The 37 year old Welshman claims his second European Tour Scalp with a one shot victory margain over Justin Rose in Abu Dhabi

TOUR VICTORY

Q: Many congratulations, your first victory is always special, but given the strength of the field this week, this one must be as good as The Irish Open. JD: Yeah, awesome. Yeah, it was a tough field, brutal golf course, and yeah, to be sat here is quite surreal.Q: When you missed that putt on 18, did you think, probably going to have to go into a playoff? JD: Yeah, to be honest I thought it’s probably going to be a playoff. You know, I hit a great putt. I just miss-read it. Just didn’t break. At the first, I thought I hit a great putt, as well, which just went on a little bit.It was annoying to finish like that to be dead honest with you, but you need a little luck sometimes in golf to win. I’ve had tournaments snatched away from me before, so to finish like that was not quite the plan but stood here with the trophy and I’m very happy.Q: What’s it mean to hold off somebody of the quality of Justin Rose down the stretch?JD: Yeah, it was awesome. I mean, to be honest, most fields we play in, everyone, all the play-ers are great, of a high standard. This week in particular, this field was exceptionally strong.I just sort of got my head down today and just kept playing aggressive and played my own game. I stuck to me; same

routine as I have been doing previous three days, and in the end, I came victorious through just doing the same things I was doing all week. It just putts the icing on the cake to do it in a field of this quality.Q: How important was the vic-tory you had before in terms of getting you over the line today? JD: Yeah, I felt particularly calm all day really and played really good golf. I just felt, yeah, I just felt particularly calm today. I felt pretty good all week and played well all week.Today was just, you know, I just felt really comfortable and I could see all the shots and knew what to do and did it. It was slightly annoying to not birdie or par the last, as would the plan be, but wasn’t to be, but thoroughly pleased with the week overall.Q: I presume you’re pleased you didn’t go to PGA TOUR school; you were getting close to doing it?JD: Yeah, I was going to go, but I set myself a target back in May of making sure I was well inside the Top-50 in the world after the two events in China. I wasn’t, and so I had to stay and play in Dubai to make sure I was in the Top-50 in the world to make sure I got in the Masters, etc., and other tournaments and finished short of the Top 120 in the Money List to make sure I got into Doral. I wasn’t able to do that.

Q: I know you briefly touched on comparing your first win last year to this one, just wondering if you can elaborate on that, obviously the first one is very special, but the quality of field here was phenomenal and first time being over here, can you elaborate a little bit further?JD: Yeah, it was an awesome field, one of the best fields I’ve ever played in. You know, to win here is crazy, after the start of the week, I played the Pro-Am and thought this golf course is just too difficult (laughter). The wind was difficult, it was very strong, and obviously you’re not quite an tournament game playing the Pro-Am. You’re just seeing the golf course to find out where you need to be hitting it, and I couldn’t hit it in the places I wanted to.But as the tournament came around, the wind died down a little, and I was able to hit more fairways than I did in the Pro-Am, say. I said to the guys in the Pro-Am, you know, if I could somehow get a Top-10 out of this week, it would be a mira-cle. And to win it, saying this, it’s hilarious (laughing). You never know in this game, really, you don’t. Well Congratulations for making it win number two. The best of luck for the rest of the season and we hope to speak to you again soon in the Winners Circle

Jaguar F-Type

NEW CAR REVIEW

The Jaguar F-Type was unveiled in production form at the Paris Motor Show in September 2012 before going on sale in mid 2013. Smaller than the XK, the F-Type will also be cheaper with prices expected to start at around the £55,000 mark with top versions costing £77k.

Based on the C-X16 concept car shown at the Frankfurt Motor Show last year, Jaguar says it has accelerated development of the F-Type following a very positive response to the concept car. The two-seater convertible is currently undergoing its final on-road testing around Jaguar’s Castle Bromwich plant, where it will also be built.

Utilising Jaguar’s industry-leading knowledge of all-aluminium construction, the F-TYPE will launch as a convertible, and a strict two-seater with the focus uncompromisingly on delivering driver reward. A range of petrol engines will be available – including a new powerplant family – and all will deliver stunning sports car performance.

All models get the same eight-speed Quickshift automatic gearbox but instead of the trademark Jaguar gear selector dial, the F-Type gets a more conventional gear lever, called SportShift, which lets the driver change gear manually as do steering wheel mounted paddles. The gearbox has been tuned for the F-Type to give short and quick shifts and will also learn driving styles. So if you’re driving with a bit of urgency it will make the shifts more aggressive and hold the gears till higher up the rev range. It also knows if you’re going through a corner and will hold the correct gear for the exit.

