InvitationCMIC18: Building Tomorrow’s AustraliaAustralia’s Infrastructure Boom will be one and a half times the size of the recent Australian Mining Boom. The Construction Materials Industry must be prepared for the challenge.

Australia is on the cusp of the biggest influx of public and private infrastructure investment in decades. By way of example, the Federal Government’s asset recycling program, combined with a clear focus on what constitutes good and bad debt, is delivering a pipeline of Australian transport infrastructure projects peaking at over $16B per annum by 2019. Similarly, the biggest change in the electricity generation network since the 1970’s is delivering huge investment in Wind, Solar and Storage infrastructure – everything from wind farms to Snowy 2.0.

The Construction Materials Industry will fuel the Infrastructure Boom, with Boral CEO Mike Kane, predicting 7 to 10 years of elevated activity. It is therefore crucial that our industry responds to the challenge of ‘Building Tomorrow’s Australia’ – responding to the needs of the constructors for ever greater volumes, ever more challenging technical specification, and innovations which will allow us as an industry to deliver in full on time.

And crucially in order to retain our community’s right to operate, it is essential that our industry must innovate and evolve in order to do so in a socially and environmentally sustainable way, meeting the growing expectations of the world at large.

The theme for CMIC18 of “Building Tomorrow’s Australia” reflects some of the key drivers that will allow the Construction Materials Industry to deliver.

Construction jobs have already grown strongly, up 64,400 in quarter 2 of 2017 alone – and for the first time in over 30 years this industry reflects just short of

1 in 10 jobs in the broader economy. As a result most states in Australia are experiencing a tight labour market, particularly in the areas we as an industry operate.

The Construction Materials Industry must diversify its workforce as the competition for labour resources builds. Diversity is an economic imperative as much as it is an ethical imperative. In parallel our industry must leverage off technology and its exponential growth as concepts such as ‘driverless trucks’ and ‘drones’ have already moved from science fiction to reality.

Once again the Institute of Quarrying Australia (IQA) and Cement Concrete & Aggregates Australia (CCAA) have joined forces to present CMIC18 as the pre-eminent Conference for the Construction Materials Industry. As the seventh Construction Materials Industry Conference, CMIC18 will continue to evolve to remain relevant whilst retaining much of what delegates know and love.

The Infrastructure Boom is already here. Building capability and driving innovation are essential for prosperity. CMIC18 offers an unparallelled opportunity every two years for the Construction Materials Industry to wrestle with these challenges. Can you afford to not have the most current contacts and thinking for you and your business?

The Organising Committee looks forward to welcoming you to CMIC18: Building Tomorrow’s Australia.
