significant motivation.

This can be illustrated by the timing of the transfer and whether the resident had, at the time, a reasonable expectation that

they may require local authority assistance to meet care costs in the future.

If the local authority can prove that a resident has deliberately deprived themselves of an asset to avoid care home fees, under such circumstances they are able to take the following action:

- Treat the resident as still retaining the asset that has been given away.

- Recover the value of the asset from the person receiving the transfer Initiate proceedings to declare the resident bankrupt, which can mean that any transactions can be set aside.

Taking the above into consideration, it is not in every case that there is a deliberate deprivation of assets every time a transfer has been made.

Every case must be judged on its own facts and an action that could be considered to be a deliberate deprivation in one case may not be in another. All will depend on circumstances, intention and quite importantly, timing.

A new Regeneration Strategy aimed at bringing jobs and housing to Nottingham’s local neighbourhoods has been launched by Nottingham City Council. The strategy provides a pathway to improving the areas of the city which the majority of Nottingham residents call home.

Sustainable job creation, support for small businesses, building homes and great community spaces are at the heart of the plan, and maintaining investment for these areas even in the face of deep cuts to local authority funding is key. It is hoped this approach will better support more traditionally disadvantaged citizens, such as young people with few qualifications, over-50s who are out of work and lone parents.

Councillor Graham Chapman said: “It is vital that we continue to prioritise the well-being of the communities we serve, even in the face of drastic budget cuts from central government. We believe in creating better employment, housing and public spaces for

Nottingham’s neighbourhoods and allowing citizens to benefit from a higher quality of life through supporting small business, regenerating homes, parks and shopping areas and tackling social exclusion. Everyone who lives in Nottingham should benefit from its economic successes.”

The Neighbourhood Regeneration Strategy 2016 is a roadmap to maximise the impact of limited funding in challenging times. Like other UK cities, Nottingham has productivity gaps, but believes that the prospects of local people can be improved through education, training and improving housing and community spaces.

Some of the activity contained within the strategy concerns local businesses. A key source of wealth and job creation, they also provide valuable goods and services for people.

The Neighbourhood Regeneration Strategy will support this area through measures including...

- Putting in place action plans and funding for specific local areas.

- Investing in Small to Medium Enterprises (SMEs) with skilled labour and enhanced infrastructure.

- Providing £500,000 per area to Clifton and Bulwell to improve retail facilities and regenerate trade.

Over the next five years, 2,500 homes affordable for Nottingham people to buy or rent will be created in partnership with Nottingham City Homes, with 100 bungalows built in neighbourhoods to allow local people to stay in their communities. Where land is not council-owned, planning powers will be used to ensure appropriate development.

Nottingham Energy Partnership has installed cavity wall and loft insulation in thousands of homes in the owned and private rented sector. Robin Hood Energy, the first supply company wholly owned by a local authority, will continue to tackle fuel poverty by selling energy at the lowest possible price to

Nottingham residents on a not-for-profit basis and has just launched a SMART-metered, pay-as-you-go tariff to reduce costs for citizens who most need it

The Greener HousiNG roll out has continued beyond Clifton with £2.7m in the Green Deal Communities Fund being used alongside further ECO funding

Improving public spaces and community access to them via enhanced transport are key aims.

Over £14 million in secured funding will be invested in more than 60 local parks and open spaces, outdoor gyms and trim trails. Nottingham is now fourth in the country for the number of Green Flags awarded to its outdoor spaces

Nottingham City Council’s approach is based around early intervention, aimed at tackling the factors that cause social exclusion, rather reactively repairing the damage it causes.

New focus on local neighbourhoods to bring business and jobs

Residents across Nottingham have been receiving Household Enquiry Forms through the post from Nottingham City Council over the last few days as part of the process of registering to vote. The Household Enquiry Forms (HEFs) have been sent to every household to show residents who is currently registered at their address and ask them to confirm or update the details by responding to the form.

Responding to the HEF is a legal requirement as the electoral registration officer needs the information to be able to publish a complete and accurate Electoral Register on 1 December each year. Anyone not responding to the form could be fined up to £1,000.

People can respond to the form by using one of the following options:

- Visiting the following website householdresponse.com/Nottingham

- Calling Electoral Services on 0115 8764111

- Returning the form by post

In addition to this, if there are no changes to make, responses can be made by:

- Calling 0800 197 9871, which is an automated service

- Texting NOCHANGE followed by your security code to 80212

The security codes provided on each HEF need to be provided online or by phone.

Sarah Wilson, electoral services manager at the City Council said: “Responding is quick and easy and I’d advise people do it as soon as possible. The electoral registration officer is required to send reminders or arrange a personal visit to households who do not respond. This process can be very costly, so we encourage citizens to respond early to keep the cost down.

“Once details on their HEF are confirmed as correct, you don’t have to do anything further. Any people added to a HEF will receive an additional form called an Invitation to Register (ITR) which they will need to complete by providing their date of birth and national insurance number.”

Completing the Invitation to Register will:

- Allow you to be able to vote

- Improve your credit rating

- Make it easier to access council services

- Help you avoid a fine of £80

Any students living in Nottingham also need to respond to the Household Enquiry Form and Invitation to Register.

