CLIMATE CHANGE: A SYSTEMIC RISK

Page 2: Climate Change as a Systemic Risk

Climate Change causes risks not seen before• North Atlantic

storm spans Atlantic Ocean, coast to coast, March 2013

Energy production and consumption is necessary for the modern society• The energy

consumption is mainly based on the fossil fuels release greenhouse gases when burnt

• Figure illustrates that the share of low- or no-carbon energy sources is still small.

Greenhouse effect is accelerating• The increasing

ammount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere reflects the heat back to the earth.

• The reflection is 1% stronger than it was during the pre-industrial era.

IPCC: "Warming of the climate system is unequivocal"

• Annual changes occur but the warming trend is clear.

The Temperature has been rising also during the last milleniums• Climate Change is

a natural and constant phenomena

• The recent warming however, is not natural but antropogenic, a human made

Video 2.

"Human influence on the climate system is clear.”• Without more mitigation,

global mean surface temperature might increase by 3-4°C over the 21st century.

• "New GHG emissions will imply continued warming".

• “Limiting climate change will require substantial and sustained reductions of greenhouse gas emissions"

“Warming increase the likelihood of severe, pervasive, and irreversibleimpacts” (IPCC)• Climate Change

causes safety risks and food shortages in the most vulnerable places

• "Changes in climate have already caused impacts on natural and human systems on all continents and across the oceans."

Climate Change causes huge economic threats• Insurance

companies are already looking at climate change as the extreme weather conditions are increasing by the number and effect.