The S versions have an active exhaust system which opens valves when accelerating to make theexhaust note even louder. We certainly feel with the looks and performance offered by this new Jaguar, that many people in the market for a Mercedes SL, Porsche Boxster S or even the Aston V8 Vantage will be persuaded to visit the local Jaguar Dealership >>

So why the Jag over its rivals? First up, it has lashings of performance. The basic F-type, with its 336bhp supercharged V6, costs £58,500 and takes 5.3sec to reach 62mph from standstill. Choose the £67,500 375bhp V6 S, and that benchmark sprint drops to 4.9sec. Go for the £79,950 eight-cylinder S, packing 489bhp, and the chase to 62mph is swatted in just 4.3sec. Top speeds are 161, 171 and 186mph respectively. That said, the SLK55 AMG has plenty of performance, but it doesn’t make for a tool that neatly and incisively bisects corners. ‘We’ve worked hard to make sure responses to steering, throttle and brakes are absolutely immediate, a task made far easier by the F-type’s rigid aluminium structure,’ says Jaguar’s dynamics guru Mike Cross. ‘It’s precise and exciting, and it sounds fantastic!’As Mike Cross says, core to the F-type’s claimed ability is its aluminium structure. This keeps weight down to 1597kg for the base V6 - though that’s still a hefty 247kg heavier than a Boxster S - topping out at 1665kg for the V8. The Jag’s architecture helps provide a stiff backbone for the all-round double wishbone suspension, enabling Crossy’s team to precisely fine-tune it to ensure the F-type responds rapidly and progressively to driver inputs.

The engineers have strived to get the best weight dis-tribution, locating the battery and washer bottle in the boot for example, and funneling as much mass as possible between the wheels to boost agility and stability. If you get stuck for conversation with a Jag-uar engineer, play hunt the weight saving to discover how they shaved 2 kilos from the windscreen, 5 kilos from the engine and bumper mounts, 24 kilos from the seats and so on.

As all bedroom engineers know, reducing weight not only enhances performance but boosts econo-my. Throw in stop/start across the range, and the V6 models conceivably return just over 30mpg Power is sent to the rear wheels by an eight-speed automatic transmission, which sounds at odds with the car’s character.

Paddle-operated and dubbed ‘Quickshift’, the transmission features a locking clutch in second gear and above, sidelining the torque converter to ensure rapid-fire shifts. Clever electronics monitor how the car is being driven, and can select up to 25 different transmission programmes to ensure the drivetrain is in sync with even the most ballistic driver.Likewise the throttle is blipped on downchanges, to smooth shifts and make owners sound like driving gods.

The V6 S gets a mechanical diff to feed torque to the rear wheel with the most grip, while the V8 S’s is electronically controlled. There’s also a dynamic launch mode for OTT traffic light-getaways (sorry, track use), and an active exhaust which amplifies the exhaust note to overload the senses. And the F-type will be the most configurable Jaguar yet, with the driver able to tweak individual steering, throttle, transmission and stability control thresholds, as well as suspension settings with an adaptive dynamics system.

Admittedly this kind of kit has long been on Porsches, Audi’s and BMW’s, but it’s great to see it being uniformly deployed on a Jag. Hell, there’s even a g-force meter and lap timer, Porsche Sport Chrono Pack-style.

The F-type is a punchy-looking car, all athletic pro-portions rather than glitzy details. The squared-off mouth is in keeping with the XF and XJ grilles, and while the vertical headlamps look a bit Mercedes SLS, Callum flipped them from horizontal to en-compass the character line that comes off the brake ducts and travels through lamp and bonnet before fading on the flanks. The other key character line accentuates the powerful rear haunches, linking to the cliff-face rear end. Boxster-girlie it is not.

V6 cars get twin central exhausts, while the V8 gets the quadpipe treatment seen on today’s R models. Wheel sizes range from 18 to 20 inches.

The soft-top roof takes 12sec to fold away at speeds of up to 30mph. Inside there are twin analogue dials, like a proper old-school sports car should have, and a seating position almost as low as the Boxster’s. If you’re scouring the dashboard for air vents, give up now: they’re hidden behind a pop-up panel on the dash top. Housing them in the dashboard would have increased its height, and impacted on the seating position.

The central tunnel houses a stick shift inspired by fighter planes (rather than the rotary gear selector on Jag saloons), and a grab handle in case the pace gets too much for passengers. And that’s eminently possible.