As a student you can register at both your home and term-time addresses. Registering in Nottingham not only enables you to vote here, but also ensures you have access to council services.

Clifton residents urged to respond to Household Enquiry Forms

14 GARDENING Leaflet deliveries starting from just £25 per thousand

The first thing you get when you have a lawn treatment done by Prograss - your local and independent lawncare company - is a full visual inspection of your lawn.

During this inspection, the qualified, experienced lawn operator will determine which product to apply and at what rate it needs to be applied to maximise the effect.

He will also analyse any other issues the lawn may have, such as weeds, disease and moss - and take appropriate measures to deal with these.

He will then return to his van and carefully measure out the products and take his time applying them to your lawn with great care and attention to detail.

Prograss lawn operators are trained that taking your time and being careful is the most important thing when applying the top-quality products that Prograss use.

Mistakes are only made when this process is done without care and rushed.

For example if a fertiliser is to be applied at 30g per m2 and the operator mistakenly either overfeeds or misses some, then the results will be poor and in some cases disastrous.

Prograss use only the best fertiliser spreaders and knapsack sprayers - and they are calibrated to distribute 50% of the required rate. The lawn is then done twice carefully which greatly reduces the risk of error.

Prograss also use only the highest quality fertilisers which have the lowest scorch risk - plus are child and pet-friendly - and are designed to last well into the time that the next treatment is due.

Their weed control and moss products are as environmentally friendly as possible and are applied at the safest dilution rate to reduce the risk of affecting anything else in the garden.

A final but important touch is the operator using a petrol blower to remove any surplus product from surrounding patios, steps or driveways to avoid the chance of any staining. Prograss use the same thorough principles and care when doing the other important mechanical lawncare treatments, which are aeration and scarification.

If you would like your lawn treated Prograss style, contact us to book a free, no-obligation lawn health check and quote on 01949 837367 or email [email protected]. You can also log onto pro-grass.com.

To get two tickets for Thursday 27th October, which includes complementary food and drink and seat reservation in the vigorous party tent, answer the question below. Send your entries to Oktoberfest Competition, 1a Blake Road, West Bridgford, Nottingham, NG2 5JJ. You can also enter via nottinghamlocalnews.com. The closing date is Friday 30th September 2016. You must be aged over 18 to enter.

No longer is Oktoberfest something you have to head for Germany to experience. This year, the Oktoberfest in Nottingham has gone especially Oktoberfest-mad. The biggest event, with a 2,000-seater tent, starts off with a hop-soaked five days at the Forest Recreation Ground from 26th to 30th October 2016, with so much beer, food and music that it's just like being in Munich.

Sunday is a family day, complete with bratwurst-centred lunch options. The tunes are courtesy of real Bavarian bands flown in from southern Germany and promising to have you dancing on the tables. Get a table and reserve the best seats. A package with food, beer and seat reservation can be purchased for only £34-£39.

Entrance is free every day, except £5 on the Saturday. For tickets visit nottingham-oktoberfest.co.uk, email [email protected], or call 020 3239 1408.

The’ Coupe de la Jeunesse’ is a Europe-wide rowing event for top level junior rowers not competing at the World Championships in Rotterdam in August.

This year it took place in Poznan in Poland and was raced over the Olympic distance of 2,000m.

Team GB were overall winners as 51 boys and girls all won at least one medal.

Local residents Matt Haywood and Sam Champion, of Nottingham Rowing Club, coached by Nicola Benavente, returned with two silver medals, losing out to a fast Swiss double scull.

The boys join four other Nottingham Rowing Club girls who gained rowing Team GB colours when selected for the Anglo-French match.

More international honours are expected for the club when the full Rotterdam team is published.

20 SPORT The latest news is online @Nottslocalnews

Notts Athletic Club’s Louis O’Connor is the fastest under-20 runner in the East Midlands over a 400-metre distance.

The 18-year-old from Clifton, who attends Rushcliffe School in West Bridgford, also ranks second across the Midlands and is 22nd in Great Britain.

Louis puts his success down to months of hard work and the great coaching down at the club.

The season also saw him compete in the much-acclaimed English

Schools Championships at Gateshead, which is recognised as the first stepping stone to more senior competitions.

This competition is the fourth-largest sporting event in the world.

Louis successfully made it to the 400-metre Senior Boys final, but frustratingly lost out on the medal places by one tenth of a second, missing out on a national vest.

The season has seen him compete in the British Athletics League against well-known senior athletes.

At the last meeting of the season, Louis registered a personal-best time of 48.85.

He also moved up to fifth in the East Midlands for the 200m.

The two distances work hand in hand as a gauge to an athletes speed and endurance.

Moving forward, Louis’ future ambitions are to win for Nottingham Trent University in the 2017 British University Championships and to secure his first England vest.

Plans are being made for him to hopefully be able to train at Loughborough University from September, with more experienced athletes who already compete for Great Britain and have come through the same pathway.

Louis says that he would strongly recommend anyone city based thinking of taking up athletics to contact Notts AC.

The club has great facilities and offer coaching for all age groups.

Clifton teenager Louis O’Connor is topping the athlete rankings
