PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
The older I get the faster time seems to pass. It is hard to
believe that summer is almost over and fall is just around the
corner, arriving on September 23rd. The season “fall” comes
from the Old English language where it was actually referred to
as “feallan”, which refers to the leaves on trees falling as their
life cycle ends. Optimistically, I do look forward to the
changing season with foliage cruises, football games, the Big E,
Stan’s cruise to Harry’s along with abundant local fairs that fill
our calendars quickly.
Carlisle 2019 was widely attended by car enthusiasts anxious
to see the new mid-engine designed Corvette. It is a beautiful
car, but then again aren’t they all? Over 30 Club Corvette
members attended the Carlisle event this year and joined us for a little rest and
refreshments and some good conversation under our tent on the fairgrounds. Thank
you to Jack and Dennis for the refreshments and snacks we enjoyed at Carlisle and Sue
Wadyka for her delicious brownies. Lance Miller stopped by again this year to visit and
thank Club Corvette of Connecticut for our continued support of Carlisle Events.
Many Chevrolet dealers have waiting lists of those looking to order a 2020 Vette and it
appears that all of the new Vettes scheduled for production in 2020 will be sold out very
early. The C8 is only available with an 8 speed dual clutch automatic transmission, or an
inner and an outer clutch, one which engages odd numbered gears, and one which
operates the even unnumbered gears. The operation of the dual clutch transmission is
lightning fast, and offers 8 speeds vs 7 on the manual. With 78% of all Corvettes sold
with this beast of a transmission, it doesn’t look as if offering a manual transmission is
high on the GM priority list, but rumor has it that when the Z06 is introduced in a year
or two it may have a standard transmission option. Chevrolet dealers are anticipating
an unusually large number of used Corvettes to be available late this year and early next
year. So if you are looking to upgrade to a C6 or C7, this may be your golden
opportunity.
Club elections are upon us once again. It’s hard to believe that my first year as
President of CCC will be over in a few short months. If you are considering running for a
position on our Executive Board, please send a brief resume of your qualifications to
Sharon Tossetti so your name can be put on the ballot for the November elections. All
of the positions on our Board carry a wide range of responsibilities and each of our
Directors works very hard to make Club Corvette of Connecticut the best it can be. A
huge “thank you” to each of you for all your efforts and all you do for CCC month after
month.

Corvettes in Carlisle 2019
Memories of Carlisle 2019
Over 30 members of Club Corvette of Connecticut journeyed to Carlisle Pennsylvania to
attend the worlds largest all Corvette show, Corvettes at Carlisle. Carlisle Events, which
hosts Corvettes at Carlisle along with many other car and truck events, got its beginning
in the fall of 1974 after co-founder Chip Miller was asked to leave a car show because
the car he drove was not considered an antique. Chip, along with Bill Miller (no relation)
held the first ever event in September 1974 at the rented fairgrounds and dubbed it
“Post War 74” (now known as Fall Carlisle) and welcomed all makes of cars, new and
old. Unfortunately, Chip passed away in March 2004 from Amyloidosis, a rare and very
hard-to-diagnose blood disease. Lance Miller, Chip’s son, carries on his dad’s legacy at
Carlisle along with Bill Miller. Club Corvette of Ct. enjoys a special relationship with
Lance, who stops by our tent every year for a brief chat with our members and gives us
a big “thank you” for supporting Carlisle and The Amyloidosis Foundation.
This year was particularly special because Chevrolet unveiled the C8 mid-engine
Corvette to the attendees. A totally redesigned car, which I understand has been in the
works since 2005 was, without a doubt, the center of attraction on the Midway. There
were cut-aways of the engine, transmission, and an entire C8 to see how they were
mating a 500 hp engine directly to the rear wheels with the mid-engine design. This is a
very impressive car at an extremely reasonable price when compared to other mid-
engine sport cars. Carlisle Events estimated that over 50,000 guests attended the event
this year with over 5000 Corvettes at the fairgrounds and almost 3000 Corvettes in the
Fun Field alone.
Every year the 50th anniversary Corvette is showcased, this year it was the 1969 Vette.
A huge gathering of 1969 Corvettes was on display, as well as special displays for Grand
Sports, Mid-years, Challenge race cars, ZR1s and especially the new C8. Dave
McLellan, Chief Engineer for Corvette after Zora Duntov, was also in attendance this
year. Dave went to work for Chevrolet in 1959 and has been involved in all phases of
the Corvette’s evolution for over 60 years.
This was my 27th year in a row attending Corvettes at Carlisle. I have to say that I enjoy
the 300 mile drive down almost as much the event itself. During my early years
attending Carlisle, my son was my constant companion every year and only ended his
attendance after he married, started a family, and moved to the Boston area. This year
I drove with my good friend, Steve Widger, followed closely by Ed Yost. We have been
constant companions at Carlisle now for about 17 years and I enjoy the camaraderie of
spending 4 days with fellow Corvette enthusiasts, Club members, and great friends as
much as I enjoy the cars.

