What a blessed Lenten season we have enjoyed here at CMPC! And what a full Holy Week we are in! God is surely smiling down on us as we gather in this place frequently to worship, study, and fellowship. We continue to see new faces in our midst and have had the distinct pleasure of baptizing a number of God’s children in recent weeks and have more to come in the weeks ahead. God is good—all the time! As you read through this edition of the Herald be sure to open your heart and mind to where God is calling you to be involved and to serve. During the first two Sundays of Eastertide, the music continues to focus on the glorious celebration of Easter. For the first Sunday in April the anthem is “There Is a Redeemer,” based on a contemporary hymn by the late singer/pianist Keith Green (this arrangement is by Lloyd Larson.) The opening words, “there is a redeemer, Jesus, God’s own Son, Precious Lamb of God, Messiah, Holy One” bring back the words we have heard about our Savior throughout Lent and Easter.

On the second Sunday in April the Word in Music will be “Revive Us Again”, based on an old hymn by Scottish physician (later turned composer) William P. MacKay (d. 1885.) He wrote the music in 1863. It has the sound and feel of a revival song. The refrain says, “Hallelujah! Thine the glory. Hallelujah! Amen. Hallelujah! Thine the glory. Revive us again.” According to his testimony, MacKay’s mother gave him a bible when he was young. This was her last gift to him prior to her death. He was not interested in reading it, and sold it cheaply when he needed money. As a doctor he had a dying patient whose last thoughts were of a book that had been most precious to him. Dr. MacKay discovered that the man’s favorite book was, in fact, the very bible that had been given to him by his mother, the one he had sold for a mere pittance many years before. His name was in it, written there by his mom. That day, he said, is when he became a Christian.

On confirmation Sunday, April 21st, the anthem is “10,000 Reasons” by Matt Redman and Jonas Myrin. This song was sung by everyone on LOGOS Sunday, and is

GRACE NOTES: News from the Music Ministryone of the songs that Scott has used for closing on Wednesday evenings. I heard the congregation sing “bless the Lord, O my soul O my soul, Worship His holy name. Sing like never before, O my soul; I’ll worship Your holy name.”

The Bells of Joy will play “I Will Sing of My Redeemer” on the same Sunday. The tune is Hyfrydol, which is used in our hymnal three times: for “Come, Thou Long Expected Jesus, Alleluia!,” “Sing to Jesus!,” and “Love Divine All Loves Excelling”. The text for the piece the bells are ringing is decidedly for Eastertide. In part, they say: “I will sing of my Redeemer, and His wondrous love to me; on the cruel cross He suffered, from the curse to set me free . . . . . On the cross He sealed my pardon, paid the debt, and made me free.”

The last Sunday of April brings a classic G. F. Handel piece, “Holy Art Thou.”

We are enjoying our beautiful new piano! Thanks to all of you for your kind words and for being excited with us. The touch is so wonderfully sensitive. We are happily adjusting to the intricacies of this beautiful instrument!

There is still time to come and sing with the Trinity Choir before the summer recess. We meet Thursday evenings at 7:30 p.m. in the sanctuary. The bell choir would also like to have new members. Their rehearsal is on Tuesday evenings. You will be blessed by the music of both groups and we will be blessed by you!

Spring is here and our teachers are eager to share exciting spring projects and lessons with our preschoolers. During the latter days of February we welcomed parents into our classrooms where they shared their jobs and culture with us. We are thankful for the time that they spent with us and hope they enjoyed themselves as much as we enjoyed their visits.

As March blew in we introduced a new curriculum theme, “God and my World.” The children started by learning about all the planets in our universe. We then concentrated on our world, and learned that the Earth is made up of air, water, and rocks. The teachers devised many fun experiments, activities, and art projects revolving around air, water, and rocks. They also talked about the dinosaurs. This lesson is always popular with the children! As Easter approached we introduced the customs and symbols of Easter through crafts and activities and highlighted Christ’s resurrection as the reason for the happiness and joy of the season.

This past month has been filled with many joys and blessings at the Preschool. We have registered many new and returning families for the upcoming 2012/2013 school year. The preschool’s most effective marketing tool is a personal recommendation from current and past preschool families and from our church families. Registration for the 2013/14 school year is ongoing. Please let your family and friends know about us. Our classes and tuition rates are as follows:

2-day class ~ ($130) this class is on Tuesdays and Thursdays (9 a.m. to noon), and is for children who turn three before September 30th. 3-day class ~ ($190) this Monday, Wednesday, and Friday class (9 a.m. to noon), is for children who turn four before September 30th. 5-day class ~ ($300) this class meets everyday (9 a.m. to noon), and is for children who will attend Kindergarten the following school year.

