The Northern Marianas Humanities Council cordially invited the public to a special presen-tation by a visiting molecular anthropologist that will be held at 6pm in the Magalahi Room, Grandviro Resort on Saturday, Jan. 23.

In his talk titled “Researching the Origins and Genetic Distinctiveness of Chamorros: A Bi-Parental Analysis,” Dr. Miguel Vilar will explain how he uses DNA to learn about ancient patterns of settlement and migration in Micronesia, as well as inferring the impact of historic events, settle-ment and resettlement patterns, and demographic changes in the Marianas islands.

In his earlier work, Dr. Vilar presented research based strictly on the maternal lineage, showing that Chamorros were genetically distinct to other Oceanic and Southeast Asian populations, and were only distantly related to these groups.

In this new work he explains how patterns in the paternal lineages (Y chromo-some DNA) show similar results, while patterns in the rest of the genome add a historical dimension to ancestry, influenced by centuries of Spanish colonization and the more recent impact of American and Filipino influence on the islands.

Dr Vilar, a molecular anthropologist and science writer, currently serves as the Project Manager for National Geographic’s Genographic Project. His fieldwork has taken him to places throughout the Pacific region, East Africa, Mesoameri-ca, and the Caribbean.

In the laboratory, Dr. Vilar researches the modern genetic diversity of human populations from Micronesia, Melanesia, Central and South America, and the Caribbean.

In addition to publishing articles in scientific journals and popular magazines, Dr. Vilar also writes the Genographic Project Blog for National Geographic Society website.

This presentation, free of charge and open to the public, is a part of the council’s ongoing Community Lecture Series which strives to offer information on a wide variety of topics of interest to the local community.

Using children’s literature as its basis, the Motheread/

Fatheread curriculum teaches essential literacy skills uti-

lizing real-life family contexts and adult roles. For a major-

ity of adult students, the role of parent is highly motivat-

ing. Therefore, the training helps educators learn how to

teach literacy skills that are essential both in the home and

in the workplace. Institute participants receive a Teacher’s

Guide that includes not only lessons designed for adults

that can be used in their classroom, but supplements that

parents can use in the home with their children, ages birth

through elementary-school For classes where adult literacy gains are measured, CASAS Competen-

cies have also been linked to each lesson. Participants completing Institute requirements will be

awarded 2.0 CEUs from North Carolina State University.

Training Topics

1. Teaching approaches and learning styles: individual assignments, small group work, lec-

ture, and discussion

2. Parents’ Role in Children’s Literacy Development: emergent literacy activities, reading

aloud, building vocabularies and concepts

3. Use of story: thematic analysis

4. Adult classes: use of parent education and literacy development curriculum, instructional

techniques, lesson planning, preparation, and presentations

5. Evaluation: authentic assessment, student goals, measuring student outcomes, using

standardized measures

6. Program implementation: start-up, recruitment and retention, program development, and

integration of curriculum into existing program structures and requirements

Training Fee $675 per person. Interested Agencies willing to sponsor individuals to the Motheread Institute, please

contact Program Coordinator Viola Deleon Guerrero at 235-7319.

Beth Demapan is the Assistant Coordinator of the CNMI Motheread/Fatheread Family Literacy Program, and has been with the Program since 2010. She has served with Motheread first as a volunteer Certified Parent Trainer in 2010 and then in 2013 was recruited to be a full-time Assistant Coordinator. From the very beginning of her employment with the Motheread® Program, Beth demonstrated a passion and love for literacy. Beth holds a Bachelors in Arts in Classics with a concentration in Ancient Greek and Roman Literature and languages from the prestigious Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. With this love and passion for providing literacy to diverse/socio-economically underserved populations of the CNMI, she very cheerfully and enthusiastically motivates all around her to enjoy and appreciate our Pro-

gram, and what we do for the community. She constantly sees ways of improving and moving forward our Program. The Motheread/Fatheread® Family Literacy Program serves the whole CNMI as the Northern Marianas Humanities Council’s signa-ture literacy outreach program. We serve over 800 families every year, providing 6,400 hours of literacy to the CNMI. We oversee, assist, and supervise 33 volunteer Parent Trainers and Story Exploring Instructors, who are teachers, day care providers, private busi-ness owners, administrators in their full-time jobs. Beth is instrumental in that she ensures that our Trainers and Instructors are re-minded of their schedules, have participants attend their classes, substitute as a Trainer when they are unable to attend, advertise, and market our Program. She is a Team Player and is an essential part of our office Team of 3 individuals, which we share space at the Joeten-Kiyu Public Library (CNMI State Library). She writes, photographs, records, designs, edits, and publishes our monthly newsletter online and emails it to our partners. She has upgraded and redesigned our newsletter from 4 pages to 8 pages. This invalu-able piece of information also serves as a monthly reporting of our Program events to the Northern Marianas Humanities Council. And that’s not all, as of January 2016, she has currently completed the publishing of the Joeten-Kiyu Public Library’s newsletter, defunct for 5 years. She researched and interviewed all the JKPL staff and services since November 2015. It encompasses a 20-page quarterly

newsletter documenting and highlighting the programs, services, and staff of the CNMI State Library. Because of her can-do attitude and love for the library, the Joeten-Kiyu Public Library’s Acting Executive Director Erlinda Naputi personally asked her to spearhead reviving the Friends of the Library. She has created fliers, facebook page, gmail account, led meetings, and is now on a general fundraising membership drive to actively recruit more friends. During our Parent Trainers and Story Exploring Instructors meetings, Beth Demapan is in charge of our statistics portion, and other statistical portion for submittal to our partners and the Northern Marianas Humanities Council. She documents on Excel every registration and evaluation form that we give out to our participants for our Program. She inputs and records all this immense data using Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet, pivot tables and graphs charting our progress, status, and future goals. She inventories our Motheread/Fatheread® library which holds 1862 books and 116 titles (Adult and Children’s curricu-lum), and personally contacts those outstanding book holders to retrieve the titles. She assists our Team in reordering, cataloging, and maintaining our Motheread® library. On a personal level, Beth Demapan takes her love for literacy and shares it with her family. Growing up on Saipan, family is very close-knit. She enlists the help of her mother Rita Barcinas Demapan, an educator herself, her partner Gilbert Birnbrich, and her daughter Alexandra Birnbrich to participate and as-sist with our Motheread Program. She is fully supported by her work-family (Motheread Team) and her nuclear family in all that she does. Thank you Beth Demapan for all the hard work and commitment you do for the Motheread Program. We are blessed to have you on our team!

Motheread®, Inc. is a nationally acclaimed private, non-profit organization that combines the teaching of literacy skills with child development and family empowerment issues. Parents and children learn to use the power of language to discover more about them-selves their families, and their communities.

Motheread® offers classes for both the adults and children. In adult classes, participants learn to be story readers, writers, and tellers in a group structure that supports their own sense of worth and ability. These classes are appropriate for all adults, regardless of reading ability or prior educational experience. By teaching the “why” of reading rather than just emphasizing the “how”, clas-ses encourage parents to be reading role models for their chil-dren. For children, Story Exploring provides a structured envi-ronment for learning reading, critical-thinking, and problem
