Once the game started,Griffin ignored the ankle issue and attacked the Grizzlies in the same reckless manner thathas been his trademark since he came into the league. But he played only 20 minutes -- sixin the second half -- and finished with four points, five rebounds and five assists. He also gota technical foul from referee Jason Phillips just three minutes into the game after scoring ona fastbreak layup and shoving center Marc Gasol's arm. Gasol finished with 21 points andeight rebounds in a foul-plagued 31 1/2 minutes. He picked up his fifth with 5:39 left in thethird quarter and still managed to be a factor in the fourth. ● IT’S THE LAW: “The Voice of the Clippers,” Ralph Lawler has seen his famous “Lawler’s Law”, which says that the team reaching 100 points first will win, go 52-5 in2012-13...“The Law” went 36-2 during the 2011-12 regular season....In games involving the Clippers since 1978, the team reaching 100 points first has won 1,944 timesin 2,107 games (92.3%).

On the overall perception of the Clippers:“They are a team, obviously, in the West that’s going to have to be dealt with. I look at them in the West as a legitimate team that could win it all. They are one of thedeepest teams, if not the deepest team, in the NBA. They have great veteran leaders. To me, the ultimate leader in Chris Paul. They have bigs who are athletic. They

Page 14: CLIPPERS PROBABLE STARTERSmedia.virbcdn.com/files/4c/FileItem-288154-53LACGameNotes.pdf · 2012-13 Regular Season Averages 2012-13 Regular Season Averages 2012-13 Regular Season Averages

rebound, defend. They definitely are a team that can win it.” -- Cavaliers head coach Byron Scott from Mar. 1, 2013

“I think the thing nobody talks about with the Clippers is how good they are defensively. Everyone sort of makes that comparison with Miami, you know, Miami’s a greatoffensive team and nobody talks about the defense. Same deal with the Clippers.” -- Pacers head coach Frank Vogel from Feb. 28, 2013

“They have shot blocking. They defend the paint very well. They’re number one in steals and points off turnovers. When you look at this team they have glamorous play-ers, but to me they’re a very blue collar team. I think that really is their calling card is that they’re tough.” -- 76ers head coach Doug Collins from Feb. 11, 2013

“I haven’t seen all the teams but they do have talent. They have athleticism. They have a lot stuff going for them. That’s why I said before the game that they’re the bestteam in the West, maybe the best team in the league right now.” -- Grizzlies head coach Lionel Hollins from Jan. 14, 2013

“They have a terrific team. Every year is a new year, but they’re good. They’re talented and they play together. They all accept their roles. They’re actually a fun teamto watch play, other than the dunks. They’re just a fun team to watch play the game.” -- Celtics head coach Doc Rivers from Dec. 27, 2012

On the play of MVP candidate Chris Paul:“He’s one of the best players we have in this league. The number one point guard we have in this league.” -- Heat superstar LeBron James from Feb. 17, 2013

“Obvously, Chris Paul’s one of the best point gaurds in the league and ever. He’s such a great competitor and leader and he just knows how to make the right plays andsay the right things to his team. Just coaching him in the All-Star Game last season, it was a thrill just to be around him for a few days.” -- Thunder head coach ScottBrooks from Jan. 22, 2013

“He’s a born leader. You just see it. It’s innate. He was born with it, the ability to push guys and push himself. He has a standard that he keeps for himself and he pusheshis guys to that standard. Unbelievable ability to control the tempo of the game and create havoc on both ends. It’s special.” -- Magic head coach Jacques Vaughn fromJan. 12, 2013

“I think Chris Paul right now, I know this might sound crazy, I think he’s the defensive player of the year. I mean, he’s an incredible defender.” -- Nuggets head coachGeorge Karl from Dec. 25, 2012

On three-time All-Star Blake Griffin’s overall game:“He’s a helluva player. He’s got an edge to him. He’s physical. He’s competitive. He works on weaker parts of his game just like all good players do. He improves year-to-year. He’s special that’s why he’s an All-Star. He’s just going to get better. He hasn’t even tapped what he’s going to be two years from now, three years from now.”-- Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich from Mar. 29, 2013

“Blake’s good. He’s athletic. He can play as a post player. The guy is a workaholic. He’s got a great work ethic and he’s a good person, so he’s always going to get bet-ter because he soaks it up and listens.” -- Grizzlies All-Star Zach Randolph from Feb. 15, 2013

“He’s really improved on his passing out of the post. He’s almost daring you to double-team him now... He’s really done a great job of reading the defenses, seeing whatteams are doing to him, seeing which way the double-teams are coming from. He’s doing a heck of a job of reading that and that’s part of his growth.” -- Raptors headcoach Dwane Casey from Feb. 1, 2013