For in the words of Ian Callum: ‘I drove the V6 F-type on track, then got into my [186mph] XK-RS. I love that car dearly, but I found myself wanting to get back in the F-type...’

Course Architect Gil Hanse received a public bashing

49 years ‘young’ and topping the Tour in 2012

Page 11: Clubhouse Golf Magazine Issue 7

The Fans favorite Mr Jimenez is set to sit out up to six months of the 2013 season after breaking his leg skiing in the Sierra Nevada Mountains in Spain. The 49 Year old lost control and was sent crashing to the ground. “I lost control and fell,” Jimenez said. “I felt a huge stab of pain and I knew straight away I had broken something.”

After being operated on in Malaga Miguel said “I broke the top of the tibia in my right leg, just where it meets the knee, and they put in two pins,” he said.“It will take three, four or five months to recover and be able to return to competition. I was play-ing very well but these things happen in life.

Injury Blow for MAJ

At the tender age of 48 years and 318 days, the Spaniard rolled back the years and set a new record by becoming the oldest winner on the European Tour by claiming the Hong Kong Open title. Miguel takes charge of the title from the spring pup that was Des Smyth who notched up victory at the 2001 Madeira Islands Open, 284 days the younger than that of Miguels victory.

The Spaniards career has now seen him top the pile in 19 European Tour Events, and by winning this title has now made it a hat trick of Hong Kong Open victories. His previous success’s came during the 2005 and 2008 Opens.

OK, so admittedly, Vietnam is probably not the first choice for a Golfing Holiday. However the much undiscovered paradise on offer could certainly become a major Golfing destination.

Officially known as the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, the Vietnamese nation has certainly emerged from bitter war. Viet-nam now enjoys strong economic growth and with its long South China Sea coastline and river deltas, the country can now focus on its pure and natural beauty. Divine beaches, towering moun-tains and vibrant cities, it is no wonder Vietnam is fast becoming one of the world’s most exciting

destinations.

In 2007, at Kings’ Island Golf Club, the Vietnam Golf Associ-ation was formed and there are now more than 5,000 registered Vietnamese golfers but the vast majority are either foreigners or ex-pats. Vietnam can now boast around 25 golf courses with many more in the construction stages. With its varied topogra-phy and long coastline, we expect Vietnam to become a serious golf destination in the not too distant future.

The 13 hour flying time from the UK will however test even the most avid of Golfers, however if

you are willing to make the trip then you certainly will not be disappointed. When searching for Golfing destinations, in many cases Price is King! Obviously a long haul flight to Vietnam is certainly not going to be cheap, however when you arrive in this beautiful country you will be treated like Royalty, for the price of a week-end stay in a Bognor Regious Caravan Park.

The Golf courses found within Vietnam can only be described as beautiful. Golf Coast Vietnam brings together some of the finest golfing experiences available in Asia. The Colin Montgomerie de-

Danang Golf ClubThe truly magnificent Dunes course, designed by the one and only ‘Shark’ Greg Norman, was winner of the Best New Course at the 2010 Asia Pacific Golf Sum-mit. In 2010 Golf Magazine USA also called DGC one of the top 15 golf courses to open worldwide.

This breathtaking Dunes, 7,176 yard Par 72 course weaves its

way through the Central Coast’s newest track of rugged sand dunes that meets with a stretch of beach that Forbes magazine voted as one of the world’s 10 most luxurious beaches. The course’s signature par 3-16th hole backs on to this famous beach with views of Cham Island in the distance.

The Danang Golf Club is located 15 minutes south of Danang and lies near the ancient trading port of Hoi An, which for centuries possessed the largest harbour in Southeast Asia. The course is a 15 minute drive from Danang’s International Airport. The club’s many amenities include a prac-

The Golf Club is the centre piece of Laguna Lang Co, a destination resort complex comprising seven hotels including the Banyan Tree Lang Co & Angsana Lang Co Resorts, a boutique shopping area and private resort residences.

Montgomerie LinksVoted Best Golf Course in Viet-nam in 2010 & 2011, Montgom-erie Links is located alongside the stunning Ha My beach and a short drive from Danang’s Inter-national Airport.

The course boasts a stunning 7,100 yard Par 72 Championship Golf Course, and was designed by legendary 2010 Victorious European Ryder Cup Captain and eight-time European Tour Order of Merit winner Colin Montgom-erie – better known as Monty to his worldwide fan base. The over-arching design philosophy behind a Colin Montgomerie golf course is to work closely with the natural characteristics of the site. Montgomerie Links live up to this expectation with massaged mas-sive greens and rippled fairways amongst a stunning backdrop.

