WELCOME TO CMSF 2013

With a Federal election on the horizon and a raft of new reforms set to be implemented in the coming months, this year’s Conference of Major Superannuation Funds could not come at a more critical time for the industry.

As AIST’s new CEO, it will be a particularly important, informative and exciting conference for me.

All of us who work in superannuation – as well as many of those who work in related financial services – are dealing with a myriad of new requirements, obligations and business challenges.

From 1 July this year, the industry enters a brave new world of MySuper. This date also heralds a new era of fund disclosure, increased data collection, commencement of SuperStream, investment challenges and the financial advice reforms.

To ensure you are in the best position to meet these encroaching deadlines and successfully launch new products into what is set to be a very competitive marketplace, CMSF’s program provides the latest updates from the regulators, policy analysts and other industry experts.

Governance is also high on CMSF’s agenda – in terms of the governance model of the trustee board, the numerous governance hurdles which super funds face when investing offshore and satisfying increased trustee obligations.

CMSF will also tackle the big-picture issues: High-profile speakers from Australia and abroad will challenge your thinking on world economics, post-retirement, the sustainability of the super system and more.

As always, CMSF will be offering the latest technology to help you engage with the conference. Delegates will be able to customise their own program via our mobile conference website and, this year, audience voting can be done via your own mobile phone. The twitter conversation continues to be a growing part of the CMSF experience and we encourage you to get involved.

And finally to complete the conference, Sir Bob Geldof will take to the stage for the closing plenary on Friday with his inspirational views on leadership, business, world politics and social justice.

This is only my third CMSF while, for some of you, it’s your 23rd conference. Your participation at the conference and your feedback is invaluable to AIST. I look forward to hearing your views and ideas over the next three days.

Yours sincerely,

Tom Garcia CEO

AIST is pleased to once again coordinate the Super Grads program commencing in February 2014. We are looking for expressions of interest from our members to employ the next generation of industry leaders.

Around 100 grads have completed the program since its inception in 2004 with over 80% still working in the industry today. AIST will recruit grads from a variety of disciplines to complement your existing team.

This unique twelve-month program gives graduates the opportunity to learn and develop as a group as well

as within the fund or organisation that engages them. The program includes a number of residential training programs, attendance at CMSF 2014, completion of RG 146, assorted soft-skills training and much more. Recruitment for the program will commence in April 2013 with a view to finalising graduate appointments by September 2013.

We aim to develop people who are genuinely committed to making a difference to the quality of retirement for working people and their families.

AIST & IFS LEGALHelping to build exceptional super fund boardsIn today's complex business environment, it is crucial that superannuation fund boards perform at optimum levels to deliver the best possible outcomes for their members.

The recently amended trustee director covenants and APRA's finalised Prudential Standards set new benchmarks for board performance.

Reviewing the capabilities of your board and individual directors is key to understanding your fund's capacity to tackle the challenges of the future and the associated risks.

Independent board performance reviews are now a prudential requirement, at least every three years. AIST and IFS Legal offer a proven Independent Board Performance Review service to assist superannuation boards. These reviews assist boards to understand the 'people factor' in board deliberations and ensure that collegiality leads to accountable and sustainable outcomes for members while underscoring governance credibility.

roUnD TAble 1 – Caught in the middle?

Activist groups are increasingly viewing super funds as stakeholders in their own campaigns, with members themselves often involved. Does this represent a new threat for funds? Or could it be an opportunity? Should funds welcome this challenge? Or should they be shoring up their defences? Could it be turned to their advantage? And what about the Sole Purpose Test?

In this interactive session, we will have the opportunity to hear from a well-known governance professional about their experiences dealing with NGOs, before workshopping ideas for rules of engagement going forward.

Parallel STreaM 3 – Thursday 21 March, 2:00pm – 3:00pm InVeSTMenT – Investing in 2013: themes, opportunities and risk in a post-crisis world

In a post GFC world where profits have to be competed for and debt is scarce, are we in a new paradigm? A new ‘normal’?

