Richard’s Ramblings Richard’s Ramblings Richard’s Ramblings Richard’s Ramblings

Fellow Rotarians The New Year got off to a bad start when our fellow Rotarian, Tony Alexander, was involved in a serious Road Traffic Accident on the 08 January. The initial news was not good, but it does appear that he is now making good progress. Our thoughts are with him at this difficult time. It was during this period, that the first two stages of the R1 Youth Speaks Competition were held at Exmouth Community College. As the organisers during the initial stages, our members never cease to be amazed at the quality of the students who enter the competition, their ability to research and articulate their subject matter and put forward a balanced point of view. It really made for a fascinating evening, and we as a Club are proud to be associated with this competition; and other Youth Events in which we are involved with the students of Exmouth Community College.

On a much more serious note, we paid a visit to Little Bridge House which is a hospice for terminally ill children at Barnstaple. It was a moving experience. We departed therefrom being much more knowledgeable about a project that we support and the difference that our contributions make to the children and their families who have a need to stay there.

To end on a lighter vein, the social side of our Club has not been neglected and during this period we visited the Theatre Royal, Plymouth to watch Cinderella, a ballet set to the music of Prokofiev, after enjoying a pre-performance meal in the Circle Bar. On the 07 February Foundation organised a Fun Horse Race Evening which was attended by wives, partners and friends of the Club. Although we all come from sheltered and protected backgrounds, the membership now have some idea of how and when to place a bet on a horse. DickDickDickDick

Rotary DNA!Rotary DNA!Rotary DNA!Rotary DNA!

This Rotary year features a culture of innovation in which we are looking at all aspects of our policies, practices, and procedures to see if they can be modernized and improved. Not surprisingly for an old and large organization like ours, we are identifying many areas that could, and should, be brought up to date.

But at the same time, I fully recognize that some things are so significant in Rotary’s success that they are sacrosanct. but I prefer to call them our DNA. They are the characteristics that distinguish Rotary from all other organizations. They are the essence of who Rotarians are and what Rotarians have in common around the world. The five core values are fellowship, service, integrity, diversity, and leadership. Young people prefer the word networking to our traditional word of Fellowship, but to me they are equivalent. Both words lead to lasting friendships in our clubs, which bonds us together between making Rotary membership truly priceless. Friendship is clearly the most essential element of Rotary’s DNA! Rotarians should not worry that the current emphasis on modernization will damage our core values. I want to assure Rotarians that we will not alter the values and attitudes that have made Rotary a premier organization – one that is now on the world stage through PolioPlus! We have so much to be proud of. This is our finest hour, and our best days are still ahead as we help our clubs to be Bigger, Better, and Bolder. Along with our five core values, persistent progress is another prestigious part of Rotary’s DNA! Ray KlinginsmithRay KlinginsmithRay KlinginsmithRay Klinginsmith RI President

RRRRooms to ponderooms to ponderooms to ponderooms to ponder A visit to Little Bridge House One of our chosen club charitable causes is Children’s Hospice South West. It operates the only two children’s hospices in the South West, Little Bridge House in North Devon, and Charlton Farm, near Bristol.

The visit to Little Bridge House, near Barnstaple, was awe inspiring demonstrating to us, as funders, the selflessness of the management and staff in their care for those needing comfort and reassurance at a very critical time in their lives. They provide hospice care to life-limited children and their families from across the South West; from South Gloucester, Bristol, Somerset, Devon and Cornwall, and the Isles of Scilly.

To say we were moved is an understatement! But the inside of this house exudes an air of tranquillity, peace and understanding of and for the young ones who pass through.

The whole family can stay at the hospices and, with a dedicated sibling support service available, this means that the well brothers and sisters can be cared for during their visit and enjoy spending time with other children in similar situations to their own.

The support the staff give extends to the whole family, into bereavement and beyond for as long as each family needs them. With over 1,000 life-limited children across the South West, their support for families is absolutely vital.

Fundraiser and friend of our Club, Paul, who regularly attends our Kite Festival, guided some of us through the house and its rooms, explaining the value and meaning of each room.