Montgomerie links facilities in-cluding 18 holes, a well-equipped 30 bay undercover driving range and a stunning contemporary clubhouse providing the perfect setting with views over the 18th hole, famed Marble Mountains and distant highlands

TOUR VICTORY

Q: Many congratulations, season couldn’t get off to a better start for 2013.LO: Yes, it’s a great start. Some-how I managed to win the first one of the season. So it’s a great start. I knew I had to come out and get my name up there, get the score up there, and after 5-down, made it up after 12 holes, I was really chuffed about that. You know, just played really well all day. Hit great shots and left a little short putt on 16 which was a combination of a little miss-read and pushed it slightly. You know, then next thing I saw on 18-- I thought I played really well. Q: That win has rocketed you to no.4 in the world, your highest ranking in your career, how does that feel? LO: Yeah, the top spot is a tough one I think at the moment, but if I can try to make it to No.2, and then I guess I’ll try to get to No. 1Q: It was the third win in a row for you in South Africa, obvi-ously being at home must have a great impact on your gameLO: Well, early, starting in your own country, you feel a bit more relaxed in front of your home crowd and the environment and everything. The last few years have been really good for South Africa.Q: What will it take to get to Rory? Do you need to find something extra in your game or

is it just more consistency?LO: You have to ask him almost. Obviously he’s in a great spot and he’s swinging it well, and he’s far ahead from No.2. So, you know, even if I or Tiger or Luke, anyone plays really well, you know, Rory is still playing well. It will be tough to catch him.But it’s all going to come down to the majors. If I can try and get a major this year, one, or two even, then the difference will be the majors, because it’s got the big points. Q. What is this years plan for Augusta?LO: At the moment, I’m playing it the week before and I’m going to go later to the tournament. But yeah, I’m just going to try and handle it as a normal tournament. But you know, I never like to have big expecta-tions before the tournament. I like to start the tournament and then if I feel my game is there and I’m playing really well, then you know, everything starts -- to get that going and that attitude where I feel I’ve got a good chance this week.Q. Of the prizes won this season, we understand you received an excavator for your farm. What is the best, the Volvo Champion or the excavator?LO: Obviously the win is great to start the year off. But I’m going to enjoy that Excavator on my farm, I can tell you that!

Q: So what else do you need on your farm? Surely by now the expense of the farm equipment has been covered by winnings? LO: Yeah, I’ve got a few things that I need to do, and after that, I’ll find something to do, don’t worry. I’ll find something to play around with. I think if I buy anything, I’ll ask my wife-- (laughter).Q: Back to the victory, going into the final round you had a 5 shot deficit over Scott Jamieson, did you have a number in mind that you had to shoot in order to put the pressure on?LO: At first I tried just to make as many birdies-- I felt if I get it to 18-under, I had a good shot. You know, I made bogey and I saw Scott made bogey as well and at the end made two good pars on 17, 18.Got off it a great start and can only go on from hereQ: The Crowd were very vocal for you out there. How much does that help?LO: It was great. Starting out be-hind, you don’t have that much pressure and wanted to see if I could make loads of birdies to start with. When I got to the 9th I was one behind and then the crowd really got into it. By the time I got to 12, I was leading by one and it was great to see them so pumped up.Well done again Louis for the great start to the year

To design Callaway’s latest driver, the 2013 Razr Fit Xtreme, company engineers broke down the key ingredients of its most successful drivers models, realigning them with new technology that makes the Razr Fit Xtreme lower spinning, more forgiving and deliver more ball speed than its predecessor, the 2012 Razr Fit driver. The Razr Fit Xtreme is also Callaway’s widest ranging driv-er offering according to Evan Gibbs, manager of performance analysis and club configuration for Callaway. This is because the lower-lofted Razr Fit Xtreme drivers (8.5 degrees, 9.5 degrees and 10.5 degrees) have different performance characteris-tics than the higher-lofted drivers (11.5 degrees and 13 degrees).Like the Razr Fit, the Razr Fit Xtreme driver allows golfers to adjust the face angle to one of three settings: neutral, open and closed. But the lower-lofted and higher-lofted models have two very different appearances at address. One of the most important features of the Razr Fit Xtreme drivers to consumers could potentially be the stock shaft offerings. Many OEMs install stripped-down versions of popular shafts in their drivers that have altered characteristics. For Callaway’s newest lineup, the company decided to use an unmodified Aldila Trinity shaft, as well as unmodified Matrix Black Tie7M3 shaft. The Matrix shaft alone carries a £200-plus price tag at retail, making the retail price of the Razr Fit Xtreme all the more impressive. .RRP: £329.99