Join us in this session where Global CIO of Mercer Investments, Andrew Kirton, argues that hoarding cash, and buying the ‘least risk asset’ won’t produce returns, that developments are less likely to be driven by macro-consideration and our focus needs to be on business and investment fundamentals if investors are to earn the order of returns expected of them by their beneficiaries.

And turning to risk, the realignment of developed economies to a post-Lehman world of deleveraging, fiscal austerity and lower trend growth (the new normal) calls for a re-examination of mean reversion assumptions in the global markets. Philip Lawlor, Managing Director of FTSE Research & Analytics, will discuss how a change in the macro paradigm requires a more holistic appraisal of risk. In particular, the drivers behind elevated market volatility and whether this will be a persistent investment headwind.

Speakers:Andrew Kirton – Global CIO Investments, Mercer (UK)Philip Lawlor – Managing Director, Research & Analytics, FTSE Group (UK)

Chair:Kerrie Howard – Institutional Client Director, Schroders

location:M1 & M2, Mezzanine Level

GoV/leAD – lifting the lid on portfolio holdings

Under new legislation, members of Australian super funds will soon have access to full details of their super funds’ portfolio holdings. What are the issues associated with providing members with the option to obtain this information? How will funds present these details?

Benjie Fraser, an international pension governance expert will provide insights into the portfolio disclosure practices of overseas funds. Hilary Spear, a communications expert from an Australian super fund will talk about the utility of this information for members and the disclosure solutions funds might consider.

Speakers:Benjie Fraser – Global Pensions Executive, J.P. Morgan Investor Services (UK)Hilary Spear – Head of Investor Education – Investment, AustralianSuper

Chair:Paul Murphy – Manager - Institutional Investments, ACSI

location:P1 & P2, Plaza Level

enGAGeMenT – The silver haired tsunami

One of the most pressing issues for fund engagement will be the tsunami of members moving into post-retirement.

Does your fund have the engagement model to deal with this pending influx of members?

This session will explore attitudes to super and retirement, and the strategies employed by Australia’s leading insurer for the over 50’s market.

Speakers: Michael O’Neil – Chief Executive Officer, National Seniors AssociationNatasha Fenech – Executive General Manager – Customer, Product & Pricing, Personal Insurance Suncorp (APIA)

Chair:John Farrington, FAIST – Executive Officer - Clients & Relationships, Equip

location:M4, Mezzanine Level

oPS/ADMIn/InSUr – MySuper: what’s been done & what’s left to do?

By now funds are well down the path to MySuper. Applications have been drafted, there has been much debate and discussion, and policies and procedures have been written. Despite all this work, there is still more to be done.

This is an opportunity to quantify what’s left and to determine what hasn’t been fully addressed. Take this opportunity to review the growing checklist of required implementation. Many elements of MySuper are interrelated and it’s important to consider the impact to members.

Speaker: David Haynes, FAIST – Project Director, AIST

Chair:Mel Birks – Stakeholder Relations & Communications Manager (Policy & Legislation), Superpartners

location:M3, Mezzanine Level

roUnD TAble 1 – The fundamental impact that mergers will have on insurance

Stronger Super is set to be a catalyst for funds to review where they fit in the current superannuation landscape and it is expected that this will instigate greater levels of merger activity. Does greater scale always lead to a reduction in insurance premiums when two Funds merge? Or do mergers actually create greater complexities and therefore higher risks when aligning benefit designs? Framed from a technical perspective, hear all of the key aspects for your fund to consider.

