Today we welcome our friends, players, committee and supporters from West Cheshire, Widnes. Victory went the way of the home side last season, both sides will, no doubt, be looking for the clean sweep this season. Last season Widnes finished a couple of points higher in the league than Wilmslow, in that ‘mid-table’ band where games won and lost are fairly even but were bonus points can make all the difference. With the weather and ground conditions, at the time of writing this, we can expect an open running game, played above the ground, with plenty of tries….hopefully more for us!! Every club has one….Wilmslow has our very own Barry Fisher. Barry, as you may or may not know, is the custodian, recorder, contributor and caretaker of the club’s history and records, evidence of this is visible around the club in the form of photos, soon to be seen in the new ‘snug’, and on a regular basis in Fisher’s ‘Famous’ Half Page in the match day programme. I’m not sure if this is an official position, or if it was acquired way back when, but what Barry does not know, remember or have access to regarding the club’s history’s almost isn’t worth knowing. Widnes have their own Barry, in the form of John Loughnane; during last season’s visit to Widnes, myself, Mark McCall and Mark Shotton (a former Widnes player but nobody seems to remember him!) had the opportunity to see some of John’s work. John has compiled 50 years of Widnes Rugby Club history in to a book, “If you go down to the Wids today”, which is the story of the first 50 years of Widnes RUFC; an overview is on the club ‘Heritage website’, worth a look at. History and traditions, and members such as Barry and John, are what makes clubs such as Wilmslow and Widnes such an integral part of our lives and keep us turning up; from the youngest on a Sunday morning to the ‘more mature’ on a Saturday afternoon, playing or watching. Due to prior commitments, I have only had limited opportunity to personally see but not yet experience, the effects the new scrummaging laws (“Crouch – Bind – Set”) are having on the game, for all concerned; players, referees and spectators. A couple of Wilmslow pre-season games, the South Africa v Australia game last weekend, are not sufficient to be convinced one way or the other yet, so a canvassing of seasoned campaigners, i.e. former players, coaches and players with 1 to 5 on the shirts, concludes that the jury is still out. Certainly, so far as the international match was concerned there were considerably fewer collapsed scrums and, I’m certain, the overall time for scrummaging during the game was greatly reduced. Clearly, at this stage of the trial period, some teams might benefit more than others, certainly the physically smaller and more technically adept front rows are likely to have the initial advantage over sheer size and power in the early parts of the season. Unquestionably, scrum machines (…for the benefit of the backs, and some back rows, the scrum machine is the scaffolding on rollers or blocks of wood in the corner of the practice ground!) are going to feature even more on training nights, where the front row “Dark Arts” are passed on. This is undoubtedly a topic of discussion with, I’m sure, divided opinions both on and off the field….worth discussing over a pint after the game! Has anyone asked the referees what they think…? Finally, back to this afternoon. Whether you’re a player or supporter, enjoy what our club has to offer today.

After Christmas this league splits

into two seven club

conferences, determined by whether you

finish the first half of the

season in the top or bottom

half of the league.