2012 was quite the year for Northern Irelands Rory Mcilroy. He claimed the USPGA by a whopping 8 shots, Victory in the Ryder Cup, Won the Honda Classic, Deutche Bank Championship and the BMW Championship, spent the majority of the year with the impressive title of World Number 1 and was voted Golf Writers Golfer of the year. Not a bad season by anyones high standards. However January 2013’s Nike Sponsorship announcement has somewhat put the success of 2012 into history.

Q: The unveiling of your sort of Nike signage was a

pretty glitzy and glamorous affair but do you some-times have to pinch yourself how far you’ve come in

so few years?RORY McILROY: Yeah, for sure. If I had of sat and talked to you guys in September 2007 when I just turned pro at The Belfry, you know, I wouldn’t have thought that I would be sitting here as a

two-time Major Champion No. 1 in the world and doing everything that I’ve done in the game already. It’s been quite a lot faster than I thought it was going to happen. But you know, it just shows what you can do when you practise hard and you work hard and hopefully

‘just to be a part of a Nike ad like that was a pretty cool thing for me to do’

Page 29: Clubhouse Golf Magazine Issue 7

it’s an inspiration to a lot of young kids out there that they can go and do the same thing.

Q: Great with the Nike, it was very nice, but can you tell how was it done, can you tell me be-hind-the-scenes stuff? RORY McILROY: I’m not sure I can tell you. I don’t know how much they want me to give away but all I can say is it was great fun to be a part of, and growing up watching some very iconic Nike adverts with dif-ferent athletes, Wayne Rooney or Nadal or Cristiano Ronaldo, even like the Brazilian soccer team, playing football through the airport, those sort of things. So just to be a part of a Nike ad like that was a pretty cool thing for me to do.

Q: The dynamic’s changed a little bit now, you’re the favorite, you’re No. 1, the betting line is all tilted your way and Tiger’s No.2. I’m just won-dering whether that dynamic makes any differ-ence to you, whether you approach it differently, mentally, that sets things up at all differently or expectations, etc., etc.? RORY McILROY: No, I mean, it doesn’t really make a difference to me. I’ve always had high expectations of myself, and every time I come into a tournament, I want to feel like I have a chance to win. And if people think I have more of a chance to win than anyone else, that’s fine, but I know that I’m going to have to play really good golf this week to have a chance and that’s what I want to try and do. It’s no different; I’ll try and approach every week the same way.

Q: Regardless of the fact that the figures that you have been given vary wildly and probably we’ve got them wrong, but the point is, it’s an awful lot of money. Are there any downsides, and so, what are they, to being given such a huge amount of money at such a young age?RORY McILROY: I mean, again, I’m just concen-trating on playing golf. You know, all the finan-cial side and everything like that will take care of itself. I’m in it to try and win trophies and they are worth more to me than any contract is.

Q: There is a bit more to it than that. You know approximately, or you either know exactly how much it is or you only have a rough idea, but my point is, what downsides are there, what could go wrong with such a huge amount of money?RORY McILROY: I don’t know, bad investments or-- (laughter) I really can’t answer that. I don’t know.

Q: Two golf nerd questions. How is the ball you’re playing now different than the old one, and you said that you’re longer with the driver; is that the case with the irons and how much work do you have to do to dial in the distances still? RORY McILROY: Yeah, this ball that I’m playing, I found it was much more stable in the wind. It didn’t climb on me just as much, and I think we were talking about that last night. I spin the ball quite a lot, and I sort of need a ball that doesn’t spin that much, especially when it’s windy. It looks like it might be a bit breezy this week so that can help me.

INTERVIEW

Rory claims the 2012 USPGA

Page 30: Clubhouse Golf Magazine Issue 7

I think with this technology and this golf ball with the resin core, making the core lighter, they are able to make the perimeter of it a little heavier which makes it a little more stable in the air, so that can only help. With the driver, I’ve picked up, you know, on average, two or three miles an hour more ball speed, sometimes, if I go after one I can get it up into the 180s, which I was never really able to do before. That’s been a big help. And the spin rate is great, because when it hits the ground, it’s still-- it goes. So hopefully that will be obvious this week and I can hit enough fairways to take advantage of maybe a little more length.

