“God, please fix the lizard!”

Death is something that just seems to throw us for a loop, doesn’t it? We all know it is coming and we have all experienced death in one way or another. We have all lost those dear to us. We know it is there, we know it is real and we know it is unavoidable, yet we do all we can to pretend

that it isn’t real.

When Pam’s father passed away more than a year ago, we were faced with the task of explaining death to an “almost three-year-old” grandson. As is often the case, we explained that “Papa Bob” was not here with us anymore, he had gone to heaven to be with Jesus. Now when our grandson hears of the death of someone, his typical

response is, “is he/she in heaven with Papa Bob?”

Last week our grandson was forced once again to confront death. A lizard he had observed in the yard was suddenly found dead on the sidewalk. A funeral for the deceased animal followed and the words of a now four-year-old

offered at the eulogy were: “God, please fix the lizard.”

As believers in an all-powerful God, we know he has done just that by sending Jesus to earth to “break the power of him who holds the power of death . . .” (Heb. 2:14) I

thought of the words to a song we sing:

No guilt in life, no fear in death This is the power of Christ in me From life's first cry to final breath Jesus commands my destiny

Death will always be a reality in this life. But what a blessing it is to know we serve the God who has defeated death, and who has promised that even when life in this body is finished, we share a life that has no fear, no death and no

end.
