They often play critically important roles in the bedside teaching mission of the College, and may also participate in clinical research. Scholarly work in any of these areas is encouraged but is not required.”

For positions with significant expectations for teaching, evidence of high quality teaching will be required.”

Should be recognized authorities in the candidate’s field and may be from inside or outside of UAMS

Should NOT have employed you or trained you (e.g., not someone who has been your “boss” or your teacher/mentor)

Should clearly have reviewed your CV or portfolio, and have detailed comments

Ideally, one or two of these letters should be written by authorities outside of your own department, giving supportive evidence about your local reputation

Obtaining Letters Provide your Department Chair with a list of

names and contact information; Chair may suggest additional authors of letters

Solicit more letters than you need to ensure you get three great letters back in time

Additional letters may be a good idea if they add significant information or an importantly different perspective on your contributions. These may be from inside UAMS or outside.

How can you help to assure your own success?

Know the rules! Study the companion guide http://medicine.uams.edu/faculty/promotion-and-tenure/for-com-pt-committee/ Talk to P&T committee chair in department or faculty

affairs representative before finalizing your initial appointment or if you have unresolved concerns.

Get a mentor. Attend P&T workshops and database trainings. Prepare a concise, neat, well-organized packet that makes

it easy for the reviewer to find support that you have met criteria.
