“What potent blood hath modest May” - Ralph W. Emerson
Congratulations go to Dorothy Erwin for being chosen May Volunteer of the Month. As a St. Luke’s nurse, Dorothy has volunteered at the Siouxland Center for Active Generations since 2003, taking blood pressures. These Friday morning screenings have been a great service to our members; we are so thankful to our hospitals and Countryside for providing the nurses. Since joining the Center in 2007 Dorothy has enjoyed attending Talk Shows, the gift shop (she has brought and bought), the library (she likes to borrow and buy), and she is always interested in a good meal at either the coffee shop or the meal site. We are happy to recognize Dorothy as our recipient of the Palmer’s Olde Tyme Candy Shoppe Gift Certificate for May.
Are you “Too Old to Play?” Not if you follow the advice of the Administration of Aging and its theme for the 2012 Older Americans month of May. Older Americans are encouraged to “stay engaged, active and
involved in their own lives and in their communities.” The organization marks each month
of May to honor and recognize older Americans for the wide contribution they make in the world. The AoA month was established in 1963 by President John F. Kennedy and updated in 1980 by President Jimmy Carter. Our Siouxland Center for Active Generations echoes this celebration of Older American’s Month. Through nearly half a century this annual event encourages the nation to pay tribute in some way to older Americans.

Too Old To Play?
Every Spring, the Siouxland Center for Active Generations hosts a Volunteer Recognition Luncheon. This is our way of saying thanks for all you do to help us out. We have well over 200 volunteers who help us daily in a variety of ways. This year our party was held in March. Following a delicious lunch served by Chef Jeff and his staff, we were entertained by the West Middle Jazz Choir under
the direction of Jill Wigton, with accompaniment by Chris Miller. Marilyn Haller was recognized for her 939 volunteer hours, the most recorded by any of our members. We would like to thank all who helped make this a special day, but most importantly our volunteers, who are the heart of the Siouxland Center for Active Generations.
Volunteer luncheon
The Stop & Shop Gift Shop has many new items available. Among those
arrivals are embroidered dish towels, assorted candles, and several sets of dishes. Remember...every purchase made, benefits the Siouxland Center for Active Generations.
Gift Shop
The Siouxland Center for Active Generations will be closed on Monday, May 28, to recognize
Memorial Day. We wish you all a very safe and special day.

As If We Didn’t Know
A certain blush on cheeks; a sudden rise in nearby creeks are more than evident it’s true.
Kid’s light aircraft hover; then with wings that catch a breeze; it’s off they fly away.
Mowers are set to cut lawns, softball fields and soon novice golfers forget to replace divots on the well trimmed fairways, as if we didn’t know.
Dogs and cats begin to scamper or engage in fighting for it’s their great out-of-doors also 10 speed bikes cut corners across the “Quick Shop” parking lots while their parents sigh a blessing for this sort of play.
These are the times when sunny days come our way as an entrée with springtime’s bright tiara on the ‘velvet cushion’ of the month of May!

Drums Needed for Drum Circles
Do you have a bongo, congo or other hand drum you could
donate to the Siouxland Center for Active Generations? We are looking for enough drums to start a drum circle program. Other percussion instruments also would be appreciated.
Drum circles are groups that get together to share rhythm and get in tune with each other and themselves. Drum circles are for the hidden musician inside us.
Let Kerry know if you have an instrument or would be interested in joining a drum circle at the Center.
Shred-tastic! Check out the details of our second shredding event to be held at the Siouxland Center for Active Generations from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Monday, May 14. This event is sponsored by Siouxland Aging Services; you may call them at (712) 279-6900 if you have any questions.

1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper2 teaspoons sugar6 oz. shredded cheddar cheese2 large egg whites4 -4 1/2 cups flour3/4 cup water
Combine the (2/3 cup) water, yeast, and sugar. Let stand 10 minutes or until foamy. Stir in egg whites, the (3/4 cup) water, salt, and red pepper. Using a wooden spoon, beat in the cheese and then flour, one cup at a time, to make a soft dough.
Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for 6-8 minutes, until smooth and elastic, adding only as much remaining flour as needed. Transfer the dough to a large buttered bowl, cover loosely and let rise in a warm place for 45-115 minutes or until doubled.
Punch down, divide in half, cover and let rest 10 minutes. Put in pans or loose on baking sheet and let rise 30-45 minutes or until doubled.
Bake in a 350 degree oven for 30-40 minutes or until golden brown (cover if browning too quickly). Bread will sound hollow when tapped on the bottom. Turn out on wire rack to cool. Spread with the following bacon jam (optional).

