Tutorial 8 (Semester 2 2014/15)

1. When shopping for a product (eg computer, household appliance, food) how much

importance do you pay to product stewardship? If this is of high importance, giveexamples of your responsible buying choices. If this is of low importance, give

reasons and suggestions how to encourage greater participation of users in product

stewardship.

2. Suppose you work for Company X which manufactures photocopiers, and you

have been assigned a DfE (Design for Environment) project to minimize the

environmental impacts of the companys products. List down your proposed ideas

and explain your reasons and assumptions.

3. Suppose you want to conduct a life cycle analysis to compare the amount of CO2

generated as a result of using a hot air dryer versus disposable paper towels for

drying hands in the toilet. Explain the steps for carrying out this exercise for the

dryer and give the assumptions needed. The assumptions should be as realistic as

possible.

4. (a) NUS Office of Environmental Sustainability has been advocating the use of

disposable cornware utensils over plastic ones:

(b) Read the article Environmental impacts of conventional plastic and bio-based
