Multiplying Multiples of Ten: Climb the Ladder
Title: Climb the LadderDay One: Content Development Additional Game
Grade Level: 2nd-3rd
Resources for Lesson: High Yield Routines:Origo Fundamentals: Green Level
Lesson: Multiply single digit numbers by multiples of ten by using known facts and understanding of place value.
Guiding (Focus) Question: How can I use my understanding of place value to multiply single digits by multiples of ten?
Unit Learning Targets: Students will use their understanding of place value to multiply single digit numbers by multiples of ten.
Success Criteria: I can multiply single digit numbers by multiples of 10 and discuss the strategy I used with my partner and the class.
Mathematical Practices1. Make sense of problems and
persevere in solving them.2. Reason abstractly and
quantitatively.3. Construct viable arguments
and critique the reasoning of others.
4. Model with mathematics5. Use appropriate tools
strategically.6. Attend to precision.7. Look for and make use of
structure.8. Look for and express regularity
in repeated reasoning
Content Standards (Clusters)3.OA.A Represent and solve problems involving multiplication and division.
3.OA.B Understand properties of multiplication and the relationship between multiplication and division....
3.OA.C Multiply and divide within 100.

Content Objectives: (Student Friendly)I can use strategies to mentally multiply single digit multiples of ten.
Language Objectives:(Throughout unit make sure all four language modalities, reading, writing, speaking and listening are addressed)I can discuss my moves and combinations with my partner.I can share my strategies for multiplying single digit

boardStudent Engagement: Leadership How will this lesson develop leadership skills for our migrant students? 2. I speak and listen well to others.
Strategies to develop leadership skills: Students will be working in pairs to play the game. Grouping strategies should be carefully used to allow students the best opportunity
Warm Up: (10 Minutes) High Yield Routines Mystery Number (My number is a three digit number. If you count by tens you will land on my number.
My number is less than 200 but more than 100. If you multiply a single digit number times 90 you will know my number).
What is my number? 180Content Development: (10 minutes)
1. Write 4x60 on the board. Ask students to explain a strategy for figuring it out. (pair share) (students may say that 60 is 6 tens, and 4x6 is 24 and 24 tens equals 240)
2. Write out other examples such as 6x30, 5x50 etc.3. Explain the rules of the game- the first player selects 2 numeral cards and 1
multiplication card. The player chooses which numeral card to multiply with the multiplication card and colors in the correct product on one of the ladders. The second player then has a turn. The player that fills in all the spaces on one ladder first is the winner.
4. Play the game several times with a partner
Notes: Crayons or colored pencils could be used to color in the spaces on the ladder.
Game Activity: (30 minutes)1. Climb the Ladder game-page 40 Green Fundamentals book2. Play the game several times with a partner3. During the game look for students that only need one number to complete
the ladder. Ask the student which combination they need in order to win. Reflection:
1. Ask students which numbers on the ladder are easiest to get. Allow small groups to discuss this question and then share out.
2. There are 3 numbers that can be achieved with four different combinations. (120, 180, 240
Review and Assessment:Have students solve the problem 4x70. Have students solve the problem and draw or describe the problem and their answer using words and pictures.

Day Two: Problem Solving (Analyzing Word Problems Involving Multiplication)
Title: Analyzing Word Problems Involving MultiplicationDay Two: Problem Solving
Grade Level: 2nd-3rd
Resources for Lesson: High Yield Routines:Illustrative Math Task: Analyzing word problems involving multiplication
Lesson: Analyze different contexts in which multiplication is appropriate. Explain your thinking and solve each problem.
Guiding (Focus) Question: How can we decide if word problems can be solved by using multiplication?
Unit Learning Targets: Decide if multiplication can be used to solve four word problems, explain your thinking, and solve the problems.
Success Criteria: I can work as a team to analyze word problems and decide how multiplication can be used to solve the problems. I can discuss and describe my reasoning using words and pictures.
Mathematical Practices1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively.3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.4. Model with mathematics.5. Use appropriate tools strategically.6. Attend to precision.7. Look for and make use of structure.8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning
Content Standards3.OA.A Represent and solve problems involving multiplication and division.
3.OA.B Understand properties of multiplication and the relationship between multiplication and division....
3.OA.C Multiply and divide within 100.
Time for Lesson:Warm Up: 10 MinutesContent Development: 20 MinutesProblem Solving: 20 MinutesReflection: 10 Minutes
Content Objectives: (Student Friendly)I can discuss, solve, and explain four different word problems using my knowledge of multiplication.
Language Objectives:(Throughout unit make sure all four language modalities, reading, writing, speaking and listening are addressed)I can work with my team to discuss and record our thinking and reasoning for the four word problems.

Student Engagement: Leadership How will this lesson develop leadership skills for our migrant students? 6. I am a problem-solver and critical thinker.
Strategies to develop leadership skills: Small group work Collaboration Think, pair, share Elbow partners
Warm Up: (High Yield Routines) (10 Minutes)Alike and Different Routine from High Yield Routines
In connection with the game from the previous day, as students to brainstorm ways that the numbers 100, 1000 are alike and different.
This could be done using a list method, or a graphic organizer such as a box and T chart Share ideas generated from groups of students
Content Development: 1. Discuss with students how they know when to multiply when solving word
problems. Generate student responses. What are some scenarios that help us know when we need to multiply?
2. Discuss question a. together as a class and analyze the question. What do we know? What is the question asking us? How can we model our thinking?
Notes:
Problem Solving Activity: 1. Inform small groups of students that they need to decide if the problems
can be solved using multiplication. They will also explain their thinking! 2. Groups of students will have time to solve the problems and use chart
paper to model how the problem is solved, using words and pictures.
Reflection:1. Have groups share their work and explain
their reasoning for each question. Can it be solved with multiplication and how can your work show this thinking?
2. Share out!
Review and Assessment:
Home School Connection
Students Continue to play the game at home with their family. Parents can sign the home school connection page and send it back to school along with the numeral and multiplication cards.
Materials to Send Home:
Students will be using game boards made from copy paper and the numeral and multiplication cards are on card stock!