Speakers:Peter Smith – Head of Distribution, MetLifeEleanor Ottaviano – Head of Group Insurance, AIA AustraliaJulie Lander – Chief Executive Officer, CareSuper Australia

Chair:Tim Ironside – Training Consultant, AIST

location:P3 & P4, Plaza Level

roUnD TAble 2 – The age of retirement: policies, consequences and options (session capped at 40)

This paper examines the main drivers of current policy changes and their consequences, and assesses the merit of alternative policy options with regard to retirement age, namely:

— How might the age-pension eligibility age differ in response to individual characteristics such as: length of workforce participation; occupational characteristics which are correlated with effective working life and expected life span; and gender?

— What should be the relationship between pension eligibility age, age of access to private retirement savings (preservation age), and drawdown arrangements and constraints?

We have and are attracting some amazing talent into the industry, but are we getting the most out of these people? How can we ensure that great ideas find their way to the Board and into members’ pockets?

By attending this session you will:

— Identify some key areas where your Fund may be inadvertently stifling innovation;

— Understand tangible steps you can take to ensure the best ideas (and some crazy ones) make it to the Board, rather than getting shut down before you even hear about them;

— Hear what investment staff want from us; and

— Learn of the large and small things you need to do right now, to ensure that your Fund is positioned to invest in ways that will ensure its relevance into the future.

GoV/leAD – Disclosure and transparency: remuneration, diversity, risk and other challenges

The superannuation industry is heading into a new age of disclosure and this session will explore some of the major issues. Amanda Harkness will discuss how Australia’s listed companies have faced these challenges and how companies and shareholders have reacted. David Atkin will discuss Cbus’ decision to be an early adopter of the new disclosure requirements and talk through their process for improved transparency.

enGAGeMenT – Mobile is taking over, whether you like it or not!

You’ve seen the statistics, mobile devices are everywhere.

In 2012, there were 835 million smartphone users. Global internet usage will more than double by 2015 (most of these users will be mobile) and 64% of mobile phone time is spent on apps.

So how is your fund taking advantage of the mobile revolution?

This interactive fire-side chat session will cover the digital and mobile landscape, what is happening in the world of apps and how to create something your members will use. Understand the digital advertising space and how you can leverage Facebook and Google advertising to spread your message cost effectively.

There will be practical tips for small and large funds, and some simple things you can take back to your fund and implement tomorrow.

You will be encouraged to throw in your personal fund challenges for our panel to address, so bring your mobile phone and get involved!

Panellists:Callum Tod – Digital Marketing Manager, HESTAJosh Cairns – Managing Director, Vortilla Digital

Chair:Richard Body – Head of Technology & Administration Solutions, Towers Watson

location:M4, Mezzanine Level

oPS/ADMIn/InSUr – What is driving premium rates in the group risk insurance market?

In the Group Risk insurance market, premiums have on average been decreasing for a number of years on the back of fierce competition from insurers. This reduction in pricing however may be approaching an end, therefore potentially setting superannuation funds up for a shock when they next review or tender their insurances. It’s important for funds to consider the key factors driving pricing and gain an understanding of the importance of data management in the negotiation process. Whilst an increase in claims costs and rising prices are a major area of concern, Group Insurance presents an opportunity to funds for significant differentiation.

Investments in infrastructure require an understanding from various parties perspectives. Varying government’s views and the related political landscape all affect the ability of fund managers to operate in the space globally. Finally the funds themselves have a desired outcome that may also impact any decision by them to invest.

By attending this session you will; discover how the political landscape impacts the investor, gain insights into past investor experiences, and understand how fund managers identify and assess global opportunities.

Our panel will explore both the Governance and Audit standards and look at the requirements around audit committees, external auditors and the internal audit function. enGAGeMenT – exploring emotion in member engagement

Your members are impacted by their non-conscious emotions when making brand and purchase decisions every day. Their choice to join Fund A over Fund B, their decision to stay or defect is informed by emotions. Yet emotions act below conscious awareness so traditional research is flawed in revealing these vital choice drivers. So how do Marketers learn what hierarchy of discrete emotions drive choice in their category? Is the brand activating the right emotions? Are my competitors activating those emotions more effectively? Are my communications helping or hindering? Are emotions or rational drivers more important?