Q: What about your distance control of the irons? RORY McILROY: Yeah, I’m probably getting one or two miles an hour more ball speed with the irons, too, but I guess you don’t really-- I mean, you hit balls on the range and you know how far you’re hitting it but I guess you don’t really know in tournament play because it feels like you hit it a little further in a tournament because the adrenaline is there and you’re maybe pumped up a little more. But it’s something that JP and I will sort of gauge on the golf course once we get going and once we get used to it a little more.

Q: As you build up towards the Masters, is this a more important preseason and early part to the golf season because of the switch and the new clubs, because normally, you’re of the impression that you don’t necessarily need that much range time and you can play on instincts, and then when you get to the majors on a different note, have you thought about your signature color for the final day, given that Tiger has already taken red?RORY McILROY: I Need to get to the final day first. I think this run-up to the Masters this year is probably going to be a little better for me than the last couple.Even in 2011, it seemed to work pretty well for 63 holes. I took three weeks off before and did the same last year, but this year I’m playing-- so I’ll play in Houston and then take a week off and then play again, so you know, I’ll have a little bit more competitive play going into the Mas-ters, which I think will help me.

Q: I’ve been told by another Nike player that when Tiger plays in a tournament, they are not allowed to wear a red shirt on the last day; is that written into

your contract? RORY McILROY: I couldn’t tell you. But I mean, I don’t-- I’m not sure. I mean, I’ve won in red before. I’m not saying that’s the color I want to play in on the last day but--

Q: You may want to check that?RORY McILROY: Yeah, I guess so. I’d rather just wear something that goes with green. (Laughter).

Q: Tiger was talking about the relationship with the two of you and how it started last year when you played the nine-hole practise round, could you talk about how it’s grown in the last year?RORY McILROY: Yeah, we have spent more time together, which started here last year, just because we have been paired in tournaments; and if not been paired, been in tee times that are close to each other and seen each other on the range a lot or whatever. It’s been great; it’s been great to get to know him. Before this time last year, we would say hello in passing but not really anything else. I think once Ti-ger sort of gets to know you and trusts you, I guess, and let’s you in, then it’s great. We get on really well. We share the same interests. We are both big sports fans and that’s sort of the bulk of our conversations is about sports. It’s great to just spend time with him and pick his brain about a few things if I feel I need to, but it’s a relationship that’s definitely based on respect, because you know, he’s been a huge hero of mine growing up and he’s done some incredible things in golf. I think he respects me for what I’ve done on the golf course, too. So it’s good.

Q: You said you talked a lot about sports with Tiger; did you ever try any other sports than golf with him and what would happen if you go to the tennis court?RORY McILROY: I haven’t tried to play any other sports with him. I’m not sure what his tennis game

is like but I’m sure mine’s not great, so I think we’d probably have a great match, maybe. But yeah, I’ve played a little bit of soccer growing up-- football, soccer-- I can’t believe I just said soccer, oh, my God (grimacing). Football. Football. Sorry. (Laughter).

Oh No, Youve become American!Well on that note I think that calls time for us (laugh-ter) Good luck with the season and the new bats!

We all know that it is vital to network effectively to succeed in business, however the traditional forms of networking have in many peoples opinion long past there expiration date. The common impression of collecting as many business cards as possible with little or no intention of following up on any form of business has put many successful business men and women off attending these networking groups or events. So why can’t networking firstly be enjoyable, secondly be effective and thirdly be in a relaxed environment? Well it can be and now is! Clubhouse Golf Magazine are proud to offer business networking days throughout South Wales. Our philosophy is simple. We only accept company directors or decision makers into our network, meaning the time spent together is effective and gives our members the opportunity to develop and maintain contacts and relationship with the people they would like to deal with.Unlike traditional networking events we do not encourage members to sell sell sell at the events, but more so to enjoy the company of like minded individuals. The format of our events are simple. We generally meet after lunch at the golf club of choice. All business cards are placed into a bowl and you are drawn at random to find your playing partners for the day. 18 holes of golf are completed and on arrival a meal is served and presentations of winners are conducted. On some occasions we will invite a guest speaker for a 10 minute talk and then members are free to mingle and network (or just head to the bar) This relaxed atmosphere gives our members the ability to get to know each other and develop prosperous business relationships. There are no membership fees or commitment to attend every event. Just visit our website and select which event or events you would like to attend.