I’m not sure if this is an official position, or if it was acquired way back when, but what Barry does not know, remember or have access to regarding the club’s history’s almost isn’t worth knowing. Saturday 21st. September 2013 North 1 West Wilmslow 27-24 Liverpool St. Helens Right at the end of this nerve tingling encounter, it took a last kick of the match 40m penalty from Lawrence James to settle the matter in the home team’s favour. Earlier the Wolves had scored three tries to race into a 21-0 lead in as many minutes. At that stage it all looked too easy for them as LSH stared an unpleasant mauling in the face. To their credit, they roused themselves and in the next sixty minutes, they scored three tries of their own and on the cusp of full time LSH fly half Greg Smith appeared to have repeated his heroics of the previous week when he tied things up with a 40m penalty shot from far out on the LSH right. There was time for just one more play. LSH fielded the restart without trouble and in retrospect they should have booted the ball out of play and settled for the draw. Perhaps they thought that in a dramatic denouement they could run the length of the field and take the spoils with a fourth try. Almost inevitably though, they got caught in front of their own posts and as the Wolves vigorously counter rucked, LSH were penalised for holding on. James knew that this was going to be his moment. Just after he struck the ball there were loud cheers from his team mates, who knew the kick was good, long before it bisected the posts. On a lovely September afternoon that was only part of the story. The Wolves had started as though they were going to sweep everything asunder. Although both sides looked dangerous with ball in hand, Wolves full back Ben Day in particular, put in some good early kicks which caught the opposition out and created good attacking positions. On seven minutes, lock Dan Wright took a short ball at the lineout, the forwards rallied round and drove sucking in the defence and when the ball was released, Day joined the line and broke the tackle to score under the posts. Ten minutes later the Wolves repeated the catch and drive exercise, this time on their left before releasing the ball which made its way to James on the right wing. He still had a lot to do and probably he should have been stopped but he stayed on his feet, cut inside and made the line. Four minutes later, the Wolves plundered a ruck ball from LSH and although the passing was scrappy, it was quick and Day cut inside to put an unstoppable rampaging Mike Clifford in for the third. And that was as good as it got for the Wolves. LSH may be going through something of a rebuilding exercise but in full back Ian Stanley, fly half Greg Smith, centres Matty Cunliffe and Neil Hull and No. 8 Phil Kearns, they have the personnel, who not only know their way around the block but can also play a bit. Quickly their back three learnt how to deal with the Wolves kicking for position tactic and fielding the ball in acres of space, they ran it back and they ran it wide, frequently out flanking the Wolves defence as their confidence grew. The pattern for the remaining three quarters was set. The Wolves had no answer apart from a tenacious defence and a vigorous pack which did everything it could in lineout, scrum, maul and ruck to disrupt their opponents. But whenever, the free running LSH backs were presented with loose ball, danger threatened and they could easily have scored more than three times if they had just been a bit more secure in their passing. Their first try came after twenty five minutes when referee Snoddy allowed advantage to the Wolves following a visitor’s knock on. The ball was hacked down field and then ran back by LSH. Full back Ian Stanley sniffs out try scoring opportunities like a tracker dog and was on hand to get LSH on the score sheet. The same Stanley was then yellow carded when he was deemed to have deliberately knocked on as the Wolves won ruck ball in a clear try scoring position. James landed his first penalty on the half hour but it was the last time the Wolves were to get themselves into a try scoring situation. As half time approached a weak kick out of defence allowed LSH to come again. After several phases, Wolves centre Craig Cooper was yellow carded and in the next play, the wily Greg Smith knew exactly where the chink in the Wolves armoury would be as he looped round to make it 24-14 at half time.

The second half continued in a similar vein. For the most part, the Wolves were without the ball, they were being run ragged by the LSH ball carriers and how they restricted them to only one try from Stanley on the hour is something of a mystery. Team manager Mike

Blackett rang the changes. Matt Pearson came on for Day, now struggling with a dodgy hamstring, Max Harvey made his debut replacing Johnny Newsham at hooker and Simeon Meek made way for Jordan Ayrey at tight head. Ayrey made his presence immediately felt as he instigated several impressive drives in the scrum but LSH’s Kearns knows exactly how to tidy up retreating ball and wasn’t much inconvenienced. Wright then got himself yellow carded as the Wolves defended desperately, LSH eschewed more than one opportunity with careless passing, James missed two longish kicks for goal and the anxiety amongst both sets of supporters on the touchline just grew. But the Wolves scrum remained solid, they gave nothing away in the lineout, they counter rucked whenever they could and somehow they held out.

For whatever reasons, the Vikings were sadly under strength for their

visit to Fylde and paid the price accordingly. How much better a side

of fully available first choice picks would have done is open to question. It is a fact though that until they can

put out their very best side against the top six of the Bateman League,

hammerings like this will always be a possibility. According to Bryn Lewis, they were much better against Caldy

where they had several periods of play wfrom which they could have scored. Caldy however were fitter

and ran in the scores in the last quarter.

