GOALThe purpose of this study, is to identify style
and functional features of present clothing for physically handicapped.
Main goal to design a costume for handicapped is to promote independence in dressing to the extent possible and then assistance to the caregiver in adaptive clothing designs when assisted dressing is needed.(http://www.buckandbuck.com/shop-by-need/handicap-clothing.html)
Clothing is one of the fundamental needs of an individual in every day living. Clothing is a means of self-expression as well as a basic necessity.
Most people are interested in clothing that is comfortable, convenient, easy to handle, safe to wear, easy to clean and attractive in design, This is equally true of the handicapped individuals whose needs are even greater than ours because they need special designs and adaptations for comfort and convenience to increase their ability for becoming independent.(Tavawala 1982)
"Functional Fashions," as the project was named, was headed by designer Helen Copkman. Her philosophy was that clothing for the handicapped could be functional, becoming, and fashionable (Allen 1975).
The study of clothing for the handicapped is a vast and relatively new area of concern. Special clothing has been designed for people whose figures vary from the norm. Clothing of the handicapped person plays as important role in first impressions, can improve the self-image of the handicapped, and aid in their rehabilitation (Allen 1975).
INTRODUCTION
Design of clothe for following types of physically handicapped people.

lIMITATION
Limited range of motion refers to a joint that has a reduction in its ability to move. it may be caused by injury or diseases. Pain, swelling, and stiffness associated.(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Range_of_motion)
1. Limited Range of Motion
garments as nightgowns, blouses, and dresses should open full length, or at least through the waist, to eliminate as much effort as possible in getting them over the head and arms.
For persons with very little mobility, garments can be opened so that they will lie flat, then wrapped around the person in a lying down position. Which will be fastened with zippers, snaps, or pressure.
Fabrics should be lightweight, soft, and flexible, so there will not be undue pressure on the individual.(A Pacific Northwest Extension Publication,1983)

Adaptive equipment
Many people must spend a large portion of their lives in wheelchairs. Some are able to achieve partial or complete independence in dressing themselves, while other's are totally dependent on others to dress them.
The basic clothing problem facing the individual in a wheelchair is that clothes are designed for the standing figure and People who sit continuously need
2. Wheelchair users
Continual sitting in a wheelchair enlarges the hips and waistline so garments must allow ample room in these areas. For some individuals, operating a wheelchair makes the shoulders broader.
fabric should be soft, stretchable, absorbent, slick enough for turning over in bed easily to and from the wheelchair.
Inside seam and facing should be a finished so they are not rough and irritating.
Fasteners should be larger to use and not use in back.
lack of voluntary control over urination or defecation.(https://www.google.co.in/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&ion=1&espv=2&ie=UTF-8#q=what+is+incontinence)
This person are faced with many unpleasant tasks such as washing clothing and bedding and cleaning furniture and floors. For those reasons, the problem becomes a very emotional as well as physical one.
For them clothing should be easy to take off and to care for. Unnecessary garments should be avoided as they can be just
that many more things to change. Back opening wrap-around designs are good choices for women. Onemore suggestion about footwear is go without shoes
whenever possible or wear soft washable fabric boots at home. Choose man-made fabric rather than leather. More than one pair is need to use.
3. incontinence
The woman who has had a mastectomy is first faced with choosing a breast prosthesis (form to replace the missing breast), then with choosing clothing. The prosthesis should be comfortable, fit well, and look natural.
Usually a month or two after surgery. In the meantime a temporary form may be obtained through "Reach to Recovery, lightweight padding can be improvised with a variety of materials such as cotton balls, polyester fiber-fill, lamb's wool, or old nylon hose. These lightweight materials are too light for adequate balance so are usually not satisfactory for permanent use.
A permanent prosthesis should match the weight of the missing breast in order to retain body balance.
For that The most commonly used type is filled with glycerine, silicone gel. Other kinds are filled with air, weighted or unweight foam rubber, or polyester.
A liquid- or gel-filled prosthesis will shift with movements of the body and give a natural appearance.
4. Mastectomy
Fabrics should be lightweight, so that they won't cause pressure on the shoulders and chest.
Wearing an arm or leg cast is a temporary disability but does require that clothing be adapted to fit over the cast. It is also necessary to find ways of dressing and undressing, particularly when the cast is on the arm.
5. Arm and Leg Casts
Arm Casts• Choose blouses or shirts of stretchy knit fabric that can
be pulled over the arm cast and worn in normal fashion.• They may need to be several sizes bigger than usual.
Sweater, knit T-shirts, or sweat shirts can be worn the same way.
• A sleeve can be opened temporarily in a better garment. It will be more comfortable.
Leg casts If pants are to be worn over the cast they should be of
stretchy knit fabrics and have full-cut legs. Jogger's pants are a possibility if they have a zipper or
a stretchy band at the ankles. It may be a necessary to open a seam in the pants leg
and insert a zipper as long as the cast. The zipper can be put in either the inseam or side seam of the pants, wherever it is easiest to open and close.
Women and girls can wear full-cut skirts.
