Areas of FocusQuestions:• How is climate different than weather?• How is a climate region determined?• How does global location play a role in climate?• How does climate affect patterns of human

settlement?

Page 3: Climate Patterns

Climate vs. Weather: What is the difference?

Weather• The condition of the atmosphere at a given time and

place. • What it is like outside right now.

Climate• The weather conditions in an area over a long

period of time.

Page 4: Climate Patterns

Climographs • What exactly is a pattern of weather?– Yearly temperatures and

precipitation levels are measured and tracked to determine a particular pattern of weather in an area

A climograph, like the three displayed above shows both temperature and rainfall

per month. What can you tell about these three

locations based on the climographs? What do you notice about the location of

the three cities? Why do you think differences exist?

• What type of map is this? What can it be used for?

• Climate patterns vary across the globe. You will read the handout on climate and complete Cornell notes and the graphic organizer on the back to better understand the essential question— What factors influence climate patterns across the globe?

Page 6: Climate Patterns

Note Taking Techniques• Cornell notes

– Notice the essential question at the top. Your notes should be focused on gathering evidence to answer that question

– You will use the right side to take notes

– You will use the left side to write questions about your notes

– We will do the first part together

Graphic Organizer

• You may work with a partner to complete the graphic organizer on your own.

• You will have 10 minutes!