Corvettes at Carlisle 2020 will be August 27 – 30. It is not too early to start planning for
this event. Reasonably priced, quality rooms in and around Carlisle are at a premium,
especially as the event grows near, so many of us have already made our reservations
for 2020. Club Corvette of Ct. has a large 20’ x 20’ canopy at a premier location a very
short distance from show cars, rest rooms, and the Midway. Snacks, and cold
beverages, along with abundant conversation are always on hand during the event so
join us in 2020.

Charitable Dinner
(CMAF)
Approximately ten days before departing for this year’s Corvettes at Carlisle, I came
across a Lance Miller video on social media. Lance was advertising the charitable dinner
that would take place on the Friday evening of this year’s event. The dinner would be
held at Carlisle Expo Center, just outside Gate 3. Lance told how the proceeds of the
dinner would go to the CMAF. The cost of the dinner was $35 and included an open bar
(beer, wine, and soda) and a buffet dinner. They would include a raffle and an auction.
I called my co-pilot Dennis and it was agreed that this was an event we should attend.
Two tickets were reserved with a call to Carlisle Productions.
On Friday we arrived at the Expo Center and Lance arrived shortly thereafter. Dennis
and I, immediately struck up a conversation with Lance while waiting for the doors to
open. We were soon joined by Kevin McKay, owner of Corvette Repair and author of
“The Corvette Hunter.” Shortly after the doors opened the crowd began to enter. As we
checked in we bought our raffle tickets and headed to the bar. We then secured a table
close to the front of the room and the head table. We were immediately joined by Ben
LaBaree of Corvettes Conquer Cancer. Our friend and Club Corvette of CT member Ray
Zisa soon took a seat. A gentleman who introduced himself as the National President of
the Solid Axle Corvette Club and his wife were next to join us and, finally a gentleman
wearing a Lingenfelter hat sat down. After a few minutes I asked Ray if he knew this
man and he replied, “Yes, that’s Ken Lingenfelter!” Dennis and I both had a great
conversation with Ken throughout the evening.
Ray Zisa began a conversation with a gentleman whom I recognized but had never met.
Ray introduced both Dennis and me to Mike Yeager of Corvette America. Seated at a
table behind us was Corvette Mike of Massachusetts and we exchanged pleasantries with
him as well. I know by this point you’re thinking what’s with all the name dropping.
Well, quite frankly, that’s what this article is about.

