IntroductionWhere construction or reconstruction of aproperty is required to replicate a traditionalstyle, the opportunity exists to eliminateshortcomings or areas in which the dampproofing and thermal qualities are not ideal. It is usually possible to introduce measuresthat do not affect the aesthetics of thestructure but do raise the performance andimprove the behaviour of the wall.

Openings in new and existing buildings canbe assessed and preformed closing DPC’smoulded to aid consistent and accurateconstruction. At the same time thermalbenefits can be introduced where possible.

Both architect and contractor are able tomake use of preformed solutions thatcreate the desired detail, thus eliminatingproblems commonly associated withinstaller error and misplacement.

Type D Damp Proof Course• Vertical damp-proof course• Vertical insulator• Robust and self-supporting - cannot sag• Eliminates danger of mortar bridging• Conventional build or attach to frame

IntroductionIf the masonry forming the cavity wallreveal is to be returned in the traditionalmanner, the preformed Type D can bedeployed to provide the requisite dpcprotection and thermal break now soughtto satisfy regulation requirements. Beingready-shaped and available in almost anyprofile, the Type D introduces consistencyof the intended construction detail. Thusdistortion or misplacement associatedwith conventional dpc is eliminated.

Type DIP Type D Interfacing Profile• Vertical dpc• Thermal break• Interfaces with cavity insulation• Eliminates thermal spiking• Rigid profile ensures consistency of build

IntroductionThe Type DIP (Type D in Interfacing Profile)is used where the mason is returning blockwork at the reveal in the traditional manner, and slab insulation is present within thecavity. The Type DIP is manufactured ofsolid dpc to which is bonded insulation. The dpc profile extends sufficiently into thecavity to permit this insulation to overlay thecavity slab insulation and maximise thethermal arrangement whenever inner andouter skins meet. Different profiles areavailable for both straight and checkedapplications to suit structural requirements.

18 Best PracticeWorking for YouAn Example of Product DevelopmentThe Cavi 60 Type SAF (Sloping + Acoustic +Fire) was developed following investigationsinto timber frame construction and cavitycompartmenting.

When there is a requirement for a cavityacoustic barrier, there is commonly also anaccompanying need for a cavity fire barrier.Cavity Trays Ltd has combined both functionsinto one product, but importantly at the sametime has developed a new product shape inthe form of a parallelogram.

The result is the improved and more costeffective way of protecting cavity walls shownopposite. A way that naturally deflectsforward any water penetrating the cavity. Italso safeguards against cavity soundtransmission and provides twice the level offire integrity normally sought of a cavity firestop. We believe it to be the most costeffective way available of establishing all therequisite functions within the cavity wall. It supersedes some previous options.Importantly it offers an improved and morereliable way to construct:

During the course of our survey, conventionalrectangular stops were sometimes witnessedwithin the cavity without any dpc tray or waterdeflecting protection. Penetrating water wasobserved pooling on the upper surface of therectangular stop against the timber framemembrane. This is not good practice. The timberframe membrane is not designed to have waterpooling against it during the life of the structureand eventual deterioration of the timber frameis the long-term potential legacy.

In contrast our best practice design naturallydeflects forward any water penetrating thecavity. It also safeguards against cavity soundtransmission. The Cavi 60 prefix denotes a fireintegrity rating of sixty minutes. Thus threesolutions are provided all in one product.

The Cavi 60 Type SAF may be used with ouraccompanying hardcap cavitray in generalapplications, or without the hardcap cavitray inclosing applications where conditions permit.

The Cavi 60 Type SAF - Best practice withmulti-functional advantage.

Note: Our Acoustic Barrier listed in previous publications is no longer available. It has been superseded by thismulti-functional product which offers the specifier a more cost effective, easier to use and quicker to install option. Please specify clearly to ensure your intended choice is ultimately used on the project in question.

Type GBPWIS Ground Bearing Party Wall Insulating System (for closing base of party cavity wall)• Eliminates need for temporary formwork• Creates and closes cavity arrangement.• Establishes party wall spillage channel• Enhanced perimeter insulation• Multi-functional one placement product

IntroductionThe Ground Bearing Party Wall InsulatingSystem is secured in position betweensemi-detached units, centrally along theline of the party wall. It permits the oversiteconcrete to then be laid without the needof temporary formwork or masonry. TheType GBPWIS is thus enveloped within theconstruction and additionally providesslab edge dpc corroboration with cavityinsulation infill. If an open cavity (channel)is required as per NHBC 6.2 (d), theinsulation can be removed once theoversite concrete has cured. This system isavailable in dimensions to suit all cavitywidths and slab thicknesses.

Masonry materials and masonry finishes influenceperformance. The position of the window or door-framelikewise affects the heat loss path as does the insulationvalue of any cavity closer incorporated. All solutionsshould address thermal bridging and condensation andpromote an airtight detail to satisfy the minimum thermalresistance path. At all times one should seek to optimisethe performance of the cavity wall reveal.

In this idealistic example the frame is positioned over thecavity. The thermal resistance has been measured ABC toinclude the closer insulation and the internal wall finish only.

An insulated closer will aid thermal efficiency andcompliance of regulations, conditional on all associatedand adjacent work being constructed to the mostbeneficial design using materials that promote optimumthermal performance with frames positioned to providemaximum thermal efficiency in accordance with bestpractice and legislation as defined within the BuildingRegulations, British Standards & Robust Details.

Adiabatic classification of an insulating medium means thecalculation has been carried out in isolation of adjacentelements on the basis there is no heat loss or gain.

Thermal resistance is the term given to the measure ofthermal resistance of a particular thickness of material. It is equal to the thickness of material (measured inmetres) divided by the conductivity of that material.

All the resistances within a construction detail are addedtogether to establish the overall resistance of that detail. The reciprocal of the combined thermal resistances ofmaterials in the construction, including surfaces, airspaces, thermal links, air gaps and fixings, make up theU-value calculation.

Sound insulation is the ability of structure or element toreduce the transmission of sound through it, beingnormally measured within 100-4000Hz.

Sound absorption is the loss of sound energy on reflectionat a surface and is not a substitute of sound insulation.

Flanking sound is sound not transmitted via a commonbuilding element but transmitted indirectly via paths suchas cavities.