For the children, lessons continue and the pictures, models and wall hangings are testament to their learning. The sibling support team provides activities while the children are staying at Little Bridge House; these can be in-house or out-of house, visiting many entertainment attractions in the region. The activities

are not always exclusively for siblings, as an aim of the Sibling Service is to develop and support the relationships within the family. It also provides specific support for bereaved children, working according to the family needs. They make use of crafts to support the grieving process. Each year, Little Bridge House, currently the only children's hospice in the South West, cares for over 200 sick children and their families and offers support to more than 100 families in bereavement.

The spirit of Little Bridge House and Children’s Hospice SouthWest is totally expressed in the magnificent sculpture in the gardens. Ed.Ed.Ed.Ed.

Whats on update? Whats on update? Whats on update? Whats on update? Our skittles roll has ended!!! Sorry folks we lost against Exe Valley. Adrian had a fantastic evening with two strikes of 14 pins. If we had been able to follow his example we would have won easily!!!

Next match on Wednesday 23rd February (rearranged from 24th February) at home against Crediton followed by an away match against Axminster on Tuesday 1st March. Everyone should have their tickets by now for Holiday on Ice on Friday February 18th 2011 at 7.30 pm at Westpoint . All those that I have spoken to had a great evening at the ballet at the Theatre Royal, Plymouth. Dennis did a great job organising this outing including ensuring that Brain and Lorraine who could not make the Thursday were able to go on Saturday see the show and have their meal!! I have 32 people interested in the evening visit to the Norman Lockyer Observatory at Sidmouth onThursday 17th March. I will be in touch shortly re-final arrangements. For the outing to The King and I at Torquay on Thursday 30th June, I have 25 names and 20 tickets!!! Watch this space—I will try and get some more. I have received papers on the annual Exmoor Rotary Challenge walk on Sunday April 3rd. I know that a few of the “gypsies” amongst us may be going up and I will pass a sheet around soon. On Thursday 27th January, thirty three Exmouth Rotarians and friends went to see the Birmingham Royal Ballet's performance of Prokofiev’s Cinderella; in Plymouth. The coach arrived a little late due to a local motor accident and a resulting detour, but we still had time to have an excellent meal prior to the show. Everyone agreed that it was a memorable occasion enjoyed by all. DennisDennisDennisDennis

A passion for support!A passion for support!A passion for support!A passion for support! As part of their Annual Day of Service in the New Year, the industrious ladies of the Inner Wheel club baked cakes for the Exmouth Open Door Centre and Devon Sheltered Homes Trust Bystock Court. care home for people with learning difficulties. Once made, they all brought their offerings to a Coffee Morning during which they raised donations for Help for Heroes. Afterwards, some members delivered the cakes to the two centres along with the club members best wishes. Also in January, members enjoyed a wonderful evening meal in the Streamside Restaurant at the Greenfingers Garden Centre. It was a first time visit and the food was so delicious and the service so good that everyone thought it woudn't be long before they were back again. As President Iris's charity for the year is Exeter Hospiscare, the February meeting welcomed Alison Palfrey, the funding Director who explained the work of the charity; which cares for the terminally ill. This is provided not only in the twelve bed unit in the hospice but also within the community where a team of highly skilled nurses visit and provide support for patients within their own homes. This wonderful service relies upon donations to the fund and the Inner Wheel ladies were most happy to give Alison a cheque for £500 for it's continued work. The Inner Wheel March meeting will be the Annual Dinner at East Devon Golf Club. Usual activities will also continue which include support and help with many of the events of the Exmouth Rotary Club. Wheels Falling OffWheels Falling OffWheels Falling OffWheels Falling Off ? ? ? ? BBC Radio 4 ran a two-part programme on our organisation in January in which they examined the perceived decline in membership in local clubs. It was admitted that we have a thriving global member base, but the assertion was that these changing times mean that in the western world Rotary is less relevant and less attractive than it used to be. Luckily in Dartmouth we seem to have no difficulty in finding new members. In a future edition we shall be “Minds are like parachutes - they only function when they are open.” The following image is a picture of a rare inscription, anticipating Rotarian principles, which was sculpted in the XVth Century over the Renaissance doorway of the noble Berardetti house, 29 - via del Duomo, Spoleto (Italy). The motto over the door carved in ancient Italian,: "Per Servire s'acquista - Servi quando p(u)oi" means: "Who Serves Profits - Serve when you can". This is reminiscent of the original Rotary motto “He Profits Most who Serves Best”.