Lance Miller soon welcomed everyone and thanked them for their support. For the
charity, and for quite a few donations, Lance then took a whipped cream pie to the face.
After cleaning up a bit he then introduced two of the former Corvette Race Team’s
drivers, Johnny O’Connell and Andy Pilgrim. Both drivers spoke to the crowd and related
some great stories about their careers with the Race Team. Later in the evening I had a
lengthy discussion with Andy Pilgrim, where among other topics, we talked about the
late John Fitch and how Andy’s work seemed like a continuation of John’s work regarding
safety on the American highways.
The auction began and the first item up for bids was an offer from Michael Brown,
producer of the film “The Quest.” Michael offered 2 airline tickets, 2 night’s
accommodations, dinner, and an autographed copy of his wife’s latest “best seller,” and
a private tour of his Corvette and Neon Sign collection. Before they even finished the
description of what was being offered I raised my hand and bid $200. Another
gentleman then bid $300 and it was on. We continued to bid against each other and
when I bid $750 the room got quiet. Dennis leaned over and said you’re going to win.
As excited as I was I began to think of how I was going to explain to my wife, who, as
many of you know, is not a car person, that I spent $750 and that we were going to
Texas to view a Corvette collection. “Going once, going twice!” when suddenly the
gentleman I had been bidding against yelled out, “$800”. Despite every effort from the
auctioneer to have me place another bid I thought it in my best interest to keep my
hand down and mouth shut. Shortly after Michael Brown went by and whispered, “You
let it go for $50!” I believe discretion was the better part of valor. After numerous
other items went up for bid and sold, the final item of the evening was presented by the
Corvette Engineering Team. It was a signed piece of carbon fiber that was used on the
first C-7 ZR1 to test paint on carbon fiber. I have no idea what anyone would do with
this - hang it on a wall maybe? Once again the bidding was spirited and came down to
two guys who in my opinion didn’t know when to stop. The final bid was $5000! Well, it
was for a good cause.
The raffle was next and neither Dennis nor I won anything, although we did walk away,
as did everyone who attended, with an etched beer mug. The etching was of the #3,
LeMans class winning, 1960 Corvette.
Both Dennis and I admitted to each other that this was one very special night. Meeting
so many distinguished members of the Corvette world was something I believe both he
and I will remember for quite some time. As we were walking out and heading for my
car Dennis exclaimed, “This was like meeting Elvis!” I don’t know about that, but I do
know we will be going back to the dinner next year.

25th NCM Anniversary Caravan
The trip of a lifetime
How do you begin to tell the story of a trip of a lifetime? You start at the beginning and
that beginning started exactly two summers prior with mini-trips called “Meet and
Greets.”
One trip was to Newport, one to Maine, and one to Saratoga. They were localized trips
for folks to get to know one another. Each one whet your appetite for Bowling Green
just that much more.
Our Bowling Green trip started on the Thursday, August 22, as we cruised to Carlisle
with Dennis Krajewski and Jack Stacey. As always, it was a fun time. But Barb, Don
Byrne, and I split off and continued on to Gettysburg to meet up with the New England
Caravan and 200+ of our closest friends.
Besides an excellent fact-filled bus trip to the battleground where 51K American Soldiers
gave their lives in three days, there were trips to Corvettes of Carlisle, (where we got to
see, touch, and sit in the C8), the Amish country, and the Harley Davidson factory. Did
you know that Harley is now selling an electric version? I’m not sure how successful it
will be sans that signature sound.
We left the area on Sunday, motored down to Roanoke, VA, to a truly beautiful hotel,
oddly enough named the Hotel Roanoke. On our way we visited the Shenandoah
Caverns.
Quick quiz - What’s the formation called that raises from the ground? The Ceiling? (The
way I remember them is stalagmite has a “G” in it for ground and stalactite has a “C” in
it for ceiling).
On Monday we motored down to Bristol Motor Speedway but, on the way, our route took
us to the “Back of the Dragon” which was a 30+ mile stretch of road with more than 400
twists and turns. At the Speedway, with Barb riding shotgun, we drove a few laps where
we climbed the wall, got up to 70+mph and never got out of 3rd gear. It had to be tied
for the second best time I ever spent in a car.
The last four days of our trip were in Bowling Green, Kentucky and the National Corvette
Museum where I was told that 10K+ Corvettes were in attendance. Almost one full day
was spent in the Museum and we still didn’t get to read or to see everything. Another
one-half day was spent on their 3.15 mile, 24 turn road course. This is the other tied-
for-second best time I ever spent in a car. Barb and I also did some touring on our own.
While trying to find some famous local barns we discovered a local winery and its very
friendly owner. Unfortunately, we didn’t get to any bourbon distilleries but they are on
our bucket list for the next caravan. We, along with Don, Bob and Sue did find a great
spot for ice cream - Chaney’s Dairy Barn.

