DeAnna is the Sixth-Eighth Grade English, Language Arts and Reading teacher at the Ray Street Academy. Charles Canaday, Executive Vice President and President of North Carolina Banking for American National Bank and Trust presented the award. DeAnna’s portfolio directly reflects her commitment to her students. She stated “I want the youth of today to be proud of who they are, no matter their gender, ethnicity, race, socio-economic status or any other label or category they fall into. This message was engrained in me from a very young age- the message of how to love myself, how to love other, to always strive to be the best that you can be and never be afraid to reach for your dreams.” Another excerpt read “Yes, our world is changing. It grows different every day and we must be willing to absorb that change and evolve while holding to our morals and ethics and making a voice for each student (child). You must navigate through this wonderful land of learning yet stay positive plus persistent under much scrutiny and observation. What then, is my philosophy of education? One word…Passion!” Other sponsors for the Excellence in Education Award Ceremony include the Alamance County Area Chamber of Commerce, the Alamance Foundation and the Hayden-Harman Foundation. In addition to sponsoring the event the Alamance Foundation and the Hayden-Harman Foundation make contributions to the semi-finalist, finalist and the respective schools. The Chamber of Commerce facilitates the selection committee for Teacher of the Year.