A glance at the table shows that the mismatch between those at the top and the bottom is still a big problem.

Why on earth don’t the top sides form a Northern Reserve League with their

counterparts from Yorkshire at the very least and with Tynedale and

Blaydon from the North East. Putting huge scores past the likes of

Wilmslow and some of the others is meaningless and can’t do them any

good at all.

Meanwhile, the Developmentals and Ravens both seem to be doing wellbut

in the absence of any reports or information there’s not much to be

said. Frequently when one inquires you get a response along the lines of we scored x tries but I don’t know the names of all the players in the team. Plus ca change, that’s always been

the case in third and fourth team rugby.

In 2009, the current Junior Colts were down to just twelve players through raids from local clubs and a natural drop off.It was crisis time for the team but what we did know is that we had a core of players who were committed to keep the team going. We sat the players down and asked them how we rebuild the team. They made some suggestions, which we implemented like talking to them directly on mobile, twitter and on a Facebook closed group, which we could manage. Pitchero was used just for the parents.

Junior Colts from twelve players to forty four by Phil Howells Around the same time Andrew Gardiner took over the reins, gaining respect from the boys and starting to manage our fixtures by playing teams of a similar level or a bit better to challenge the boys. We realised that if we kept playing the top teams the boys would get demoralised and lose interest. The plan was shared with the team and explained that it would take a while, maybe years to grow the squad again and to be competitive at a higher level. Surprisingly, they all bought into the time plan. Probably the most important emphasis we placed on was FUN. The boys' priority is school rugby and we wanted to provide a more relaxed but solid coaching regime. We found ourselves with a few players that didn’t play at school so introduced Thursday night training specifically to improve the core skills of those players. Tours are another area we concentrated on having a lot of fun. The foreign tour to Mold, the tournament in France and especially the Onesie tour to Gloucester and the recent tour to Lodz in Poland have all been huge successes. Since the low point of 2009, primarily through the boys recruiting skills, we built the squad back up to 26 players. We enjoyed some good Cheshire Cup runs reaching three semi-finals, trwo in the main cup and one in the plate. Unfortunately we just lacked a couple of game-

breakers that can make a huge difference to a team. Everything else was starting to work well. Last year's U15s were also going through a difficult stage just as we had a few years earlier. The task of growing that squad again from U15s would have been huge, so, we approached Helene Evans (coach) about merging the two age groups. We had already held a few joint training sessions together and a merged team played against a Scottish touring team. They trained with us over the summer and it soon became apparent that we had inherited a talented bunch. This season we joined The Junior Colts Raging Bull League at league C, once again making sure we would be playing competitively at the right level. At the beginning of the season Manchester Junior Colts folded and a few of their best players have joined including a backs coach. We also had some speed merchants come from football. A winning start means we’re looking good to challenge for the league. Kirby Lonsdale and Newcastle Staffs will be stern tests but if we can get our strongest teams out we should have a good chance of beating them. The challenge we have now is to keep all 44 of the squad engaged and enthusiastic about the team. We have communicated to all that we will be rotating players and to use the rest days wisely. Catch up with homework, nurse injuries because there are plenty of players available to slot in. From our dark days a few years ago the plan was to grow the squad, make it more fun, manage opposition and expectations, use the boys to recruit through school and social media, and get to Junior Colts with a team that could compete. Don’t forget that it’s the boys who have done the hard yards.Still a long way to go but to quote George Peppard from the A Team "I love it when a plan comes together". Coaching team: Andrew Gardiner (lead and forwards coach), Phil Howells (ex back row coaching backs), Graham Taylor (admin and warm up) and Noel Riley (cultural attaché)