All children must be potty-trained before school begins.

News from Christian Education

Opportunities on SundayCome and join us each Sunday at 9:15 a.m. in Fellowship Hall! We start the morning with an opening activity led by Pastor Hoffman. At 9:30 a.m. we have a Sunday School class for everyone – preschool through adult.

Jim Wade is teaching a four-week adult class on “science and God” which promises to provide lots of opportunities for discussion. Each class stands alone – you don’t have to attend all classes in the series. Come to as many of the classes as possible.

For the children, we have a class for our preschoolers, a class for grades kindergarten through grade two, and a class for grades three through five. Middle schoolers meet as one class, as do our high school students. Sunday School ends promptly at 10:15 a.m. in time for everyone to attend the 10:30 a.m. worship service.

Sunday School does NOT replace the Sunday Experience – this program continues to offer children an alternative to our worship service. Sunday Experience is designed for children in kindergarten through grade three. During Sunday Experience children learn age appropriate worship skills that mirror what the adults are doing in worship.

Confirmation SundayPlease mark your calendar for April 21st. On that Sunday members of the confirmation class will be received into the membership of the church during the 10:30 a.m. worship service. You will have a chance to greet these young people at the reception following worship.

LOGOS MusicalIf you attended worship on Sunday, March 17th, you most certainly enjoyed the LOGOS musical! The musical this year celebrated 25 years of LOGOS with a look back at musicals from our past. Congratulations and thanks to Allison Miller for her creative leadership and guidance, to Brianna Ashman who assisted her, and to the many others who made the musical a reality. Let’s not forget our children who enthusiastically proclaimed the Word with their voices.

Vacation Bible SchoolOur VBS program is in the planning stage – mark your calendar for June 24–28th. Watch for details about how you can register your children!! Ashlee Hoffman is looking for lots of volunteers to help staff this wonderful event. Please sign up so we can bring a full week of VBS to our children.

Recently Pastor Hoffman asked the Membership and Hospitality Committee to work with him on reviewing the church’s list of active members. Since he has only been with us for 18 months, he is curious about the members he has not yet seen.

I thought, “Finally there is an advantage to being a senior citizen and a member of the church for 26 years.”

He gave me a list of people he was wondering about, and right away I noticed a friend of mine was on his list. For years she rang in the bell choir right next to me. She and her family moved to the southern region of Maryland several years ago, too far away to continue attending our church. And she is not alone.

Do I Have to Go to the Gym to be an “Active Member”?by Rachel Wade, Co-chair, Membership and Hospitality Committee

Many of the people on our list of active members have moved away, simply stopped attending, or may have even passed away. In fact, I recently looked through the 2011 Photo Directory to see how many of our “active members” live more than two hours away. There were nineteen people in this category. How strange it is that our church now has “active” members in North Carolina, South Carolina, Pennsylvania, Florida, and Massachu-setts!

In conversation with Pastor Scott I discovered that it is not unusual for presbyterian churches to have outdated member lists. When the new senior pastor arrived at the previous church where he had been an associate pas-tor, 500 people had to be removed from the list of active members!

If we are really being honest with ourselves, we have to recognize that even members who remain in our locality may find another church that they prefer. If we can’t win them back, we must still do the right thing and update our membership roll. Having an accurate accounting of our active members affects many aspects of our life together.

The Membership and Hospitality Committee has already collected much data on member activity, which will eventually be presented to the session along with recommendations for action. If you have pertinent information about a member of the church who we have not seen in quite a while, please feel free to share that information with me. I am particularly grateful to Annette Hinkle, Anna May Lebro, Liz Perraud, Miriam Miller, Patricia Wilder, Clarence Wingate, and Joy Exner, as well as the various members of the session and the diaconate for their efforts in this process so far.

Men’s BreakfastThe next Men’s Breakfast will be held on Saturday, April 6th at 9 a.m. in Fellowship Hall. All men of the church ages 18 or older are welcome to attend. Friends are welcome as well.

New Book Talk Group!A book talk group has formed at CMPC. We are currently reading “Jim and Casper Go to Church” by Jim Henderson. CPR/AED TrainingCPR and AED (Automatic External Defibrillator) training will be held on Sunday, April 14th after worship from 12 to 1 p.m. This will be a non-certification, hands only training led by a Howard County Fire and Rescue CPR Program Specialist. We need to have at least 20 people sign up. To sign up please contact Andrea Raid at [email protected]. There will also be a sign up board outside of the sanctuary.