Forethought Research will explore the role of emotion in consumer choice show casing research studies from Australia and the US. Providing Superannuation marketers and strategists with insights for action.

Several prominent Australians have recently expressed the view that the equity holding of Australian superannuation funds is too high. It is high relative to many other countries, when the $1.4 trillion superannuation industry is looked at in isolation. The concern is that the concentration of market risk may not be in the best interests of members. This is an important issue for trustees who have an obligation to consider the level of investment risk appropriate for their members. This session will explore the issues surrounding equity holdings of Australian superannuation funds providing delegates with interesting factors to consider.

How is the industry going to convert 850,000 employers into changing their ways? Employers are generally reluctant clientele and this workshop will explore the effects of disintermediation.

With the implementation of gateways, eCommerce and web security concerns, the way funds communicate and deal between each other will also change. Big dollars are being spent on IT and operations whilst funds are being squeezed by auto consolidation. Will technology cause employers to forget the relationship the fund has worked so hard for?

MySUPer: WHAT’S been Done & WHAT’S lefT To Do?

By now funds are well down the path to MySuper. Applications have been drafted, there has been much debate and discussion, and policies and procedures have been written. Despite all this work, there is still more to be done.

This is an opportunity to quantify what’s left and to determine what hasn’t been fully addressed. Take this opportunity to review the growing checklist of required implementation. Many elements of MySuper are interrelated and it’s important to consider the impact to members.

CAUGHT In THe MIDDle?

Activist groups are increasingly viewing super funds as stakeholders in their own campaigns, with members themselves often involved. Does this represent a new threat for funds? Or could it be an opportunity? Should funds welcome this challenge? Or should they be shoring up their defences? Could it be turned to their advantage? And what about the Sole Purpose Test?

In this interactive session, we will have the opportunity to hear from a well-known governance professional about their experiences dealing with NGOs, before workshopping ideas for rules of engagement going forward.

Stronger Super is set to be a catalyst for funds to review where they fit in the current superannuation landscape and it is expected that this will instigate greater levels of merger activity.

At IFM, we have something else that’s just as important: a set of founding principles that guide everything we do.

As an investment management company created by Industry Super Funds, we know that every extra dollar we earn is an extra dollar that goes towards the retirement savings of hard working individuals.

That’s a great motivator. In fact, it’s our only motivator. It’s why we do everything we can to provide a greater net return to fund members. And why we only work with investors that have the same principles.

Importantly, having a single-minded focus doesn’t mean we think narrowly. Quite the opposite. We manage over $39 billion across four asset classes and operate in three of the world’s four biggest pension markets, with a global team of investment experts.

The Trustee Director Learning Pathway (TDLP) consists of three programs to support the elevation of your skills and confidence over the course of your career as a superannuation trustee director.

` Level one – Build your foundations as a new/aspiring trustee director. This program covers the core areas of superannuation governance for all trustee directors new to the industry and has a particular focus on the trustee director’s legislative duties and obligations. This program is also suitable if you are a fund executive or experienced trustee director who wants to refresh your skills in a particular area (such as analysing financial statements).

Available: August 2013

` Level Two – Build your excellence as an experienced trustee director. This high level program focuses on improving your skills in decision-making and leading board discussions in key areas. Facilitated by strategic specialists such as Melbourne Business School, you will develop greater confidence in challenging the debate on critical decisions that contribute towards the fund’s success.

Available: Late 2013

` Level Three – Take the lead as a committee member or chair. It’s widely acknowledged that leadership by the Chair and board committees has a crucial role in the governance of superannuation funds. If you are the Chair of the board, a committee Chair or a committee member, this program will support you to develop your expertise to create an effective working culture with respectful, robust discussion.

Available: Mid 2014

We’d like to keep you updated on the progress of this exciting initiative, so if the TDLP is of interest to you or your fund register your interest by visiting www.aist.asn.au.