Round three saw seven home wins but the mere statistics hardly describe the excitement and tension as several of the matches were literally only decided at the death. Four of the seven matches had less than one score to separate the sides Altrincham Kersal 36-29 Kirkby Lonsdale AK led 29-12 at half time after four tries, one from Dave Colman and another three from unnamed individuals. AK don’t record that sort of thing on their web site presumably because it’s a team game and nor do they update rugbyroundup which is a shame. But there you are! In reply KL, who also don’t bother much with rugbyroundup, scored two tries from a push over, converted by Tom Picthall, and from flanker Jack Benson. At 15-12 KL were back in the hunt but missed tackles and a breakaway allowed two further scores for the home side. David Barton, Tom Slater and Ben Walker all scored to haul KL back into it at 29-29 as they dominated the second half.. They could feel aggrieved that another Walker touchdown was disallowed and then they had a push over denied when AK collapsed the scrum on their line. In the last play of the game, Kersal then broke out allowing Colman a second try and the home side a highly fortuitous win. Widnes 13-10 Vale of Lune It was a backs to the wall effort by Widnes that eventually kept Vale at bay. They hardly got out of their own half as Vale sought to overturn a 13-5 deficit. Widnes probably had slightly the better of the early stages and went ahead after nineteen minutes when quick hands from Mike Garrity put Gareth Riley in at the corner. Vale came back immediately when Darren Wilson fed winger Macluskie who also scored in the corner. Play ebbed and flowed with both sides having chances until Kevin Leabetter was the beneficiary of quick passing to score for Widnes on the stroke of half time. Matty Smith then landed a penalty immediately after the break to put them 13-5 to the good but it was all Vale after that but it took until the 77th. minute for prop Cowey to cross and Widnes not without alarm were able then to play down the clock. Carlisle 16-12 Warrington The city side went 0-7 adrift when Warrington’s Kevin Jones scored after five minutes but slowly two Barry Earl penalties and tries from Damian Armstrong and Karim Moualan pulled them clear just after half time. They continued to be the more dominant of the two sides until Warrington’s scrum half Tom Wood found a gap in time added on for his side’s second score. It was a much improved Carlisle performance and earned them their first points of the season. The other three games all went convincingly with the territory. Birkenhead Park and Wirral kept up the pace at the top of the table whilst Wigton added to Leigh’s misery. Saturday 28th. September Widnes 36-20 Wigton The home side’s performance was nothing short of spectacular at times writes the Widnes correspondent but equally frustrating at other times. Threatening to run away with it and then having to dig in as though their lives depended on it.

A series of penalties in favour of the home side and a Yellow Card for Wigton was followed by a lineout move and try for Mike Lamb. Almost immediately from the restart, captain Dave Welsh showed a clean pair of heels as he sliced through from 40 metres to score Widnes’ second try. Then,

Page 11: Club President Fixtures and Results 2013 Wolves NIGEL DAY ...files.pitchero.com/clubs/4943/WRUFCMagazineWidnes51013.pdf · September 2013 North 1 West Wilmslow 27-24 Liverpool St