AnnouncementsNew Adult Class!Join Pastor Scott Sunday evenings in April for a thought-provoking, exciting class for adults. “Animate: Faith” is a new video-based series that will challenge all participants to think more critically about their faith. Leading pastors and theologians in the reformed tradition offer insight and questions that will encourage and challenge our understanding of God and the world. Classes will begin at 7 p.m. and end at 8 p.m. Childcare will be available. Please call or email the church office (410-997-8011 or [email protected]) to sign up for the class. A nominal fee of $15 per participant is requested to offset the cost of materials—which includes a journal for each participant.

“Young Adult” GatheringAll young adults (college grads through 40-ish) are invited to join in a night of fun here at the church on Friday, April 19th. We will begin at 6 p.m. with a potluck dinner in Fellowship Hall and will follow with a night of games (of the board variety and perhaps others). Childcare will be provided for the games portion of the evening. RSVP to the church office if you plan to attend and feel free to invite friends! We will be back in touch with those who have RSVP’d to arrange the meal.

VBS Fun ShopOn Saturday, April 13th, CMPC will be hosting a regional training event for Group Publishing’s 2013 Vacation Bible School, “Kingdom Rock!” We are so excited to have been chosen to host this event! Group’s VBS FunShop events offer hands-on training that gives practical pointers on every area of the VBS curriculum. Group’s veteran VBS instructors will instruct those from churches far and near on everything from time-saving decorating tips to how to bring the bible lesson to life to give each and every child a vital encounter with Christ! Please keep CMPC and our team of volunteers in your prayers as we prepare for this wonderful opportunity!

Vacation Bible SchoolVacation Bible School 2013 is just around the corner! Kingdom Rock VBS will be one of the best weeks of your child’s summer! Our program is open to all children age three (must be completely potty-trained) to those entering fifth grade! There will be interactive games, cool science experiments, awesome music, snacks fit for a king, and bible lessons that will give your child a vital encounter with Christ! What a great way to spend a week of the summer! Join us June 24-28th from 9 a.m. - noon. The cost is $25 per child and $50 max per family. Registration starts now! Volunteers Needed for Vacation Bible SchoolWant to be a part of the fun and help make VBS a HUGE success? We want you to join us in this incredible outreach to our Columbia community and beyond! Our goal is to bring Vacation Bible School to 100 kiddos this year....which means we need MANY hands to pitch in and help! Won’t you consider being a part of this wonderful ministry? Youth Mission Day in MayThe Big Day of Serving: All middle schoolers and high schoolers are invited to join us on Saturday, May 4th for a work day in Manassas, Virginia. Teens from all over will gather to serve and transform local neighborhoods in need. More information will be available soon.

Mars Hill Mission TripMark your calendars now and plan to join your church family for our all-church mission trip to Mars Hill, North Carolina on July 14-21, 2013. More details will follow in the weeks ahead, but set aside the time now so you won’t miss out on the experience. Feel free to ask those who went last year to tell you all about this wonderful opportunity to put your faith into action and serve those in need. Please join us. The more, the merrier!

Musical Treats and SweetsCMPC’s annual Musical Treats and Sweets will be held on Sunday, June 9th at 7:00 pm in Fellowship Hall. This year’s theme is “Water.” Please join us for this musically and tastefully rich evening that raises funds for our high schoolers and adult leaders to attend the GenOn Youth Summit (previously known as the LOGOS Youth Conference) in Scranton, PA in July. Come and experience a variety of musical gifts offered by members of our church family and participate in our silent auction of special sweet treats and other items. There will be a suggested donation of $5 at the door. We are seeking musical performers, auction bakers, dinner donors (also for the auction), and snack providers. Mark your calendar now!

Dance Night at CMPCPut on your dancing shoes! CMPC is hosting a Cinco de Mayo-themed dance in Fellowship Hall on May 4th from 7-10 p.m.

Local dance teacher Chuck Alexander will be providing music along with dance instruction in multiple styles. We will be learning Swing, Salsa, Merengue, Cha-cha, and others throughout the evening. Music requests will be taken!

The dance is open to all CMPC members and friends, high school and above. Tickets will be $12, and we will be taking donations to offset the cost of the church’s new piano.

If you can’t attend the dance but would still like to join in the fun, the Fellowship Committee is looking for volunteers to help with decorations and refreshments. Please contact us at if you would like to help in any way at [email protected].

