A company's research and development department plays an integral role in the life cycle of a product.

While the department usually is separate from sales, production and other divisions, the functions of these

areas are related and often require collaboration. A thorough understanding of the functions of the research

and development department allows you to maximize those duties at your small business, even if you don't

have a big department.

N E W P R O D U C T R E S E A R C H

Before a new product is developed, a research and development department conducts a thorough study to support the

project. The research phase includes determining product specifications, production costs and a production time line.

The research also is likely to include an evaluation of the need for the product before the design begins to ensure it is a

functional product that customers want to use.

N E W P R O D U C T D E V E L O P M E N T

The research paves the way for the development phase. This is the time when the new product is actually developed

based on the requirements and ideas created during the research phase. The developed product must meet the product

guidelines and any regulatory specifications.

E X I S T I N G P R O D U C T U P D A T E S

Existing products of the company also fall under the scope of research and development. The department regularly

evaluates the products offered by the company to ensure they are still functional. Potential changes or upgrades are

considered. In some cases, the research and development department is asked to resolve a problem with an existing

product that malfunctions or to find a new solution if the manufacturing process must change.

Q U A L I T Y C H E C K S

In many companies, the research and development team handles the quality checks on products created by the com-

pany. The department has an intimate knowledge of the requirements and specifications of a particular project. This

allows team members to ensure the products meet those standards so the company puts out quality products. If the

company also has a quality assurance team, it may collaborate with research and development on quality checks.

I N N O V A T I O N

The research and development team aids the company in staying competitive with others in the industry. The depart-

ment is able to research and analyze the products other businesses are creating, as well as the new trends within the

industry. This research aids the department in developing and updating the products created by the company. The team

helps direct the future of the company based on the information it provides and products it creates.

Why Is Strategic Management Needed?

Most business owners want to make wise decisions, but they sometimes are at a loss of where to begin.

This is where strategic management comes into play. An important concept for business owners and man-

agers to grasp, strategic management entails evaluating business goals, objectives and plans in light of

your company focus on effectiveness and efficiency.

C O R P O R A T E G O V E R N A N C E

An effective organization is often one that has initiated programs and services within its structure that en-

sure open communication, good management and effective leadership. Without these hallmarks of corpo-

rate governance, it is difficult to manage strategically because the basic framework of goal-setting and deci-

sion-making are missing. Setting up a control and reporting mechanism is also important to strategic man-

agement as part of a wider corporate governance push. This allows the organization to make changes

when they are needed to constantly monitor its own progress.

C O R E C O M P E T E N C I E S

Strategic management can help your business to identify and capitalize on its core competencies -- things

within your business that you do best. As Edward Russell-Walling notes in his book "50 Management Ideas

You Really Need to Know," a core competency has three key factors: it is not easy for competitors to dupli-

cate, your business can use it in a number of different products or services and it provides a benefit to your

customers. For some companies, a core competency is the brand name: People buy the products simply

because they carry the organization's name, which is associated with quality and prestige. For others, the

core competency might be the cost of production. Whatever your core competencies are, Russell-Walling is

quick to note that most companies only have a few. If you think your business has strengths in multiple ar-

eas, it's important to get at the root of what causes these successes.

S E T T I N G G O A L S

Strategic management is vitally important even on the small scale within a business. However, strategic

management is difficult to accomplish without a clearly defined set of goals for the business' operation.

Knowing what your core competencies are is good from the standpoint of understanding your strengths in

the marketplace, but this also helps you to identify areas for improvement and set goals and objectives

based on those weaknesses. If you know, for instance, that your business is lagging behind in utilizing the

power of the Internet to sell its products, one of your goals can be to introduce an online trading platform

within the next six months. Importantly, the goals your business sets should be measurable, specific and

have a time frame attached to them. Setting goals in this way helps you to strategically position your busi-

ness for future success.