Friday was our last night before journeying home. It was a really fun filled evening. It
was the Hall of Fame induction dinner. Good food, good music, and good times. Who
knew Bod Wadyka and George Sipprell were such good dancers? The event was to honor
three people so very important in the history of Corvette - Briggs Cunningham, Tom
Peters, and Dollie Cole.
All of these people were important to the history and development of Corvette but Dollie
Cole, who was the wife of the President of GM’s Ed Cole, stood out to me. She was quite
the force of nature and served as the Chairperson for the NCM for 2000 and 2001.
Oh BTW, the first best time I ever spent in a car was the summer I delivered Meals on
Wheels. Why? What do you think it was?

My Caravan
Corvette owners from New England, New York, and Eastern Canada began gathering in
Gettysburg, PA beginning August 21. On each of the following days more Vette owners
checked into the Wyndham Hotel. Randy and Judy Flock were the overall captains of the
group, but each state had a local captain. David and Sue Huntley were the CT leaders.
Events were planned each day the group was in Gettysburg, with trips to the Amish
country, the Harley Davidson factory, a winery, bus tours of the Gettysburg battlefield,
and Carlisle. Once in Gettysburg most CCC members formed a mini caravan with Bob
and Sue Wadyka as the leaders. On Saturday there was a kick-off banquet at the hotel.
Sunday was the start of the caravan, with a stop at the Shenandoah Caverns along the
way. There were four tour times when our Club members split up in the tours. After Ken
and Barb Uliano’s tour we began as a small group with Bob Wadyka leading again and
Rod and Linda DeFord joining the group. We then headed to the Hotel Roanoke for a
dinner banquet and a relaxing evening.
On Monday our group headed to Bristol Motor Speedway. However, on the way we
traveled over VA rt. 16 from Marion, VA, to Tazewell, VA. This stretch of road is 32 miles
long with 438 curves, several which are switchbacks. This was a very challenging drive.
Pag
e13
When we arrived at Bristol it took a good half hour for all of the mini caravans to get
there since there was a total of about 275 cars in our
caravan. We drove down on the infield for a photo
shoot and then those who had purchased track time
stayed and formed groups for the laps on the track.
The banks were steeper than I had expected, but
were a blast to drive on. Following the track laps our
mini group headed to the Meadowview Resort in
Kingsport, TN, for a dinner in the ballroom and a
relaxing evening.
On Tuesday we left TN and headed to Bowling Green, specifically the Holiday which
would be our home for the next 4-5 days. This trip was the only heavily traveled day
because we went through Knoxville during morning rush hour in the rain. We arrived at
the hotel, checked in, and had a nice boxed lunch. At 2:00 we gathered in the parking
lot and began the caravan to the Museum. Once we arrived at the Museum we checked
in to get our goodie bag and items we had ordered, then went to the unveiling of the
bench that the group had purchased. We then went our own way to tour the Museum,
the grounds, and vendor areas. We also checked out the C8s that were on display.
The next two days we were able to do laps on the
Motorsport track, explore the Museum more, or hit some
local places of interest. Wednesday evening was the NE
Caravan Banquet. The dinner was a buffet with
entertainment to follow. Club members were part of the
entertainment. The event
had a Hawaiian theme and
two of our members
jumped right in to provide a
lot of laughs. On Thursday
evening the Museum provided a live concert featuring
Jefferson Starship, which was followed by fireworks.
The last organized day was Friday. Many of our group took
buses into Nashville and spent half a day exploring
the bars of the city. That evening the New England
group hosted the Hall of Fame dinner.
Our leaders did a fantastic job of putting together an
event involving about one thousand people at the Sloan
Center, which was next to our hotel. During a trip like this you get to meet a lot of
wonderful people with a common love. This was my fourth caravan and while the first
stands out, probably because it was totally new, this one was an unbelievable
experience.

