Clomipramine stops the stutter
Clomipramine has modest efficacy in severe stuuering and may be a useful allernative to haloperidol. the most effective established treatment for this disorder, say US re ... earchers.
In their study, clomipramine 50-250 mglday was compared with desipramine 50-250 mg/day in a crossover fashion in 17 psychialricaUy nonnal individuals with severe developmental stuttering; each treatment was administered for 5 weeks.
The mean rate of speech increased from 1.8 syllables/second during the pretreatment placebo phase. to 1.95 during treatment with desipramine and 2.3 during treatment with clomipramine.
Clomipramine was significantly superior to desipramine on 5110 self-report ratings: stuttering severity (on 2 scaJes), degree of preoccupation with stuttering, amount of energy spent resisting stuttering, and expectancy of stuttering behaviour.
Half of the study participants voluntarily continued to receive clomipramine after completion of the 10-week trial. and response was maintained over 12 months.
