Learn to Sail Report

With a perfect day most of the expected learners turned up, plus a woman and her son just hoping there was a cancellation on the day (which there was). Seven Bics, three pacers, our two 350s and a learner’s Alpha cat

were employed and although most of the time was used learning how to rig boats and lessons, all boats got on the water. The kids were keen, so were first out on the water with the gentle 3-5 knot NE’erly. Only two problems. They had not been instructed on closing the bungs and they had not been taught the capsized drill!! Luckily the bung problem was discovered before they got too far and boats were quickly drained. The capsize and righting drill was learnt by yelling from the rescue RIB and all managed to get up again.

The 350s were a big hit especially with Alex and his dad. Alex is in the Australian squad for Opties and we may have ruined his devotion to that class. They were just here to help out and Alex gave the demo on how to tack a Bic to the other kids. Duncan and Jonathan went out with adults in the Pacers and we had good reports back from all concerned. Our boats held together well after days of work repairing them during our recent Friday working bees but especially from Chris who gave up several Saturdays as well using his fiberglass skills. All in all it was a great success and with what we learnt from last season we will do a better job of teaching them how to sail this time as well. Phill

Race Reports for September 23rd

Gennaker Report

Both gennaker authors were off the water, Mike overseas and Duncan in the tower looking at a gorgeous nor-easter. The start was delayed 10 minutes by a Trailer Yacht taking out the end buoy, which was also the rounding mark. Three gennakers headed off with Barry & Anna (F15) in front of Brendan & Tom (MG14) then Vince (RS100). They remained in that order but were close enough after one lap. As the tide turned to incoming and the breeze waned, gaps opened up as upwind boat speed played a bigger role. Five roundings of the top mark made it a long race but nobody minded in such nice conditions.

Monohull Report

Only 5 boats racing for the first heat of the championship series; missing Puddleduck, Raver and the still to un-hibernate Hammin' it Up. Professor Fleming did his (becoming) usual rounding at the trailer start that lead to the pin mark disappearing down the course attached to the Spider's bulb.....causing chaos for the next start up. When the answering pennant was finally flown and the start line reinstated we were rearing to go. Unfortunately a misunderstanding by Olde Golde and Zephyr around the change in sequence (sailing instructions guys!) resulted in them taking off to brilliant starts, 1 minute early. Easy when you are by yourself isn't it. Des heard the shouts from the start boat and returned for the "real" start, leaving Roy to sail off into the distance......Halfway up the gloriously true beat to the sea marks Alter Ego had taken the lead closely pursued by Wilful

Intent with a very serious looking young Gracie at the helm and the newly instated crew (go Dad!) yelling all the needless instructions that for'ard hands are prone to when excited. The race descended into a line of sail, positions not changing, just leads and gaps closing and stretching as we all took turns to pick the wrong side of the big wind shifts that were hefty in the top half of the course. So at the end of a really nice day on the water on a lovely course, the corrected positions were Alter Ego, Wilful Intent (who would have won it if Dad had been game enough to try the kite a bit more...), Zephyr (with his minute head start added to elapsed time (plus perhaps the penalty six-pack at some stage...), Olde Golde (go Des) and Retro at the tail with Graham muttering darkly about "things still to learn".

Catamaran report

No cat race report this week

Trailer Sailor Report

Firstly, apologies are due to Graeme Fleming on Incy Wincy. Last race, Incy did in fact lead around the first two marks, not Bad Blood as reported. The weather this Sunday could not have been more favourable.

We had five trailers greet the starter. All Spider 550’s or their Colson cousin’s EX and Just a Touch. A very competitive start saw Shades of Grey first over, only to unnecessarily, and voluntarily restart. Lesson here is, if the starter doesn’t recall you, don’t go back. Incy started, just as he finished the last race, hooked on a mark and chose to just sit back, relax and watch. Reg and Bad Blood battled tack for tack, gybe for gybe for the first lap till Bad Blood, once in front, forgot where he was going and had to settle with being back in the very tight pack at the bottom mark.

Second lap saw Bad Blood back in front and heading for a good win, till, yet another mark mishap closed the gap once again. At the finish Bad Blood prevailed by around forty seconds to Reg, with Shades a minute back and Just a Touch well in sight. Ex cruised on as usual enjoying the weather, the beer, and a beautiful day out. Congratulations all, another great day on the river and the numbers are slowly building. Cheers Ian.