2013’s Home of

THE OPENMUIRFIELDIf I were going for brevity I could sum up this review in a few words: Muirfield is one of the finest golf courses in the world. the Solar System and probably the entire Milky Way. But that’s not all Muirfield is--it’s more than a great golf course and a superb example of Scottish links golf. I feel its importance lies in its connection to the history and tradition of golf. More than a golf course, Muirfield is a golf club made up of a group of individ-uals--The Honorable Company of Edinburgh Golfers--who have carried on a tradition dating back to 1744. Imagine--1744! When the U.S.A. was only a dream in the mind of a few extraordinary thinkers, a group of men were already meeting in Edinburgh to draw up some rules of golf. They were meeting to discuss and codify the original thirteen rules of golf before any practical steam engine was in use. For heaven’s sake, this golf club predates even the discovery and identification of hydrogen and nitrogen!

Muirfield is the first golf course to be designed in two concen-tric, opposing loops. The first 9 holes proceed clockwise along the outside edge while the back 9 run counter clockwise in the

Page 35: Clubhouse Golf Magazine Issue 7

inner part. It works out that only three consecutive holes (#s 3, 4 and 5) run in the same direction. That means the wind coming off the North Sea is a constant factor in club selection. And my, oh my, does this make for some interest-ing golf! The layout of this amaz-ing course is difficult enough even without wind. Tom Watson feels “…there is not a weak hole on this course.” With thick rough and cavernous bunkers, it’s a test for even the most accomplished golfer. If you’re a mid-handicap-per, you’ll feel as if you’re sitting behind the wheels of a Ferrari after having driven a Volkswagen Beetle all your life.

Although there are numerous great holes at Muirfield, my personal favorite comes at the sixth, a long 469-yard, slightly dog-legged par four. There are four well placed fairway bunkers which force drives out to the right. The fairway itself is undu-lating and can generate testing lies from which to hit a long

second. Nevertheless, the green is a generous size and good shots are usually reward. Although tough, this hole is a real gem with a touch of everything. It demands both length and accuracy and the added feature of the dry stone dyke adds that little something extra which appeals to me. Enjoy this hole before focusing on the more celebrated eighth and ninth.

The eighth is yet another won-derful par four with over a dozen well placed fairway bunkers. Keep left for there are penal bunkers down the right waiting to catch even the longest hitters. The approach shot is deceptive as the bunkers which appear to protect the front of the green are a good thirty yards short of the front edge. Accordingly, make sure you have enough club for your second as a sand save from thirty yards is a big ask. Shorter hitters would again be advised to play for a five rather than risk the carry.

Muirfield is a Golf Course that

has become sinonimous with The Open Championship has been held at this great venue fifteen times. 2002 was the previous visit to Muirfield where current defending Open champion Ernie Els lifted the Claret Jug.

Aside from the Open, Muirfield has also hosted The Amateur Championship (ten times), the 1973 Ryder Cup, the 1959 and 1979 Walker Cups, the 1952 and 1984 Curtis Cups, and many other important tournaments.

Since the 1959 visit of The Open, Muirfield has grown from 6,806 yards to now 7,109 from the championship tees in order to remain a tough challenge for the worlds Golfing Elite. This par 71 course generally as a CSS of 74. This in my opinion shows just how tough a test of Golf Muirfield really is.

End of an Era for Peter Johnson PGA Professional

You will be challenged to find a golfer in South Wales that does not know the name of Peter Johnson. For over 40 years, Peter has developed an unrivaled reputation for his knowledge of golf especially in Wales He was professional at Cardiff Golf Club for 23 years and initiated the development of The Vale of Glamorgan Golf Club in 1992 following hissuccessful development of St. Marys Golf Club. Both the Vale and St. Marys Golf Clubs were started by Peter as green field sites and he was responsible for achieving the planning, design and construction of the golf courses as well as putting the infrastructure in place to create the smooth running operation of both clubs. For the past 15 years, Peter has been involved in the development and design of many golf clubs including Carmarthen, St. Mary’s at Pencoed, The Lake and the Wales National at the Vale of Glamorgan. More recently Peter added a further 6 holes to Coed y Mwstwr Golf Club in Bridgend. In 2005 Peter Johnson purchased Ridgeway Golf Club and Driving Range and in his time of ownership has developed a junior academy and furthered the success of this small but successful club.Peter has been a personal coach to many Welsh

golfers including Ryder Cup star Philip Price, European Tour players Steve Dodd and Bradley Dredge and his own son Richard Johnson who is a five times winner on the US PGA Tour. In 2007 Richard won The PGA Tour Championship and was number one on the Nationwide tourDuring the past twenty years Peter has been coach to over 30 amateur internationals and was responsible for coaching 5 out of the 6 man team that won Wales’ first ever major event, the 1995 European team championships. For services to the PGA (of which Peter was chairman between the years of 1987 - 1990). he was awarded a Fellowship of the association in 2009.Like all career’s this one must come to an end and 2013 is the year that Peter Johnson retires. However I am sure the name Peter Johnson and his reputation as one of Wales biggest ambassadors to golf will long continue.

