We hope that the new idea of ringing everyone a few days before our event helps you to remember our events, but also get to know a committee member so if you have a good idea for other members to enjoy please tell him or her. As most of you know the. Canterbury & Central South clubs are running the 2014 VW Nationals in Timaru. Everything is going well, but they will need members help on the day to run things. Hope everyone enjoy all our out- ings next year, and happy Dubbing. Ivan. From Penny, To follow on from Ivan’s report the club has had a great last 12 months with lots of well attended events that have ranged from a lunch outing, a city tour, a mystery car rally to a visit to amazing car collection. These were all well supported and enjoyed by the members that went so to the others we hope that you will attend some future events. As this club was formed to bring together people that have a passion for Volkswagens, to swap knowledge that has been gained in either restoration projects or engine running tips or just great kombi camping spots, it is neat to see when we have a good turnout with people sharing their stories. I would like to finish by also thanking the committee, Ivan, Gavin, Phil, Phil, Jeff, Craig, Murray and Evan for all their efforts for the club, for supporting or organising an event when possible, to Phil for producing a great newsletter and Craig for setting up our Facebook page and keeping it up to date as well as updating the website and to Gavin for keeping the accounts in order. We look forward to the next 12 months of more enjoyable VW events so keep checking the website and the Facebook page. Penny Belworthy Acting Club President June & July 2013

Club President Note

From Ivan,

Well with another year gone by and with the club ticking over fairly well I would like to thank the committee as well

as all the members for making& taking part in our past events.

We hope that the new idea of ringing everyone a few days before our event helps you to remember our events, but

also get to know a committee member so if you have a good idea for other members to enjoy please tell him or her. As

most of you know the. Canterbury & Central South clubs are running the 2014 VW Nationals in Timaru.

Everything is going well, but they will need members help on the day to run things. Hope everyone enjoy all our out-

ings next year, and happy Dubbing.

Ivan.

From Penny,

To follow on from Ivan’s report the club has had a great last 12 months with lots of well attended events that have

ranged from a lunch outing, a city tour, a mystery car rally to a visit to amazing car collection. These were all well

supported and enjoyed by the members that went so to the others we hope that you will attend some future events.

As this club was formed to bring together people that have a passion for Volkswagens, to swap knowledge that has

been gained in either restoration projects or engine running tips or just great kombi camping spots, it is neat to see

when we have a good turnout with people sharing their stories.

I would like to finish by also thanking the committee, Ivan, Gavin, Phil, Phil, Jeff, Craig, Murray and Evan for all

their efforts for the club, for supporting or organising an event when possible, to Phil for producing a great newsletter

and Craig for setting up our Facebook page and keeping it up to date as well as updating the website and to Gavin for

keeping the accounts in order.

We look forward to the next 12 months of more enjoyable VW events so keep checking the website and the Facebook

page.

CBD tour around Christchurch

Christchurch certainly put on a fantastic day for the Canterbury VW Club to go on a tour around the CBD area. We

all met at the Blue Pallet Pavilion where the beetles outnumbered the kombis which was cool to see.

Murray Hamilton had planned at great route first heading down Durham St into Cambridge Tce then on past the

Museum then around Gloucester St to our first stop to have a wander along the recently opened New Regency

Street. About half the businesses have reopened so it was great to see a wee bit of Christchurch alive again.

We then carried on around a big loop taking in Barbades St, Madras, Tuam and Lichfield although the convoy got a

bit separated as Tuam wasn’t open. But we all made it to the next stop which was the start up mall for a look as a

lot more streets are reopened around there now. From here a few of the party had other commitments so left us

while another group carried on to the Monday Room on Moorhouse which was very pleasant. Another successful

Canterbury VW club outing!

confirmed the Autoworld/VW NZ have signed up to the naming rights with about $9500.00, Repco another spon-

Craig Munro reported on the website and Facebook page. The web site http://www.canterburyvwclub.co.nz/ has

been updated to include a gallery page for members and a link to our Facebook page as well as upcoming and past

events and copies of the newsletters.

The Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/CanterburyVolkswagenEnthusiastClub?fref=ts is slowly gaining

support with 54 likes at the moment, it is a good way to get information out to everyone.