A conversation with Reeves Callaway
During the August Club meeting Reeves Callaway the founder and owner of Callaway
Cars and Mike Zoner the Managing Director came to our meeting.
Mike presented the history of Calloway including many of their accomplishments.
Reeves spoke about the company both past and future.
He then opened the floor to Q&A. Many members were
curious about Callaway’s plans for the C8. But we were
told none have been finalized yet. We will have to wait
and see.
They both graciously spent time meeting with and talking
to individual members.
For anyone who may have missed the meeting, visit our web site; Mike’s presentation
has been uploaded to the video gallery.

MUSEUM EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR WENDELL STRODE NAMED TO
2020 CORVETTE HALL OF FAME
During the Corvette Hall of Fame banquet held on August 30, 2019, as part of the
National Corvette Museum’s 25th Anniversary celebration, NCM Board Chairman,
Lon Helton, spoke to the 1,050 guests in attendance about reaching this milestone
year. He shared his optimism for the future and expressed his gratitude for retiring
Executive Director Wendell Strode.
“Wendell, your 23 years of service to the NCM could never be [overstated]. A few
years after it opened, the NCM fell on some pretty tough times, to the point where
I think that its very existence was threatened. Not only did you rescue the NCM—
you led it to the prosperity that we enjoy today.”
He then went on to make a surprise announcement. “As we prepare to meet the
2019 inductees to the Hall of Fame… it is my pleasure to announce to you that the
2020 class of the Corvette Hall of Fame will include Wendell Strode.”
The crowd showed their support with a thunderous standing ovation.
This honor is well-deserved, as Wendell was involved in getting the National
Corvette Museum going when it was still just an idea.
In 1988, word had spread that the National Corvette Restorers Society had been
exploring the idea of building a Corvette Museum. Strode, a banker at the time,
contacted the local Chamber of Commerce with an idea to initiate a proposal to
have it built in Bowling Green, Kentucky. He then found himself heading up a task
force, bringing to the table an offer of a 30-acre land donation from private
citizens, and a commitment from the State of Kentucky to put in the road and
utilities. Strode also worked with the NCRS to put together a financial package that
included a feasibility study to get banks interested in joining the effort.
Pag
e17
The Museum opened Labor Day weekend 1994 with much fanfare, but the
excitement was short-lived as it soon began experiencing financial troubles. Strode
was recruited to join the National Corvette Museum as Executive Director on
December 20, 1996. At the time, he had never even driven a Corvette and had
only ridden in one once. While he didn’t know much about the car itself, what he
did know was how to save its new home.
Strode worked to develop new strategies for generating funds, while making
strides to repair strained relationships with the community, clubs, enthusiasts,
media, the Plant, and GM. During his tenure, the Museum not only paid off its
initial debt, but it nearly doubled its size, adding a world-class motorsports facility
to its facilities. Under his leadership Museum membership grew from 1,600
enthusiasts to almost 36,000 members today. He even managed to survive a
Corvette-swallowing sinkhole and helped to turn the attention it brought into a
chance to share the Museum with a global audience.
The 2020 Corvette Hall of Fame recipients will be inducted during a ceremony and
banquet held on Friday, September 4, 2020. Additional inductees will be
announced at a later date. Their induction will take place as part of the Museum’s
26th Anniversary Celebration, scheduled for September 3-5, 2020.
Since its inception in 1997, 74 individuals have been inducted into the Corvette
Hall of Fame for their contributions to the past, present and future of Corvette.
