the lignro cf a man appeared at the open door of the bedroom, and Leonard saw that the intruder was carrying his shoes in his hand.
Stocking feet on the dampened metallic matting would simplify matters immensely, and the second signal went to Helen with no uncertain ring.
Cautiously and feeling his way with ais free band the robber crept across to cbe safe, and when tho outstretched hand came in contact with the damp metal Leonard knew that the moment had arrived.
With one touch he sent the third signal to Helen and with another flooded the room with a glare of light from half a dozen electric lamps. The burglar gasped, dropped his shoes and fell back against the safe with many emotions struggling for simultaneous expression on his unheautifal face. Leonard sat up in bed with his hand still under tho pillow and strove to be decently calm and matter of fact.
"Good evening," he said hospitably.
DESPONDENT WOMEN
THE constantly recurring monthly suffering gives women the blues!
How hopeless the future appears, month after month the same siege with menstrual pain!
Comparatively few women understand that excessive pain indicates ill-health, or some serious derangement of the feminine organs.
A million women have been helped by Mrs. Pinkham. Read what two of them say.
MRS. LIZZIE COLEMAN, ol Wayland, N. Y., writes: " D E A R MRS. PINKHAM—For years I suffered with painful
menstruation and falling of womb. The bearing-down pains in my back and hips were dreadful. I could not stand for more than five minutes at a time when menstruation began. But thanks to Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound, my sufferings are now I a tiling of trie past. I shall glaflly recommend your medicines to all friends."
Miss C. D. MORRIS, 3 Louisburg | Square, Boston, Mass., writes:
" D E A R MRS. PINKHAM—I have I been using Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound and it has helped me wonderfully. I was troubled with headache, backache and that weak and tired feeling. I cannot say enough in praise of your medicine for it has done me so much good. I shall recommend it to all my friends who suffer."
Despondency is » disease. Nervousness and •nappishness come with it. "Will power won't overcome it . The feminine organs are connected by netves with the brain and all parts of the body. These organs must be healthy or th* mind ia not healthy.
All low-spirited or suffering; women may write to Mrs. Piak> kam at Lynn, Mass.* and reeeive her adrko free of IWt<

" I tboM'ht you'd bo sensible. Now give me your weapons, and we'll go up stairs."
But the burglar had no weapons, and, what seemed still more singular, no tools. Leonard marveled greatly thereat, but hi-: guest explained:
" I was jist gittin de lay ' f de land, d'ye s-e? No use bringin de wholo machine ship 'f der wasn't goin to be no chance to use i t . "
"But do you usually go unarmed?" "C'.ur=p %ve does," replied tho bur
glar, w?.;h fine irony. "Us coves ain't no bloody sluggers. Wot we wants is do swag, tfec';''
Leonard promptly made a note of the first fact in his diagnosis and sent Helen the fourth and last signal.
"Now, then, Mr."— "Bi t t s , " said tho burglar. "Mr. Bitts, come with rue, and
we'll take a few notes tonight, if you don't mind."

and wLeekd out an easy chair for tho burglar, "cMr, down and make yourself comfortable," he said. "Do you smoke':"
Mr. Bitts admitted the fact, and Leonard passed tho cigar stand and settled himself at his writing table. Then and there began an inquest into criminal methods and motives the like of which no courtroom has ever witnessed, and through it all the burglar reclined lazily in the easy chair, smoking contentedly and talking as freely as any investigator, however curious, could wish.
For an hour Leonard's pen kept even pace with his queries, but after that the talk became less investigative on Ike part of tho host and slightly more inquisitive on that of the guest.
As an unlettered craftsman of the guild felonious, knowing less than nothing of things literary, Bitts was naturally curious to acquaint himself somewhat with the doings of the strange world into which ho had stumbled, and his ignorance was so naive that Leonard, enthusiastic to the lips on the subject of his calling, was at some pains to explain his work, its methods, its difficulties and its achievements.
It was positively refreshing to pour such a stream of information into a perfectly vacuous mind, with the assurance that it could never find its way out again, and Leonard, warming to his work, went into details with the minuteness which his auditor's powers of comprehension seemed to demand.
Bitts listened as a dull man might, with apparent interest when he could understand and with respectful attention when the matter grew abstruse, but his questions were always fruitful, and Leonard encouraged them as giving him a still deeper ing^ht into the character of the type burglarious.
Hence, what with acute enthusiasm on one hand and patient, if somewhat ungrasping, attention on the other, the hall clock struck 1 before Leonard realized that what he desired to accomplish needed not to bo wrought out in a single sitting. Wherefore he arose and mado amends.
"By Jove! That's 1 o'clock. I owe you an apology for keeping yon up so late, though I presume in your profession you're used to bad hours. Come with me and I'll show you where you are to sleep."
He led Bitts to a bedroom at tho end of the corridor, touching electric pushes for additional light as he went along.
"You'l l find everything comfortable and cozy, I think, Mr. Bitts. Yon see, we've been expecting you for several days. Make yourself quite at home, and consider yourself for the time being a member of the family. Only dou-4 try to get away. I shan't lock the door, and, as yon see, the windows are protected only by fly screens, hut I assure you you could never get out of here alivo without my help. Good night. Touch this button when yon want to pnt out the l ights."
The guest Eaid MGooa iiiRht," anil Leonard thought he surprised the simulacrum of a satirical grin on tho man's face as he closed thedoor. A minute later be was giving Helen a circumstantial account of what had befallen.
" I t worked like a charm from beginning to end, he continued, with pardonable pride. "So hitches, no danger, no violence, though I did haye to give him a mild shock, just to illustrate the completeness of the th ing ."
"Ob, Harvey! You didn't hurt him, did you?"
"Of course no t . He's too flue a specimen to be spoiled in the taking."
"And what arrangements did you make With him?"
' ' Just what we planned. We've had pur first seance, «ud he is to be' cur guect until I 'm through investigating hint. After that he, i* to be free to go as he came.J'
"Ttaauk goodness, I 'm glad it's all over!'- exclaimed Helen cratefally, and with this the matter rested for what was left of that eventful might

He fell into a chair and hid his face. " I don't have to guess. I know," ho groan, d. "Ho was no more a burglar than I am. It was that villain Macar-tb.ur of Tho Beam. Has the mail come:''
It bad, and Helen found the paper with trembling lingers. There it was uudir staring headlines, with every detail elaborated and every idiosyncrasy, down to a minute description of the burglar trap, made the most of with true journalistic thrift not un-minvded with sardonic humor.
Hi leu read it aloud with tears in her voice. Leonard listened and made no sign.
"Isn ' t it too despicably heartless!" she. ciiid at tho end, and Leonard had to smile in spite of his chagrin.
" I fancy that depends upon the point of view, but we'll take that ground in evi ning up things with Mr. Macarthur. On the other hand, I'm not so sure he hasn't served my turn without meaning to. He will make a fairiy good proxy burglar in the absence cf the real thing."
Lienard's figure of speech was mild, but his vengeance was ample. When the new novel appeared, it was speedily discovered that a certain young Iri.-hman on The Sunday Ream had posed as a model for tho burglar therein.
Leonard had caught the inspiration of the moment-, and tho result was a beautiful bit of literary caricature so true to the iifo that he who ran might read and lecognize the original. Whereupon Macarthur was rechristened "Bitts. '" and to this day there aro those who beiievo he is a reformed burglar.