Paul O’Connor suddenly appeared from nowhere on the far side with the ball to race clear down the touchline and to score against the run of play. Wigton were nothing but dogged and persistent but could only manage a Smith penalty after 34 minutes. They then made a bad error at the lineout to which O’Connor was the quickest to react to hack on and score. Wigton still weren’t done for by any means. Despite basic errors, a flow of penalties and possession in their favour enabled stand off Hannabury to slice through for centre Richard Moffatt to finish off and when a second Widnes player got a yellow card, Wigton’s second try soon followed. Their third came from full back Wood. In the meantime though Rob Critchley had dodged his way through for Widnes and Leadbetter then provided the coup de grace at the end. Widnes clearly blow hot and cold but Wigton look a far better outfit than when they were last in this league two seasons ago. Liverpool St. Helens 23-55 Wirral Those of thus who thought that LSHs performance against Wilmslow a fortnight ago was a harbinger of better things to come had better think again. Despite having their fair share of possession and territory to score three tries through Jake Hodson, Rob Dyer and James Laycock, they were always chasing a livewire Wirral side, who once again showed that they’re capable of scoring from any part of the field. An Ali Brown interception got them going, Craig Harvey went over for their second and Colin Dyer took a quick tap penalty for their third and a 10-21 half time lead. After the break LSH scored a penalty and try to pull it back to 18-21 but then Wirral went into turbocharge. They ran in four tries, all from distance, two by winger Baker and one each from Loons and Annetts. Game, set and match! Vale of Lune 55-24 Carlisle The margin of victory by Vale was always likely to be of biggest interest and in scoring eight tries they confirmed that they’ll be a top four side come next April. James Curran got a hat trick. Royle (2), Berry, Higgin and Spavin got the others. It was 24-0 after twenty minutes and scores followed regulalrly after that. Turton converted six of them and a penalty to complete Vale’s afternoon Whenever they had the chance, Carlisle hit back and scored four tries themselves through Graham, Earl, Holmes and Foster , three of them in the second half. Kirkby Lonsdale 27-20 Birkenhead Park Park were most people's favourites for this one but there was always a nagging feeling that Kirkby would eventually reap some reward for their play. They have been a far more competitive side this season than last and it was surely only a matter of time before they started winning and knocking Birkenhead park off the perch at the top of the table will do nicely. Park scored first landing a penalty at the town end but Kirkby soon responded with a try from second row Simon Dowker, who had an interesting first quarter, comprising a spilt start, a try and a yellow card. The dangerous Ben Walker was next on the score sheet and this was followed by Tom Picthall. 17-3 to Kirkby until hall got his second penalty for Park.. Park reduced the deficit to 17-13 before their scrum half was driven over their line and as he spilt the ball both Kirkby props were on to it to claim the score. Back came Park with a second try but it was Kirkby who sealed the win with a final Picthall penalty. On the day, they were the better side and deserved their success. That leaves only Leigh and Warrington who are yet to win a match. All four of Warrington’s games have been away from home for whatever reason so don’t be surprised if their fortune changes on home soil. They are at home today against Kirkby Lonsdale. That could be interesting.

I was at the Cheshire RFU Meeting last week and, apart from the usual

reports, there was a question from Dave Ewing, the Cheshire

representative to the Rugby Union. He would be attending a symposium at

Twickenham in the near future to find out why fewer players are playing

15 a-side rugby and asked for reasons from those attending.

There were many suggestions from the floor: Colts players going off to university and, because there

are not enough teams there, give up. The economic situation; meaning that some players have to work

on Saturdays to earn some money. Not as many Veterans carrying on playing as there used to be and,

particularly, a lack of retired members prepared to help run the clubs.

As the Meeting had already lasted two hours, I didn’t put forward my suggestion, i.e. the cost of

running the club and the lack of support from the RFU for the teams below the top two. One cuts ones

coat according to ones cloth and the rates, utilities, insurance, etc., are one thing, but there is the

subscription to the RFU, another to Cheshire RFU and yet another to the Referees’ Society. Not only

that, but there is a charge of £145.00 for each team needing a Society referee and the referee’s

expenses each week (£70.00 a couple of weeks ago). There is a £95.00 fee to enter the Junior and

Senior Colts into the Raging Bull Colts leagues and, as we found to our cost last season, should a team

drop out because of lack of numbers, there is another £95.00 fine. We really hesitated to enter our

Senior Colts this season because of this, but decided that there were enough Senior Colts from last

season to help last year’s Junior Colts raise a team. I am glad we did, as they have started off the

season well. In my opinion, much of these costs could be covered or shared by the RFU.

On a more positive note, I am pleased to report that my old friend and occasional sparring partner from

Davenport, Martin Wroe, has been elected President of Cheshire RFU. I am sure he will do an

excellent job and I look forward to inviting him to Wilmslow in the near future.

To return to Ben Day. Following the mention in the last programme, Ben wondered where he stood in

the try scoring records and I can tell him that he has now scored the most points, at 400, overtaking

Mike Tinkler who had 390 from 1968 to 81. However, his tries have all been at 5 points each, whereas

Mike is still top of the list, having scored 107 tries; (69 at 3 points and 38 at 4 points) to Ben’s 80. I

think Ben can hold his head high though, as Mike played 282 games to Ben’s 139.

