Introduction
CIMC identified the issue: energy in ore comminution
Intends to allocate funding to efforts to reduce energy requirements and
there is a need to determine where to focus the efforts
The appraisal study was defined and Hatch came onboard
For over 50 years Hatch have worked alongside clients to develop and

For over 50 years Hatch have worked alongside clients to develop and
implement innovations in the mining and metals industries
Hatch brings a wealth of skills to support the process of innovation on
projects: idea generation techniques; feasibility evaluation and testing
The global nature and diversity of Hatch's business allows cross-
regional and cross-business sector transfers of novel ideas

Objective
The overall objective of this long-term program is to reduce the energy required for comminution by greater than 50%
Assessment of the value of existing and emerging technologies to reduce
the energy required for industrial ore comminution
What are the engineering limitations of existing “more efficient” technologies?
What is the potential value of extending existing technologies into newer
00/2015
What is the potential value of extending existing technologies into newer
applications?
What are prospects of non-conventional approaches?
Are there notable alternative technologies “under the radar screen” that
should be considered?
The assessment will result in a report identifying the approaches and technologies to be considered in a multi-year development plan
(short-term, long-term, academic and/or industrial testing…)
5
Boundary Limits
This study is on the process technologies of comminution
 Out of scope:
methods which reduce the size of feed to the comminution plant
methods which reduce the volume of feed to the mill like pre-concentration
recovery of energy from process streams in the mill
00/2015
recovery of energy from process streams in the mill
Intelligent blasting, ore sorting, energy recovery are being studied by other CMIC groups
