2018 National Show Report

The 2018 Canadian National Milking Shorthorn Show was held on Friday, September 21st at the Lindsay Exhibition in Lindsay, Ontario. While number of animals exhibited was down slightly this year from previous years, the quality of the show was still quite strong. The judge for this year’s show was Bobby Jarrell of RJ Farms in Corbyville, Ontario, a noted Jersey and Holstein breeder and official judge for both breeds.

Taking Junior Champion honours from the heifer classes was Richford Anecdote Marmalade, the first place Interme-diate Calf. This stylish, red daughter of Koopycrest Anecdote-P is bred and owned by Don and Karen Richardson and family of St. Mary’s, Ontario. The Richardsons also took home the Reserve Junior Championship with Richford Conrad Snapchat, the first place Senior Yearling. Honourable Mention Junior Champion was Prinsville Bolero Ima Star, bred and owned by the Prinzen family of Prinsville Dairy Farms, Bloomfield, Ontario.

This year’s Grand Champion went to first time exhibitors Camflat Holsteins (John and Laura Campsall) of Woodville, Ontario with their first place Mature Cow and Best Udder of Show, Camflat Inforcer Mary EX-92. Mary is a currently milk-ing in third lactation, projected for over 9800 kg milk. She is sired by Quality Inforcer, a herd sire by Plato out of Quality Ina (previously HM Grand Champion at the 2008 National Show) and she is out of an Oceanbrae dam previously pur-chased at a CMSS National Sale. What better way to debut at the National Show!

Reserve Grand Champion went to Lynmark Otis Siesta EX-90, the first place Four Year Old bred and owned by Lyn-mark Farms of Norwood, ON. Siesta is sired by homebred sire Lynmark KAO Otis and was previously the Reserve Junior Champion as a calf in 2014. 2018 National Sale Report

The prevailing market conditions in the Canadian dairy industry played a large factor in having a somewhat disap-pointing National Sale this year. A number of producers expressed interest in the sale this year, but many were already overstocked due to low cattle prices, combined with the effect of low milk prices in the last year. However, we did have some consignments selling to newer breeders, which is always desired outcome of our National Sale. Sincere thanks to all of the consignors who consigned some very high quality animals this year. A number of these animals are still avail-able for sale for anyone interested.

High selling lot: $3050 for Oceanbrae TP Miranda. Purchased by Fieldcrest Farms, Addison, ON

Additional animals selling:

Changes to CMSS Fee Schedule

Milking Shorthorn breeders should note that the Board of Directors have made two small changes to the fee schedule for registry services, effective January 1st, 2019:

1. The member rate for registrations up to 3 months of age will be raised from $15.00 per animal to $16.00 per ani-mal. The $1.00 per animal discount for registrations received online or by ERA remain. The non-member rate also increases by $1.00 to $31.00 per animal.

2. The rate for registrations of animals 50% purity or less will be raised from $12.00 per animal to $16.00 per animal. For animals 50% purity or less there is no overage fee, and the rate is the same for members and non-members.

For a full listing of registry fees, please see our website at www.milkingshorthorn.ca/services

Syndicate Sire: Oceanbrae Foster

The next CMSS Syndicates sire, Oceanbrae Foster, will be syndicated in the very near future, as soon as we have confirmation that he has made sufficient doses.

The share price is $225, and includes 15 doses of semen upon release of the bull by Semex. If breeders have accu-mulated royalties from previous shares, this can reduce the cost of the share purchase.

Foster is the first son of Treeton Pingerly (#1 LPI) to be available in North America. His dam is Oceanbrae Logic Feather EX-92, the #19 LPI cow with high fat and protein production and a high performing cow family. Foster is the #1 PA LPI young sire in Canada at +2103.

To reserve your share, please contact Ryan. Semen release for Foster is scheduled for later this fall.

Notes from the Secretary-Manager:

1. There are currently some Milking Shorthorns available for sale on our website at www.milkingshorthorn.ca/ genetics/. If you’re interested in adding Milking Shorthorns to your herd this fall, be sure to visit the site and contact the breeders with cattle available.

2. As we get to the end of the year, a reminder to get caught up on registrations and transfers. For any breeders significantly behind on their registrations who would like to explore a once-in-a-lifetime moratorium on late fees to get caught up, please contact me for more details. Note: CMSS memberships renew annually on the day that they were applied for, so you can become a member at any time and get full value for your membership! First-time members are eligible for a discounted rate for their first year of membership...apply today!

3. The office has heard that there have been some Milking Shorthorns imported from the United States to Quebec and are now in the herds of a number of first-time Milking Shorthorn breeders. This is exciting news for growth of the breed in Quebec, and I will be working with these producers to ensure that registrations and transfers are com-pleted.

4. Included on the next page is a brochure for the International Red Dairy Breeds Federation tour in Australia in March 2019. For anyone interested in this tour, please feel free to contact me for more information and the full registration brochure.

In addition, the World Shorthorn Congress is planning meetings and a tour in Australia in September/October 2019. Some Dairy Shorthorn herds are on the agenda, and there would likely be an opportunity to meet up with some Illawarra herds as well. Please let me know if interested in more information.