WIDNES Our visitors arrive here lying second in the league, unbeaten but nearly 100 points behind the leaders Wirral on points difference. Their three home wins have all been hard fought affairs. The one against

Vale a fortnight ago was a decidedly edgy affair and the week before they had only edged out Broughton Park by the narrowest of margins right at the end of the game. Against Wilmslow, honours in recent seasons have gone with the territory. The Wolves have travelled badly to Heath Road, last season putting on a wretched performance in a heavy defeat. They recovered the following week though to beat Wirral at home. After last week’s reverse at Broughton Park a bit more of the same that they showed against Wirral would be very welcome to home supporters. Seven months ago, Widnes were still league contenders when they came here but the Wolves were determined to right the wrong of the previous autumn. Mike Clifford scored from a catch and drive after just five minutes. Matty Smith and Bob MacCallum then exchanged penalties before the Wolves

second try. A quick tap by Andy Walker was recycled in the far corner, Richard Hughes made a thrust through the centre before changing his pace to deliver a perfect scoring pass to Ben Day. More pressure followed with only a second MacCallum penalty for reward and an 18-3 half time lead. The second half saw a determined Widnes riposte. Flanker Johnny

Lowe scored from a ruck, Matty Smith followed up a kick ahead for the second try and it then became a duel between the feisty Wilmslow pack and free flowing Widnes backs. By the end it was the forwards ability to pin Widnes back that earned the three penalty chances that MacCallum needed to win what was an excellent game. Will we see more of that today?

North 1 West Saturday 28th. September Broughton Park 28-3 Wilmslow After their early season successes, the Wolves’ shortcomings were badly exposed by a Broughton Park side which cantered to a convincing win at Hough End. Both sides were short of first choice players for all kind of reasons and nobody on the Wilmslow side really knew what to expect from the patch and mend look of their team. Ollie Wilkinson, in the absence of MacCallum, McCall and Harrison, was called up to fill the pivotal No. 10 position. There was nothing whatsoever wrong with his fielding of the ball, his passing and distribution but it would have been expecting too much to suppose that he could be the playmaker that was badly needed. Elsewhere in a back line, containing no natural tactical kicker able to put the ball in positions which will hurt the opposition, the one dimensional nature of their play was easily held in check by the Park defence. Only Lawrence James out on the right wing seems to know how to effectively put boot to ball. Up front, the Wolves once again shaded the set piece scrum but the lineout after a bright start just disintegrated into a complete shambles. In Mike Clifford, the Wolves have probably the best lineout man in the league but if the ball isn’t thrown anywhere near him, then there’s nothing much he can do about it. There was also a suspicion that the Park loose forwards were just a bit quicker to the breakdown than their Wilmslow counterparts and consequently their counter rucking turned over too much Wilmslow ball. The Wolves never seemed to come to terms with the referee’s interpretation of the rucking laws. On another pleasant sunny afternoon, there was a steady North Easterly blowing down the pitch, which the Wolves had to play against in the first half. They started brightly enough and after a couple of forays in Park territory, they earned a penalty after five minutes which James slotted from in front of the posts. Thereafter Park waxed the stronger with the elements behind them and Wilmslow were forced to kick possession away, which merely gave the ball back to Park. Infringements mounted and Park’s Ronan O’Brien was on target after fifteen minutes. Immediately afterwards a Wolves attacking position was squandered with a wayward kick which went nowhere near where it was intended and Park raced the length of the pitch where O’Brien soon had a chance to land his second goal. James had an outside chance of tying things up two minutes later but against the breeze the kick was just beyond his range. The first lineout lost on the Wolves throw then gifted Park’s No. 10 Oliver Lancaster with space for another break out and when the Wolves infringed again, O’Brien accepted the chance to make it 9-3. As half time approached the deficit didn’t look insurmountable but the Wolves were then hit with a double whammy either