Curtains Up Drama Group We had fun preparing for
our skit “No Frills Airways” for the
April birthday party. Thank you to our
special performers B.J. Heitzman & Arlene
White.
We will now take a break for the summer and
resume Wednesday, August 6th. Do stop in and see what we are all about. We need more members! We recently lost two faithful members, John Haller and June Wishman who were certainly assets to our group. The skits June wrote were special treats
for us to perform. She had a wonderful gift of being a masterful
storyteller. Her stories left us spellbound
and wanting to hear more. They will be missed by all of us.
Marilyn Haller, a longtime member received a beautiful bracelet for logging 939 hours of volunteer work. Congratulations Marilyn!
Just a Note
“Did you know it takes 35 minutes for a 150lb woman to walk off a 110 calorie, 7 inch candy cane at a leisurely pace?”
- Arthritis Today Magazine

The first thing I must say is THANK YOU to all of the girls that kept the Coffee Shop going in my absence. Of course you know I lost my John, rather unexpected- but he was 93 and suffering from dementia. I believe he is in a better place. Also, I want to extend my thanks to those who gave memorials in his name. The Siouxland Center for Active Generations meant a lot to John, especially the Friday afternoon dance. He had a great love of music.
I am trying to get back into a routine in the Coffee Shop. I felt
like I was getting along OK, and then at the Volunteer Luncheon I
was honored for having the most volunteer hours for the
year! The Center means a lot to me and I enjoy being here.
The month has been good as always and thanks to you all for coming into the Coffee Shop!

May Quotations
The world’s favorite season is the Spring,All things possible in May.
-Edwin Way Teale
You are as welcome as the flowers in May.
-Charles Macklin
May is a pious fraud of the almanac.- James R. Lowell
What is so sweet and dearAs a prosperous morn in May,The confident prime of the day,And the dauntless youth of the year,When nothing that asks for bliss,Asking alright, is denied,And half of the world is bridegroom is,And half of the world a bride?
-William Watson, Ode in May
Sweet May hath come to love us,Flowers, trees their blossoms don;And through the blue heavens above usThe very clouds move on.
- Henrich Heine, Book of Songs
Fast fading violets cover’d up in leaves; And mid-May’s eldest child,The coming musk-rose, full of dewy wine,The murmurous haunt of flies on summer leaves.
-John Keat
The fair maid, who, the first of MayGoes to the fields at break of dayAnd washes in dew from the hawthorn treeWill ever after handsome be.

Just a few lines this month as we don’t have much going on. We con-tinue working on Follies dances, and practicing old ones that we haven’t done for a while. We are getting ready to perform at the Embassy Nursing Home in Sergeant Bluff on Wednesday, April 18th for their Western Days. We are looking forward to serv-ing and dancing for the “Center’s” Birthday Party on May 14th. This is always fun and exciting to do! We welcome any new dancers to our group as we really do have fun while we work hard to be the best we can be! I am so appreciative for the time and effort Arlene Held and Lila Henke give me and all the dancers
in learning new routines and help-ing with the old ones. It defi-
nitely brings all to the point of knowing all dances, then we
can perform as a group. We will keep dancing
and hope all of you do also!

Ole and Sven, mechanical engineers from Minnesota, were standing at the base of a flagpole, looking up.A woman walks by the asks what they were doing. “We’re supposed to find the height of the flagpole”, said Sven, “but we don’t have a ladder.”The woman took a tape measure from her pocketbook, took a measurement, announced, “Eighteen feet, six inches and walked away.Ole shook his head and laughed. “Ain’t that just like a woman! We ask for the height and she gives us the length!” Sven and Ole are currently working for the United States Government.

Motherly LoveMy daughter, it’s plain to see, looks a lot like me. Blonde hair, blue eyes, round face. My little girl’s glowing at a rapid pace. I miss the days when she would hold my hand. Time slips by like grains of sand. I hope I have trained her in the right way and that a good mother she will become some day.

Grandma’s PieGrannie made such beautiful pies! One day, I asked her, “How do you get such beautiful pies with the crimps around the edge so even?”
It’s a family secret!” she said. “So promise not to tell. I roll out the dough, then cut a bottom layer and carefully put it in the pie plate. Then I slowly pour the filing, making sure it’s not to full. Next I cut a top layer and put it over the filing.
Finally, I take out my teeth and just run them around the edge of the pie crust and they make the nicest even impressions you ever did see.