On the play of reserve guard Jamal Crawford:“I think [Crawford] is [Sixth Man of the Year]. J.R. Smith’s had a great year but everybody on his team got hurt so he got to start. But Jamal, he’s been playing like theSixth Man of the Year from the word ‘go.’” -- Lakers All-Star Kobe Bryant from Apr. 7, 2013

“Jamal Crawford, the guy is having an impact every single night. Everything that the Clippers have been able to accomplish this year, Jamal Crawford is right in the mid-dle. The way he has played, the way he has performed, the way he has battled. And it’s awfully tough to come off the bench and do that every night. It’s impressive.” --Warriors head coach Mark Jackson from Jan. 2, 2013

On the improvement of center DeAndre Jordan this season:“I just wonder what he did over the summer because when I watch him from the beginning of the year, he’s just different. He plays more confidently. He understandsdifferent parts of the game that he maybe didn’t in the past. He just thinks the game more than he ever did before. He’s not just a dunk guy.” -- Spurs head coach GreggPopovich from Mar. 29, 2013

“He’s much improved. He’s improved every year. Within their system, he’s a real factor and a real force. He rebounds, keeps balls alive. He’s a great roller, a lot of thelobs go to him. He’s a good defender and I just see gradual maturity and growth.” -- Mavericks head coach Rick Carlisle from Mar. 26, 2013

“We noticed it right away that he had an improved post-up game. He’s always been a guy that if you don’t get to him early in transition and they throw that ball up there, you’re going to be on a poster. But now they throw him the ball and he’s very productive down there and if you don’t scheme for him and plan for it in shoot-around hecan really take advantage of you.” -- Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra from Nov. 14, 2012

VINNY DEL NEGRO ● HEAD COACH

Vinny Del Negro completed his third season as head coach of the Los Angeles Clippers presiding over a team he has helped transform into one of themost exciting squads in the NBA. In five seasons as an NBA head coach, Del Negro owns a career regular season record of 210-184 (.533) and a play-off record of 8-15 (.348).Del Negro led the Clippers to the greatest season in franchise history in 2012-13, guiding the team to its first-ever Pacific Division title and a franchisebest 56-26 record en route to earning home court advantage in the 2013 Playoffs for just the second time since 1984. Del Negro was the Western Con-ference Coach of the Month in December as he lead the Clippers to a 16-0 month in the midst of a historic 17-game winning streak. This season, DelNegro became the fastest coach in Clippers history to win 100 games, needing just 184 games to accomplish the feat. Under Del Negro, the Clippersowned the best record in the NBA at the halfway mark at 32-9 and broke numberous team and franchise records.Del Negro’s success in 2012-13 came after a strong 2011-12 regular season marked a turning point in team history. After an offseason of roster changesand an abbreviated preseason, Del Negro’s Clippers surged to the team’s highest winning percentage in history followed by a stunning first round upsetagainst the Memphis Grizzlies in a playoff series that would go down as one of the NBA’s most exciting. In one of the NBA’s greatest playoff comebacks, game one saw the Clippers emerge from 21 points down at the start of the fourth quarter to win and tie the record for the largest comeback to start thefourth quarter in a playoff game. After a series of tightly contested games and key injuries to three starters (Chris Paul, Blake Griffin and Caron Butler), the Clippers finished off the Griz-zlies in a stunning game seven road victory in Memphis, making the Clippers the first team in NBA history to win games one and seven on the road ina first round playoff series. This also marked the franchise’s first game seven victory (1-2 all-time) and the team’s first-ever series win over a higher seededopponent. Although the Clippers would eventually fall to the top seeded San Antonio Spurs in the Conference Semi-Finals, Del Negro guided his teamto one of the most exciting seasons in franchise history.Del Negro’s contributions didn’t stop on the sidelines at the end of the postseason. During the 2012 offseason, Del Negro joined forces in a leadershiptriumvirate with team President Andy Roeser and Vice President of Basketball Operations Gary Sacks to jointly manage the summer’s transactions. During his first season with Los Angeles in 2010-11, Del Negro led a roster that began the season as the ninth youngest in the league and establishedthe Clippers as a fast-breaking, tenacious club that showcased relentless energy and potential by recording victories against every Division winner inthe NBA. Eight times in 2010-11, Del Negro started the youngest overall starting lineup in franchise history with an average age of 21.4 years. His em-phasis on defense was apparent as the Clippers jumped from 21st in the NBA in Defensive Field Goal Percentage in 2009-10 to 10th in Del Negro’s firstseason in Los Angeles. Under Del Negro’s leadership in 2010-11, the Clippers set the team record for most consecutive home victories, logging ninestraight wins at STAPLES Center from January 5th – January 31st, a stretch that included wins against the Denver Nuggets, Miami Heat and the Lak-ers. The 2010-11 campaign also marked the second time in three seasons that Del Negro coached the NBA Rookie of the Year, guiding Blake Griffin to a

