SO WHAT HAVE WE ACTUALLY COVERED?

Three Main Climate Types:

• Hot (Equatorial, Desert, Savanna)

• Temperate (Cool Temperate, Warm Temperate)

• Cold (Boreal, Tundra)

Factors Influencing Climate:

• Latitude

• Distance from Sea

• Prevailing Winds

• Aspect

• Altitude

SO WHAT HAVE WE ACTUALLY COVERED?

• We have studied an example of a Hot Climate: The Sahara Desert

• Under that we have also examined the process of Desertification in the Sahel

• When we examined Desertification we also examined the process of Irrigation specifically looking at the Aswan Dam Project in Egypt

So where to now?

• We must now look at a Temperate Climate region and a Cold Climate region

• First up: the Temperate Climate region (we are going to examine the Mediterranean regions for this)

TEMPERATE CLIMATES

Mediterranean Lands: Between 30 and 40 Degrees (see figure 1 page 103) On Western side of landmasses Hot Summers: due to dry trade winds Mild Winters: prevailing south-westerly winds

Plant Adaptation: Evergreen Trees: Small waxy leaves or sharp thorns that don’t lose moisture through

transpiration (the loss of moisture through the leaves or bark of a pant) Trees such as the cork oak and olive have thick protective bark which help

to stop heat getting in or moisture escaping through transpiration Long tap roots reach for underground water (key to avoiding summer

droughts)

TEMPERATE CLIMATES - TOURISM

Pair Work!

With the person beside you come up with three points that would explain how the climate in the Mediterranean region impacts tourism?