AnnouncementsHurricane Sandy MissionWhen Hurricane Sandy hit the East Coast this past fall, it became the second costliest hurricane in U.S. history, damaging or destroying many shore communities in the mid-Atlantic region. As we approach the six-month mark, there is still much to be done to help many of the low income residents of the area whose homes and livelihoods were devastated by the storm.

You have the opportunity to personally help our East Coast neighbors in Atlantic City, New Jersey this spring.

CMPC is working to send a team to participate in the “The Millard Fuller Legacy Build” in Atlantic City, N.J. from Sunday, April 28th to Friday, May 3rd. You can participate for all or part of the week. Volunteers are needed to help repair and rebuild more than 20 homes, most of which suffered major flood damage. There is a registration fee to cover meals and administration (based on the number of days you participate), and discounted hotel lodging is being coordinated for our group. This particular build is for participants ages 18 and older only.

The “Legacy Build” is named in memory of Millard Fuller, founder of Habitat for Humanity and The Fuller Center for Housing. This is an annual, internationally-recognized time of building that brings attention to the need for simple, decent and affordable housing.

“Hi! My Name is...”The third Sunday of every month is “Name Tag Sunday!” Have you always wondered what the name of the person sitting down the pew from you was, but you were too afraid to ask? Now you won’t have to! Greeters will have name tags available. All are encouraged to participate.

“metamorphomai,” translated as “transfiguration” in Mt 17: 2 and Mk 9: 2, and 2 Corinthians 3: 18.

From this we can infer that there are also differences between our earthly bodies and our heavenly bodies so glorious as to be difficult to describe. 1 Corinthians 15: 39, regarding these differences, discusses different kinds of flesh and different kinds of glory. So, our resurrection body is created to fit into the Kingdom of God in heaven, not as we were on earth, and will probably be significantly different, but that is only a conjecture. In reality, we don’t know very much about what it will be like; whether or not we will have a physical body. The references telling us God is making us into the image of His Son are referring to spiritual growth.

A butterfly is used as a symbol of eternal life because the caterpillar symbolizes the earthly life, then it builds a cocoon around itself and is apparently dead, or asleep until its period of growth and change is complete. Then, it bursts forth as a beautiful butterfly, free from the limitations it had as a caterpillar. Remember Jesus spoke of death as “a sleep” (John 11: 11).

Look forward to this passage from the earthly to the heavenly with the peace of God in your heart. “For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I shall know just as I also am known.” (1 Corinthians 13: 12 NKJV)

“Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his likeness with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit. “ (2 Corinthians 3: 17-18 NIV)(Jesus)“…who, by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowlybodies so that they will be like his glorious body.” (Philippians 3: 21 NIV)

We can look forward to a glorious life with Christ.

“Our Celestial Body or Resurrection Body ”By Leta Renich

Some of us wonder what we will be like after the resurrection. Some non-Christians believe there will be no resurrection. In 1 Corinthians 15: 35-50, it is clear that there will be a resurrection. In this passage Paul points out differences we are familiar with of earthly bodies – different flesh of different animals, but all with many similarities. We can see how different a plant is from a seed (1 Corinthians 15: 37), and how different a butterfly is from the caterpillar. Jesus used the analogy of a grain of wheat (John 12: 24) when he was foretelling his crucifixion and resurrection just before his last Passover.

Either His resurrection body was different enough that he was not easily recognized (Matthew 28: 17; Mark 16: 12-13; Luke 24: 13-32, 41; John 21: 4) or they were so startled that they did not immediately recognize him. Apparently it was similar enough, that they did know him (Matthew 28: 9-10; Luke 24: 13, 31; John 20: 14).

He was able to eat (Luke 24: 30, 41-43). In all of these occasions he was able to talk with them. As a matter of fact, that was how Mary recognized him, by his calling her name (John 20:16). Did Jesus deliberately choose a body similar to his earthly body so He would be recognized? Will He appear to us after our resurrection in the same way, or will He be different?

How do we know that we shall be like Him? There are many references telling us that God is creating us into the image of His Son: Romans 8: 29; 1 Corinthians 15: 48-49. [1 Corinthians 13: 12; 2 Corinthians 3: 17-18; and Philippians 3: 21 are quoted at the end.]

Words have been inadequate in describing the transfiguration glory of Jesus (Mt 17: 2; Mk 9: 2), or even some of the visions of heaven.

Again, words are inadequate in describing heaven and our change into a heavenly body. The Greek wordusually translated “transformed” or “changed” is