historic rookie season just like he did with Chicago’s Derrick Rose during the 2008-09 campaign. It was the third time in NBA history that a head coachin his first season with a franchise has coached two different Rookies of the Year, and just the fourth time ever that a coach has had multiple Rookies ofthe Year in his first three seasons. Del Negro’s successful history of developing young talent is also evident in the early career success of Bulls draftpick Taj Gibson (26th overall selection in 2009 NBA Draft), who was named First Team All-Rookie under Del Negro, and Clippers guard Eric Bledsoe(18th overall selection in 2010 NBA Draft), named Second Team All-Rookie after last season.Del Negro joined the Clippers after having led the Chicago Bulls to two consecutive trips to the NBA Playoffs (2009 and 2010) after back-to-back 41-41(.500) seasons. The Bulls were eliminated in the first round of the 2010 Playoffs (1-4) by the Cleveland Cavaliers. Chicago played a memorable seven-game first round series (3-4) against the defending NBA Champion Boston Celtics in 2009 that many consider the best postseason series in NBA his-tory. Four of the seven games went into overtime, including a triple-overtime win in Game 6, a double-overtime win in Game 4 and an overtime win inGame 1.Del Negro joined a select list of coaches in NBA history with no prior coaching experience to lead his team to the playoffs in his first two seasons as anNBA head coach. (Billy Cunningham, Philadelphia - 1978 and 1979; Doug Collins, Chicago – 1987 and 1988; Larry Bird, Indiana – 1999 and 2000). Dur-ing a memorable stretch of the 2009-10 season, Del Negro led the Bulls to five consecutive victories on the road, all against teams with above .500 orbetter records (at Phoenix, at Houston, at San Antonio, at Oklahoma City and at New Orleans), which marked the first time in NBA history a team hadachieved that feat.Prior to his time with the Bulls, Del Negro served as Assistant General Manager of the Phoenix Suns during the 2007-08 campaign after a promotion

from his previous role of Director of Player Personnel, which he held for the 2006-07 season. Del Negro moved to the front office after working threeseasons (2003-06) as a color analyst for the Suns’ broadcast teams. His broadcast career also included stints as an analyst for ESPN’s “NBA Matchup”and as an analyst for the San Antonio Spurs. Del Negro retired from his 14-year professional playing career following the 2001-02 season. (12 NBA seasons and 2 seasons with Benetton Treviso

in the Italian A1 League). Over his 12-year NBA career, Del Negro averaged 9.1 points in 771 regular season games, while tallying 8.8 points in 54 play-off games. Del Negro was originally drafted by the Sacramento Kings in the second round (29th overall) of the 1988 NBA Draft. After spending two sea-sons in Sacramento, Del Negro signed with Benetton Treviso, where he averaged 25.4 points and 4.4 rebounds in 65 games over a two-year span(1990-92), leading the team to its first Italian League Championship in 1992 while being named playoff MVP. In 1992 Del Negro returned to the NBA,embarking on a six-season stint with the San Antonio Spurs (1992-98). During his time in San Antonio, Del Negro helped lead the Spurs to the playoffson five occasions including two Midwest Division titles, and still holds the team’s record for consecutive free throws made (50). He was named to SanAntonio’s 25th Anniversary Team as one of the top 25 players in Spurs history. After his time in San Antonio, Del Negro played two seasons with the Milwaukee Bucks (1998-00), one season with the Golden State Warriors (2000-01) and finished his career with two seasons in Phoenix (2000-02). Throughout his career, Del Negro played for some of the greatest coaches in NBAhistory including George Karl, Dick Motta and Gregg Popovich.Del Negro played four collegiate seasons at North Carolina State under the late Jim Valvano, averaging 9.1 points, 2.9 rebounds and 2.6 assists over

his career. He helped the Wolfpack to four consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, including back-to-back trips to the Elite Eight (1985 and 1986).He was also named the winner of the Everett Case Award as the MVP of the 1987 ACC Tournament, leading NC State to the tournament championship.Del Negro was named to the All-ACC First Team his senior season after tallying 15.9 points, 4.9 rebounds and 3.6 assists per game while shooting .515from the field and .839 from the free throw line. As a culmination to his career at North Carolina State, Del Negro had his jersey retired in 2001. VincentJoseph Del Negro was born on August 9, 1966 in Springfield, Massachusetts and attended Suffield Academy in Suffield, Connecticut. Del Negro wasinducted into the New England Basketball Hall of Fame in 2002 after leading Suffield to the 1983 and 1984 New England Championship. He had his#21 retired by the school in February, 2008.