At this point I would like to thank Phil Bracefield who is stepping down from the committee for all his hard work

in producing our bi-monthly newsletter and his efforts while on the committee. He will remain a Canterbury mem-

ber and is still on the Nationals organising committee. Craig Munro has kindly volunteered to take over the news-

From the Telegraph 18-6-2013

Volkswagen's Golf family hatch has taken the title of Car of the Year 2013. Volkswagen's new Golf didn’t just win the 2013 Car of the Year award, it blasted its seven-strong shortlisters into

outer space.

In taking this year’s Car of the Year title with 414 points out of the 1,450 on offer, Volkswagen’s seventh-generation

family hatch amassed more than twice as many points as the second-placed car, the Toyota GT86/Subaru BRZ.

The rest of the field, Volvo’s V40, Ford’s B-Max, Mercedes-Benz’s A-class, Renault’s Clio, Peugeot’s 208 and Hyun-

dai’s i30, followed on respectively. The Golf was the clear winner amongst the 58 judges across 22 European coun-

tries.

“I am a little bit proud,” said Ulrich Hackenberg, VW board member responsible for research. “It’s a big honour to get

this prize.”

This is the second time the Golf has won the award; the last time was in 1992 with the third-generation model, which

amassed 276 points ahead of the Vauxhall Astra and Citroën ZX.

Another interesting bit of information:

Wolfsburg, 2013-06-14

Volkswagen Group delivers 3.87 million vehicles in period to May*

• 5.9 percent* rise in deliveries from January to May

• 816,500 units handed over in May / +6.9 percent*

• Group Board Member for Sales Christian Klingler: "Development of Group

Brands is stable. Markets worldwide remain difficult and uneven."

The Volkswagen Group delivered 3.87 (January-May 2012: 3.65; +5.9 percent)* million vehicles from January to

May. The company handed over 816,500 (May 2012: 763,900; +6.9 percent)* vehicles to customers in the month of

May. "Overall, development of the Volkswagen Group brands in the period to May was stable, albeit at different lev-

els. In particular Audi, Volkswagen Passenger Cars and Porsche as well as SEAT maintained delivery levels in spite

of continuing difficult market conditions", Group Board Member for Sales Christian Klingler said in Wolfsburg on

Friday. Klingler went on to say: "Meanwhile, developments on markets worldwide remain uneven and are character-

ized by continuing economic uncertainty, above all in Western Europe. In contrast, the sales situation in China re-

mains encouraging."

Club member profile...

Simon Hall & Vanessa Fowler Hall

We nickname ourselves the Brady Bunch – Simon Hall & Vanessa Fowler-Hall and between us we have 4 children -

twin 16 year old girls (Danielle & Courtney), a 14 year old boy (Ben) and a 12 year old girl (Cate).

We live on a lifestyle block in Mandeville with 4 horses, an adorable but stupid boxer dog and a ginga cat. And more

importantly we have plenty of space for the man cave full of my toys.

So the most recent addition to our family is our 1972 1302s. Vanessa and I were on holiday in the deep south last year

and somehow ended up buying our beetle while we were down there. Because I was driving the work car with caravan

in tow, Vanessa had the privilege of making the maiden journey in the beetle from Invercargill to home. She did the

whole trip without complaint (Vanessa – not the car) and that’s despite the radio not working and the passenger win-

dow seals having fallen down into the bottom of the door so it was pretty noisy and draughty. But the beetle per-

formed faultlessly (until a month later when it spat No.3 spark plug out of the head!) It was standard when we bought

it, but since then I’ve lowered it all round, widened the rear wheels and put skinny tyres on the front, new exhaust,

gear shift, sports steering wheel (and put lots of stickers on the windows, much to Vanessa’s disgust J)

My other toys are;

1979 Mercedes 250 which is currently lacking an engine and tranny. They are both on the workshop floor (and

have been for about 2 years in various states of disassembly!) but I hope to have this running again in time for sum-

mer. 2002 Ford Falcon XR8 ute. This has been lowered, mags, headers and custom twin exhaust and shaker hood scoop.

It’s a bit quicker than the beetle (okay, a lot quicker) but strangely enough not as much fun to drive as the beetle.
