Bryan Ulysses Estrella Manabat was born in Bataan, Philippines on July 28, 1973. He is married to Serrina Piteg Manabat, and they have 8 beautiful children— Riannalyn, Maria, Sebastien, Brandon, Isabel, Keziah, Alejandra, and Ronald James. Mr. Manabat has made Saipan his home for 22 years. He is a full-time dad, part time: Motheread/Fatheread Facilitator/Trainer. He has been volunteering for the CNMI Motheread/Fatheread Program for 8 years. In 2013, he was chosen as the Governor’s Humanities Awardee for Out-standing Humanities Teacher Outside the Classroom category. It was during this time that he successfully spearheaded coordination efforts for the San Isidro Community Youth Center Project, which provided mentor-ship and local skills/crafts development to at risk/low income youth in partnership with the Division of Youth Services. He was honored for his commitment for the Council’s signature Motheread program. “I love work-

ing with parents and children. Working with parents from diverse back-grounds, and varied educational attainment gave me a common perspec-tive that we all want what is best for our own children regardless of our life standing. Disciplining is one repeating topic that creates healthy discus-sion in a Motheread/Fatheread training session, as an example, but the end goal is the same, children’s well-being is a common aim, regardless of the path one undertakes. I like working with children by reading aloud to them or engaging them in many learning activities be it either storybook

reading or games. When students get the message of the story, or the concept and or idea that you want them to learn, you know you got them hooked in reading more books. That makes me feel accomplished when children wanted more stories to read after a Motheread story sharing session, you could feel the joy and excitement that they feel, if they are happy, it makes me happy, too. I personally believe that once children’s enthusiasm in reading has been ignited that desire for learning through reading will be burning for a lifetime.” Furthermore, he said, “Motheread/Fatheread pro-gram’s approach in literacy engagement is not the usual how to read activities, but rather a holistic approach on the why’s of reading, and the importance of reading. An adult participant, no matter the educational attainment will feel empowered to be involved in their children’s literacy development due to the non-

intimidating group supported Motheread adult training ses-sions. Motheread/Fatheread classes work on the strong points of each individual participant and channels that new found con-fidence in helping their own child develop literacy skills from home.” Besides the regular Motheread parent trainings that he has led, he is also a Teacheread trainer/presenter. The Teacheread Program is a locally developed Motheread program designed to provide aspiring teachers from the Northern Marianas Col-lege and center-based teachers and caregivers from the DCCA’s Child Care Program with the skills necessary to build children’s reading and critical thinking skills. Mr. Bryan E. Man-abat currently serves as the Program Facilitator of the CNMI Motheread/Fatheread Family Literacy Program. In his spare time, he can be found trying to complete his own set of The Great Books of the Western World. “I know it’s kinda old school, but I like reading western classical minds in paper copy. Lol. Does this count as a hobby? I like auto mechanic do it your-self mini projects, too!” Since, August 2015, he has been actively volunteering with numerous local outreach agencies United for Saipan(U4S) and Community Outreach Recovery Effort (C.O.R.E.). On behalf of the CNMI Motheread/Fatheread Program, we thank you and we appreciate all the hard work and commitment you do for the CNMI. We are truly blessed to have you be a part of our Motheread/Fatheread family. Cheers!

“I truly believe in our Motheread/Fatheread logo: ‘Literacy Changes Lives-Motheread Changes Literacy.’ I think knowing what to do in times of crisis is the true strength of literacy; because engaging in literacy allows you to gain knowledge that betters one’s life. When a person learns, he achieves, he then makes substantial changes in his life by making right decisions for himself, and his family. In a practical manner; a better reader sees advantageous op-portunities faster, learn things quicker, and makes informed choices healthier.” — Bryan Manabat