side of the break by Parks’ left winger Warren Duffy who scored twice in as many minutes. First Park’s right wing Michael Butt dropped a Wilmslow clearing kick backwards and as the ball bounced about he turned to collect it and catching the defence wrong footed, he was through the gap to release Duffy with an easy run in. In the first play of the second half O’Brien struck a speculative kick for position against the breeze into the Wilmslow half. Let’s be charitable and say that the Wilmslow defenders lost the ball in the sun. Whatever, nobody went for it as it bounced about exactly where Butt had dropped the ball earlier but this time Duffy was the first to react and he gleefully accepted the chance. To come back from 21-3 away from home against a resurgent home side with their tails up was always going to be a tall order. To add to the Wolves’ problems, Park were now plundering the Wolves lineout on virtually every throw. Only James had the wherewithal to use the wind to get the ball upfield as all other clearing kicks were hoovered up and ran back by the eager Park side. Coach Rick Jones rang the changes, Charlie Wilton came off for Simeon Meek, Alex Kaihau replaced Dan Wright and Craig Cooper retired from the fray as the Wolves adjusted their back line up with Lee Jackson on the left wing. The force though was with Park as Butt on the right wing broke out of a tackle and from the ruck on the Wolves line centre Max Proctor crossed for the third try. It was now most definitely a lost cause but the Wolves rallied to have the best of the remaining fifteen minutes. Simon Irving was deemed to have been held up and several other promising positions were lost when the ball was either dropped or turned over. It was one of those days. Nobody really stood out as having made their mark and the coaching team now have the conundrum of deciding which of the reserves to persevere with as they grow into first team rugby and which one’s won’t. The return of Ms McCall and MacCallum from injury is desperately awaited.

Sunday 22nd. September Southport 34-36 Junior Colts Sunday 29th. September Junior Colts 50-5 Kirkby Lonsdale Eccles 39-27 Senior Colts The junior colts continued their winning streak with wins against Southport and Kirkby Lonsdale. At Southport they scored six tries from Ross Hook (2), Will Maslen (2), Fergus Taylor and Ted Merrick. Three were converted by Isaac Jones. In reply Southport also scored six tries but could only convert two of them. Graham Taylor writes that it was generally a scrappy encounter. The Wilmslow boys worked their way into a 31-15 lead early in the second half but mistake after mistake allowed Southport back in with three tries and the visitors were suddenly 31-34 in arrears. In the last ten minutes, they managed to raise their game again, James Clemetson was adjudged to have a foot in touch and then in the final play of the game, Wilmslow won a lineout on the Southport throw and good combination play eventually enabled Ross Hook on his first to score the winner. There were also first appearances for Will Maslen, Cameron Zafar and James Clemetson. About sixty people turned up on a bright morning for the Kirkby game. Kirkby should be commended for honouring the fixture with only eleven players. Under the rules, Wilmslow played twelve but the scrums were uncontested. Scores came regularly for the Wilmslow boys, Dan on 7 minutes, Maz on 9, Jamie on 21, Ross on 22, Maz again on 28, Fez on 29 and then on the half hour the Kirkby boys got onto the scoresheet. Wilmslow made the changes and two more tries quickly followed from Isaac and Rory. It’s 54-5 at halftime and the Kirkby coaches decide they have seen enough and decide to concede. We know though that on their own territory with a full side, they’ll be a totally different proposition.

Next week it’s the long distance haul to Wigtonfor a 3.00pm KO. LOWMOOR ROAD, WIGTON, CUMBRIA, CA7 9QT

Just head up the M6, past Penrith and take the next eit, B5305 to Wigton. Cross over the main A595, bear right to stay on the B5305 and as you enter the town but before you get to it, the ground is on your right.

Simple.

Alickadoos have long met up for a pre match lunch at the Crown pub in Hesketh Newmarket. It brews its own beer and does excellent bar

lunches. About 10 minutes before getting to Wigton you turn off the B5305 to the left on to a minor road to the village. The pub is on the left

as you enter it and about 10 minutes from Wigton’s rugby ground.