Australia Rotary Health HighlightsAustralia Rotary Health HighlightsAustralia Rotary Health HighlightsAustralia Rotary Health Highlights

From bike rides to Arctic expeditions, Australia Rotary Health has seen its fair share of fundraising highlights. October saw the final leg of the Great Australian Bike Ride – an event that ran for seven months, over 178,000 km, and raised $250,000 for medical research. Tim Meadhurst led an expedition to the North Plole to raise $105,000 for bipolar research, while three singing cyclists traversed Queensland raising $17,500. Finally, 115 cyclists met the challenge set by the Rotary Club of Townsville Central to “banish the black dog” (please explain, George) raising $44,000 in the process. The quest to engage corporate sponsors has also been successful with $75,000 granted from the Pratt GFoundation over three years for the indigenous scholarship programme and another from Woodside Energy for rural nursing scholarships.

And, a little on the lighter side…………….. When th North Queensland toen of Ingham was flooded last year, in addition to snakes and crocodiles swimming merrily through the streets, the Normanton Hotel ran out of beer – a tragedy for thirsty locals. A public youth speaks competition, eastern area final 2011, was held on Tuesday 8th February at the Judith Telfer Hall, Exmouth Community College and hosted by the Rotary Club of Exmouth

There were three Junior teams, all under the age of 11 on 31st August 2010. The standard was outstanding – but the team from Kentisbeare C of E School were victorious with “Getting to and from School.” This school does not a have local Rotary Club to sponsor them, but each year Exmouth step in!

Helen Meikle, Jake Kuliszewski and Rebecca Cligg

Four teams participated in the Intermediate, age up to 13 years on 31st August 2010. The teams came from King School, Ottery St Mary, Sidmouth College and Exmouth Community College. Exmouth team were successful with “Sliding Doors”.

Helen Pawson, Louise Leigh and Ben Berkhaut

The Seniors had four teams, all under the age of 17 on 31st August 2010. The teams came from Kings College, Otter St Mary, Exmouth Community College and two teams from the Culm Valley Young Farmers, who attend different schools. It was pleasing that a Culm Valley team were victorious with “”Crash, Bang, Wallop”, as they have supported this competition for a number of years.

Michelle Boyce, Emily Underwood and Emily Vallis

It was a highly successful evening with the Exmouth Rotary Club pulling out all the stops for making a very professional well-run evening. The Inner Wheel Club supplied refreshments for all the students, teachers, parents and supporters. Our District 1170 Governor, Carole Angliss, made the presentation. Letter from Letter from Letter from Letter from Amy Amy Amy Amy (abridged) (abridged) (abridged) (abridged)

Hi Ian, Just wanted to let you know how plans were going here for the clinic and the proposed grant. We had a meeting yesterday with the village leaders, and they are very excited, and think we can put the money to very good use equipping the Kitisi clinic. We discussed whether to split the money across several clinics, but this one is in a fairly central location, and by investing the money in this one, we can make it more of a local centre where people know they have access to relatively good equipment. The main desire is for better care for women delivering babies, and they particularly want beds for women to deliver on, and then some recovery beds as well – at the moment they don’t even have mattresses on the floor, so this will make a huge difference. They also want shelves for medicines, and other possibilities include a solar-powered fridge to keep medicines cool, possibly a small generator, and basic equipment like stethoscopes and thermometers. They are having a main Village Assembly meeting on Tuesday, and will come up with some agreed items then, which we will cost out locally and then be able to have a much better idea about exactly what we will buy. Once they confirm the basics, I will finalise the section of the grant with the objectives etc, I should be able to get that to you very soon – just waiting for the village meeting conclusions now. Everything else is good here – it has been very hot and humid, but we had a huge storm yesterday, which cleared things up. Lots of hyaena problems around, so we are busy working with local people to improve their livestock enclosures. We are doing a cost-share scheme where we offer half the costs of making a predator-proof enclosure, and the pilot scheme has been very popular, so I think we will hopefully develop that in the future, as livestock are such important assets to these very poor households. Cheers, Amy.

Hot off the Hot off the Hot off the Hot off the Stop Stop Stop Stop PPPPressressressress!!!! Rtn Tony is continuing his recovery at home from the injuries he sustained in the unfortunate accident. Next week he will have full scans to ascertain how well his recovery is progressing. Kathy has the unenviable task of trying to control his impulsiveness – trying to run before the walk! We wish Tony a continued speedy recovery and thoughts to Kathy.
