Clothing as a Self-Portrait
Think of the choices you make every day, from what you choose to eat, to the way you brush yourteeth, to what you choose to wear for school each day. Without realizing it, you are making choicesthat are completely individual and unique to YOU alone. This homework assignment is designed to
help you practice your skills of drawing fabric, while incorporating an article of clothing that bestrepresents a key component of your personality, interests, etc.
THE TASK:Choose an article of clothing (must be made of fabric!) that you identify as being special to you. Itcould be a gift from someone, something that you always wear every day, a uniform, or even achildhood costume that you still possess.
Arrange the item(s) you have chosen in such a way that they will create a dynamic composition.Consider hanging the item on something unexpected, spreading the item out in such a way that wewould not normally expect to see it, showcasing the item with other objects that relate to you to help
create movement, etc.
Light the scene to create lots of contrast and shadows with a table lamp, spot light, flash light, etc.
Draw four thumbnail sketches of your scene in your sketchbook in preparation for a larger drawing.
