WHEELWRIGHT, UPHOLSTERER, JUSTICE OF THE PEACE –George Higgins, was born in Ireland and enlisted when he was34 in the 153rd Infantry at the end of August 1862. Theregiment didn’t muster until October. The 153rd was first stationed at Alexandria as provost guard, and during most of the year 1863, did garrison and guard dutyabout the capital. It was then transferred to the Departmentof the Gulf, where it was part of the Red River Campaign inLouisiana in 1864. Later that year they returned to Virginiawhere they lost 10 men at Opequan and 8 men at Cedar Creek.Although the regiment continued to serve in the ShenandoahValley until April 1865, George was not with them the entireway. He was discharged on a surgeon’s order for disabilityfrom the Ladies Home Hospital in New York City on May 2,1865.The 153rd moved with Dwight's Division back to Washington, where it participated in the Grand Review in May 1865. In Julyit sailed for Savannah, GA. While stationed there it won theesteem and respect of the citizens by the gentlemanly conductof its officers and men.Civil War pension records show Georgereceived an Invalid's Pension June 5, 1873, for his service. Hiswife, Helen M. Higgins, received a widow’s pension after hisdeath on August 9, 1897.George is buried on the west side of the protestant cemeteryin Ellenburg Corners. There is no stone although the index cardshows he is buried there.
FATHER, SON AND 3 REGIMENTS - On December 2,
1863, Smith Lasell went to Malone and enlisted in the
14th Heavy Artillery as a private with unassigned
duties to serve 3 years. He spent Christmas with his
family and returned to Malone to the muster on
January 4, 1864. On March 4, 1864, he was transferred
to the 13th Artillery.
His son, Merrill Gilbert Lasell, followed Smith to war
on September 2 1864, when he enlisted in the 6th
Artillery in Chateaugay and then went home to
Ellenburg until the muster on September 9. The next
year on June 28, 1865, he mustered out with his
company at Petersburg, VA.
On June 27, 1865, Smith was transferred to his son's
6th Artillery. According to the Muster Roll Abstracts,
he was sick in hospital in Norfolk, VA in 1865. The NY
Adjutant General's Rosters say he deserted on July
24, 1865 - who knows? Maybe the paperwork got lost
in the shuffle. Both men are buried at Sheldon Hill
Cemetery in Ellenburg.
Merrill and Smith are mentioned on pages 142, 145
and 520 of our book.