The Wales National is often regarded by many as one of Wales toughest (and longest) golf courses. A Whopping 7413 yards off the competition Tee’s, this monster will leave any golfer quaking in his or her boots. The layout of the course consists of some extremely tight holes, long approach shots and lots of water. The signature 16th hole (main photo) offers golfers a 446 yard par 4, with the added bonus of water coming into play on both tee shot and approach. To add to this, generally this hole plays into the wind and if the gusts pick up, many golfers will struggle to get home in two, making this in our opinion not just one of the toughest holes on the course, but also one of the toughest holes in Wales! The course was always designed with professional tournaments in mind and since opening the course has held stage to several pro tournaments including Challenge Tour and Ladies European Tour Events. So how enjoyable is playing a tough course for Joe public? Well that in our opinion could be one of the downfalls of the Vale. A great course to play if you are in the region of 12-14 handicap and down, but could be a demoralizing experience for the higher handicappers as the length could make scoring difficult to impossible for many. But lets be honest, do you really want a cham-pionship course that is easy? Certainly not in our opinion! With this in mind we feel that The Wales National has been perfectly placed to offer a tough test of championship Golf, and even if you struggle to score, I’m sure you will enjoy the layout and challenge experienced. If however you really find it tough going, don’t forget The Vale Resort offers another fantastic Golf Course, The Lakes Course, which is still a challenge but of a more suitable length for all ability of golfers. So do we recommend a visit to The Wales National? Definitely! Low handicap golfers will find it a challenge and you gain a sense of pride and accom-plishment if a good score is recorded. High handicappers can always win the ‘guess how many balls we lose’ sweepstakeswww.vale-hotel.com

Local Champions Honored Radyr Golf Club, Cardiff

Radyr Golf Club celebrates its champion golfers for 2012 and raises charity funds Radyr Golf Club held its annual presentation evening in late November. This gave the year’s successful golfers the chance to collect their hard won trophies in front of their fellow members. With around 100 members in attendance the event was highly successful and enjoyed by all present. The Vice Captains Norman Grainger and Michelle Griffiths were on hand to present cheques to their chosen charities for 2012; Guide Dogs for the Blind and Diabetes UK Cymru. The funds were raised throughout the year including a successful Charity Golf weekend held over the course at Radyr. Each of the charities benefited to the tune of £5,500. Guide Dogs for the Blind will be using the funds to help train a new guide dog, Sparky who was named by

junior golfers at Radyr. The presentations were many and various and saw all sections of the club represented including the Juniors, Seniors and ladies. Junior Champion Oliver Young won the Junior Strokeplay and Matchplay Championships during a notable 2012. A talented rugby player, Oliver won the South Wales Boys Strokeplay in April at Tredegar Park and went on to represent Glamorgan Junior Under 18s during the season. The Ladies Champion for 2012 is Gemma Powell. Gemma only joined the club in April from her first club in Bargoed. As a low single figure handicap player Gemma has played outstandingly throughout the summer and captured the Ladies Championship on finals day with a display of long straight hitting

and a fine short game. Gemma paid tribute to the warmth of the welcome that she has re-ceived at Radyr in her first year of membership and is looking forward to trying to defend her title in 2013. Men’s Champion Brent O’Neill has had a tremendous year. Along with his brother Chris he won the Victory Shield for Radyr for only the third time in the club’s history and has also represented Glamorgan County Golf who won the Welsh Intercounties in September 2012. Brent won both the strokeplay and matchplay competitions at Radyr in 2012 and has now won 5 championships in total which matches the achievement of the Club President, Jeff Toye. Brent defeated one of his keenest rivals at the club, Gwyn Jones in what was a repeat of the 2011 final. Brent was ahead after 18 of the 36 holes but Gywn fought back to make the match all square early in the second round. Brent however emerged victorious and is no doubt awaiting the many challengers to his crown in 2013.
