What is cloud computing?
Cloud computing refers to manipulating, configuring and accessing the applications online. It offers online data storage, infrastructure and applications.
Cloud computing is both a combination of software and hardware based computing resource delivered as a network service.
Applications
Social networking site E-mail sites Search engines Many more services over the
network.
Basic concepts
There are certain services and models working behind the scene making the cloud computing feasible and accessible to end user. Following the working model of cloud computing:
1. Deployment model2. Service model
Deployment Models
Public cloud Private cloud Community cloud Hybrid cloud
Public cloudThe public cloud allows systems and services to be
easily accessible to the general public. Public cloud may be less secure because of its
openness.
Private cloudThe private cloud allows systems and services to be
accessible within an organization. It offers increased security because of its private
nature.
Community cloudThe community cloud allows systems and services to be
accessible by group of organization.
Hybrid cloud The hybrid cloud is mixture of public and private cloud.
However, the critical activities are performed using private cloud while the non-critical activities are performed using public cloud.
Service models
IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service): Just network is provided.
PaaS (Platform as a Service): Operating system and network is provided.
SaaS ( Software as a Service): Required software, operating system and network is provided.
Advantages
Lower computer costsImproved performanceReduced software costsInstant software updatesImproved document
format compatibility
Advantages
Unlimited storage capacityIncreased data reliabilityUniversal document accessLatest version availabilityEasier group collaborationDevice independence
Disadvantage
Requires a constant Internet connection
Does not work well with low-speed connections
Features might be limited
Disadvantage
Can be slowStored data might not be
secureStored data can be lostCompatibility for
clouds/DB/etc.
